Unified hatch system

Special hatch sealing mechanism design increases safety, reliability, and convenience. Adaptations are possible for oceanographic and high-speed aircraft design, or for any system where quick-opening pressure hatch is required. In normal mode, hatching mechanism is manually operated from either side.

OMV docking simulator

The Boeing Orbital Maneuvering Vehicle (OMV) Docking and Proximity Operation System (DAPOS) was completed. The system constructed involves the use of four separate processors. Appropriate software was developed that drives each of these four processors. The hand controller logic coordinates all the activities in the control station, and communicates with the OMV mathematical model. The state vector generated by the model is in turn transmitted to the control station as well as the POLY 2000 (via the ALCYON host computer) for real time graphics generation. The OMV characteristics are stored in a data file which may be easily updated and modified without disturbing the software, thereby making the system very flexible. The current system supports two types of hand controllers. The system was flown by several volunteers, some of whom are airplane pilots. A user manual is also enclosed.

Thermal Expert System (TEXSYS): Systems automony demonstration project, volume 1. Overview

The Systems Autonomy Demonstration Project (SADP) produced a knowledge-based real-time control system for control and fault detection, isolation, and recovery (FDIR) of a prototype two-phase Space Station Freedom external active thermal control system (EATCS). The Thermal Expert System (TEXSYS) was demonstrated in recent tests to be capable of reliable fault anticipation and detection, as well as ordinary control of the thermal bus. Performance requirements were addressed by adopting a hierarchical symbolic control approach-layering model-based expert system software on a conventional, numerical data acquisition and control system. The model-based reasoning capabilities of TEXSYS were shown to be advantageous over typical rule-based expert systems, particularly for detection of unforeseen faults and sensor failures. Volume 1 gives a project overview and testing highlights. Volume 2 provides detail on the EATCS test bed, test operations, and online test results. Appendix A is a test archive, while Appendix B is a compendium of design and user manuals for the TEXSYS software.

Fiducial Marks for Location of Particles in Aerogel

If an extraterrestrial sample is captured in aerogel as a collection of particles, it is important to be able to consistently locate individual grains when changing instruments or laboratories. We report on a feasibility study for applying fiducial marks to aerogel nondestructively so that the marks can eventually be used with optical, X-ray or other (manual or automated) location techniques.

General chemical kinetics computer program for static and flow reactions, with application to combustion and shock-tube kinetics

A general chemical kinetics program is described for complex, homogeneous ideal-gas reactions in any chemical system. Its main features are flexibility and convenience in treating many different reaction conditions. The program solves numerically the differential equations describing complex reaction in either a static system or one-dimensional inviscid flow. Applications include ignition and combustion, shock wave reactions, and general reactions in a flowing or static system. An implicit numerical solution method is used which works efficiently for the extreme conditions of a very slow or a very fast reaction. The theory is described, and the computer program and users' manual are included.
