Stability optimization of laminated composite plates

The optimum design of plates with orthotropic layers under axial compression and shear is discussed. The plates considered are the laminates of N orthotropic layers whose principal material axes coincide with the plate axes. Each layer is assumed to have the same thickness and an equal number of fibers in the direction of + alpha sub i and - alpha sub i with respect to the plate axis. The fiber directions which give the highest axial buckling stress and the highest shear buckling stress are found by utilizing a mathematical optimization technique for various aspect ratios of the plates. Inhomogeneity in the direction of the plate thickness (stacking sequence) is taken into account in this analysis.

Elastic stability of superplastically formed/diffusion-bonded orthogonally corrugated core sandwich plates

The paper concerns the elastic buckling behavior of a newly developed superplastically formed/diffusion-bonded (SPF/DB) orthogonally corrugated core sandwich plate. Uniaxial buckling loads were calculated for this type of sandwich plate with simply supported edges by using orthotropic sandwich plate theory. The buckling behavior of this sandwich plate was then compared with that of an SPF/DB unidirectionally corrugated core sandwich plate under conditions of equal structural density. It was found that the buckling load for the former was considerably higher than that of the latter.

A general small-deflection theory for flat sandwich plates

A small-deflection theory is developed for the elastic behavior of orthotropic flat plates in which deflections due to shear are taken into account. In this theory, which covers all types of flat sandwich construction, a plate is characterized by seven physical constants (five stiffnesses and two Poisson ratios) of which six are independent. Both the energy expression and the differential equations are developed. Boundary conditions corresponding to simply supported, clamped, and elastically restrained edges are considered.

Mixed finite-difference scheme for analysis of simply supported thick plates.

A mixed finite-difference scheme is presented for the stress and free vibration analysis of simply supported nonhomogeneous and layered orthotropic thick plates. The analytical formulation is based on the linear, three-dimensional theory of orthotropic elasticity and a Fourier approach is used to reduce the governing equations to six first-order ordinary differential equations in the thickness coordinate. The governing equations possess a symmetric coefficient matrix and are free of derivatives of the elastic characteristics of the plate. In the finite difference discretization two interlacing grids are used for the different fundamental unknowns in such a way as to reduce both the local discretization error and the bandwidth of the resulting finite-difference field equations. Numerical studies are presented for the effects of reducing the interior and boundary discretization errors and of mesh refinement on the accuracy and convergence of solutions. It is shown that the proposed scheme, in addition to a number of other advantages, leads to highly accurate results, even when a small number of finite difference intervals is used.

Minimum-weight design of laminated composite plates for postbuckling performance

Minimum-weight design of simply-supported, symmetrically laminated, thin, rectangular, specially orthotropic laminated plates for buckling and postbuckling strength is investigated. The postbuckling analysis is based on an Marguerre-type energy method. The failure load of laminates is calculated by the maximum strain failure criterion based on the in-plane strains. Design variables are individual layer thicknesses with specified fiber orientations. Optimization with discrete valued design is achieved by introducing additional penalty terms to the regular pseudoobjective function of sequential unconstrained minimization technique. The proposed optimization technique is applied to the design of rectangular laminates with various aspect ratios loaded by axial compressive loads.

A study of delamination buckling of laminates

The subject of this paper is the buckling of laminated plates, with a preexisting delamination, subjected to in-plane loading. Each laminate is modelled as an orthotropic Mindlin plate. The analysis is carried out by a combination of the finite element and asymptotic expansion methods. By applying the finite element method, plates with general delamination regions can be studied. The asymptotic expansion method reduces the number of unknown variables of the eigenvalue equation to that of the equation for a single Kirchhoff plate. Numerical results are presented for several examples. The effects of the shape, size, and position of the delamination on the buckling load are studied through these examples.

Nonlinear behavior of shells of revolution under cyclic loading

A large deflection elastic-plastic analysis is presented, applicable to orthotropic axisymmetric plates and shells of revolution subjected to monotonic and cyclic loading conditions. The analysis is based on the finite-element method. It employs a new higher order, fully compatible, doubly curved orthotropic shell-of-revolution element using cubic Hermitian expansions for both meridional and normal displacements. Both perfectly plastic and strain hardening behavior are considered. Strain hardening is incorporated through use of the Prager-Ziegler kinematic hardening theory, which predicts an ideal Bauschinger effect. Numerous sample problems involving monotonic and cyclic loading conditions are analyzed. The monotonic results are compared with other theoretical solutions.

Optimum design of laminated plates under axial compression

The paper presents a method for designing laminated plates with orthotropic layers under uniaxial and biaxial compression. The objective is to find the fiber direction of all the layers that give the highest buckling stress; therefore, it is necessary to solve an unconstrained maximization problem. The optimization technique used is Powell's conjugate direction method. Numerical calculations were made for plates with three, four, and six layers.

Effect of finite width on deflection and energy release rate of an orthotropic double cantilever specimen

The problem of an orthotropic cantilevered plate subjected to a uniformly distributed end load is solved by the Rayleigh-Ritz energy method. The result is applied to laminated composite, double cantilevered specimens to estimate the effect of crack tip constraint on the transverse curvature, deflection and energy release rate. The solution is also utilized to determined finite width correction factors for fracture energy characterization tests in which neither plane stress nor plane strain conditions apply.

A metal sheet stiffened by a partially debonded composite quarter-plate

An isotropic sheet stiffened by means of an orthotropic quarter-plate is considered. The quarter-plate is assumed to be perfectly bonded to the metal sheet everywhere except an area of debonding which may develop due to high stress concentrations. The adhesive which has a small constant thickness is treated as a shear spring. The loads are applied at infinity and supposed to be transmitted through the metal plate. Shear stress distribution between the two plates was obtained from the continuity of displacements along an area where they were bonded to each other.

Elastic stability of laminated, flat and curved, long rectangular plates subjected to combined inplane loads

A method is presented to predict theoretical buckling loads of long, rectangular flat and curved laminated plates with arbitrary orientation of orthotropic axes each lamina. The plate is subjected to combined inplane normal and shear loads. Arbitrary boundary conditions may be stipulated along the longitudinal sides of the plate. In the absence of inplane shear loads and extensional-shear coupling, the analysis is also applicable to finite length plates. Numerical results are presented for curved laminated composite plates with boundary conditions and subjected to various loadings. These results indicate some of the complexities involved in the numerical solution of the analysis for general laminates. The results also show that the reduced bending stiffness approximation when applied to buckling problems could lead to considerable error in some cases and therefore must be used with caution.
