Hadron-in-jet production at partonic threshold

We consider the longitudinal momentum distribution of hadrons inside jets in proton-proton collisions. At partonic threshold large double logarithmic corrections arise which need to be resummed to all orders. We develop a factorization formalism within SCET that allows for the joint resummation of threshold and jet radius logarithms. We achieve next-to-leading logarithmic NLL' accuracy by including non-global logarithms in the leading-color approximation. Overall, we find that the threshold resummation leads to a sizable enhancement of the cross section and a reduced QCD scale dependence, suggesting that the all-order resummation can be important for the reliable extraction of fragmentation functions in global analyses when jet substructure data is included.

Quantum real-time evolution of entanglement and hadronization in jet production: Lessons from the massive Schwinger model

The possible link between entanglement and thermalization, and the dynamics of hadronization are addressed by studying the real-time response of the massive Schwinger model coupled to external sources. This setup mimics the production and fragmentation of quark jets, as the Schwinger model and quantum chromodynamics (QCD) share the properties of confinement and chiral symmetry breaking. By using simulations of quantum dynamics on classical hardware, we study the entanglement between the produced jets, and observe the growth of the corresponding entanglement entropy in time. This growth arises from the increased number of contributing eigenstates of the reduced density matrix with sufficiently large and close eigenvalues. We also investigate the physical nature of these eigenstates, and find that at early times they correspond to fermionic Fock states. We then observe the transition from these fermionic Fock states to mesonlike bound states as a function of time. In other words, we observe how hadronization develops in real time. At late times, the local observables at midrapidity (such as the fermion density and the electric field) approach approximately constant values, suggesting the onset of equilibrium and approach to thermalization. Phenomenology of TMD parton distributions in Drell-Yan and 𝑍 0 boson production in a hadron structure oriented approach

We present a first practical implementation of a recently proposed hadron structure oriented (HSO) approach to transverse momentum dependent (TMD) phenomenology applied to Drell-Yan-like processes, including lepton pair production at moderate 𝑄 2 and 𝑍 0 boson production. We compare and contrast general features of our methodology with other common practices and emphasize aspects that we view as improvements. Separately, we discuss the importance of treatments that preserve various theoretical properties of the nonperturbative parts of TMD parametrizations for future applications that have the extraction of hadron structure as a primary goal. These include the HSO’s preservation of a basic TMD parton-model-like framework even while accounting for full TMD factorization and evolution, explicit preservation of the integral relationship between TMD and collinear parton density functions, and the ability to meaningfully compare different theoretical models of nonperturbative TMD parton distributions. In our examples, we show that there is significant sensitivity at moderate 𝑄 2 to both the form of the nonperturbative transverse momentum dependence and the parametrization of collinear parton densities. However, we also find that evolving to 𝑄 2 =𝑀$^2_𝑍$, without fitting, results in a satisfactory postdiction of existing data for 𝑍0 production, nearly independently of the modeling of nonperturbative transverse momentum behavior. We argue that this demonstrates that moderate 𝑄 measurements should be given greater weight than high 𝑄 measurements in extractions of nonperturbative transverse momentum dependence. We also obtain new extractions of the nonperturbative Collins-Soper kernel within the HSO approach. We discuss its features and compare with some earlier extractions.

Production of light-flavor hadrons in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}~=~7\text { and }\sqrt{s} = 13 \, \text { TeV} $

The production of \(\pi ^{\pm }\) , \(\mathrm{K}^{\pm }\) , \(\mathrm{K}^{0}_{S}\) , \(\mathrm{K}^{*}(892)^{0}\) , \(\mathrm{p}\) , \(\phi (1020)\) , \(\Lambda \) , \(\Xi ^{-}\) , \(\Omega ^{-}\) , and their antiparticles was measured in inelastic proton–proton (pp) collisions at a center-of-mass energy of \(\sqrt{s}\) = 13 TeV at midrapidity ( \(|y|<0.5\) ) as a function of transverse momentum ( \(p_{\mathrm{T}}\) ) using the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC. Furthermore, the single-particle \(p_{\mathrm{T}}\) distributions of \(\mathrm{K}^{0}_{S}\) , \(\Lambda \) , and \(\overline{\Lambda }\) in inelastic pp collisions at \(\sqrt{s} = 7\) TeV are reported here for the first time. The \(p_{\mathrm{T}}\) distributions are studied at midrapidity within the transverse momentum range \(0\le p_{\mathrm{T}}\le 20\) GeV/ c , depending on the particle species. The \(p_{\mathrm{T}}\) spectra, integrated yields, and particle yield ratios are discussed as a function of collision energy and compared with measurements at lower \(\sqrt{s}\) and with results from various general-purpose QCD-inspired Monte Carlo models. A hardening of the spectra at high \(p_{\mathrm{T}}\) with increasing collision energy is observed, which is similar for all particle species under study. The transverse mass and \(x_{\mathrm{T}}\equiv 2p_{\mathrm{T}}/\sqrt{s}\) scaling properties of hadron production are also studied. As the collision energy increases from \(\sqrt{s}\) = 7–13 TeV, the yields of non- and single-strange hadrons normalized to the pion yields remain approximately constant as a function of \(\sqrt{s}\) , while ratios for multi-strange hadrons indicate enhancements. The \(p_\mathrm{{T}}\) -differential cross sections of \(\pi ^{\pm }\) , \(\mathrm {K}^{\pm }\) and \(\mathrm {p}\) ( \(\overline{\mathrm{p}}\) ) are compared with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations, which are found to overestimate the cross sections for \(\pi ^{\pm }\) and \(\mathrm{p}\) ( \(\overline{\mathrm{p}}\) ) at high \(p_\mathrm{{T}}\) .

Nonresonant central exclusive production of charged-hadron pairs in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV

The central exclusive production of charged-hadron pairs in p p collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV is examined, based on data collected in a special high- β * run of the LHC. The nonresonant continuum processes are studied with the invariant mass of the centrally produced two-pion system in the resonance-free region, m π + π − < 0.7 or m π + π − > 1.8 GeV . Differential cross sections as functions of the azimuthal angle between the surviving protons, squared exchanged four-momenta, and m π + π − are measured in a wide region of scattered proton transverse momenta, between 0.2 and 0.8 GeV, and for pion rapidities | y | < 2 . A rich structure of interactions related to double-pomeron exchange is observed. A parabolic minimum in the distribution of the two-proton azimuthal angle is observed for the first time. It can be interpreted as an effect of additional pomeron exchanges between the protons from the interference between the bare and the rescattered amplitudes. After model tuning, various physical quantities are determined that are related to the pomeron cross section, proton-pomeron and meson-pomeron form factors, pomeron trajectory and intercept, and coefficients of diffractive eigenstates of the proton. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS and TOTEMs Collaboration 2024 CERN

Search for high-mass resonances in a final state comprising a gluon and two hadronically decaying W bosons in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for high-mass resonances decaying into a gluon, g, and two W bosons is presented. A Kaluza-Klein gluon, g$_{KK}$, decaying in cascade via a scalar radion R, g$_{KK}$ → gR → gWW, is considered. The final state studied consists of three large-radius jets, two of which contain the products of hadronically decaying W bosons, and the third one the hadronization products of the gluon. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC during 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{−1}$. The masses of the g$_{KK}$ and R candidates are reconstructed as trijet and dijet masses, respectively. These are used for event categorization and signal extraction. No excess of data events above the standard model background expectation is observed. Upper limits are set on the product of the g$_{KK}$ production cross section and its branching fraction via a radion R to gWW. This is the first analysis examining the resonant WW+jet signature and setting limits on the two resonance masses in an extended warped extra-dimensional model.

Extracting the \(\Lambda \) Polarizing Fragmentation Function from Belle e + e − Data within the TMD Formalism

Data from the Belle Collaboration for associated production (with a light unpolarized hadron) and single-inclusive production of transversely polarized Λ-hyperons in e + e − annihilation processes allowed to extract within a TMD approach, for the first time, the Λ polarizing fragmentation function. Recent theoretical developments on the computation of cross sections for single-inclusive hadron production in e + e − annihilation processes, within a Soft Collinear Effective Theory approach, combined with the CSS formalism for the double-hadron production case, can be used to perform a renewed analysis, adopting a full TMD factorization scheme. Preliminary results and a comparison between the two analyses are presented.

Observation of Enhanced Double Parton Scattering in Proton-Lead Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$= 8.16 TeV

A study of prompt charm-hadron pair production in proton-lead collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}$ = 8.16 TeV is performed using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 30 nb -1 , collected with the LHCb experiment. Production cross sections for different pairs of charm hadrons are measured and kinematic correlations between the two charm hadrons are investigated. This is the first measurement of associated production of two charm hadrons in proton-lead collisions. The results confirm the predicted enhancement of double parton scattering production in proton-lead collisions compared to the single parton scattering production.

Measurement of spin-density matrix elements in 𝜙⁡(1020) → 𝐾$^{0}_{𝑆}$⁢𝐾$^{0}_{𝐿}$ photoproduction with a linearly polarized photon beam at 𝐸 𝛾 = 8.2–8.8 GeV

We measure the spin-density matrix elements (SDMEs) for the photoproduction of 𝜙⁡(1020) off of the proton in its decay to 𝐾$^{0}_{𝑆}$⁢𝐾$^{0}_{𝐿}$, using 105 pb −1 of data collected with a linearly polarized photon beam using the GlueX experiment. The SDMEs are measured in nine bins of the squared four-momentum transfer 𝑡 in the range −𝑡=0.15−1.0 GeV 2 , providing the first measurement of their 𝑡 dependence for photon beam energies of 𝐸 𝛾 = 8.2−8.8 GeV. We confirm the dominance of Pomeron exchange in this region and put constraints on the contribution of other Regge exchanges. We also find that helicity amplitudes where the helicity of the photon and 𝜙⁡(1020) differ by two units are negligible.

MTA Secondary Beamline Production and Optics Optimization

A new secondary beamline was recently installed in the MeV Test Area (MTA) with the objective of enhancing mu+/mu- production by factors of 3/8 by using a tungsten target versus the conventional graphite production target using the 400 MeV Fermilab proton Linac beam. Ultra-low energy muon beams can support world-class physics experiments for fundamental muon measurements, sensitive searches for symmetry violation, and precision tests of theory. Extensive production studies have confirmed higher muon yield from heavy targets (tungsten vs carbon), but also, surprisingly, showed significant differences in production fluence and energy spectrum between modern hadronic models (GENIEhad) and between GEANT and MCNP. Studies are also underway towards a high-efficiency source of muonium by stopping the mu+ beam in superfluid helium. Muon fluxes can be measured at MTA including using higher-Z and novel target geometries to test hadronic and production models which are critical to understanding ongoing experiments (Mu2e) and will significantly impact the planning of future HEP experiments and planning PIP II facilities. The MTA beamline will additionally support a broad user muon test beam for future experiments and R&D.

Using data samples of 102 million ϒ⁡(1⁢𝑆) events and 158 million ϒ⁡(2⁢𝑆) events collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy 𝑒+⁢𝑒− collider, we search for [𝑢⁢𝑑⁢𝑠⁢𝑐$\overline{𝑐}$ ] pentaquark states decaying to 𝐽/𝜓⁢Λ. Using the first observations of ϒ⁡(1⁢𝑆,2⁢𝑆) inclusive decays to 𝐽/𝜓⁢Λ, we find evidence of the 𝑃 𝑐$\overline{𝑐}$𝑠 ⁢(4459) 0 state with a local significance of 3.3 standard deviations, including statistical and systematic uncertainties. We measure the mass and width of the 𝑃 𝑐$\overline{𝑐}$𝑠 ⁢(4459) 0 to be (4471.7±4.8±0.6) MeV/𝑐 2 and (22 ±13 ±3) MeV, respectively. The branching fractions for 𝑃 𝑐$\overline{𝑐}$𝑠 ⁢(4459) 0 production are measured to be ℬ⁡[ϒ⁡(1⁢𝑆)→𝑃 𝑐$\overline{𝑐}$𝑠 ⁢(4459)0/ $\overline{𝑃}$ 𝑐$\overline{𝑐}$𝑠 ⁢(4459) 0 +anything]=(3.5±2.0±0.2)×10 −6 and ℬ⁡[ϒ⁡(2⁢𝑆)→𝑃 𝑐$\overline{𝑐}$𝑠 ⁢(4459) 0 /$\overline{𝑃}$ 𝑐$\overline{𝑐}$𝑠 ⁢(4459) 0 +anything]=(2.9±1.7±0.4)×10 −6 . The inclusive branching fractions of ϒ⁡(1⁢𝑆,2⁢𝑆) →𝐽/𝜓⁢Λ/$\overline{Λ}$ are measured to be ℬ⁡[ϒ⁡(1⁢𝑆) →𝐽/𝜓⁢Λ/$\overline{Λ}$ +anything] =(36.9 ±5.3 ±2.4) ×10 −6 and ℬ⁡[ϒ⁡(2⁢𝑆) →𝐽/𝜓⁢Λ/$\overline{Λ}$ +anything] =(22.3 ±5.7 ±3.1) ×10 −6 . We measure the visible cross section 𝜎⁡(𝑒+⁢𝑒−→𝐽/𝜓⁢Λ/ $\overline{Λ}$ +anything)=(90±14±6) fb for the continuum production at √𝑠 =10.52 GeV. In all cases, the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic.

Multi-messenger heavy-ion collision physics

We report that this work studies the production of direct photons in relativistic nuclear collisions, along with the production of hadrons. Radiation from the very first instants to the final moments of the evolution is included. The hybrid model used here describes all stages of relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Chronologically, those are an initial state reflecting the collision of nuclei described within the Color Glass Condensate effective theory; a pre-equilibrium phase based on non-equilibrium linear response; relativistic viscous hydrodynamics, and a hadronic afterburner. The effect of the preequilibrium phase on both photonic and hadronic observables is highlighted for the first time. The potential of photon observables - spectrum, differential elliptic and triangular flow - to reveal the chemical equilibration time is studied. Finally, we consider "small collision systems", including proton+nucleus collisions and collisions of light nuclei, as probed by hadronic and electromagnetic observables. We demonstrate how photon production can signal the formation of quark-gluon plasma in such small systems.
