Further studies on the dimensionless parameters associated with the 'in vivo' transport of heat within biological tissue.

Dimensionless parameters appearing in the analysis of transport of heat within living biological tissues are presented and discussed. Dimensional analysis as well as some analytical solutions have been employed to obtain the physically and physiologically most significant dimensionless parameters associated with these types of problems. Some analytical solutions are presented for both steady state and transient cases to illustrate the significance of the derived parameters.-

Parathyroid hormone - Secretion and metabolism in vivo.

Gel filtration and radioimmunoassay were used to determine the molecular size and immunochemical reactivity of parathyroid hormone present in gland extracts, in the general peripheral circulation, and in parathyroid effluent blood from patients with hyperparathyroidism, as well as from calves and from cattle. It was found that parathyroid hormone secreted from the parathyroids in man and cattle is at least as large as the molecule extracted from normal bovine glands. However, once secreted into the circulation the hormone is cleaved, and one or more fragments, immunologically, dissimilar to the originally secreted hormone, constitute the dominant form of circulating immunoreactive hormone.

In vivo measurement of mechanical impedance of bone

System of measurement provides indications of ulnar properties independent of characteristics of surrounding soft tissue and other bones. Mechanical modal approximated ulnar response so average bending rigidity could be determined to provide direct index of bone resistance to bending loading.

Multiwavelength laser induced fluorescence of algae in-vivo - A new remote sensing technique

In order to accurately determine the quantity of chlorophyll a in living algae by fluorescence spectrometry, either remotely or in the laboratory, the fluorescence excitation cross section must be known. Laboratory fluorescence studies of a number of different algae species representative of the various color groups were performed. These measurements indicate distinct maximum spectral excitation regions which differ from one color group to another. Within each color group, however, the fluorescent properties were nearly identical, regardless of species. These two key features - namely, the similarity of fluorescent properties within a color group, and the distinct spectral differences between color groups - make possible the simultaneous determination of chlorophyll a content of an unknown mixture of phytoplankton and the distribution of chlorophyll a among the various color groups.

Determination of bone mineral mass in vivo

Radiographic equipment incorporates two radiation sources, generating high-energy and low-energy beams. Recording equipment measures amount of radiation that has penetrated limb. Data are fed into computer that determines mass of the examined bone.

In vivo measurement of human body composition

The female bed rest study has shown that, the response of women to prolonged recumbency of 2 to 3 weeks duration is very similar to that displayed by men. Some of the key findings in the women after 17 days of continuous recumbency are: (1) a decrease in plasma volume of 12-13 per cent; (2) a small decrease in total body water; (3) a decrease in total body potassium of 3 to 4 per cent; (4) a decrease in plasma potassium concentration of 4 to 5 per cent; (5) a decrease in total circulating plasma protein of 11 to 12 per cent; (6) a decrease in urinary norepinephrine excretion rate of 27 to 28 per cent; (7) a possible increase in urinary magnesium, calcium, and phosphate excretion rates; and (8) a possible increase in urinary citrate excretion rate.

Skeletal status and soft tissue composition in astronauts. Tissue and fluid changes by radionuclide absorptiometry in vivo

A device has been constructed and tested which provides immediate readout of bone mineral content and bone width from absorptiometric scans with low energy radionuclides. The basis of this analog system is a logarithmic converter-integrator coupled with a precision linear ratemeter. The system provided accurate and reliable results on standards and ashed bone sections. Clinical measurements were made on about 100 patients with the direct readout system, and these were highly correlated with the results from digital scan data on the same patients. The direct readout system has been used successfully in field studies and surveys as well as for clinical observations.
