Scanned Image Projection System Employing Intermediate Image Plane

In imaging system, a spatial light modulator is configured to produce images by scanning a plurality light beams. A first optical element is configured to cause the plurality of light beams to converge along an optical path defined between the first optical element and the spatial light modulator. A second optical element is disposed between the spatial light modulator and a waveguide. The first optical element and the spatial light modulator are arranged such that an image plane is created between the spatial light modulator and the second optical element. The second optical element is configured to collect the diverging light from the image plane and collimate it. The second optical element then delivers the collimated light to a pupil at an input of the waveguide.

Comparison of Coincident Multiangle Imaging Spectroradiometer and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer Aerosol Optical Depths over Land and Ocean Scenes Containing Aerosol Robotic Network Sites

The Multiangle Imaging Spectroradiometer (MISR) and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), launched on 18 December 1999 aboard the Terra spacecraft, are making global observations of top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiances. Aerosol optical depths and particle properties are independently retrieved from these radiances using methodologies and algorithms that make use of the instruments corresponding designs. This paper compares instantaneous optical depths retrieved from simultaneous and collocated radiances measured by the two instruments at locations containing sites within the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET). A set of 318 MISR and MODIS images, obtained during the months of March, June, and September 2002 at 62 AERONET sites, were used in this study. The results show that over land, MODIS aerosol optical depths at 470 and 660 nm are larger than those retrieved from MISR by about 35% and 10% on average, respectively, when all land surface types are included in the regression. The differences decrease when coastal and desert areas are excluded. For optical depths retrieved over ocean, MISR is on average about 0.1 and 0.05 higher than MODIS in the 470 and 660 nm bands, respectively. Part of this difference is due to radiometric calibration and is reduced to about 0.01 and 0.03 when recently derived band-to-band adjustments in the MISR radiometry are incorporated. Comparisons with AERONET data show similar patterns.

Evaluating Electroluminescence Imaging and Image Processing as a Quantitative Solar Cell Characterization Method

Mitigating dust accumulation on the surface of solar arrays is crucial for maintaining maximum power output. We propose investigating electroluminescence imaging paired with image processing as a means of evaluating various dust mitigation techniques. Image processing was able to clearly differentiate between pristine and dusted solar cells. Paired with traditional analysis techniques, this method proves to be a quick and powerful characterization tool.

Spaceborne Imaging Radar-C: An Advanced Imaging Radar Studied the Earth

None given. From Intro: The U.S. launched the most sophisticated imaging radar ever on-board the space shuttle Endeavor twice within a year as part of NASA's Mission to Planet Earth Program. Survey image products were available within three months following each of the missions. Most important aspect of SIR-C products is that the images are calibrated.The interferometry experiment conducted during the second flight clearly demonstrated that global high-resolution topographic maps are within the reach of current SAR technology.

X-ray and gamma-ray imaging with multiple-pinhole cameras using a posteriori image synthesis.

In 1968, Dicke had suggested that multiple-pinhole camera systems would have significant advantages concerning the SNR in X-ray and gamma-ray astronomy if the multiple images could be somehow synthesized into a single image. The practical development of an image-synthesis method based on these suggestions is discussed. A formulation of the SNR gain theory which is particularly suited for dealing with the proposal by Dicke is considered. It is found that the SNR gain is by no means uniform in all X-ray astronomy applications.

Parametric analysis of an imaging radar for use as an imaging radar for use as an independent landing monitor

The capabilities are analyzed of a real aperture, forward-looking imaging radar for use as an independent landing monitor, which will provide the pilot with an independent means of assessing the progress of an automatic landing during Category 3 operations. The analysis shows that adequate ground resolution and signal-to-noise ratio can be obtained to image a runway with grassy surroundings using a radar operating at 35 GHz in good weather and in most fog but that performance is severely degraded in moderate to heavy rain and wet snow. Weather effects on a 10 GHz imager are not serious, with the possible exception of very heavy rain, but the azimuthal resolution at 10 GHz is inadequate with antennas up to 2 m long.

Application of ERTS images and image processing to regional geologic problems and geologic mapping in northern Arizona

The author has identified the following significant results. Computer image processing was shown to be both valuable and necessary in the extraction of the proper subset of the 200 million bits of information in an ERTS image to be applied to a specific problem. Spectral reflectivity information obtained from the four MSS bands can be correlated with in situ spectral reflectance measurements after path radiance effects have been removed and a proper normalization has been made. A detailed map of the major fault systems in a 90,000 sq km area in northern Arizona was compiled from high altitude photographs and pre-existing published and unpublished map data. With the use of ERTS images, three major fault systems, the Sinyala, Bright Angel, and Mesa Butte, were identified and their full extent measured. A byproduct of the regional studies was the identification of possible sources of shallow ground water, a scarce commodity in these regions.

Image 100 procedures manual development: Applications system library definition and Image 100 software definition

An outline for an Image 100 procedures manual for Earth Resources Program image analysis was developed which sets forth guidelines that provide a basis for the preparation and updating of an Image 100 Procedures Manual. The scope of the outline was limited to definition of general features of a procedures manual together with special features of an interactive system. Computer programs were identified which should be implemented as part of an applications oriented library for the system.

The imaging photopolarimeter - The first extraterrestrial spin-scan imager

The paper describes the imaging photopolarimeter used to take close-ups of Jupiter from Pioneers 10 and 11. The instrument operates in a steerable spin-scan mode of operation, contains a 1 in. diameter, f/3.4 Maksutov telescope with a focal plane aperture whose size is selectable. The paper examines those aspects of the design that are substantially influenced by the unusual design constraints, such as choice of detector and method of steering the telescope, and demonstrates the image processing and display techniques used to create the images from the telemetry and correct them for distortion and other defects.

Voyager image processing at the Image Processing Laboratory

This paper discusses new digital processing techniques as applied to the Voyager Imaging Subsystem and devised to explore atmospheric dynamics, spectral variations, and the morphology of Jupiter, Saturn and their satellites. Radiometric and geometric decalibration processes, the modulation transfer function, and processes to determine and remove photometric properties of the atmosphere and surface of Jupiter and its satellites are examined. It is exhibited that selected images can be processed into 'approach at constant longitude' time lapse movies which are useful in observing atmospheric changes of Jupiter. Photographs are included to illustrate various image processing techniques.

Images of Jupiter from the Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11 Infrared Radiometers - A comparison with visible and 5-micron images

The images with geometric control which present Pioneer 10 and 11 Infrared Radiometer data aquired at Jupiter are compared with 5.0-micron and visible images taken in the same time frame. It is found that (1) at 5.0, 20 and 45 microns, the association of dark and light areas with warm and cool areas, respectively, extends to nearly all features observed on the planet; (2) where the normal association of light and dark visible markings with the zone velocity breaks down, the infrared emission seems to follow the visible cloud structure rather than the zonal velocity structure; and (3) exceptions to the general rule involve 20-micron radiation, which reflects conditions in the 0.1-0.3 bar altitude range. A comparison of Pioneer 10 and 11 images suggests that the South Equatorial Belt became brighter at 20 microns, yet remained constant at other wavelengths between the two encounters.

NASA image-based geological expert system development project for hyperspectral image analysis

The NASA image-based geological expert system was applied to analyze remotely sensed hyperspectral image data. The major objective is for geologists to identify the earth surface mineral properties directly from the airborne and spaceborne imaging spectrometer data. With certain constraints, it is shown that the system can identify correctly different classes of mineral. It has the built-in learning paradigm to enhance the confidence factor of mineral identification. A very powerful natural language system was incorporated as the user-friendly front end, and the concurrent processing efficiency of the frame-based knowledge representation in the hypercube microsupercomputer simulation was tested.

Shifting Of Image Fields For Better Stereoscopic TV Images

Concept for shifting horizontal positions of TV image fields of stereoscopic TV display reduces stereoscopic depth distorting while increasing stereoscopic depth resolution of images. Applicable to form of stereoscopic TV in which two views of scene presented by two video cameras to different fields of one monitor. According to concept, view of left camera shifts to left, and right camera, to right. Images made to overlap, so observed comfortably. Shifting done by inexpensive electronic circuitry.

Streaking images that appear only in the plane of diffraction in undoped GaAs single crystals: Diffraction imaging (topography) by monochromatic synchrotron radiation

Streaking images restricted to the direction of the diffraction (scattering) vector have been observed on transmission through undoped GaAs. These disruption images (caused by the reduction of diffraction in the direction of observation) appear both in the forward and in Bragg diffracted directions in monochromatic synchrontron radiation diffraction imaging. This previously unobserved phenomenon can be explained in terms of planar defects (interfaces) or platelets which affects the absorption coefficient in anomalous transmission. Such regions of the crystal look perfect despite the presence of imperfections when the scattering vector is not perpendicular to the normal of the platelets. The observed crystallographic orientation of these interfaces strongly indicates that they are antiphase boundaries.

Image processing software for imaging spectrometry data analysis

Imaging spectrometers simultaneously collect image data in hundreds of spectral channels, from the near-UV to the IR, and can thereby provide direct surface materials identification by means resembling laboratory reflectance spectroscopy. Attention is presently given to a software system, the Spectral Analysis Manager (SPAM) for the analysis of imaging spectrometer data. SPAM requires only modest computational resources and is composed of one main routine and a set of subroutine libraries. Additions and modifications are relatively easy, and special-purpose algorithms have been incorporated that are tailored to geological applications.

Enhancement of structure images of interstellar diamond microcrystals by image processing

Image processed high resolution TEM images of diamond crystals found in oxidized acid residues of carbonaceous chondrites are presented. Two models of the origin of the diamonds are discussed. The model proposed by Lewis et al. (1987) supposes that the diamonds formed under low pressure conditions, whereas that of Blake et al (1988) suggests that the diamonds formed due to particle-particle collisions behind supernova shock waves. The TEM images of the diamond presented support the high pressure model.
