High aspect ratio organic light-emitting diodes

Reliability is particularly challenging for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) used in solid-state lighting applications, because OLED lifetime is inversely proportional to luminance, and most lighting applications demand high luminance. Here we introduce a strategy to overcome this tradeoff by constructing OLEDs on a substrate with sub-mm, high aspect ratio surface texture. By creating more active OLED area per unit lighting panel area, the device current density required to generate a given panel luminance decreases. We validate this approach for fluorescent and phosphorescent OLEDs, demonstrating good thickness uniformity on corrugated substrates with area enhancement factors up to 1.4x using a standard thermal evaporator. Relative to planar controls at the same panel current density, the high aspect ratio devices achieve a 2.7-fold increase in operating lifetime and up to a 40% increase in external light extraction efficiency, indicating that this approach offers a powerful pathway to improve the efficiency and lifetime of OLED lighting.

High Aspect Ratio OLEDs

Long-term reliability is especially challenging for organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) used in solid-state lighting applications because OLED lifetime is inversely proportional to luminance, and most lighting applications demand high luminance. This project explored a new strategy to overcome this tradeoff by constructing OLEDs on a substrate with sub-mm, high aspect ratio surface texture. By creating more active OLED area per unit lighting panel area, the device current density required to generate a given panel luminance decreases. We validated this approach for both fluorescent and phosphorescent OLEDs, demonstrating good thickness uniformity on corrugated substrates with area enhancement factors up to 1.4x using a standard thermal evaporator. Relative to planar controls at the same panel current density, the high aspect ratio devices achieve a 2.7-fold increase in operating lifetime and up to a 40% increase in external light extraction efficiency. Experiments carried out on a pilot-line OLED manufacturing system demonstrated good coating uniformity, indicating that this approach has the potential to be implemented at scale and therefore offers a powerful pathway to improve the efficiency and lifetime of OLED lighting.

Evidence for accelerated aging in mammary epithelia of women carrying germline BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations

During aging in the human mammary gland, luminal epithelial cells lose lineage fidelity by expressing markers normally expressed in myoepithelial cells. We hypothesize that loss of lineage fidelity is a general manifestation of epithelia that are susceptible to cancer initiation. In the present study, we show that histologically normal breast tissue from younger women who are susceptible to breast cancer, as a result of harboring a germline mutation in BRCA1, BRCA2 or PALB2 genes, exhibits hallmarks of accelerated aging. These include proportionately increased luminal epithelial cells that acquired myoepithelial markers, decreased proportions of myoepithelial cells and a basal differentiation bias or failure of differentiation of cKit + progenitors. High-risk luminal and myoepithelial cells are transcriptionally enriched for genes of the opposite lineage, inflammatory- and cancer-related pathways. We have identified breast-aging hallmarks that reflect a convergent biology of cancer susceptibility, regardless of the specific underlying genetic or age-dependent risk or the associated breast cancer subtype.

eROSITA Final Equatorial-Depth Survey (eFEDS) eFEDS X-ray view of WERGS radio galaxies selected by the Subaru/HSC and VLA/FIRST survey

We constructed the eROSITA X-ray catalog of radio galaxies discovered by the WERGS survey, made by cross-matching the wide area Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) optical survey and VLA/FIRST 1.4 GHz radio survey. We report finding 393 eROSITA detected radio galaxies in the 0.5-2 keV band in the eFEDS field covering 140 deg 2 . Thanks to the wide and medium depth eFEDS X-ray survey down to f 0.5 - 2 keV = 6.5 × 10 -15 erg s -1 cm -2 , the sample contains the rare and most X-ray luminous radio galaxies above the knee of the X-ray luminosity function, spanning 44 < log(L 0.5-2 keV (abs, corr) /erg s -1 ) < 46.5 at 1 < z < 4. The sample also contains the sources around and below the knee for the sources 41 < log(L 0.5-2 keV (abs, corr) /erg s -1 ) < 45 at z < 1. Based on the X-ray properties obtained by the spectral fitting, 37 sources show obscured active galactic nucleus (AGN) signatures with log(N H /cm -2 ) > 22. These obscured and radio AGN reside in 0.4 < z < 3.2, indicating that they are obscured counterparts of the radio-loud quasar, which were missed in the previous optical quasar surveys. By combining radio and X-ray luminosities, we also investigated the jet production efficiency η jet = η rad P jet /L AGN,bol by utilizing the jet power of P jet . We find that there are 14 sources with extremely high jet production efficiency at η jet ≈ 1. This high η jet value might be a result of the decreased radiation efficiency of η rad < 0.1, due to the low accretion rate for those sources, and/or of the boosting due to the decline of L AGN,bol by a factor of 10-100 by keeping P jet constant in the previous Myr, indicating the experience of the AGN feedback. Finally, inferring the BH masses from the stellar mass, we find that X-ray luminous sources show the excess of the radio emission with respect to the value estimated from the fundamental plane. This radio emission excess cannot be explained by the Doppler boosting alone, and therefore the disk–jet connection of X-ray luminous eFEDS-WERGS is fundamentally different from the conventional fundamental plane which mainly covers the low-accretion regime.

The distribution of neutral hydrogen in the colour–magnitude plane of galaxies

ABSTRACT We present the conditional H i (neutral hydrogen) mass function (HIMF) conditioned on observed optical properties, Mr (r-band absolute magnitude), and Cur (u − r colour), for a sample of 7709 galaxies from Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA (40 per cent data release – α.40) which overlaps with a common volume in SDSS DR7. Based on the conditional HIMF, we find that the luminous red, luminous blue, and faint blue populations dominate the total HIMF at the high-mass end, knee, and the low-mass end, respectively. We use the conditional HIMF to derive the underlying distribution function of ΩH i (H i density parameter), p(ΩH i), in the colour–magnitude plane of galaxies. The distribution, p(ΩH i), peaks in the blue cloud at $\mathit{ M_{{r}}}^{\text{max}}=-19.25, \mathit{ C_{{ur}}}^{\text{max}}=1.44$ but is skewed. It has a long tail towards faint blue galaxies, and luminous red galaxies. We argue that p(ΩH i) can be used to reveal the underlying relation between cold gas, stellar mass, and the star formation rate in an unbiased way, that is, the derived relation does not suffer from survey or sample selection.

Compartmental Control of UDP-Araf Supply: Golgi Lumen UDP-Arabinopyranose Mutase Depletes Plant Cell Wall Araf Linkages

L-Arabinofuranose (Araf) is a major constituent of plant cell wall polysaccharides. UDP-Araf is generated from UDP-L-arabinopyranose (UDP-Arap) by a UDP-Arap mutase (UAM) on the cytosolic face of the Golgi and then imported into the Golgi lumen for utilization by arabinosyltransferases (AraTs). Yet, a substantial fraction of UDP-Arap is synthesized in the Golgi lumen by the UDP-xylose 4-epimerase (UXE), creating a topological paradox where luminal UDP-Arap must be exported to the cytosol for conversion to UDP-Araf by UAM and then re-imported into the Golgi lumen. To test the functional significance of this compartmentation, we mislocalized Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) UAM1 to the Golgi lumen by fusing it to the UXE1 transmembrane domain. The fusion protein was present in the Golgi, and protease-protection assays on microsomes supported its luminal orientation. In wild-type and uam1 plants, Golgi-targeted UAM1 reduced total cell wall Arabinose without consistent changes in other monosaccharides. Linkage analyses showed that this decrease reflects selective loss of Araf residues, whereas Arap remain largely unchanged, consistent with reduced UDP-Araf availability for luminal AraTs. Under salt stress, expression of Golgi-targeted UAM1 in uam1 caused root-growth inhibition and maturation-zone swelling that exogenous L-Ara failed to rescue. These results support a hypothesis that the strong thermodynamic bias of the UAM reaction toward UDP-Arap requires spatial separation of UDP-Arap production from UDP-Araf formation to sustain UDP-Araf flux into Golgi arabinosylation and avoid futile intraluminal back-conversion.

Hybrid Down-Converting Structures for Solid State Lighting

Achieving higher luminous efficacy in phosphor converted light emitting diodes (pcLED) requires breakthroughs in down-converting materials that provide high conversion efficiency, tunable narrow bandwidth emission, and temperature/chemical stability. While conventional bulk phosphors are currently the dominant down-converters used in high power solid-state lighting (SSL) applications, their performance is limited by intrinsic properties such as high scattering cross-sections and large emission bandwidth. On the other hand, conventional luminescent nanocrystals (e.g, quantum dots or QDs) have high self-absorption and poor thermal and chemical stability for HB LEDs. Ultimately, these materials will enable a new generation of solid state lighting devices with high luminous efficacies, high color and thermal stability, and with spectral efficiency near the theoretical maximum luminous efficacy of radiation (LER), as a result of their color tunability and narrow bandwidths (FWHM < 30nm).

Efficient, Color-Stable, and Long-Lived White Organic Light-Emitting Diodes Utilizing Phosphorescent Molecular Aggregates

Highly efficient and stable single-stack hybrid white organic light-emitting diode (WOLED) devices are developed using two emissive layers: one with amber-colored phosphorescent molecular-aggregate emission from the Pd(II) complex, Pd(II) 7-(3-(pyridine-2-yl-κN)phenoxy-κC)(benzo-κC)([c]benzo[4,5]imidazo-κN)[1,2-a][1,5]naphthyridine, Pd3O8-Py5, and the other with blue fluorescence emission. Here, an optimized device structure achieves high color stability under various current densities, an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 45.5%, a power efficiency of 97.4 Lm W -1 , and an estimated LT 95 (operational time to 95% of the initial luminance) of 50 744 h at an initial luminance of 1000 cd m -2 .

The environmental dependence of the stellar mass of active galactic nucleus host galaxies and dependence of the clustering properties of active galactic nucleus host galaxies on the stellar mass

Abstract We used two volume‐limited active galactic nucleus (AGN) host galaxy samples constructed by Deng & Wen (2020, RMxAA , 56, 87), and explored the environmental dependence of the stellar mass of AGN host galaxies. In the luminous volume‐limited AGN host galaxy sample, the stellar mass of AGN host galaxies apparently depends on local environments: high mass AGN host galaxies exist preferentially in the dense regions of the universe, while low mass AGN host galaxies are located preferentially in low density regions. But in the faint volume‐limited AGN host galaxy sample, this dependence is fairly weak. We also examined the dependence of the clustering properties of AGN host galaxies on the stellar mass by cluster analysis, and found that in the luminous volume‐limited AGN host galaxy sample, low mass AGN host galaxies preferentially form isolated galaxies, close pairs, and small groups, while high mass AGN host galaxies preferentially inhabit the dense groups and clusters. A substantial dependence of the clustering properties of AGN host galaxies on the stellar mass is also observed in the faint volume‐limited AGN host galaxy sample, which is inconsistent with the environmental dependence of the stellar mass of AGN host galaxies in the faint volume‐limited AGN host galaxy sample. This is likely due to the galaxy number of the faint volume‐limited AGN host galaxy sample being too small to ensure an ideal statistical analysis.

Visualization of Hemispherical Post‐Detonation Fireball Internal Structures

Hemispherical charges are initiated above a transparent plate in a half‐plane configuration, allowing optical access to the internal regions of the luminous fireball. High‐speed visualization enables characterization of the internal luminous structure, showing clearly the bright shell and dark core regions. Spectroscopic and pyrometric diagnostics are applied to these flows, generating quantitative information on the spatial distribution of temperature inside the fireball. Both cased and uncased charges can be examined using this methodology, and several different high explosives are tested. This approach can be useful in validation of detailed explosive fireball models. Initial comparisons with such models are presented.

Comparison of two small bowel distending agents for enterography in pediatric small bowel imaging

Objective: To evaluate the ability of pediatric patients with known or suspected inflammatory bowel disease to ingest a new oral distending agent at CT or MR enterography (CTE/MRE), and to determine the impact on small bowel (SB) distension and diagnostic confidence. Materials and methods: The study design is that of retrospective review of pediatric patients who underwent CTE or MRE from January 2014 to June 2016. Patients ingested low-concentration barium suspension or flavored beverage containing sorbitol and mannitol. The need for nasogastric tube (NGT) administration, amount ingested, emesis, distal extent of contrast, SB distension, terminal ileum (TI) transverse dimension, and diagnostic confidence in TI disease were assessed. Three radiologists each blindly reviewed a subset of the studies. Results: Of the total 591 scans in 504 patients, 316 scans used low-concentration barium suspension and 275 scans flavored beverage. Nearly all consumed the entire amount (97% vs. 96%). Low-concentration barium suspension exams required NGT more often (7% [23/316] vs. 1% [3/275]; p < 0.0003), and tended to have more emesis (3% [9/316] vs. 1% [3/275]; p = 0.13). Diagnostic confidence score was nearly identical (p = 0.94). Qualitative and quantitative analyses showed no difference in SB distension, except for distension of mid-ileum (flavored beverage > low-concentration barium suspension; p = 0.02). Flavored beverage exams demonstrated a slight increase in distal extent of luminal distension (p = 0.02). Conclusions: A new flavored beverage distends small bowel as well as low-concentration barium suspension, with decreased requirement for NGT insertion and improved distal extent of luminal distension, and without any decrease in diagnostic confidence in the presence or the absence of TI disease.

Iatrogenic celiac and hepatic artery dissections during intra-arterial regional tumor therapies: a 16-year retrospective review

Purpose: To identify the incidence and outcomes of iatrogenic celiac and hepatic artery dissections during transarterial therapies, including bland embolization, chemoembolization, radioembolization (TARE), and pre-TARE scintigraphic mapping. Methods: The institution’s quality assessment database, electronic medical record, and picture archiving and communication system were reviewed to identify all patients who underwent transarterial locoregional therapy from 1/2001 to 7/2017 and to determine the incidence of iatrogenic dissection, to assess patency of the arteries after dissection, and to assess the ability to complete therapy. Results: 2253 patients underwent 3776 transarterial hepatic oncology procedures. Among 3776 procedures, 40 (1.1%) were associated with dissection of the visceral vasculature, affecting 39 patients (1.7%). The incidence of flow-limiting dissections was 0.3% (13/3776) and non-flow-limiting dissections was 0.7% (27/3776). After dissection, 68% (27/40) of treatments were completed the same day. Among the 13 aborted treatments, 8 (62%) were completed on a subsequent encounter. Follow-up imaging was obtained in 26 of 40 cases at median time of 63 days. Complete resolution of the dissection was seen in 15/26 cases (58%), near complete resolution (< 30% luminal narrowing) in 3/26 (12%), unchanged appearance of a non-flow-limiting dissection in 4/26 (15%), progressive luminal narrowing in 3/26 (12%), and complete occlusion in 1/26 (4%). Conclusion: Iatrogenic dissections of visceral arteries rarely occur during tumor embolization procedures. 35/39 (90%) of patients underwent successful treatment despite the dissection.

Color optimization of red OLEDs via periodic and gradient deposition rate of fluorescent dopants

We have investigated a method to enhance the light emission efficiency and color tuning for mixture of dyes with varying the growth parameters, during Alq{sub 3}:Nile Red deposition. We used solvent bath and green laser (532 nm) for improvement of the performance of devices. This paper presents two kind of evaporation method, periodic and gradient. We observed that periodic emission layers can greatly improve the device performances such as electroluminescence, chromaticity coordinates, luminance, and reduced the turn on voltage. The periodic 3 structure with evaporation rate of (0.1 → 3 → 2 → 3 → 2 → 0.1 A°/s) has a luminance of 3000 cd/m{sup 2} and maximum efficiency of 1.8 cd/A at 18 V which are the highest values among devices.

The effect of lighting environment on task performance in buildings – A review

The effects of indoor environmental conditions on human health, satisfaction, and performance have been the focal point of research for decades. This paper reviews and summarizes the impact of lighting environment on task performance, specifically for the built environment audience. Existing studies included a variety of performance tests on cognitive performance and perception, visual acuity and reaction, memory, reasoning, and labor productivity. Illuminance, luminance ratio and correlated color temperature were found to affect performance in different ways, reflecting the impact of experimental techniques, conditions, performance evaluation methods used and data analysis methods. These were reviewed and categorized, with discussion on limitations related to sample size, modeling approach, carryover effects and other factors affecting individual differences in performance, with recommendations for future improvement. Although no universal conclusions can be made, in general, task performance seems to improve with higher illuminances, contrast ratios in the range of 7–11:1 (while always making sure that glare will not occur in the space) and higher correlated color temperature, while spectral tuning in the red or blue wavelengths has also shown positive effects. To obtain more generic evidence, future studies should be more consistent in terms of experimental procedures and overall light conditions, and also consider the effects of vertical illuminance, daylight provision/control, and outside views on task performance. Finally, studying performance with multi-factorial designs in a human-centered optimized manner (such as deploying variable lighting scenarios optimized for various tasks) can lead to deeper understanding of lighting effects on task performance, and ultimately to improved lighting design and operation in buildings overall.

Simulating combustion of a seven-component surrogate for a gasoline/ethanol blend including soot formation and comparison with experiments

Combustion of a seven-component surrogate for a research grade 87 octane gasoline mixed with 10% ethanol is investigated experimentally and numerically from the perspective of an isolated droplet burning under conditions that promote one-dimensional gas transport. The numerical analysis included a kinetic mechanism comprised of 398 species and 24,814 reactions and a soot model that accounted for nucleation, surface growth, coalescence/aggregation of soot particles, and luminous flame radiation. Measurements of droplet and flame diameters were made for an initial droplet diameter (D o ) of approximately 0.63 mm. The simulations agreed well with the measurements including the location of the soot shell. Preferential vaporization was revealed by simulations of the liquid concentrations in the droplet. Predicted peak soot volume fractions coincided with temperatures between 1300 K and 1400 K as a soot inception temperature. Simulations were also carried out for D o between 0.25 mm and 5 mm to explore the effect of radiation and D o on burning. Below 0.25 mm radiation was negligible and burning rates and flame temperatures converged to a single value. Increasing D o up to 1.8 mm lowered the burning rate with luminous radiation having a strong effect. When radiation was entirely removed from the model the burning rate was nearly constant. Above D o = 2 mm droplets extinguished almost immediately after ignition. The flame temperature decreased with increasing D o while it increased when radiation was omitted. As a result, the simulations show that soot precursors including polyaromatic hydrocarbons were concentrated around the soot shell.

Vascular endothelial and smooth muscle cell galvanotactic response and differential migratory behavior

Chronic disease or injury of the vasculature impairs the functionality of vascular wall cells particularly in their ability to migrate and repair vascular surfaces. Under pathologic conditions, vascular endothelial cells (ECs) lose their non-thrombogenic properties and decrease their motility. Alternatively, vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs) may increase motility and proliferation, leading to blood vessel luminal invasion. Current therapies to prevent subsequent blood vessel occlusion commonly mechanically injure vascular cells leading to endothelial denudation and smooth muscle cell luminal migration. Due to this dichotomous migratory behavior, a need exists for modulating vascular cell growth and migration in a more targeted manner. Here, we examine the efficacy of utilizing small direct current electric fields to influence vascular cell-specific migration (“galvanotaxis”). We designed, fabricated, and implemented an in vitro chamber for tracking vascular cell migration direction, distance, and displacement under galvanotactic influence of varying magnitude. Our results indicate that vascular ECs and SMCs have differing responses to galvanotaxis; ECs exhibit a positive correlation of anodal migration while SMCs exhibit minimal change in directional migration in relation to the electric field direction. SMCs exhibit less motility response (i.e. distance traveled in 4 h) compared to ECs, but SMCs show a significantly higher motility at low electric potentials (80 mV/cm). With further investigation and translation, galvanotaxis may be an effective solution for modulation of vascular cell-specific migration, leading to enhanced endothelialization, with coordinate reduced smooth muscle in-migration.

Solid-State Lighting Using Side-by-Side White Phosphorescent Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

White organic light-emitting diodes (WOLEDs) have become increasingly popular for use in solid-state illumination, where diffuse, large area light sources that achieve a high color rendering index and luminous power efficiency are desirable. Color-tunable emission, where the light source combines emission from multiple, separately addressed color elements, is conveniently provided by WOLEDs for the purpose of adapting the lighting source to a particular illumination requirement. In this work, we demonstrate a method for side-by-side positioning of monochromatic blue and yellow phosphorescent OLED stripes that are combined to create tunable white light, using a high resolution mechanical peel-off patterning method. We achieve a peak luminous power efficiency of 17.1 ± 0.3 lm W –1 and an external quantum efficiency of 11.8 ± 0.2% and demonstrate color tunability of the 1960 Commission Internationale d’Eclairage chromaticity coordinates from (u,v) = (0.33,0.36) to (0.12,0.32). This corresponds to a tuning rnge of the color rendering index from 74 ± 1 to 86 ± 1 and the correlated color temperature from 2000 to 8000 ± 500 K. Here, due to the nondestructive nature of the peel-off technique, patterned devices exhibit a lifetime comparable to conventional, shadow mask-patterned devices.
