Emergence of pseudoresonance in high-intensity resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

We report resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra of neon atoms interacting with intense x-ray pulses generated using an x-ray free-electron laser (XFEL). We find that an unexpected peak emerges near the 𝐾⁢𝛼 line of Ne, which does not coincide with any physical resonances of neon ions. We perform theoretical calculations based on a quantum-state-resolved rate-equation approach with x-ray-induced processes including possible resonant excitations. Our dynamics simulations demonstrate that a sequence of multiple resonant photoabsorption events are involved and the interplay of those multiple resonances in combination with the relatively large spectral bandwidth of XFEL radiation leads to the emergent resonance-like structure at a position where no resonances exist. Our finding offers critical guidance for future applications of high-intensity RIXS at XFEL facilities.

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering in the topological semimetal FeSi

The energy spectrum of topological semimetals contains protected degeneracies in reciprocal space that correspond to Weyl, Dirac, or multifold fermionic states. To exploit the unconventional properties of these states, one has to access the electronic structure of the three-dimensional bulk. In this paper, we present a joint theory-experiment study of the electronic structure of a candidate topological semimetal with resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). We resolve the bulk electronic states of FeSi using momentum-dependent RIXS at the Fe L 3 edge. We observe a broad excitation continuum devoid of sharp features, consistent with particle-hole scattering in an underlying electronic band structure. Using density functional theory (DFT), we calculate the electronic structure of FeSi and derive a band theory formulation of RIXS in the fast collision approximation to model the scattering process with zero adjustable parameters. While band theory predicts an excitation continuum with broad spectral features similar to the observed ones, discrepancies between theory and experiment suggest the presence of low-energy processes that DFT alone does not account for. Further, this study of RIXS in a topological semimetal shows that RIXS is a useful tool for revealing unanticipated behavior of bulk electronic states in this class of materials.

Spin-Orbit-Lattice Entangled State in A 2 ⁢MgReO 6 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba) Revealed by Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering

The 5d 1 ordered double perovskites present an exotic playground for studying novel multipolar physics due to large spin-orbit coupling. Here, we present Re L 3 edge resonant inelastic Xray scattering (RIXS) results that reveal the presence of the dynamic Jahn-Teller effect in the A 2 MgReO 6 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba) family of 5d 1 double perovskites. The spin-orbit excitations in these materials show a strongly asymmetric lineshape and exhibit substantial temperature dependence, indicating that they are dressed with lattice vibrations. Our experimental results are explained quantitatively through a RIXS calculation based on a spin-orbit-lattice entangled electronic ground state with the dynamic Jahn-Teller effect taken into consideration. We find that the spin-orbitlattice entangled state is robust against magnetic and structural phase transitions as well as against significant static Jahn-Teller distortions. Our results illustrate the importance of including vibroniccoupling for a complete description of the ground state physics of 5d 1 double perovskites.

Exploring a New Regime of Molecular Orbital Physics in 4⁢d Cluster Magnets with Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering

Molecular orbital systems with clusters of heavy transition metal (TM) ions are one of the most important classes of model materials for studying the interplay between local physics and effects of itinerancy. Despite a large number of candidates identified in the family of 4⁢d TM materials, an understanding of their physics from competing microscopic energy scales is still missing. Here, we bridge this gap by reporting the first resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurement on a well-known series of Ru cluster magnets with a 6⁢H-perovskite structure Ba 3 ⁢M⁢Ru 2 ⁢O 9 (M 3+ = In 3+ , Y 3+ , La 3+ ) comprised of Ru dimers. In addition to providing a microscopic explanation for their anomalous magnetic properties, our RIXS measurements combined with theoretical modeling uncover a new regime of molecular orbital physics where the combined effect of large hopping and small spin-orbit coupling results in highly fragile electronic states in the Ru-dimer compounds directly manifested as an abrupt change in the RIXS spectrum accompanying a tiny change in the local structure tuned by the M-site ion. This unique combination of energy scales found only in the 4⁢d but not the 5⁢d cluster magnets highlights the value of these materials as a new platform for studying quantum phase transition involving molecular orbitals.

Phonon second harmonic generation in NaBr studied by inelastic neutron scattering and computer simulation

The phenomenon of second harmonic generation (SHG) was found for phonons in anharmonic NaBr by inelastic neutron scattering. The temperature dependence of this phonon SHG was measured from 300 K to 650 K. At 300 K the second harmonic (SH) is seen as a high-energy branch around 33 meV, nearly independent of $\overrightarrow{Q}$. The temperature effective potential (TDEP) method and classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulation with machine learning interatomic potential were able to reproduce the SH, and showed that SHG occurs with the flat transverse optical (TO) phonon branch. A classical model of a nonlinear medium explains the intensity and lifetime of the SH, compared to those of the TO modes. Also successful was a quantum model based on the Heisenberg-Langevin equation for interacting phonons coupled to a thermal bath, which also predicts a spectral distribution of the SH. In conclusion, the measured temperature dependence of the intensity of the second harmonic showed that it follows the Planck distribution of a one-phonon quasiparticle, and not two TO phonons.

Single-valued representation of unpolarized and polarized semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering at next-to-next-to-leading order

We revisit the recently published analytic results for unpolarized and polarized semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in quantum chromodynamics (QCD). These expressions for the hard scattering coefficients contain case distinctions in the kinematic (𝑥,𝑧)-plane, splitting the analytic result into four regions. By reexpressing the coefficient functions in terms of single-valued polylogarithms, we remove these case distinctions and can present a unified result valid across the entire kinematic range of SIDIS. This reduces the length of the overall expressions by 30% to 60%.

pathSQE : an automated workflow for single-crystal inelastic neutron scattering data processing and analysis

Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments utilizing modern time-of-flight spectrometers enable the comprehensive mapping of the energy (E)- and momentum (Q)-resolved dynamical structure factor of single crystals, probing both the lattice and magnetic excitations. Yet, the large size and complexity of four-dimensional INS data are challenging current analysis workflows, often resulting in an underutilization of the measured information. To help address this issue, this paper introduces new software interfaced with the Mantid framework, pathSQE, designed to streamline the processing, analysis and interpretation of 4D single-crystal INS data. By automating key tasks such as 1D/2D slicing, symmetrization, Brillouin zone folding, data visualization, prioritization and filtering, and comparisons with simulations, pathSQE facilitates and accelerates INS data analysis workflows. Here, this paper outlines the features and implementation and provides several illustrations of the use of pathSQE on data collected on single crystals using direct-geometry time-of-flight spectrometers at the Spallation Neutron Source, including Ge, FeSi, MnO and SnS single-crystal measurements on the ARCS, HYSPEC and CNCS neutron spectrometers. Beyond streamlining post-experiment data processing, pathSQE establishes an automated and modular processing pipeline that could support future real-time experiment steering.

Tagged deep inelastic scattering measurement on deuterium with the LAD experiment

Here, the origin of the modification of the quark structure of nucleons in the nuclear medium can be tested with tagged recoil nucleon measurements from deep inelastic scattering off electrons on deuterium. The LAD experiment at the Thomas Jefferson National Laboratory (JLab) will measure the modification of the neutron structure function for high-momentum, highly-virtual neutrons by measuring the spectator recoil protons in coincidence with the scattered electron. An update on the experimental setup and projected results is presented. The experiment will collect data in Fall 2024.

A New Inelastic Neutron Spectrometer HODACA

In this study, a new multiplex-type inelastic neutron scattering spectrometer, HOrizontally Defocusing Analyzer Concurrent data Acquisition spectrometer (HODACA), was recently developed and built at the C1-1 cold neutron beam port in the neutron source reactor JRR-3 at Japan Atomic Energy Agency. The spectrometer is suitable for dynamics measurements in the energy range of -1 meV ≲ ℏω ≲ 7 meV, catering to a broad array of research fields in physics and material science. HODACA combines 24 detectors and 132 pieces of analyzer crystals and has an estimated measurement efficiency that is 70 times greater than the existing conventional triple-axis spectrometer at the C1-1 beam port. The concept, design, specification, and results of commissioning experiments are described.
