Single‐Crystal to Single‐Crystal Transformations: Stepwise CO 2 Insertions into Bridging Hydrides of [(NHC)CuH] 2 Complexes

Abstract Mechanistic studies of substrate insertion into dimeric [(NHC)CuH] 2 (NHC=N‐heterocyclic carbene) complexes with two bridging hydrides have been shown to require dimer dissociation to generate transient, highly reactive (NHC)Cu−H monomers in solution. Using single‐crystal to single‐crystal (SC‐SC) transformations, we discovered a new pathway of stepwise insertion of CO 2 into [(NHC)CuH] 2 without complete dissociation of the dimer. The first CO 2 insertion into dimeric [(IPr*OMe)CuH] 2 (IPr*OMe=N,N′‐bis(2,6‐bis(diphenylmethyl)‐4‐methoxy‐phenyl)imidazole‐2‐ylidene) produced a dicopper formate hydride [(IPr*OMe)Cu] 2 (μ‐1,3‐O 2 CH)(μ‐H). A second CO 2 insertion produced a dicopper bis(formate), [(IPr*OMe)Cu] 2 (μ‐1,3‐O 2 CH)(μ‐1,1‐O 2 CH), containing two different bonding modes of the bridging formate. These dicopper formate complexes are inaccessible from solution reactions since the dicopper core cleanly ruptures to monomeric complexes when dissolved in a solvent.

Redesigned Nylon 6 Variants with Enhanced Recyclability, Ductility, and Transparency

Abstract Geminal ( gem −) disubstitution in heterocyclic monomers is an effective strategy to enhance polymer chemical recyclability by lowering their ceiling temperatures. However, the effects of specific substitution patterns on the monomer's reactivity and the resulting polymer's properties are largely unexplored. Here we show that, by systematically installing gem ‐dimethyl groups onto ϵ‐caprolactam (monomer of nylon 6) from the α to ϵ positions, both the redesigned lactam monomer's reactivity and the resulting gem ‐nylon 6’s properties are highly sensitive to the substitution position, with the monomers ranging from non‐polymerizable to polymerizable and the gem ‐nylon properties ranging from inferior to far superior to the parent nylon 6. Remarkably, the nylon 6 with the gem ‐dimethyls substituted at the γ position is amorphous and optically transparent, with a higher T g (by 30 °C), yield stress (by 1.5 MPa), ductility (by 3×), and lower depolymerization temperature (by 60 °C) than conventional nylon 6.

Oxidation of Ammonia Catalyzed by a Molecular Iron Complex: Translating Chemical Catalysis to Mediated Electrocatalysis

Abstract Ammonia is a promising candidate in the quest for sustainable, clean energy. With its capacity to serve as an energy carrier, the oxidation of ammonia opens avenues for carbon‐neutral approaches to address worldwide growing energy needs. We report the catalytic chemical oxidation of ammonia by an Earth‐abundant transition metal complex, trans ‐ [LFe II (MeCN) 2 ][PF 6 ] 2 , where L is a macrocyclic ligand bearing four N ‐heterocyclic carbene (NHC) donors. Using triarylaminium radical cations in MeCN, up to 182 turnovers of N 2 per Fe were obtained from chemical catalysis with an extremely low loading of the Fe catalyst (0.043 mM, 0.004 mol % catalyst). This chemical catalysis was successfully transitioned to mediated electrocatalysis for the oxidation of ammonia. Molecular electrocatalysis by the Fe catalyst and the mediator ( p ‐MeOC 6 H 4 ) 3 N exhibited a catalytic half‐wave potential ( E cat/2 ) of 0.18 V vs [Cp 2 Fe] +/0 in MeCN, and achieved 9.3 turnovers of N 2 at an applied potential of 0.20 V vs [Cp 2 Fe] +/0 at −20 °C in controlled‐potential electrolysis, with a Faradaic efficiency of 75 %. Based on computational results, the catalyst undergoes sequential oxidation and deprotonation steps to form [LFe IV (NH 2 ) 2 ] 2+ , and thereafter bimetallic coupling to form an N−N bond.

Copper Complexes with Diazoolefin Ligands and their Photochemical Conversion into Alkenylidene Complexes

Homometallic copper complexes with alkenylidene ligands are discussed as intermediates in catalysis but the isolation of such complexes has remained elusive. Herein, we report the structural characterization of copper complexes with bridging and terminal alkenylidene ligands. The compounds were obtained by irradiation of CuI complexes with N-heterocyclic diazoolefin ligands. Furthermore, the complex with a terminal alkenylidene ligand required isolation in a crystalline matrix, and its structural characterization was enabled by in crystallo photolysis at low temperature.

Trigonal Planar Bis (carbene)Cu(I) Complexes Enable Divergent H 2 Activation with H 2 O for Accelerated Olefin Hydrogenation

CuH-catalyzed olefin hydrogenation is rare compared to those of carbonyl-derived substrates. Olefin insertion into Cu–H to form Cu-alkyl is ubiquitous; however, subsequent H 2 activation remains unknown to our knowledge. Herein, we investigated the transformations of β-H elimination, H 2 cleavage, and catalytic olefin hydrogenation in a series of linear and trigonal planar Cu(I)-alkyl complexes supported by monodentate N-heterocyclic carbene and bidentate naphthyridine- bis (carbene) ligands, respectively. Contrary to unreactive linear species, trigonal planar variants promote β-H elimination, hydrogenolysis, and catalytic hydrogenation of unactivated alkenes at mild temperatures and H 2 pressure. The rare isolation of a naphthyridine- bis (carbene)CuH monomer further affirms two predominant competing pathways for H 2 cleavage of metal–ligand cooperativity at Cu(I)-alkyl or internal electrophilic substitution at Cu(I)-OH. Employing either isolated or in situ generated Cu(I)-OH complex, via protonolysis of alkyl precatalyst by adventitious water, significantly accelerated catalysis compared to that operating primarily by the metal–ligand cooperativity pathway. DFT calculations and energy decomposition analysis on the disparate β-H elimination reactivity between linear and trigonal planar tert-butyl complexes and the mechanism of H 2 activation at a hydroxide complex, indicate that coordination geometry at Cu(I) and properties of the naphthyridine- bis (carbene) ligand are integral to the transformations reported here.

Binding, Release and Functionalization of Intact Pnictogen Tetrahedra Coordinated to Dicopper Complexes

The bridging MeCN ligand in the dicopper(I) complexes [(DPFN)Cu 2 (μ,η 1 : η 1 -MeCN)][X] 2 (X=weakly coordinating anion, NTf 2 (1 a), FAl[OC 6 F 10 (C 6 F 5 )] 3 (1 b), Al[OC(CF 3 ) 3 ] 4 (1 c)) was replaced by white phosphorus (P 4 ) or yellow arsenic (As 4 ) to yield [(DPFN)Cu 2 (μ,η 2 : η 2 -E 4 )][X] 2 (E=P (2 a-c), As (3 a-c)). The molecular structures in the solid state reveal novel coordination modes for E 4 tetrahedra bonded to coinage metal ions. Experimental data and quantum chemical computations provide information concerning perturbations to the bonding in coordinated E 4 tetrahedra. Reactions with N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) led to replacement of the E 4 tetrahedra with release of P 4 or As 4 and formation of [(DPFN)Cu 2 (μ,η 1 : η 1 - Me NHC)][X] 2 (4 a,b) or to an opening of one E-E bond leading to an unusual E 4 butterfly structural motif in [(DPFN)Cu 2 (μ,η 1 : η 1 -E 4 Dipp NHC)][X] 2 (E=P (5 a,b), E=As (6)). With a cyclic alkyl amino carbene ( Et CAAC), cleavage of two As-As bonds was observed to give two isomers of [(DPFN)Cu 2 (μ,η 2 : η 2 -As 4 Et CAAC)][X] 2 (7 a,b) with an unusual As 4 -triangle+1 unit.

Compound 3 is converted to monothiolate-complexed (5) and N-heterocyclic carbene-complexed (7) germanium(II) dithiolene complexes via Lewis base ligand exchange. A bis-dithiolene-based germylene (8), involving a 3c–4e S-Ge-S bond, has also been synthesized through controlled hydrolysis of 7. The bonding nature of 3, 5, and 8 was investigated by both experimental and theoretical methods.

Designing Cyclic Nitrogen‐Bridged Sulfonamides with Anti‐Cancer Activity

The N-bridgehead heterocyclic structure is an abundant motif in a multitude of natural products. This structural feature is of high interest because it is present in many different bioactive molecules, many of which are well-established pharmaceuticals. The introduction of a sulfone group into the N-bridgehead system yields a new core structure containing a N-bridgehead sulfonamide. While linear sulfonamides can be found in natural products, only artificial cyclic sulfonamides are known to date. Applications of related cyclic sulfonamide compounds include matrix metalloproteinase inhibitors, potential HIV and cancer therapeutics, and anti-inflammatory compounds. To explore the potential bioactivity of the N-bridgehead sulfonamide scaffold, a synthetic route toward these scaffolds is developed and their bioactivity is explored against different cancer cell lines.

Singly and doubly oxidized carbenes and their applications in catalysis

Over the last three decades, the highly tunable properties of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) and other stable singlet carbenes have led to a variety of applications. This perspective shows a novel facet of carbenes—i.e., their reductive properties—that allows them to function as catalysts in single-electron transfer (SET) reactions. The isolation and even the spectroscopic characterization of a singly oxidized carbene have yet to be done, but these species readily abstract hydrogen atoms while giving back the carbene conjugate acid, which behaves as the resting state of catalytic cycles. In sharp contrast, a doubly oxidized carbene has been isolated, and there is a strong likelihood that many other carbene dications will be isolated. Their first Lewis acidity is very high, suggesting possible applications in Lewis acid catalysis.

Exploration of imatinib and nilotinib-derived templates as the P2-Ligand for HIV-1 protease inhibitors: Design, synthesis, protein X-ray structural studies, and biological evaluation

Structure-based design, synthesis, X-ray structural studies, and biological evaluation of a new series of potent HIV-1 protease inhibitors are described. Here, these inhibitors contain various pyridyl-pyrimidine, aryl thiazole or alkylthiazole derivatives as the P2 ligands in combination with darunavir-like hydroxyethylamine sulfonamide isosteres. These heterocyclic ligands are inherent to kinase inhibitor drugs, such as nilotinib and imatinib. These ligands are designed to make hydrogen bonding interactions with the backbone atoms in the S2 subsite of HIV-1 protease. Various benzoic acid derivatives have been synthesized and incorporation of these ligands provided potent inhibitors that exhibited subnanomolar level protease inhibitory activity and low nanomolar level antiviral activity. Two high resolution X-ray structures of inhibitor-bound HIV-1 protease were determined. These structures provided important ligand-binding site interactions for further optimization of this class of protease inhibitors.

Toward sustainable production of N-containing products via nonthermal plasma-enhanced conversion of natural gas resources

Nonthermal plasmas can directly activate and cleave the strong chemical bonds in molecular nitrogen and methane to facilitate the transformation of these inherently stable molecules through the application of electrical energy. Here, we report a low temperature, atmospheric pressure, nonthermal plasma for the “one-pot” synthesis of olefins, alkynes, higher molecular weight hydrocarbons, ammonia, and nitrogen-containing liquids from a representative shale gas feed enriched with nitrogen. Furthermore, we reproducibly observe a wide range of valuable and synthetically challenging gas-phase and liquid-phase products containing C-N, C-C, and N-H bonding by controlling the N 2 concentration in the inlet feed stream. In nitrogen-lean regimes, hydrocarbon products dominate (e.g., ethylene, acetylene, etc.), while nitrogen-rich regimes promote incorporation of nitrogen into the products, leading to the formation of ammonia and liquid products containing a variety of functionalities (e.g., nitriles, amines, heterocycles). High resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry was used to measure molecular weights and identify the chemical formulas of the liquid products. Van Krevelen diagrams were created and showed many products with compositions around H/C = 2 and N/C = 0.5, indicating the potential importance of intermediate species with these ratios for liquid formation (e.g., CH 3 CN + H).

Amine functionalized supported ionic liquid membranes (SILMs) for CO 2 /N 2 separation

Supported ionic liquid membranes (SILMs), containing aprotic N-heterocyclic anion ionic liquids (AHA ILs) in an inorganic inert support, exhibit CO 2 /N 2 permselectivity values as high as 640 at 35.0 °C and 0.03 bar CO 2 , which represents conditions similar to post-combustion carbon capture (PCCC) from a natural gas power plant. A Fickian model fit to the experimental data estimates CO 2 permeability at direct air capture (DAC) conditions of 10,400 barrer and a CO 2 /N 2 permselectivity of 4000 for the best performing IL, triethyl(octyl)phosphonium 4-bromopyrazolide ([P 2228 ][4-BrPyra]). The most important criterion for high selectivity is a large equilibrium constant for binding between the IL and CO 2 , which results in high CO 2 solubility. ILs with smaller molar volumes and with no fluoroalkyl chains enhance N 2 rejection. As a result, low viscosity and high IL molar density also enhance CO 2 /N 2 permselectivity and CO 2 permeance.

Supported ionic liquid membranes (SILMs) with exceptional selectivity and permeability for dilute CO 2 separations

Supported ionic liquid membranes (SILMs), containing phosphonium ionic liquids with aprotic N-heterocyclic anions (AHA ILs) in an inert inorganic support, were tested under both dry and humidified (40 % RH) mixed-gas conditions down to 420 ppm CO 2 in N 2 at 35 °C. In the dry case, the best performing IL, triethyl(octyl)phosphonium 4-bromopyrazolide ([P 2228 ][4-BrPyra]) exhibited mixed-gas CO 2 permeabilities and CO 2 /N 2 permeability selectivities as high as 26,800 barrer and 7,000, respectively. In the presence of humidity, the CO 2 permeability and CO 2 /N 2 selectivity increased to 49,100 barrer and 13,200, respectively, and these are the highest reported combination in the literature. Humidity amplifies CO 2 permeabilities and CO 2 /N 2 permeability selectivities through increases in CO 2 capacity due to bicarbonate formation and through faster mobility of the mobile carrier from decreased viscosity. Furthermore, N 2 permeability stayed roughly invariant in the presence of humidity, likely from competing effects of viscosity reduction and lower N 2 solubility.

Bisoxazoline-pincer ligated cobalt-catalyzed hydrogenation of alkenes

The efficient and atom economical hydrogenation of alkenes using a novel bisoxazoline ligated cobalt complex has been developed here. The hydrogenation of a variety of alkenes containing electron neutral and electron-donating groups proceeds in high yield, while electron-withdrawing and sterically hindered groups are not tolerated. Heterocycles and internal alkenes were further hydrogenated in moderate to high yields. While the catalyst is enantiopure, no enantioinduction was observed suggesting that other factors are involved in achieving enantiocontrol.
