Propellant-powered actuator for gas generators

Hydrazine operated monopropellant generators are used for spacecraft rocket engines and propellant pressurization systems. Measured work output of monopropellant actuators compares favorably with output of squib-type actuators.

Thrust and pumping characteristics of cylindrical ejectors using afterburning turbojet gas generator

Static tests of cylindrical ejectors having ejector to primary diameter ratios from 1.1 to 1.6 and ejector length to primary nozzle diameter ratios from 0.9 to 2.1 are reported. Power setting of the J85-13 turbojet engine was varied from part power to maximum afterburning. Corrected secondary weight flow ratio was varied from 0.02 to 0.08 over a range of exhaust nozzle pressure ratios from 2.0 to 9.0. Secondary flow temperature rise and pressure drop characteristics through the nacelle secondary flow passage were also obtained.

Gas generators produce hydrogen-rich fuel

Resulting fuel, which is produced from gasoline and water, can be burned by gasoline engines with significantly reduced pollution and improved fuel economy.

Hydrogen-rich gas generator

A process and apparatus are described for producing hydrogen-rich product gases. A spray of liquid hydrocarbon is mixed with a stream of air in a startup procedure and the mixture is ignited for partial oxidation. The stream of air is then heated by the resulting combustion to reach a temperature such that a signal is produced. The signal triggers a two way valve which directs liquid hydrocarbon from a spraying mechanism to a vaporizing mechanism with which a vaporized hydrocarbon is formed. The vaporized hydrocarbon is subsequently mixed with the heated air in the combustion chamber where partial oxidation takes place and hydrogen-rich product gases are produced.

Potential benefits of a ceramic thermal barrier coating on large power generation gas turbine

Thermal barrier coating design option offers benefit in terms of reduced electricity costs when used in utility gas turbines. Options considered include: increased firing temperature, increased component life, reduced cooling air requirements, and increased corrosion resistance (resulting in increased tolerance for dirty fuels). Performance and cost data were obtained. Simple, recuperated and combined cycle applications were considered, and distillate and residual fuels were assumed. The results indicate that thermal barrier coatings could produce large electricity cost savings if these coatings permit turbine operation with residual fuels at distillate-rated firing temperatures. The results also show that increased turbine inlet temperature can result in substantial savings in fuel and capital costs.

Optimization of the geometric dimensions of vertical electrolyzers with gas-generating electrodes

A study is made to determine whether, under the conditions of electrolyte circulation induced by evolved gases, it is possible to increase the vertical scale without a great increase in cell voltage. The mathematical modeling used is discussed, and a comparison is made with experimental results and conclusions. It is found that it is possible to increase the vertical scale without producing a cell voltage increase.

Effect of an impact-generated gas cloud on the acceleration of solid ejecta

A hypothesis that vaporization of a large amount of volatiles such as H2O and CO2 in the Martian surface by the impact of a large object could have accelerated solid ejecta to earth is examined. A hydrodynamic model is used to approximate a hemispherical gas cloud expanding into an atmosphere and entraining solid ejecta. Account is taken of the target material, the impactor materials, mass vaporized, impact velocity, drag coefficient, and crater sizes. A Martian crater larger than 30 km diam is found to be a necessary remnant of any impact that could have produced the shergottites, nakhlites and Chassigny meteorites which have been found on earth and possess similarities to analyzed Martian rocks.

Axial flow positive displacement worm gas generator

An axial flow positive displacement engine has an inlet axially spaced apart and upstream from an outlet. Inner and outer bodies have offset inner and outer axes extend from the inlet to the outlet through first, second, and third sections of a core assembly in serial downstream flow relationship. At least one of the bodies is rotatable about its axis. The inner and outer bodies have intermeshed inner and outer helical blades wound about the inner and outer axes respectively. The inner and outer helical blades extend radially outwardly and inwardly respectively. The helical blades have first, second, and third twist slopes in the first, second, and third sections respectively. The first twist slopes are less than the second twist slopes and the third twist slopes are less than the second twist slopes. A combustor section extends axially downstream through at least a portion of the second section.
