Bottom-up evolution of perovskite clusters into high-activity rhodium nanoparticles toward alkaline hydrogen evolution

Self-reconstruction has been considered an efficient means to prepare efficient electrocatalysts in various energy transformation process for bond activation and breaking. However, developing nano-sized electrocatalysts through complete in-situ reconstruction with improved activity remains challenging. Herein, we report a bottom-up evolution route of electrochemically reducing Cs 3 Rh 2 I 9 halide-perovskite clusters on N-doped carbon to prepare ultrafine Rh nanoparticles (~2.2 nm) with large lattice spacings and grain boundaries. Various in-situ and ex-situ characterizations including electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance experiments elucidate the Cs and I extraction and Rh reduction during the electrochemical reduction. These Rh nanoparticles from Cs 3 Rh 2 I 9 clusters show significantly enhanced mass and area activity toward hydrogen evolution reaction in both alkaline and chlor-alkali electrolyte, superior to liquid-reduced Rh nanoparticles as well as bulk Cs 3 Rh 2 I 9 -derived Rh via top-down electro-reduction transformation. Theoretical calculations demonstrate water activation could be boosted on Cs 3 Rh 2 I 9 clusters-derived Rh nanoparticles enriched with multiply sites, thus smoothing alkaline hydrogen evolution.

Molecular insights into the in situ early-stage assembly of metal–organic frameworks on cellulose nanofibrils

The integration of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) into renewable matrices, including those derived from cellulose, to create cellulose/MOF hybrids has attracted significant interest due to the synergistic combination of cellulosic biopolymer properties and MOFs' multifunctional features. The interfacial interactions between cellulose and MOF not only ensure stable bonding, but ultimately also determine the bulk physical properties of the macroscopic composites. However, the mechanistic understanding of the in situ assembly between the two materials remains unclear. In this study, we employ a combination study of synthesis, experimental characterization, and molecular dynamics simulations to explore the early-stage assembly of a cellulose/MOF hybrid. Our results revealed that the growth of MOF clusters on the 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (TOCNF) follows an inhomogeneous sequential transformation pathway. The carboxylates of TOCNF form coordination-like bonds with the metal ions, while the hydroxyl groups of TOCNF form hydrogen bonds with MOF ligands. These interactions provide the initial nucleation sites that mediate the growth of MOF clusters and also guide the assembly of larger MOF clusters onto the TOCNF substrate. In conclusion, the fundamental insights into the in situ assembly of MOF nanoparticles on cellulosic substrates are essential for the rational design of high-performance materials with tailored morphology and optimized properties.

Structural evidence for intermediates during O 2 formation in photosystem II

In natural photosynthesis, the light-driven splitting of water into electrons, protons and molecular oxygen forms the first step of the solar-to-chemical energy conversion process. The reaction takes place in photosystem II, where the Mn 4 CaO 5 cluster first stores four oxidizing equivalents, the S 0 to S 4 intermediate states in the Kok cycle, sequentially generated by photochemical charge separations in the reaction center and then catalyzes the O–O bond formation chemistry. Here, we report room temperature snapshots by serial femtosecond X-ray crystallography to provide structural insights into the final reaction step of Kok’s photosynthetic water oxidation cycle, the S 3 →[S 4 ]→S 0 transition where O 2 is formed and Kok’s water oxidation clock is reset. Our data reveal a complex sequence of events, which occur over micro- to milliseconds, comprising changes at the Mn 4 CaO 5 cluster, its ligands and water pathways as well as controlled proton release through the hydrogen-bonding network of the Cl1 channel. Importantly, the extra O atom O x , which was introduced as a bridging ligand between Ca and Mn1 during the S 2 →S 3 transition disappears or relocates in parallel with Y z reduction starting at approximately 700 μs after the third flash. The onset of O 2 evolution, as indicated by the shortening of the Mn1–Mn4 distance, occurs at around 1,200 μs, signifying the presence of a reduced intermediate, possibly a bound peroxide.
