First-principles prediction of the Landau parameter for Fermi liquids near the unitarity limit

This paper explores the behavior of systems of cold fermions as they approach unitary above the critical temperature. Symmetry arguments indicate that at unitarity the Fermi-liquid picture breaks down. As we move away from unitarity, by decreasing the scattering length, the dilaton, the Goldstone boson resulting from the spontaneous breaking of Schrodinger symmetry by the Fermi sea, becomes gapped. At energies below this gap, the interaction between quasiparticles will be dominated by dilaton exchange. Here, the dilaton mass can, in turn, be related via anomaly matching to the scattering length and contact parameter within the confines of a systematic expansion.

Finite-momentum instability of a dynamical axion insulator

Due to the chiral anomaly, Weyl semimetals can exhibit a signature topological magnetoelectric response known as an axion term which is determined by the microscopic band structure. In the presence of strong interactions Weyl fermions may form a chiral condensate, with the intrinsic dynamics and fluctuations of the associated condensate phase producing a dynamical contribution to the axion response. Here we show that an imbalance in the density of right- and left-handed electrons drives an instability of the chiral condensate towards finite momentum and leads to strong fluctuations in the axion response. We derive a long-wavelength theory of Lifschitz type governing the dynamics of the Goldstone mode and use this to characterize its associated spatial fluctuations, which manifest as an inhomogeneous anomalous Hall effect. In conclusion, we show that these fluctuations produce signatures in inelastic light-scattering experiments across a broad spectrum of frequencies, and can be used to determine the structure factor for the axionic collective mode.

Theory of topological defects and textures in two-dimensional quantum orders with spontaneous symmetry breaking

In this article, we consider two-dimensional (2d) quantum many-body systems with long-range orders, where the only gapless excitations in the spectrum are Goldstone modes of spontaneously broken continuous symmetries. To understand the interplay between classical long-range order of local order parameters and quantum order of long-range entanglement in the ground states, we study the topological point defects and textures of order parameters in such systems. We show that the universal properties of point defects and textures are determined by the remnant symmetry enriched topological order in the symmetry-breaking ground states with a nonfluctuating order parameter, and provide a classification for their properties based on the inflation-restriction exact sequence. We highlight a few phenomena revealed by our theory framework. First, in the absence of intrinsic topological orders, we show a connection between the symmetry properties of point defects and textures to deconfined quantum criticality. Second, when the symmetry-breaking ground state has intrinsic topological orders, we show that the point defects can permute different anyons when braided around. They can also obey projective fusion rules in the sense that multiple vortices can fuse into an Abelian anyon, a phenomenon for which we coin “defect fractionalization.” Finally, we provide a formula to compute the fractional statistics and fractional quantum numbers carried by textures (skyrmions) in Abelian topological orders.

Benchmark calculations of pure neutron matter with realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions

Here, we report benchmark calculations of the energy per particle of pure neutron matter as a function of the baryon density using three independent many-body methods: Brueckner–Bethe–Goldstone, Fermi hypernetted chain/single-operator chain, and auxiliary-field diffusion Monte Carlo. Significant technical improvements are implemented in the latter two methods. The calculations are made for two distinct families of realistic coordinate-space nucleon-nucleon potentials fit to scattering data, including the standard Argonne v 18 interaction and two of its simplified versions, and four of the new Norfolk Δ -full chiral effective field theory potentials. Primarily because of the advancements in the auxiliary-field diffusion Monte Carlo, we observe good agreement among the three many-body techniques up to nuclear saturation density—the maximum difference in the energy per particle is within 1.5 MeV for all the potentials we consider. At higher densities, the divergences become more important, and are mainly driven by the Fermi hypernetted chain/single-operator calculations. We also study the connection between nucleon-nucleon scattering data and the energy per particle of pure neutron matter. Our results suggest that fitting to higher-energy nucleon-nucleon scattering helps reduce the spread of energies among the models.

Slope parameter of the symmetry energy and the structure of three-particle interactions in nuclear matter

In the first part of this paper, we present a study of the symmetry energy (a s ) and its slope parameter (L) for nuclear matter in the framework of the Fermi liquid theory of Landau and Migdal. We derive an exact relation between a s and L, which involves the nucleon effective masses and three-particle Landau-Migdal parameters. We present simple estimates which suggest that there are two main mechanisms to explain the empirical values of L: The proton-neutron effective mass difference in isospin asymmetric matter and the ℓ = 0 moment of the isovector in-medium three-particle scattering amplitude. In the second part of this paper, we discuss the general structure of three-particle interactions in nuclear matter in the framework of the Fermi liquid theory. The connections to the Bethe-Brueckner-Goldstone theory and other approaches are also discussed. Finally, we show explicitly how the first few terms in the Faddeev series, together with medium induced three-particle interactions, emerge naturally in the Fermi liquid theory.

Effective field theory of pairing rotations

Pairing rotations are the low-energy excitations of finite superfluid systems, connecting systems that differ in their number of Cooper pairs. This paper presents a model-independent derivation of pairing rotations within an effective theory that exploits the emergent breaking of U(1) phase symmetries. The symmetries are realized nonlinearly and the Nambu-Goldstone modes depend only on time because the system is finite. Semimagic nuclei exhibit pairing rotational bands while the pairing spectrum becomes an elliptical paraboloid for open-shell nuclei. Model-independent relations between double charge-exchange reactions and α particle capture or knockout in open-shell nuclei are in analogy to the pair transfer reactions in a single superfluid. Odd semimagic nuclei are described by coupling a fermion to the superfluid. Furthermore, the leading-order theories reproduce data for pairing rotational bands within uncertainty estimates.

Benchmark calculations of infinite neutron matter with realistic two- and three-nucleon potentials

In this study, we present the equation of state of infinite neutron matter as obtained from highly realistic Hamiltonians that include nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon coordinate-space potentials. We benchmark three independent many-body methods: Brueckner-Bethe-Goldstone (BBG), Fermi hypernetted chain/single-operator chain (FHNC/SOC), and auxiliary-field diffusion Monte Carlo (AFDMC). We find them to provide similar equations of state when the Argonne v 18 and the Argonne v' 6 nucleon-nucleon potentials are used in combination with the Urbana IX three-body force. Only at densities larger than about 1.5 the nuclear saturation density ( ρ 0 =0.16 fm ⁻3 ) the FHNC/SOC energies are appreciably lower than the other two approaches. The AFDMC calculations carried out with all of the Norfolk potentials fitted to reproduce the experimental trinucleon ground-state energies and nd doublet scattering length yield unphysically bound neutron matter, associated with the formation of neutron droplets. Including tritium β decay in the fitting procedure, as in the second family of Norfolk potentials, mitigates but does not completely resolve this problem. An excellent agreement between the BBG and AFDMC results is found for the subset of Norfolk interactions that do not make neutron-matter collapse, while the FHNC/SOC equations of state are moderately softer.

Cosmic birefringence test of the Hubble tension

A cosmic pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson has been proposed to resolve the four-sigma discrepancy between precision measurements of the expansion rate of the universe. We show this solution may also produce a cosmic birefringence (CB) signal in the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB); observations of the CB power spectrum and cross-correlation with the CMB can independently confirm the presence of this new boson. In this work, we find significant new contributions to the CB signal, and show that future CMB experiments will greatly improve sensitivity to CB and Hubble tension scenarios.

Application of dilaton chiral perturbation theory to N f = 8 , SU(3) spectral data

We extend dilaton chiral perturbation theory (dChPT) to include the taste splittings in the Nambu-Goldstone sector observed in lattice simulations of near-conformal theories with staggered fermions. We then apply dChPT to a recent simulation by the LSD collaboration of the SU(3) gauge theory with 8 fermions in the fundamental representation, which is believed to exhibit near-conformal behavior in the infrared, and in which a light singlet scalar state, nearly degenerate with the pions, has been found. We find that the mesonic sector of this theory can be successfully described by dChPT, including, in particular, the mesonic taste splittings found in the simulation. We confirm that current simulations of this theory are in the "large-mass" regime.

Conserved currents in five-dimensional proposals for lattice chiral gauge theories

We apply the Grabowska-Kaplan framework, originally proposed for lattice chiral gauge theories, to QCD. We show that the resulting theory contains a conserved and gauge invariant singlet axial current, both on the lattice and in the continuum limit. This must give rise to a difference with QCD, with the simplest possibility being a superfluous Nambu-Goldstone boson in the physical spectrum not present in QCD. We find a similar unwanted conserved current in the recent “disk” formalism, this time limiting ourselves to the continuum formulation. A similar problem is expected when either of these formalisms is used for its original goal of constructing lattice chiral gauge theories. Finally we discuss a conjecture about the possible dynamics that might be associated with the unwanted conserved current and the fate of ‘t Hooft vertices. Majorana neutrinos and dark matter from anomaly cancellation

We discuss a simple theory for neutrino masses where the total lepton number is a local gauge symmetry spontaneously broken below the multi-TeV scale. In this context, the neutrino masses are generated through the canonical seesaw mechanism and a Majorana dark matter candidate is predicted from anomaly cancellation. We discuss in great detail the dark matter annihilation channels and find out the upper bound on the symmetry-breaking scale using the cosmological bounds on the relic density. Since in this context the dark matter candidate has suppressed couplings to the Standard Model quarks, one can satisfy the direct detection bounds even if the dark matter mass is close to the electroweak scale. This theory predicts a light pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson (the Majoron) associated to the mechanism of neutrino mass. We discuss briefly the properties of the Majoron and the impact of the big bang nucleosynthesis bounds. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Dark matter relic density in strongly interacting dark sectors with light vector mesons

Stable dark matter particles may arise as pseudo-Goldstone bosons from the confinement of dark quarks interacting via a non-Abelian gauge force. Their relic abundance is determined not by annihilations into visible particles but by dark pion number-changing processes within the dark sector, such as 3 π D → 2 π D . However, if the dark vector mesons ρ D are light enough for 3 π D → π D ρ D annihilations to be kinematically allowed, this process dominates and significantly delays freeze-out. As a result, the preferred dark matter mass scale increases and bounds from the Bullet Cluster can be evaded. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Cosmological dynamics of string theory axion strings

The quantum chromodynamics (QCD) axion may solve the strong CP problem and explain the dark matter (DM) abundance of our Universe. The axion was originally proposed to arise as the pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson of global U⁢(1) PQ Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry breaking, but axions also arise generically in string theory as zero modes of higher-dimensional gauge fields. In this work we show that string theory axions behave fundamentally differently from field theory axions in the early Universe. Field theory axions may form axion strings if the PQ phase transition takes place after inflation. In contrast, we show that string theory axions do not generically form axion strings. In special inflationary paradigms, such as D-brane inflation, string theory axion strings may form; however, their tension is parametrically larger than that of field theory axion strings. We then show that such QCD axion strings overproduce the DM abundance for all allowed QCD axion masses and are thus ruled out, except in scenarios with large warping. A loop-hole to this conclusion arises in the axiverse, where an axion string could be composed of multiple different axion mass eigenstates; a heavier eigenstate could collapse the network earlier, allowing for the QCD axion to produce the correct DM abundance and also generating observable gravitational wave signals.

Nonlinear Sigma model amplitudes to all loop orders are contained in the Tr ( Φ 3 ) theory

Scattering amplitudes for the simplest theory of colored scalar particles—the Tr ( Φ 3 ) theory—have recently been the subject of active investigations. In this work we describe an unanticipated wider implication of this work: the Tr ( Φ 3 ) theory secretly contains nonlinear sigma model (NLSM) amplitudes to all loop orders. The NLSM amplitudes are obtained from Tr ( Φ 3 ) amplitudes by a unique shift of kinematic variables. We show that this shifted kinematics produces amplitudes for a cubic theory with a linear term in the potential, with extrema spontaneously breaking U ( N ) → U ( N − k ) × U ( k ) . The Goldstone amplitudes for this theory coincide with those of pions in the U ( N ) × U ( N ) → U ( N ) chiral Lagrangian to all orders in the planar limit. We also give a purely on-shell understanding of this correspondence, showing that integrands defined by the kinematic shifts have the correct residues on poles and appropriately produce the Adler zero. Finally, we discuss how similar kinematic shifts produce certain infinite classes of mixed amplitudes of pions and Tr ( Φ 3 ) scalars, most of which are not interpretable from the Lagrangian description. Impossible symmetries and conformal gravity

We explore the physics of relativistic gapless phases defined by a mixed anomaly between two generalized conserved currents. The gapless modes can be understood as Goldstone modes arising from the nonlinear realization of (generically higher-form) symmetries arising from these currents. In some cases, the anomaly cannot be reproduced by any local and unitary theory, indicating that the corresponding symmetries are impossible, in the sense that they cannot appear in a Lorentzian physical system. We give a general construction and illustrate it with several examples. Most notably, we study conformal gravity from this perspective, describing the higher-form symmetries of the linear theory and showing how it can be understood in terms of anomalies. Along the way we clarify some aspects of electric-magnetic duality in linear conformal gravity.

Bootstrapping gauge theories

We consider asymptotically free gauge theories with gauge group S U ( N c ) and N f quarks with mass m q ≪ Λ QCD that undergo chiral symmetry breaking and confinement. We propose a bootstrap method to compute the S matrix of the pseudo-Goldstone bosons (pions) that dominate the low-energy physics. For the important case of N c = 3 , N f = 2 , a numerical implementation of the method gives the phase shifts of the S 0 , P 1 and S 2 waves in good agreement with experimental results. The method incorporates gauge theory information ( N c , N f , m q , Λ QCD ) by using the form-factor bootstrap recently proposed by Karateev, Kuhn and Penedones together with a finite energy version of the Shifman-Vainshtein-Zakharov (SVZ) sum rules. At low energy we impose constraints from chiral symmetry breaking. The only low-energy numerical inputs are the pion mass m π and the quark and gluon condensates. Power counting of the pion-dilaton effective field theory

Confining QCD-like theories close to the conformal window have a “walking” coupling. This is believed to lead to a light singlet scalar meson in the low-energy spectrum, a dilaton, which is the pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson for the approximate scale symmetry. Extending chiral perturbation theory to include the dilaton requires a new small parameter to control the dilaton mass and its interactions. In our previous work we derived a systematic power counting for the dilaton couplings by matching the effective low-energy theory to the underlying theory using mild assumptions. In this paper we examine two alternative power countings which were proposed in the literature based on a phenomenological picture for the conformal transition. We find that one of these power countings fails, in fact, to generate a systematic expansion; the other coincides with the power counting we derived. We also point out that the so-called Δ -potential coincides with the tree-level potential of the former, invalid, power counting. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Gravitational Waves from Rapid Structure Formation on Microscopic Scales before Matter-Radiation Equality

We propose a new scenario for the formation of asteroid-mass primordial black holes (PBHs). Our mechanism is based on the annihilation of the string-wall network associated with thebreaking of a U(1) global symmetry into a discrete ZN symmetry. If the potential hasmultiple local minima (N > 1) the network is stable, and the annihilation is guaranteed by a biasamong the different vacua. The collapse of the string-wall network is accompanied bycatastrogenesis, a large production of pseudo-Goldstone bosons (pGBs) — e.g. axions,ALPs, or majorons — gravitational waves, and PBHs. If pGBs rapidly decay into products thatthermalize, as predicted e.g. in the high-quality QCD axion and heavy majoron models, they do notcontribute to the dark matter population, but we show that PBHs can constitute 100% of the darkmatter. The gravitational wave background produced by catastrogenesis with heavy unstable axions,ALPs, or majorons could be visible in future interferometers.
