Control of nonlinear nonautonomous multivariable systems by method subjecting control variables to magnitude constraints
The potential benefits of nonlinear engine control technology applied to a General Electric T700 helicopter engine were investigated. This technology is being developed by the U.S. Navy SPAWAR Systems Center for a variety of applications. When used as a means of active stability control, nonlinear engine control technology uses sensors and small amounts of injected air to allow compressors to operate with reduced stall margin, which can improve engine pressure ratio. The focus of this study was to determine the best achievable reduction in fuel consumption for the T700 turboshaft engine. A customer deck (computer code) was provided by General Electric to calculate the T700 engine performance, and the NASA Glenn Research Center used this code to perform the analysis. The results showed a 2- to 5-percent reduction in brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) at the three Sikorsky H-60 helicopter operating points of cruise, loiter, and hover.
Some computational issues associated with the calcualtion of optimal feedback controls for nonlinear systems in a tensor setting are described. The specific issues addressed pertain to the combinatorial nature of the loading of the elements into tensors used to represent the system, cost, and feedback, and the subsequent calculations involving these elements. Particular attention is given to: the symmetric tensor algebra which is a natural setting for representing polynomials; the conversions between symmetric and nonsymmetric tensors; the general nature of the calculations required; and the solution equation for nonlinear optimal feedback control. It is concluded that nonlinear tensor feedback can improve performance both in terms of system responses and in terms of system stability region.
Recent NASA mission plans require spacecraft to undergo potentially significant maneuvers (or dynamic loading events) with large solar arrays deployed. Therefore there is an increased need to understand and possibly control the nonlinear dynamics in the spacecraft system during such maneuvers. The development of a nonlinear controller is described. The utility of using a nonlinear controller to reduce forces and motion in a solar array wing during a loading event is demonstrated. The result is dramatic reductions in system forces and motion during a 10 second loading event. A motion curve derived from the simulation with the closed loop controller is used to obtain similar benefits with a simpler motion control approach.

Hermann method for controllability determination of linear and nonlinear control systems
A method of nonlinear stochastic control is applied to the problem of providing set-point control. The procedure is illustrated for a nonlinear second-order plant. The controller design uses a variation of the 'multiple-model adaptive control' approach. Specific problems related to the design are investigated, including learning time and set-point accuracy dependence on the number of approximating models, chord versus tangent approximations, and the a priori Markov switching parameter values. Simulations are provided for different situations under various levels of measurement noise.
A full envelope automatic flight control system based on nonlinear inverse systems concepts has been applied to a vertical attitude takeoff and landing (VATOL) fighter aircraft. A new method for using an airborne digital aircraft model to perform the inversion of a nonlinear aircraft model is presented together with the results of a simulation study of the nonlinear inverse system concept for the vertical-attitude hover mode. The system response to maneuver commands in the vertical attitude was found to be excellent; and recovery from large initial offsets and large disturbances was found to be very satisfactory.

Synthesis technique applying Liapunov theory for state vector tracking of nonlinear multivariable control systems illustrated by reactor control design
In this paper we consider a class of optimal control problems that have continuous-time nonlinear dynamics and nonconvex control constraints. We propose a convex relaxation of the nonconvex control constraints, and prove that the optimal solution to the relaxed problem is the globally optimal solution to the original problem with nonconvex control constraints. This lossless convexification enables a computationally simpler problem to be solved instead of the original problem. We demonstrate the approach in simulation with a planetary soft landing problem involving a nonlinear gravity field.
This paper presents a theory of nonlinear state observers for nonlinear and bilinear distributed parameter systems. Convergence results are proved for these observers. Linear feedback control derived from such state observers is applied to the distributed parameter system and conditions are presented for closed-loop stability. The emphasis is on finite dimensional state observers and controllers (which can be implemented with on-line computers) and conditions for their successful operation with infinite dimensional distributed parameter systems.

Controllability of nonlinear dynamic feedback systems based on Liapunov-like stability approach and optimal control theory
Papers are presented on the control of distributed parameter systems using the coprime factorization approach, a hierarchy of geometrically exact models of rotating beams, and the temperature stability of a flux modulated radiant slab. Also considered are a network representation for robots, recovery from controller bounding, and the design of controllers for robust tracking and model following. Other topics include an active control law synthesis for flexible aircraft, the low-order control of large aerospsace structures using residual model filters, and a comparison of component cost methods for component model reduction.
Discussion of the controllability of nonlinear systems described by the equation dx/dt - F(x,u). Concepts formulated by Chow (1939) and Lobry (1970) are applied to establish criteria for F and its derivatives to obtain qualitative information on sets which can be obtained from x which denotes a variable of state in an arbitrary, real, analytical manifold. It is shown that controllability implies strong accessibility for a large class of manifolds including Euclidean spaces.-
This report presents the conceptual development of a life extending control system where the objective is to achieve high performance and structural durability of the plant. A life extending controller is designed for a reusable rocket engine via damage mitigation in both the fuel and oxidizer turbines while achieving high performance for transient responses of the combustion chamber pressure and the O2/H2 mixture ratio. This design approach makes use of a combination of linear and nonlinear controller synthesis techniques and also allows adaptation of the life extending controller module to augment a conventional performance controller of a rocket engine. The nonlinear aspect of the design is achieved using nonlinear parameter optimization of a prescribed control structure.
