A new approach to helicopter rotor blade research instrumentation

A rotor-blade-mounted telemetry instrumentation system developed and used in flight tests by the NASA/Langley Research Center is described. The system uses high-speed digital techniques to acquire research data from miniature pressure transducers on advanced rotor airfoils which are flight tested using an AH-1G helicopter. The system employs microelectronic PCM multiplexer-digitizer stations located remotely on the blade and in a hub-mounted metal canister. The electronics contained in the canister digitizes up to 16 sensors, formats this data with serial PCM data from the remote stations, and transmits the data from the canister which is above the plane of the rotor. Data is transmitted over an RF link to the ground for real-time monitoring and to the helicopter fuselage for tape recording.

Wind Energy System Time-domain (WEST) analyzers using hybrid simulation techniques

Two stand-alone analyzers constructed for real time simulation of the complex dynamic characteristics of horizontal-axis wind energy systems are described. Mathematical models for an aeroelastic rotor, including nonlinear aerodynamic and elastic loads, are implemented with high speed digital and analog circuitry. Models for elastic supports, a power train, a control system, and a rotor gimbal system are also included. Limited correlation efforts show good comparisons between results produced by the analyzers and results produced by a large digital simulation. The digital simulation results correlate well with test data.

Thermal Pollution Mathematical Model. Volume 3: User's Manual for One-Dimensional Numerical Model for the Seasonal Thermocline

A user's manual for a one dimensional thermal model to predict the temperature profiles of a deep body of water for any number of annual cycles is presented. The model is essentially a set of partial differential equations which are solved by finite difference methods using a high speed digital computer. The model features the effects of area change with depth, nonlinear interaction of wind generated turbulence and buoyancy, adsorption of radiative heat flux below the surface, thermal discharges, and the effects of vertical convection caused by discharge. The main assumption in the formulation is horizontal homogeneity. The environmental impact of thermal discharges from power plants is emphasized. Although the model is applicable to most lakes, a specific site (Lake Keowee, S.C.) application is described in detail. The programs are written in FORTRAN 5.

Principal normal curvature of surfaces

Certain principal normal curvatures of differential geometry were developed for use in curvature matrices associated with the asymptotic solution of electromagnetic diffraction problems. The effort is directed toward microwave antenna simulations and high speed digital computer analysis of radiometric instruments used to obtain soil moisture, sea state, salinity and temperature data. It is shown that the methods used to develop the principal normal curvatures for paraboloid, hyperboloid, ellipsoid, sphere, and cone can be applied to other radiometer geometries such as the parabolic torus, even though the surface parameterizations are different. It is concluded that deployable offset geometries, distorted by rotational forces and solar loads may be analyzed by similar means given a suitable surface description.

NASA electronic message experiment and study: Detailed test plans

A methodology for evaluating the utility of high speed digital facsimile as a component of the projected NASA-wide electronic message network is presented. Equipment checkout, operator familiarization, pretest calibration, and the development of procedures are addressed. An experimental test program of the facsimile message service which will carry duplicates of the actual messages sent by other means is highlighted. Also, an operational test program during which messages will be sent on a regular basis in order to accumulate the information that will be used to evaluate system performance and project future growth is described.

Fresnel-region fields and antenna noise-temperature calculations for advanced microwave sounding units

A transition from the antenna noise temperature formulation for extended noise sources in the far-field or Fraunhofer-region of an antenna to one of the intermediate near field or Fresnel-region is discussed. The effort is directed toward microwave antenna simulations and high-speed digital computer analysis of radiometric sounding units used to obtain water vapor and temperature profiles of the atmosphere. Fresnel-region fields are compared at various distances from the aperture. The antenna noise temperature contribution of an annular noise source is computed in the Fresnel-region (D squared/16 lambda) for a 13.2 cm diameter offset-paraboloid aperture at 60 GHz. The time-average Poynting vector is used to effect the computation.

Wind energy system time-domain (WEST) analyzers

A portable analyzer which simulates in real time the complex nonlinear dynamics of horizontal axis wind energy systems was constructed. Math models for an aeroelastic rotor featuring nonlinear aerodynamic and inertial terms were implemented with high speed digital controllers and analog calculation. This model was combined with other math models of elastic supports, control systems, a power train and gimballed rotor kinematics. A stroboscopic display system graphically depicting distributed blade loads, motion, and other aerodynamic functions on a cathode ray tube is included. Limited correlation efforts showed good comparison between the results of this analyzer and other sophisticated digital simulations. The digital simulation results were successfully correlated with test data.

Characteristics of RF Lightning Emission at 2 Ghz and 250 Mhz

Radio frequency emissions in the S-band and VHF range from lightning discharges are recorded by a facility developed at MSFC as part of a feasibility study of a satellite-based lightning mapping system. The recording facility receives RF emissions in both vertical and horizontal polarization and stores the data on magnetic tape. Output from any one antenna may also be selected for high speed digitization and disk storage. Improvement in both hardware and software have enhanced significantly the accuracy of data characterization and the speed of data collection. Emission records at VHF have higher signal strength than the S-band as expected. The records of cloud-to-ground discharges obtained so far give a 7-33 V/M peak equivalent signal strength (1 KHz at 10 kilometer) in the S-band range. The CG discharge structure is recognizable in most of the data collected. Considerable RF activity is present throughout the VHF records. The S-band data shows signals associated with limited portions of discharge history. The records obtained are from lightning activities within a 10 mile range.

Development of land based radar polarimeter processor system

The processing subsystem of a land based radar polarimeter was designed and constructed. This subsystem is labeled the remote data acquisition and distribution system (RDADS). The radar polarimeter, an experimental remote sensor, incorporates the RDADS to control all operations of the sensor. The RDADS uses industrial standard components including an 8-bit microprocessor based single board computer, analog input/output boards, a dynamic random access memory board, and power supplis. A high-speed digital electronics board was specially designed and constructed to control range-gating for the radar. A complete system of software programs was developed to operate the RDADS. The software uses a powerful real time, multi-tasking, executive package as an operating system. The hardware and software used in the RDADS are detailed. Future system improvements are recommended.

Directional velocity analyzer for measuring electron distribution functions in plasmas

A directional velocity analyzer has been developed for measuring electron distribution functions in plasmas. It contains a collimating aperture which selects particles from a narrow cone in velocity space and a retarding potential analyzer. The distribution function f(v, theta, phi) is obtained from a large number of analyzer traces taken at different angles theta, phi. In addition, the small analyzer can be moved in space and the measurements are time resolved so as to obtain the complete phase space information f(v,r,t). The large data flow of this seven-variable function is processed with a high-speed digital data-acquisition system. The new electron velocity analyzer is applicable over a wide parameter range in electron energies and densities. Various cases of anisotropic distributions such as beams, shells, tails, and drifts have been successfully investigated.

Langley advanced real-time simulation (ARTS) system

A system of high-speed digital data networks was developed and installed to support real-time flight simulation at the NASA Langley Research Center. This system, unlike its predecessor, employs intelligence at each network node and uses distributed 10-V signal conversion equipment rather than centralized 100-V equipment. A network switch, which replaces an elaborate system of patch panels, allows the researcher to construct a customized network from the 25 available simulation sites by invoking a computer control statement. The intent of this paper is to provide a coherent functional description of the system. This development required many significant innovations to enhance performance and functionality such as the real-time clock, the network switch, and improvements to the CAMAC network to increase both distances to sites and data rates. The system has been successfully tested at a usable data rate of 24 M. The fiber optic lines allow distances of approximately 1.5 miles from switch to site. Unlike other local networks, CAMAC does not buffer data in blocks. Therefore, time delays in the network are kept below 10 microsec total. This system underwent months of testing and was put into full service in July 1987.

NBC boil-off calorimeter for measuring thermal conductivity of insulating materials

Modern temperature, pressure and flow sensors along with a high speed digital control system have been incorporated into an existing thermal conductivity apparatus (ASTM C745). The system has also been modified to include the use of liquid helium as the refrigerant, if desired. The apparatus can be used to study thermal conductivity in the temperature range from 4 K to room temperature. Preliminary results on insulating materials indicate that the system update has significantly improved the precision and operational characteristics of the apparatus. Basic principles of operation, sources of system error and the reduction of system error by application of digital control and modern sensors are discussed. Preliminary data are presented.

Stability of a rigid rotor supported on oil-film journal bearings under dynamic load

Most published work relating to dynamically loaded journal bearings are directed to determining the minimum film thickness from the predicted journal trajectories. These do not give any information about the subsynchronous whirl stability of journal bearing systems since they do not consider the equations of motion. It is, however, necessary to know whether the bearing system operation is stable or not under such an operating condition. The stability characteristics of the system are analyzed. A linearized perturbation theory about the equilibrium point can predict the threshold of stability; however it does not indicate postwhirl orbit detail. The linearized method may indicate that a bearing is unstable for a given operating condition whereas the nonlinear analysis may indicate that it forms a stable limit cycle. For this reason, a nonlinear transient analysis of a rigid rotor supported on oil journal bearings under: (1) a unidirectional constant load, (2) a unidirectional periodic load, and (3) variable rotating load are performed. The hydrodynamic forces are calculated after solving the time-dependent Reynolds equation by a finite difference method with a successive overrelaxation scheme. Using these forces, equations of motion are solved by the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method to predict the transient behavior of the rotor. With the aid of a high-speed digital computer and graphics, the journal trajectories are obtained for several different operating conditions.

Improved ranging systems

Spacecraft range measurements have provided the most accurate tests, to date, of some relativistic gravitational parameters, even though the measurements were made with ranging systems having error budgets of about 10 meters. Technology is now available to allow an improvement of two orders of magnitude in the accuracy of spacecraft ranging. The largest gains in accuracy result from the replacement of unstable analog components with high speed digital circuits having precisely known delays and phase shifts.

Data quality analysis at the National Transonic Facility

The data quality analysis program that was developed at Langley Research Center's National Transonic Facility is described. The program provides a computer driven systematic analysis of data taken during calibrations of the high speed digital data acquisition system. Five distinct checks that are performed on the calibration data are outlined. The five checks are for non-linearity, noise, short term drift, long term drift, and the proper functioning of the calibrator. The program has established a standard set of evaluation guidelines.
