Applied Superconductivity Conference, 5th, Annapolis, Md., May 1-3, 1972, Proceedings.

Recently developed practical applications of superconductivity are described in papers dealing with transportation and propulsion, power generation, power transmission, special-purpose magnets, superconducting materials, Josephson junctions, and microwave systems. Important topics considered include tracked magnetic-cushion vehicles, electrical machines, cryogenic underground power transmission systems, magnets for fusion reactors and particle accelerators, thin-film superconductors, effects of the structural characteristics of materials on transition temperatures, frequency measurement with Josephson devices, and superconducting scientific instruments. Sensitivity of Josephson-effect millimeter-wave radiometer

The noise temperature and the minimum detectable temperature of a Josephson junction in video detection of microwave and millimeter-wave radiation has been calculated. We use the well-known method based on a Fokker-Planck equation. The noise temperature can be very close to ambient temperature. Because its predetection bandwidth is very wide, a Josephson-effect radio telescope receiver can have a minimum detectable temperature better than that of a traveling-wave maser.

Anomalous superconductivity in twisted MoTe 2 nanojunctions

Introducing superconductivity in topological materials can lead to innovative electronic phases and device functionalities. Here, we present a unique strategy for quantum engineering of superconducting junctions in moiré materials through direct, on-chip, and fully encapsulated 2D crystal growth. We achieve robust and designable superconductivity in Pd-metalized twisted bilayer molybdenum ditelluride (MoTe 2 ) and observe anomalous superconducting effects in high-quality junctions across ~20 moiré cells. Unexpectedly, the junction develops enhanced, instead of weakened, superconducting behaviors, exhibiting fluctuations to a higher critical magnetic field compared to its adjacent Pd 7 MoTe 2 superconductor. In addition, the critical current further exhibits a notable V-shaped minimum at zero magnetic field. These features are unexpected in conventional Josephson junctions and absent in junctions of natural bilayer MoTe 2 created using the same approach. We discuss implications of these observations, including the possible formation of mixed even- and odd-parity superconductivity at the moiré junctions. Our results also demonstrate a pathway to engineer and investigate superconductivity in fractional Chern insulators.

Josephson currents in neutron stars

We demonstrate that the interface between S-wave and P-wave paired superfluids in neutron stars induces a neutron supercurrent, a charge-neutral analog of the Josephson junction effect in electronic superconductors. The proton supercurrent entrainment by the neutron superfluid generates, in addition to the neutral supercurrent, a charged current across the interface. Beyond this stationary effect, the motion of the neutron vortex lines responding to secular changes in the neutron star’s rotation rate induces a time-dependent oscillating Josephson current across this interface when proton flux tubes are dragged along with them. We show that such motion produces radiation from the interface once clusters of proton flux tubes intersect the interface. The power of radiation exceeds by orders of magnitude the Ohmic dissipation of currents in neutron stars. As a result, this effect appears to be phenomenologically significant enough to heat the star and alter its cooling rate during the photon cooling era.

A multilayered approach to superconducting tunnel junction x ray detectors

'First generation' superconducting tunnel junction X-ray detectors (characterized by a single tunnel junction in direct contact with its substrate, with totally external amplification) remain more than an order of magnitude away from their theoretical energy resolutions which are in the order of eV's. The difficulties that first generation devices are encountering are being attacked by a 'second generation' of superconducting X-ray detector designs including quasiparticle trapping configurations and Josephson junction arrays. A second generation design concept, the multilayered superconducting tunnel junction X-ray detector, consisting of tens to hundreds of tunnel junctions stacked on top of one another (a superlattice), is presented. Some of the possibilities of this engineered materials approach include the tuning of phonon transmission characteristics of the material, suppression of parasitic quasiparticle trapping and intrinsic amplification.

Synchronous detection of cosmic rays and correlated errors in superconducting qubit arrays

Quantum information processing at scale will require sufficiently stable and long-lived qubits, likely enabled by error-correction codes. Several recent superconducting-qubit experiments, however, reported observing intermittent spatiotemporally correlated errors that would be problematic for conventional codes, with ionizing radiation being a likely cause. Here, we directly measured the cosmic-ray contribution to spatiotemporally correlated qubit errors. We accomplished this by synchronously monitoring cosmic-ray detectors and qubit energy-relaxation dynamics of 10 transmon qubits distributed across a 5 × 5 × 0.35 mm 3 silicon chip. Cosmic rays caused correlated errors at a rate of $1/\left(592\begin{array}{c}+48\\ -41\end{array}\,{\rm{s}}\right)$, accounting for 17.1 ± 1.3% of all such events. Our qubits responded to essentially all of the cosmic rays and their secondary particles incident on the chip, consistent with the independently measured arrival flux. Moreover, we observed that the landscape of the superconducting gap in proximity to the Josephson junctions dramatically impacts the qubit response to cosmic rays. Given the practical difficulties associated with shielding cosmic rays, our results indicate the importance of radiation hardening—for example, superconducting gap engineering—to the realization of robust quantum error correction.

Non-Markovian relaxation spectroscopy of fluxonium qubits

Recent studies have shown that parasitic two-level systems (TLS) in superconducting qubits, which are a leading source of decoherence, can have relaxation times longer than the qubits themselves. However, the standard techniques used to characterize qubit relaxation is only valid for measuring T 1 under the Born-Markov approximation and could mask environmental memory effects in practice. Here, we introduce two-timescale relaxometry, a technique to probe the qubit and environment relaxation simultaneously and efficiently. We apply it to high-coherence fluxonium qubits over a frequency range of 0.1-0.4 GHz, and reveal a discrete spectrum of TLS with millisecond lifetimes. Our analysis of the spectrum is consistent with a random distribution of TLS in the aluminum oxide tunnel barrier of the Josephson junction chain of the fluxonium, with a spectral and volumetric density and average electric dipole similar to previous TLS studies at much higher frequencies. Our study suggests that investigating and mitigating TLS in the junction chain is crucial to the development of various types of noise-protected qubits in circuit QED.

Millisecond lifetimes and coherence times in 2D transmon qubits

Materials improvement is a powerful approach to reducing loss and decoherence in superconducting qubits, because such improvements can be readily translated to large-scale processors. Recent work improved transmon coherence by using tantalum as a base layer and sapphire as a substrate. The losses in these devices are dominated by two-level systems with comparable contributions from both the surface and bulk dielectrics, indicating that both must be tackled to achieve substantial improvements in the state of the art. Here we show that replacing the substrate with high-resistivity silicon markedly decreases the bulk substrate loss, enabling 2D transmons with time-averaged quality factors (Q avg ) of 9.7 × 10 6 across 45 qubits. For our best qubit, we achieve a Q avg of 1.5 × 10 7 , reaching a maximum Q of 2.5 × 10 7 , corresponding to a lifetime (T 1 ) up to 1.68 ms. This low loss also allows us to observe decoherence effects related to the Josephson junction, and we use an improved, low-contamination junction deposition to achieve Hahn echo coherence times (T 2E ) exceeding T 1 . We achieve these materials improvements without any modifications to the qubit architecture, allowing us to readily incorporate standard quantum control gates. Here, we demonstrate single-qubit gates with 99.994% fidelity. The tantalum-on-silicon platform comprises a simple material stack that can potentially be fabricated at the wafer scale and therefore can be readily translated to large-scale quantum processors.

Integrating magnetic Co-nanopillars in a NbN-based VAN thin film as a multifunctional hybrid metamaterial

NbN thin films are considered as a promising alternative candidate to conventional Al superconducting electrodes for Josephson junction devices, superconducting qubits and quantum logic circuits. Herein, by co-growing ferromagnetic Co with superconducting NbN, self-assembled NbN–Co vertically aligned nanocomposite (VAN) thin films have been successfully deposited on a MgO substrates, with NbN in its cubic superconducting phase. The obtained VAN metamaterials exhibit epitaxial growth of NbN with uniformly dispersed Co nanoplates. Further physical property characterization reveals that the NbN–Co VAN presents ferromagnet properties with strong out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy and optical anisotropy. This hybrid metamaterial system could find future applications in superconducting spintronic devices and quantum computing devices.

Radiatively cooled quantum microwave amplifiers

Superconducting microwave amplifiers are essential for sensitive signal readout in superconducting quantum processors. Typically based on Josephson junctions, these amplifiers require operation at milli-Kelvin temperatures to achieve quantum-limited performance. Here, we demonstrate a quantum microwave amplifier that employs radiative cooling to operate at elevated temperatures and maintain near quantum-limited added noise. This kinetic-inductance-based parametric amplifier, patterned from a single layer of relatively high-Tc NbN thin film, maintains a high gain and meanwhile enables low added noise of 1.3 quanta when operated at 1.5 K. Remarkably, this represents only a 0.2 quanta increase compared to the performance at a base temperature of 0.1 K. Based on our findings, we also discuss the practicality of such an operating scheme for various quantum applications. By uplifting the parametric amplifiers from the mixing chamber without compromising readout efficiency, this work represents an important step toward more scalable microwave quantum technologies.

Superconducting (Ba,K)Fe 2 As 2 epitaxial films on single and bicrystal SrTiO 3 substrates

The realization of single crystal and bicrystal films of superconducting materials is of great interest because they allow the investigation of the intragrain performance as well as the understanding of potential limitations in the grain boundary transparency. For many years, the realization of a high-quality (Ba,K)Fe 2 As 2 film has been challenging. Here, the realization of (Ba,K)Fe 2 As 2 epitaxial thin films on single crystal SrTiO 3 (001) and [001]-tilt-type SrTiO 3 bicrystal substrates with high superconducting properties is demonstrated. The epitaxial growth of (Ba,K)Fe 2 As 2 was enabled by implementing an undoped BaFe 2 As 2 buffer layer between the SrTiO 3 substrate and (Ba,K)Fe 2 As 2 film. The film exhibits a high T c of 38.0 K and an extremely high J c of 14.3 MA/cm 2 at 4.2 K. Artificial grain boundaries of (Ba,K)Fe 2 As 2 were also successfully achieved on bicrystals with misorientation angles up to 36.8° by the same preparation methods. The artificial grain boundaries exhibited an identical T c of 38.0 K and an excellent transfer of the grain orientation from the bicrystal substrates with high crystallinity comparable to that of the high-quality Ba(Fe,Co) 2 As 2 films. Furthermore, this enables the investigation of the intrinsic (Ba,K)Fe 2 As 2 grain boundary nature, which will clarify its potential for superconducting applications, like Josephson junctions, wires, and magnets.

Implementation of scalable suspended superinductors

Superinductors have become a crucial component in the superconducting circuit toolbox, playing a key role in the development of more robust qubits. Enhancing the performance of these devices can be achieved by suspending the superinductors from the substrate, thereby reducing stray capacitance. Here, we present a fabrication framework for constructing superconducting circuits with suspended superinductors in planar architectures. To validate the effectiveness of this process, we systematically characterize both resonators and qubits with suspended arrays of Josephson junctions, ultimately confirming the high quality of the superinductive elements. In addition, this process is broadly compatible with other types of superinductors and circuit designs. Furthermore, our results not only pave the way for scalable superconducting architectures utilizing superinductors but also provide the primitive for future investigation of loss mechanisms associated with the device substrate.

Analog-to-digital converter based on voltage-controlled superconducting devices

The increasing demand for cryogenic electronics in superconducting and quantum computing systems calls for ultra-energy-efficient data conversion architectures that remain functional at deep cryogenic temperatures. Here, in this work, we present the first design of a voltage-controlled superconducting flash analog-to-digital converter (ADC) based on a voltage-controlled quantum-enhanced Josephson junction field-effect transistor (JJFET). Exploiting its strong gate tunability and transistor-like behavior, the JJFET offers a scalable alternative to conventional current-controlled superconducting devices while aligning naturally with CMOS-style design methodologies. Building on our previously developed Verilog-A compact model calibrated to experimental data, we design and simulate a three-bit JJFET-based flash ADC targeted for integration within cryogenic control and readout circuitry in quantum computing. The core comparator block is realized through careful bias current selection and augmented with a three-terminal nanocryotron to precisely define reference voltages. Cascaded JJFET comparators ensure robust voltage gain, cascadability, and logic-level restoration across stages. Simulation results demonstrate accurate quantization behavior with ultra-low power dissipation, underscoring the feasibility of voltage-driven superconducting mixed-signal circuits. This work establishes a critical step toward unifying superconducting logic and data conversion, paving the way for scalable cryogenic architectures in quantum–classical co-processors, low-power artificial intelligence accelerators, and next-generation energy-constrained computing platforms.

Magneto-optical study of Nb thin films for superconducting qubits

Abstract Among the recognized sources of decoherence in superconducting qubits, the spatial inhomogeneity of the superconducting state and the possible presence of magnetic-flux vortices remain comparatively underexplored. Niobium is commonly used as a structural material in transmon qubits that host Josephson junctions, and excess dissipation anywhere in the transmon can become a bottleneck that limits overall quantum performance. The metal/substrate interfacial layer may simultaneously host pair-breaking loss channels (e.g. two-level systems) and control thermal transport, thereby affecting dissipation and temperature stability. Here, we use quantitative magneto-optical imaging of the magnetic-flux distribution to characterize the homogeneity of the superconducting state and the critical current density, j c , in niobium films fabricated under different sputtering conditions. The imaging reveals distinct flux-penetration regimes, ranging from a nearly ideal Bean critical state to strongly nonuniform thermo-magnetic dendritic avalanches. By fitting the measured magnetic-induction profiles, we extract j c and try to correlate it with film physical properties and with measured qubit internal quality factors. Our results indicate that the Nb/Si interlayer can be a significant contributor to decoherence and should be considered an important factor that must be optimized.

Transport signatures of phase fluctuations in superconducting qubits

Abstract Josephson junctions supply the nonlinear inductance element in superconducting qubits. In the widely used transmon configuration, where the junction is shunted by a large capacitor, the low charging energy minimizes the sensitivity of the qubit to charge noise while maintaining the necessary anharmonicity to qubit states. We report here low-frequency transport measurements on small standalone junctions and identically fabricated capacitively-shunted junctions that show two distinct features normally attributed to small capacitance junctions near zero bias: reduced switching currents and prominent finite resistance associated with phase diffusion in the current–voltage characteristic. Our transport data reveals the existence of phase fluctuations in transmons arising from intrinsic junction capacitance.

Tuning of electronic properties in highly lattice-mismatched epitaxial SmN

Here, we establish the relationship between native N vacancies, introduced through varying growth parameters, and the structural and transport properties in SmN thin films grown via molecular beam epitaxy grown on MgO(001). The varying levels of N vacancies introduced by varying the ratio of Sm to N atoms during deposition creates excess carriers that radically transform the electrical behavior of the film, over a range of five orders of magnitude, from highly resistive to highly conductive, and unlocking a phase transition evidenced by the presence of a ferromagnetic feature in resistivity. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results show that this effect is much less pronounced when varying the available nitrogen species. These samples retain a highly crystal quality despite being grown on a substrate with a lattice mismatch of 20%, alleviating the strain by forming a highly strained SmO oxide layer. The integration between SmN and several transition metal nitride compounds has the potential to unlock new architectures for Josephson junction devices.

Performance analysis of superconductor-constriction-superconductor transmon qubits

Here, this work presents a computational analysis of a superconducting transmon qubit design, in which the superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) Josephson junction is replaced by a coplanar, superconductor-constriction-superconductor (ScS) nanobridge junction. Within the scope of Ginzburg-Landau theory, we find that the nanobridge ScS transmon has an improved charge dispersion compared to the SIS transmon, with a tradeoff of smaller anharmonicity. These calculations provide a framework for estimating the superconductor material properties and junction dimensions compatible with gigahertz frequency ScS transmon operation.

Nonlinear inductive response of pinned superconducting vortices in artificial pinning sites

Using the time dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations, we simulate the inductive responses of a variety of thin-film systems containing patterned antidots with different sizes and shapes. The results for all shapes show that the kinetic inductance diverges as the applied current approaches a critical current that is below the BCS depairing current. In conclusion, exploiting the similarity of the observed current-voltage behavior to that of Josephson junctions, we obtain an empirical equation that well fits the inductivity curve as a function of the applied current.
