Shear History Extensional Rheology Experiment II (SHERE II) Microgravity Rheology with Non-Newtonian Polymeric Fluids

The primary objective of SHERE II is to study the effect of torsional preshear on the subsequent extensional behavior of filled viscoelastic suspensions. Microgravity environment eliminates gravitational sagging that makes Earth-based experiments of extensional rheology challenging. Experiments may serve as an idealized model system to study the properties of lunar regolith-polymeric binder based construction materials. Filled polymeric suspensions are ubiquitous in foods, cosmetics, detergents, biomedical materials, etc.

Photosynthetic Gas Exchange in the Closed Ecosystem for Space. Phase II, Part II. Studies on the Growth of Thermophilic Chlorella 71105

Bench-scale studies with Chlorella pyrenoidosa 71105 were conducted in four- and eight-liter culture vessels, with and without recycling. It was established that the algal strain could be maintained for periods up to 72 days with supplemented re-cycled medium. In a factorial series of experiments, the highest yields were obtained with a 2.0% concentration of carbon dioxide, a 0.07 dilution factor (nutrient dilution rate/culture volume), and an 8.5 ft(exp -1) ratio of light surface to liquid culture volume. Optimum pH and concentrations of the constituents of the growth medium were determined in corollary test-tube studies. Other test-tube studies showed that the nutrient medium used for mass culture could be stored up to five weeks at 25 C or at refrigerator temperature (4 C) with little change in nitrogen-urea level. Algal suspensions stored at 4 C remained viable for periods of at least 12 weeks; growth resumed after a lag period when stored suspensions were cultured at 39 C. Streptomycin was found suitable for controlling a blue-green containment.

Stellar evolution. ii. the hydrogen-burning phase of a star of 7.0 solar masses <sternentwicklung. ii. die wasserstoff- brennende phase eines sterns von 7.0 sonnenmassen<

With the computer program by Hofmeister, Kippenhahn, Weigert (1964, from now on referred to as ''I") the evolution of a population I star of 7.0 solar masses has been followed. The results presented here are based on a sequence of 119 models, the first of which represents the homogeneous main sequence state and has a convective core containing 26% of the mass. The following models describe the phase of depletion of hydrogen in the core, which is shrinking in mass until the convection around the centre disappears. After this the gradual development of a hydrogen burning shell source is shown. The models show the evolution into the red giant region, while the helium core is contracting until helium burning starts at the centre and a new convective core is built up. The luminousity is increased about 1 magnitude compared with the main sequence state. At the same time the outer convective region grows in mass and covers at the maximum 71% of the total mass of the star. During the evolution to the red giant state, the evolutionary track crosses the region of the cepheids. Some aspects of the corresponding models are discussed.
