Conical-scan tracking with the 64-m-diameter antenna at goldstone

The theory and experimental work which demonstrated the feasibility of conical-scan tracking with a 64 m diameter paraboloid antenna is documented. The purpose of this scheme is to actively track spacecraft and radio sources continuously with an accuracy superior to that obtained by manual correction of the computer driven pointing. The conical-scan implementation gives increased tracking accuracy with X-band spacecraft signals, as demonstrated in the Mariner Venus/Mercury 1973 mission. Also, the high accuracy and ease of measurement with conical-scan tracking allow evaluation of systematic and random antenna tracking errors.

Geotechnical investigation report for proposed array of six 40-meter diameter antennas, Pioneer site, DSS 11, Goldstone, California tracking complex

The geotechnical investigation was conducted in three disciplines: (1) geological field reconnaissance of the general area of proposed construction; (2) geophysical seismic refraction survey of the localized area surrounding the six proposed antenna sites, including shear wave velocity determination; and (3) detailed foundation engineering investigation of each of the six sites. The investigations indicate that the six sites selected are relatively free from geologic hazards which would inhibit the proposed construction or future antenna operations.

Wind speed statistics for Goldstone, California, anemometer sites

An exploratory wind survey at an antenna complex was summarized statistically for application to future windmill designs. Data were collected at six locations from a total of 10 anemometers. Statistics include means, standard deviations, cubes, pattern factors, correlation coefficients, and exponents for power law profile of wind speed. Curves presented include: mean monthly wind speeds, moving averages, and diurnal variation patterns. It is concluded that three of the locations have sufficiently strong winds to justify consideration for windmill sites.

Goldstone R/D High Speed Data Acquisition System

A digital data acquisition system that meets the requirements of several users (initially the planetary radar program) is planned for general use at Deep Space Station 14 (DSS 14). The system, now partially complete, is controlled by VAX 11/780 computer that is programmed in high level languages. A DEC Data Controller is included for moderate-speed data acquisition, low speed data display, and for a digital interface to special user-provided devices. The high-speed data acquisition is performed in devices that are being designed and built at JPL. Analog IF signals are converted to a digitized 50 MHz real signal. This signal is filtered and mixed digitally to baseband after which its phase code (a PN sequence in the case of planetary radar) is removed. It may then be accumulated (or averaged) and fed into the VAX through an FPS 5210 array processor. Further data processing before entering the VAX is thus possible (computation and accumulation of the power spectra, for example). The system is to be located in the research and development pedestal at DSS 14 for easy access by researchers in radio astronomy as well as telemetry processing and antenna arraying.

HVAC modifications and computerized energy analysis for the Operations Support Building at the Mars Deep Space Station at Goldstone

The key heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) modifications implemented at the Mars Deep Space Station's Operation Support Building at Jet Propulsion Laboratories (JPL) in order to reduce energy consumption and decrease operating costs are described. An energy analysis comparison between the computer simulated model for the building and the actual meter data was presented. The measurement performance data showed that the cumulative energy savings was about 21% for the period 1979 to 1981. The deviation from simulated data to measurement performance data was only about 3%.

Objectives and first results of the NASA SETI Sky Survey field tests at Goldstone, California

The objectives and preliminary results of the initial field tests of the prototype hardware and software for the NASA SETI program are reviewed with emphasis on the Sky Survey component of the NASA search strategy. In particular, attention is given to field test instrumentation, sky pixelation, sky survey field tests, baseline tests, antenna control tests, and radio frequency interference survey. The test results and observational experience will be used to finalize the design of the SETI Sky Survey processing system and to optimize the observational strategy and procedures in time to begin a full-scale Microwave Observing Program in 1990.

Goldstone solar system radar performance analysis

A simulator was developed which models the digital baseband data paths of the planetary radar receiver system as configured in the ranging mode. The simulator is useful for qualifying the effects of digital quantization errors on radar receiver sensitivity and for predicting receiver performance. A performance analysis of the radar receiver is presented using system parameters that correspond to those for the upcoming Mars observations. Thus, the results provide an assessment of anticipated data quality for those observations.

Goldstone intracomplex connected element interferometry

Interferometric observations of the radio source pair 3C 84 and OE 400 were made on the 21 km baseline between Deep Space Station (DSS) 13 and DSS 15 to explore the angular navigation potential of intracomplex connected element interferometry (CEI). The differential phase-delay observable formed from pairs of 3 minute scans exhibited a precision of 1 psec, while the actual scatter of the phase-delay residuals for eleven scans over the 90 minute observing session was about 10 psec, consistent with the expected few millimeter fluctuations in the wet tropospheric path delay. Fitting for the position of OE 400 relative to 3C 84 yielded an error ellipse with a semi-minor axis of 60 nrad. Given the short data arc in this experiment, the orthogonal direction in the plane of the sky is not well determined; however, a second baseline or a data arc spanning a larger fraction of the source mutual visibility window could provide simultaneous determination of both right ascension and declination. Examination of the phase-delay residuals supports the accuracy of the cycle ambiguity resolution. However, reliable phase ambiguity resolution will pose the most significant challenge to routine use of CEI for spacecraft tracking, particularly when the a priori spacecraft source position is not well known. Several approaches for ambiguity resolution are briefly outlined.

Venus - Improved spin vector from Goldstone radar observations

Twenty-one radar images of the surface of Venus obtained between 1972 and 1982 have been compared to follow the motion of 28 distinct features. The delays and Doppler shifts of these features with respect to the subradar points on the various days were used in a nonlinear least-squares parameter estimation algorithm to refine the period and pole orientation of Venus. The period is found to be -243.022 + or - 0.003 days; the right ascension and declination of the pole are: alpha = 272.816 + or - 0.14 deg; beta = 67.218 + or - 0.05 deg (B1950). These standard error estimates attempt to include effects of systematic errors.

Goldstone solar system radar signal processing

A performance analysis of the planetary radar data acquisition system is presented. These results extend previous computer simulation analysis and are facilitated by the development of a simple analytical model that predicts radar system performance over a wide range of operational parameters. The results of this study are useful to both the radar system designer and the science investigator in establishing operational radar data acquisition parameters which result in the best systems performance for a given set of input conditions.

A new presentation of complex voltage data for Goldstone radar astronomy

A presentation method similar to a vector field display or a data-based grid has been used to visualize complex voltage test data taken over multiple subchannels. Unlike simple plots of all data points on the complex plane, the position of the data in the time series is part of the presentation, providing additional information to aid in fault isolation during readiness testing. The 'phase-magnitude' presentation, as it has come to be called, was designed for the demands of real-time data acquisition and processing with remote monitoring over low bandwidth communication links.

Goldstone radar contributions to Mars Pathfinder landing safety

Goldstar radar can provide topography 'profiles', statistical surface roughness, and radar images within a few degrees of the sub-Earth point. Goldstone/Very Large Array (VLA) bistatic radar observations can image the whole disk of Mars with integration times on the order of ten min before pixel smearing occurs. Data from all these radar techniques can be useful for observing the local surface conditions relating to landing safety issues for Mars Pathfinder.
