Development, fabrication and testing of a magnetically connected plastic vacuum probe surface sampler

The sampler utilizes permanent magnets and soft metal pole pieces to connect the cone/filter assembly to the sampling head and vacuum supply. The cone/filter assembly is packaged in a plastic container and presterilized so that the need for any human contact during the sampling procedure is completely eliminated. Microbiological tests have demonstrated that the sampling efficiency is not affected by the magnetic coupling apparatus and that the probe appears to function as efficiently as the conventional plastic and Sandia vacuum probes.

Regulated dc-to-dc converter for voltage step-up or step-down with input-output isolation

A closed loop regulated dc-to-dc converter employing an unregulated two winding inductive energy storage converter is provided by using a magnetically coupled multivibrator acting as duty cycle generator to drive the converter. The multivibrator is comprised of two transistor switches and a saturable transformer. The output of the converter is compared with a reference in a comparator which transmits a binary zero until the output exceeds the reference. When the output exceeds the reference, the binary output of the comparator drives transistor switches to turn the multivibrator off. The multivibrator is unbalanced so that a predetermined transistor will always turn on first when the binary feedback signal becomes zero.

Research on spacecraft electrical power conversion

The steady state characteristics and starting behavior of some widely used self-oscillating magnetically coupled square wave inverters were studied and the development of LC-tuned square wave inverters is reported. An analysis on high amplitude voltage spikes which occur in dc-to-square-wave parallel converters shows the importance of various circuit parameters for inverter design and for the suppression of spikes. A computerized simulation of an inductor energy storage dc-to-dc converter with closed loop regulators and of a preregulating current step-up converter are detailed. Work continued on the computer aided design of two-winding energy storage dc-to-dc converters.

Disk accretion by magnetic neutron stars

A model for disk accretion by a rotating magnetic neutron star is proposed which includes a detailed description of matter flow in the transition region between the disk and the magnetosphere. It is shown that the disk plasma cannot be completely screened from the stellar magnetic field and that the resulting magnetic coupling between the star and the disk exerts a significant torque on the star. On the assumption that the distortion of the residual stellar field lines threading the disk is limited by reconnection, the total accretion torque on the star is calculated. The calculated torque gives period changes in agreement with those observed in the pulsating X-ray sources and provides a natural explanation of why a fast rotator like Her X-1 has a spin-up rate much below the conventional estimate for slow rotators. It is shown that for such fast rotators, fluctuations in the mass-accretion rate can produce fluctuations in the accretion torque about 100 times larger. For sufficiently fast rotators or, equivalently, for sufficiently low accretion rates, the star experiences a braking torque even while accretion continues and without any mass ejection from its vicinity.

Thermal instabilities in magnetically confined plasmas - Solar coronal loops

The thermal stability of confined solar coronal structures ('loops') is investigated, following both normal mode and a new, global instability analysis. It is demonstrated that: (1) normal mode analysis shows modes with size scales comparable to that of loops to be unstable, but to be strongly affected by the loop boundary conditions; (2) a global analysis, based upon variation of the total loop energy losses and gains, yields loop stability conditions for global modes dependent upon the coronal loop heating process, with magnetically coupled heating processes giving marginal stability. The connection between the present analysis and the minimum flux corona of Hearn is also discussed.

Lightweight, Low-Loss dc Transducer

Direct current is measured by lightweight, magnetically coupled transducer that weighs only 4 grams, without actually being wired into circuit under test. Miniature dc transducer has five windings: 2 for ac excitation inputs, 2 for dc control inputs, and 1 for feedback. Wire gages are selected for minimum size and weight. Size and number of turns of dc windings are selected according to dc current range to be measured.

Rotational history of the sun: Spin-down of the interior by circulation currents and fluid instabilities

A number of astronomical observations show that solar-type stars begin the main-sequence stage with surface rotation rates which are much greater than that of the sun. The subsequent decrease in the surface rotation rate is due to the braking torque exerted by magnetically-coupled mass loss (the solar wind). The direct braking action of the solar wind should be confined to the convective envelope so the rotation of the radiative interior remains an open question. After reviewing the relevant astronomical data, we describe how angular momentum could be transported out of the radiative interior by fluid instabilities and estimate the time scales for such transport. This picture is used to construct an evolutionary model of the sun, which predicts the present rotation of the radiative interior. The results of such a model are interpreted in terms of the measured oblateness of the solar surface.

Precision manipulator heating and cooling assembly compatible with sample transfer

A technique is described for the transfer of a UHV sample system to a precision manipulator. It allows direct sample temperature measurement in a broad range of sample temperatures (150-1750 K) and simultaneously retains the benefit of the additional degree of freedom provided by the precision manipulator flip mechanism. The technique is similar to that reported by Crider (1976) but with several modifications. The pump is mounted at the extreme end of the magnetically coupled linear motion feedthrough (to maximize the separation). Samples are mounted on a threaded circular sample holder, transferred to the flip mechanism of the manipulator. The flip mechanism contains a rear electrode assembly and thermocouple, in direct contact with the sample, and a copper plate and a flexible strap are attached to the receiving block (to facilitate sample cooling).

Additional measurements of pre-main-sequence stellar rotation

New rotational-velocity measurements for pre-main-sequence stars in the Taurus-Auriga molecular cloud are reported. Rotational velocities or upper limits of 10 km/s are now available for 90 percent of the T Tauri stars with V less than 14.7 in the catalog of Cohen and Kuhi. Measurements of 'continuum emission' stars, thought to be accreting high-angular-momentum material from a circumstellar disk, show that these objects are not especially rapid rotators. The results confirm earlier findings that angular-momentum loss proceeds very efficiently in the earliest stages of star formation, and suggest that stars older than about one million yr contract to the main sequence at nearly constant angular momentum. The slow rotation of T Tauri stars probably requires substantial angular-momentum loss via a magnetically coupled wind.

A magnetic suspension system with a large angular range

The paper describes a small-scale laboratory system, called the Large-Angle Magnetic Suspension Test Fixture (LAMSTF), constructed at NASA Langley Research Center in order to explore and develop technology required for the magnetic suspension of objects over large ranges of orientation. The LAMSTF hardware comprises five electromagnets in a circular arrangement, each driven from a separate bipolar power amplifier. The suspended element is a cylindrical axially magnetized permanent magnet core, within an aluminum tube. The element, which is 'levitated' by repulsive forces, is stabilized in five degrees-of-freedom, with rotation about the cylinder axis not controlled. The controller accommodates the changes in magnetic coupling between the electromagnets and the suspended element by real-time adaptation of a decoupling matrix. The paper presents performance measurements demonstrating that the major design objective of the 360 deg rotation was accomplished.

Ultrasonic-Transmission Testing Device

Ultrasonic-testing apparatus measures transmission through component under inspection. Includes hand-held ultrasonic transmitter placed on one side of component and ultrasonic receiver placed on other side. However, no need to hold or manually align receiving transducer after initial setup. Transmitter loosely inserted in magnetic assembly on one side, while receiver placed in another magnetic assembly on other side. Magnetic coupling keeps transmitter and receiver assemblies pressed against component and keeps receiver alligned with transmitter as transmitter scans across surface of component. Receiver moved to locations otherwise inaccessible.
