Transverse momentum broadening of a jet in quark-gluon plasma: an open quantum system EFT

We utilize the technology of open quantum systems in conjunction with the recently developed effective field theory for forward scattering to address the question of massless jet propagation through a weakly-coupled quark-gluon plasma in thermal equilibrium. We discuss various possible hierarchies of scales that may appear in this problem, by comparing thermal scales of the plasma with relevant scales in the effective field theory. Starting from the Lindblad equation, we derive and solve a master equation for the trans- verse momentum distribution of a massless quark jet, at leading orders both in the strong coupling and in the power counting of the effective field theory. Markovian approximation is justified in the weak coupling limit. Using the solution to the master equation, we study the transverse momentum broadening of a jet as a function of the plasma temperature and the time of propagation. We discuss the physical origin of infrared sensitivity that arises in the solution and a way to handle it in the effective field theory formulation. We suspect that the final measurement constraint can only cut-off leading infrared singularities and the solution to the Markovian master equation resums a logarithmic series. This work is a stepping stone towards understanding jet quenching and jet substructure observables on both light and heavy quark jets as probes of the quark-gluon plasma.

Improved opacity expansion at NNLO for medium induced gluon radiation

When an energetic parton propagates in a hot and dense QCD medium it loses energy by elastic scatterings or by medium-induced gluon radiation. The gluon radiation spectrum is suppressed at high frequency due to the LPM effect and encompasses two regimes that are known analytically: at high frequencies ω<!-- ω --> > ω<!-- ω --> c = q ^<!-- ^ --> L 2 , where q ^<!-- ^ --> is the jet quenching transport coefficient and L the length of the medium, the spectrum is dominated by a single hard scattering, whereas the regime ω < ωc is dominated by multiple low momentum transfers. In this paper, we extend a recent approach (dubbed the Improved Opacity Expansion (IOE)), which allows an analytic (and systematic) treatment beyond the multiple soft scattering approximation, matching this result with the single hard emission spectrum. We calculate in particular the NNLO correction analytically and numerically and show that it is strongly suppressed compared to the NLO indicating a fast convergence of the IOE scheme and thus, we conclude that it is sufficient to truncate the series at NLO. We also propose a prescription to compare the GW and the HTL potentials and relate their parameters for future phenomenological works.

Loop-level gluon OPEs in celestial holography

We compute one-loop corrections to the OPE of gluons in the celestial conformal field theory corresponding to Yang-Mills coupled to arbitrary matter. We exploit universal hard/soft factorization to derive an IR finite OPE for the hard gluon operators. This OPE involves logarithms and operators that resemble logarithmic partners of primary operators. We derive an exact all-loop OPE in a limit of the Higgs-regulated planar $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 super Yang-Mills theory.

Gluon parton distribution of the pion from lattice QCD

We present the first determination of the x-dependent pion gluon distribution from lattice QCD using the pseudo-PDF approach. We use lattice ensembles with 2+1+1 flavors of highly improved staggered quarks (HISQ), generated by MILC Collaboration, at two lattice spacings a ≈ 0.12 and 0.15 fm and three pion masses M π ≈ 220, 310 and 690 MeV. We use clover fermions for the valence action and momentum smearing to achieve pion boost momentum up to 2.29 GeV. We find that the dependence of the pion gluon parton distribution on lattice spacing and pion mass is mild. We compare our results from the lightest pion mass ensemble with the determination by JAM and xFitter global fits.

Temperature measurement of Quark-Gluon plasma at different stages

In a Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP), the fundamental building blocks of matter, quarks and gluons, are under extreme conditions of temperature and density. A QGP could exist in the early stages of the Universe, and in various objects and events in the cosmos. The thermodynamic and hydrodynamic properties of the QGP are described by Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) and can be studied in heavy-ion collisions. Despite being a key thermodynamic parameter, the QGP temperature is still poorly known. Thermal lepton pairs (e + e − and μ + μ − ) are ideal penetrating probes of the true temperature of the emitting source, since their invariant-mass spectra suffer neither from strong final-state interactions nor from blue-shift effects due to rapid expansion. Here we measure the QGP temperature using thermal e+e− production at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The average temperature from the low-mass region (in-medium ρ 0 vector-meson dominant) is (2.01 ± 0.23) × 10 12 K, consistent with the chemical freeze-out temperature from statistical models and the phase transition temperature from Lattice QCD. The average temperature from the intermediate mass region (above the ρ0 mass, QGP dominant) is significantly higher at (3.25 ± 0.60) × 10 12 K. This work provides essential experimental thermodynamic measurements to map out the QCD phase diagram and understand the properties of matter under extreme conditions.

Extracting the speed of sound in quark–gluon plasma with ultrarelativistic lead–lead collisions at the LHC

Abstract Ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions create a strongly interacting state of hot and dense quark–gluon matter that exhibits a remarkable collective flow behavior with minimal viscous dissipation. To gain deeper insights into its intrinsic nature and fundamental degrees of freedom, we determine the speed of sound in an extended volume of quark–gluon plasma using lead–lead (PbPb) collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 5.02 TeV. The data were recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 0.607 nb −1 . The measurement is performed by studying the multiplicity dependence of the average transverse momentum of charged particles emitted in head-on PbPb collisions. Our findings reveal that the speed of sound in this matter is nearly half the speed of light, with a squared value of 0.241 ± 0.002 ( stat ) ± 0.016 ( syst ) in natural units. The effective medium temperature, estimated using the mean transverse momentum, is 219 ± 8 ( syst ) MeV . The measured squared speed of sound at this temperature aligns precisely with predictions from lattice quantum chromodynamic (QCD) calculations. This result provides a stringent constraint on the equation of state of the created medium and direct evidence for a deconfined QCD phase being attained in relativistic nuclear collisions.

Gluon helicity from global analysis of experimental data and lattice QCD Ioffe time distributions

We perform a new global analysis of spin-dependent parton distribution functions with the inclusion of Ioffe time pseudodistributions computed in lattice QCD (LQCD), which are directly sensitive to the gluon helicity distribution, Δ g . These lattice data have an analogous relationship to parton distributions as do experimental cross sections, and can be readily included in global analyses. We focus in particular on the constraining capability of current LQCD data on the sign of Δ g at intermediate parton momentum fractions x , which was recently brought into question by analysis of data in the absence of parton positivity constraints. We find that present LQCD data cannot discriminate between positive and negative Δ g solutions, although significant changes in the solutions for both the gluon and quark sectors are observed. Probing the Short-Distance Structure of the Quark-Gluon Plasma with Energy Correlators

Energy-energy correlators (EECs) are promising observables to study the dynamics of jet evolution in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) through its imprint on angular scales in the energy flux of final-state particles. We carry out the first complete calculation of EECs using realistic simulations of high-energy heavy-ion collisions and dissect the different dynamics underlying the final distribution through analyses of jet propagation in a uniform medium. The EECs of γ -jets in heavy-ion collisions are found to be enhanced by the medium response from elastic scatterings instead of induced gluon radiation at large angles. In the meantime, EECs are suppressed at small angles due to energy loss and transverse momentum broadening of jet shower partons. These modifications are further shown to be sensitive to the angular scale of the in-medium interaction, as characterized by the Debye screening mass. Experimental verification and measurement of such modifications will shed light on this scale and the short-distance structure of the QGP in heavy-ion collisions. New Data-Driven Constraints on the Sign of Gluon Polarization in the Proton

Recently, the possible existence of negative gluon helicity Δ g has been observed to be compatible with existing empirical constraints, including from jet production in polarized proton-proton collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, and lattice QCD data on polarized gluon Ioffe time distributions. We perform a new global analysis of polarized parton distributions in the proton with new constraints from the high- x region of deep-inelastic scattering (DIS). A dramatic reduction in the quality of the fit for the negative Δ g replicas compared to those with positive Δ g suggests that the negative Δ g solution cannot simultaneously account for high- x polarized DIS data along with lattice and polarized jet data. Probing Gluon Fluctuations in Nuclei with the First Energy-Dependent Measurement of Incoherent 𝐽/𝜓 Photoproduction in Ultraperipheral PbPb Collisions

Incoherent 𝐽/𝜓 photoproduction in heavy ion ultraperipheral collisions (UPCs) provides a sensitive probe of localized, fluctuating gluonic structures within heavy nuclei. This Letter reports the first measurement of the photon-nucleon center-of-mass energy (𝑊 𝛾⁢N ) dependence of this process in PbPb UPCs at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV, using 1.52 nb −1 of data recorded by the CMS experiment. The measurement covers a wide 𝑊 𝛾⁢N range of ≈40–400 GeV, probing gluons carrying a fraction 𝑥 of nucleon momentum down to an unexplored regime of 6.5 ×10 −5 . Compared to baseline predictions neglecting nuclear effects, the measured cross sections exhibit significantly greater suppression at lower 𝑥. Additionally, the ratio of incoherent to coherent photoproduction is found to be constant across the probed 𝑊 𝛾⁢N and 𝑥 range, disfavoring the establishment of the black disk limit. This Letter provides critical insights into the 𝑥-dependent evolution of fluctuating gluonic structures within nuclei and calls for further advancements in theoretical models incorporating nuclear shadowing and gluon saturation.

QLBT: a linear Boltzmann transport model for heavy quarks in a quark-gluon plasma of quasi-particles

Abstract We develop a new heavy quark transport model, QLBT, to simulate the dynamical propagation of heavy quarks inside the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Our QLBT model is based on the linear Boltzmann transport (LBT) model with the ideal QGP replaced by a collection of quasi-particles to account for the non-perturbative interactions among quarks and gluons of the hot QGP. The thermal masses of quasi-particles are fitted to the equation of state from lattice QCD simulations using the Bayesian statistical analysis method. Combining QLBT with our advanced hybrid fragmentation-coalescence hadronization approach, we calculate the nuclear modification factor $$R_\mathrm {AA}$$ R AA and the elliptic flow $$v_2$$ v 2 of D mesons at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider. By comparing our QLBT calculation to the experimental data on the D meson $$R_\mathrm {AA}$$ R AA and $$v_2$$ v 2 , we extract the heavy quark transport parameter $$\hat{q}$$ q ^ and diffusion coefficient $$D_\mathrm {s}$$ D s in the temperature range of $$1-4~T_\mathrm {c}$$ 1 - 4 T c , and compare them with the lattice QCD results and other phenomenological studies.

Measurements of differential cross sections of Higgs boson production through gluon fusion in the $H\rightarrow WW^{*}\rightarrow e\nu \mu \nu$ final state at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

Higgs boson production via gluon–gluon fusion is measured in the $H\rightarrow WW^{*}\rightarrow e\nu \mu \nu$ decay channel. The dataset utilized corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 collected by the ATLAS detector from $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV proton–proton collisions delivered by the Large Hadron Collider between 2015 and 2018. Differential cross sections are measured in a fiducial phase space restricted to the production of at most one additional jet. The results are consistent with Standard Model expectations, derived using different Monte Carlo generators.

Gluon radiation from a classical point particle: recoil effects

Abstract The gluon radiation spectrum of a classical particle struck by a sheet of colored glass, is a key ingredient in understanding the distribution of energy and baryon density in the fragmentation region, particularly in the initial stages of heavy ion collisions. However, the currently known classical spectrum has a troublesome high-momentum tail (Kajantie et al. in Phys. Rev. D 100(5):054011, 2019; Phys Rev D 101(5):054012, 2020). By comparing tree-level bremsstrahlung of a spin-less quark to the above-mentioned known result, we propose an interpolating formula that takes into account the recoil of the struck particle, and therefore produces the correct perturbative behaviour at high momentum of the radiated gluon.

Probing gluon saturation via diffractive jets in ultra-peripheral nucleus-nucleus collisions

Abstract We argue that semi-inclusive photo-production of a pair of hard jets via coherent diffraction in nucleus-nucleus ultra-peripheral collisions at high energy is a golden channel to study gluon saturation. The dominant contribution is the diffractive production of three jets in an asymmetric configuration. Two of the jets are hard and propagate at nearly central pseudo-rapidities. The third jet is semi-hard, with transverse momentum comparable to the nuclear saturation momentum, and is well separated in pseudo-rapidity from the hard dijets. The emission of the semi-hard jet allows for strong scattering, thus avoiding the “higher-twist” suppression of the exclusive dijet production due to colour transparency. We compute the trijet cross-section using the diffractive TMD factorisation which emerges from the CGC effective theory at high energy. The cross-section is controlled by gluon saturation, which leaves its imprints on the structure of the final state, notably on the rapidity distribution.

A novel formulation of the unintegrated gluon distribution for DIS

In this talk, we revisit inclusive DIS in the small x limit and derive a new factorization formula that accounts for leading powers in both Bjorken and Regge limits. In this semi-classical description, we obtain a new unintegrated gluon distribution which encompasses both the dipole operator and the gluon Parton Distribution Function with an explicit dependence on the longitudinal momentum fraction x.

Constraining the nuclear gluon PDF with inclusive hadron production data

The nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs) of gluons are known to be difficult to determine with fits of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) and Drell-Yan (DY) data alone. Therefore, the nCTEQ15 analysis of nuclear PDFs added inclusive neutral pion production data from RHIC to help in constraining the gluon. In this analysis, we present a new global analysis of nuclear PDFs based on a much larger set of single inclusive light hadron data from RHIC and the LHC. Using our new nCTEQ code (nCTEQ++) with an optimized version of INCNLO we study systematically the limitations of the theory and the impact of the fragmentation function uncertainty.

Long-Range Azimuthal Correlation, Entanglement, and Bell Inequality Violation by Spinning Gluons at the Large Hadron Collider

We apply the recently developed concept of the nucleon energy–energy correlator (NEEC) for the gluon sector to investigate the long-range azimuthal angular correlations in proton–proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. The spinning gluon in these collisions will introduce substantial nonzero cos(2Φ) asymmetries in both Higgs boson and top quark pair productions, where Φ is the azimuthal angle between the forward and backward energy correlators in the NEEC observables. The genesis of the cos(2Φ) correlation lies in the intricate quantum entanglement. Owing to the substantial cos(2Φ) effect, the NEEC observable in Higgs boson and $t\bar{t}$ production emerges as a pivotal avenue for delving into quantum entanglement and scrutinizing the Bell inequality at high-energy colliders.

Probing the Gluon Orbital Angular Momentum at the EIC

In these proceedings, we calculate double-spin asymmetry (DSA) in exclusive dijet production in ep collisions and we demonstrate for the first time that the cos(Φ) angular correlation between the scattered electron and proton is a simultaneous probe of the gluon orbital angular momentum and its interplay with the gluon helicity. We make a rough estimate of the DSA for the kinematics of the Electron–Ion Collider.
