Navier-Stokes and Comprehensive Analysis Performance Predictions of the NREL Phase VI Experiment

A vortex lattice code, CAMRAD II, and a Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stoke code, OVERFLOW-D2, were used to predict the aerodynamic performance of a two-bladed horizontal axis wind turbine. All computations were compared with experimental data that was collected at the NASA Ames Research Center 80- by 120-Foot Wind Tunnel. Computations were performed for both axial as well as yawed operating conditions. Various stall delay models and dynamics stall models were used by the CAMRAD II code. Comparisons between the experimental data and computed aerodynamic loads show that the OVERFLOW-D2 code can accurately predict the power and spanwise loading of a wind turbine rotor.

NREL GOES Reference Document

The purpose of this document is to create a single reference document representing abridged versions of the PATMOS-x Algorithm Theoretical Basis Documents (ATBDs) specifically relevant to GOES 16-18 processing. This document has been compiled from several documents: Cloud Mask ATBD, AWG Cloud Height Algorithm (ACHA) ATBD, Daytime Cloud Optical and Microphysical Properties (DCOMP) ATBD, and CLAVR-x User's Guide.

PV Lifetime Project (2024 NREL Annual Report)

DOE’s PV Lifetime project was initiated in 2016 with the goal of accurately characterizing the early-life evolution of photovoltaic (PV) field performance. Different PV cell and module technologies result in different initial degradation rates due to effects like light-induced degradation (LID) and light & elevated temperature-induced degradation (LeTID). To accurately characterize the initial field degradation of maximum power (Pmp) requires the use of high-accuracy indoor IV curve measurements at standard test conditions. Therefore, PV modules involved in this study are removed from the field once or twice per year and brought indoors for measurement under constant temperature and irradiance conditions.

NREL Pyrheliometer Comparisons: September 21-27, 2024 (NPC-2024)

Accurate measurements of direct normal (beam) solar irradiance from pyrheliometers are important for developing and deploying solar energy conversion systems, for improving our understanding of Earth's energy budget for climate change studies, and for other science and technology applications involving solar flux. Providing these measurements places many demands on the quality system used by the operator of commercially available radiometers. Maintaining accurate radiometer calibrations that are traceable to an international standard is the first step in producing research-quality solar irradiance measurements.

Enabling Partnership between South Carolina and NREL for Advancing Opportunities in Plastics Recycling Research (EPSCOR for Plastics Recycling)

Proposal Objectives: 1. Utilize depolymerization/fractionation techniques to recover highly processable and reactive feedstocks for polymer synthesis from lignin. 2. Synthesize lignin‐derived non‐isocyanate polyurethane, epoxy, and polyamide using non‐ toxic, biobased route designed for chemical recycling. Characterize resulting materials. 3. Design a high‐yielding chemical recycling process for as‐synthesized materials yielding usable building blocks for many generations of polymer synthesis. 4. Optimize chemical recycling of PET waste for the synthesis of lignin‐based polymers. Compare properties to commercial materials. 5. Optimize reaction conditions and recycling steps to facilitate enhanced sustainability of the synthetic steps and final properties of materials. 6. Complete a lifecycle assessment of lignin utilization and chemical recycling to compare their environmental performance to that of materials produced from virgin material. Identify hot spots and benefits using the chemical recycling process.

NREL's Journey with HPC in the Cloud and Hybrid Computing

This is a planned lightning talk at the NLIT Summit 2025 conference. This would serve as somewhat of a progress update to the presentation I gave at re:Invent 2024 back in November which can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=2133&v=NMq3kL9qObU&feature=youtu.be (my section begins at the included timestamp value). This presentation discusses our usage of Cloud-hosted HPC systems, and in what circumstances they benefit our researchers strategically. We have been making incremental progress in this area since that recording, so for this presentation I would include our latest experiences and observations as we are beginning to implement a hybrid HPC solution. We're in the midst of a cross-team effort of implementing a prototype hybridization solution which would allow users to strategically burst jobs to the cloud. In this talk for NLIT, I would detail lessons-learned, non-starters, architecture diagrams, and other implementation details that may benefit those interested as we continue our experimentation. Our prototype may not be complete by the time of this presentation, but even in the discovery phase of our anticipated design we've discovered a lot of information from others who have worked on hybrid solutions that are worth sharing.
