The Curious Case of Pu + : Insight on 5f Orbital Activity from Inductively Coupled Plasma Tandem Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS/MS) Reactions

A comprehensive understanding of when and how 5f orbitals participate in complex chemical bonding is important for a variety of applications. The actinides are unique in that they possess 5f orbitals and can access high oxidation states, which make them attractive for use in catalysis. Fundamental studies of actinide–ligand interactions offer a mechanism to examine the activation of the 5f orbitals so that the selectivity of 5f orbitals can be assessed. A previous study examined the reaction of Pu + + CO 2 and determined that the reaction efficiency is restricted by a barrier, namely, promotion from the Pu + ground-state configuration, 5f 6 7s, to a reactive-state configuration, 5f 5 6d 2 . Here, the present study illustrates the benefit of activation of Pu’s 5f orbitals when studying the reaction of Pu + + NO. In this reaction, PuO + forms in an exothermic, barrierless process. The 5f orbitals can and do participate in forming a linear intermediate, [N-Pu-O] + , and this drives the exothermic reaction. Understanding the conditions under which 5f orbitals are active in chemical bonding is the key to exploiting the actinides’ selective catalytic capabilities.

Chiral induction at the nanoscale and spin selectivity in electron transmission in chiral methylated BEDT-TTF derivatives

Great efforts have been made in the last few decades to realize electronic devices based on organic molecules. A possible approach in this field is to exploit the chirality of organic molecules for the development of spintronic devices, an applicative way to implement the chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect. In this work we exploit enantiopure tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) derivatives as chiral inducers at the nanoscale. The aim is to make use of TTF's well-known and unique semiconducting properties, to be expressed in the fields of enantio-selectivity and the chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect. Further, the experimental results shown in this paper further demonstrate how chirality and spin are deeply interrelated, as foreseen within the CISS effect theory, paving the way for the application of TTF derivatives in the field of spintronics. In this work, we demonstrate that tetramethyl-bis(ethylenedithio)-tetrathiafulvalene (TM-BEDT-TTF) (1) behaves as an efficient spin filter, as evidenced by magneto-atomic force microscopy (mc-AFM) measurements. Additionally, it is shown to be effective in transferring chirality to CdS/CdSe core–shell nanoparticles, as inferred from the analysis of circularly resolved photoluminescence spectra. This makes 1 a promising candidate for a variety of applications, ranging from plasmonics to quantum computing.

Ultrafast optical induction of magnetic order at a quantum critical point

Abstract Time-resolved ultrafast spectroscopy has emerged as a promising tool to dynamically induce and manipulate non-trivial electronic states of matter out-of-equilibrium. Here we theoretically investigate light pulse driven dynamics in a Kondo lattice system close to quantum criticality. Based on a time-dependent auxiliary fermion mean-field calculation we show that light can dehybridize the local Kondo screening and induce oscillating magnetic order out of a previously paramagnetic state. Depending on the laser pulse field amplitude and frequency the Kondo singlet can be completely deconfined, inducing a dynamic Lifshitz transition that changes the Fermi surface topology. These phenomena can be identified in harmonic generation and time-resolved angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy spectra. Our results shed new light on non-equilibrium states in heavy fermion systems.

Core inductive electric field during sawtooth crashes on DIII-D

Sawtooth crashes on tokamak plasmas exhibit relaxation much faster than resistive time scales via a mechanism not fully understood. Using core magnetic measurements from the Radial Interferometer-Polarimeter (RIP) diagnostic on the DIII-D tokamak, Grad–Shafranov equilibria constrained by internal magnetic measurements that have high time resolution (<1μs) can be computed, allowing analysis of how equilibrium parameters such as safety factor q, current density J, and parallel electric field E ∥ , particularly on-axis, evolve. At the sawtooth crash, on-axis safety factor q 0 is observed to rise by 5% but remain below 1 throughout the cycle, and on-axis current density J 0 is observed to drop by 5%. On-axis parallel electric field E ∥ (0) is found to be balanced by ηJ 0 (resistivity times on-axis current density) except during the 200 µs crash period, where E ∥ (0) reaches 22 V m –1 , exceeding ηJ 0 by a factor of more than 2000. These first measurements in tokamak plasmas verify that generalized Ohm's law is not balanced during the crash by resistive effects alone; this is a finding expected due to the relaxation being much faster than resistive timescales. As a result, measurement of the electric field during the tokamak sawtooth serves to illuminate the physical mechanisms at work.

High-Power Polyphase PCB-Type Inductive Coupler for Wireless Electric Vehicle Charging

The cost and manufacturing difficulty of traditionally wound coils for wireless charging of electric vehicles has led to the exploration of alternative manufacturing for scalable deployment at a range of rated powers. A rotating-field polyphase wireless coupler is developed with balanced fully pitched coils which are not possible with conventional Litz wire. The usage of printed circuit board (PCB) technology is proposed for the innovative construction at large dimensions due to reduced cost, increased ease of manufacturability, and potential geometric customization compared to would coils. Design considerations specific to PCBs are detailed for wireless power transfer coils including advantages such as the potential for many turns and transposition with planar interconnections. A design procedure is developed which may be used to investigate the frequency to power to dimension correlation and limits associated with PCB coils. Designs are simulated in 3D electromagnetic finite element analysis (FEA) for the polyphase coil to evaluate the coupling between coils with varying geometric parameters at 100mm and 500mm outer diameters. A discussion is included on methods to increase PCB power ratings through a mixture of layer stacking, connections, and material selection.

Local carbon reserves are insufficient for phloem terpene induction during drought in Pinus edulis in response to bark beetle–associated fungi

Stomatal closure during drought inhibits carbon uptake and may reduce a tree's defensive capacity. Limited carbon availability during drought may increase a tree's mortality risk, particularly if drought constrains trees' capacity to rapidly produce defenses during biotic attack. We parameterized a new model of conifer defense using physiological data on carbon reserves and chemical defenses before and after a simulated bark beetle attack in mature Pinus edulis under experimental drought. Attack was simulated using inoculations with a consistent bluestain fungus (Ophiostoma sp.) of Ips confusus, the main bark beetle colonizing this tree, to induce a defensive response. Trees with more carbon reserves produced more defenses but measured phloem carbon reserves only accounted for c. 23% of the induced defensive response. Our model predicted universal mortality if local reserves alone supported defense production, suggesting substantial remobilization and transport of stored resin or carbon reserves to the inoculation site. Our results show that de novo terpene synthesis represents only a fraction of the total measured phloem terpenes in P. edulis following fungal inoculation. Without direct attribution of phloem terpene concentrations to available carbon, many studies may be overestimating the scale and importance of de novo terpene synthesis in a tree's induced defense response.
