Contributions to HiLiftPW-3 Using Structured, Overset Grid Methods

The High-Lift Common Research Model (HL-CRM) and the JAXA Standard Model (JSM) were analyzed computationally using both the OVERFLOW and LAVA codes for the third AIAA High-Lift Prediction Workshop. Geometry descriptions and the test cases simulated are described. With the HL-CRM, the effects of surface smoothness during grid projection and the effect of partially sealing a flap gap were studied. Grid refinement studies were performed at two angles of attack using both codes. For the JSM, simulations were performed with and without the nacelle/pylon. Without the nacelle/pylon, evidence of multiple solutions was observed when a quadratic constitutive relation is used in the turbulence modeling; however, using time-accurate simulation seemed to alleviate this issue. With the nacelle/pylon, no evidence of multiple solutions was observed. Laminar-turbulent transition modeling was applied to both JSM configuration, and had an overall favorable impact on the lift predictions.

Application of Overset Technology on SIMPLEX Turbopump Design

A viewgraph presentation shows computer generated images of the Simplex Turbopump. Machine schematics are shown with scaled details of the nozzle ring assay and the turbine gas flow path. Grid generation is used to show nozzle grids, blade contours, blade grids and simplex full configuration and geometry. A flow simulation shows mach contours in absolute and relative frames.

Overset Grid Methods Applied to Nonlinear Potential Flows

The objectives of this viewgraph presentation are to develop Chimera-based potential methodology which is compatible with overflow and overflow infrastructure, creating options for an advanced problem solving environment and to significantly reduce turnaround time for aerodynamic analysis and design (primarily cruise conditions).

Time-Dependent Simulations of Incompressible Flow in a Turbopump Using Overset Grid Approach

This viewgraph presentation provides information on mathematical modelling of the SSME (space shuttle main engine). The unsteady SSME-rig1 start-up procedure from the pump at rest has been initiated by using 34.3 million grid points. The computational model for the SSME-rig1 has been completed. Moving boundary capability is obtained by using DCF module in OVERFLOW-D. MPI (Message Passing Interface)/OpenMP hybrid parallel code has been benchmarked.

Progress in Unsteady Turbopump Flow Simulations Using Overset Grid Systems

This viewgraph presentation provides information on unsteady flow simulations for the Second Generation RLV (Reusable Launch Vehicle) baseline turbopump. Three impeller rotations were simulated by using a 34.3 million grid points model. MPI/OpenMP hybrid parallelism and MLP shared memory parallelism has been implemented and benchmarked in INS3D, an incompressible Navier-Stokes solver. For RLV turbopump simulations a speed up of more than 30 times has been obtained. Moving boundary capability is obtained by using the DCF module. Scripting capability from CAD geometry to solution is developed. Unsteady flow simulations for advanced consortium impeller/diffuser by using a 39 million grid points model are currently underway. 1.2 impeller rotations are completed. The fluid/structure coupling is initiated.

Best Practices in Overset Grid Generation

Accurate geometry + high quality grids are necessary for an accurate solution. Other requirements include a) Verified/validated solver with appropriate physics b) Convergence criteria consistent with application: 1) Aerodynamics - forces and moments; 2) Heat transfer - maximum and minimum heat transfer coefficients.

Structured Overset and Unstructured Grid Simulations for the Third AIAA Sonic Boom Prediction Workshop

Predictions using the Launch Ascent and Vehicle Aerodynamics (LAVA) Unstructured and Structured Curvilinear solvers for the Biconvex and C608 geometries are compared in support of the 3rd AIAA Sonic Boom Prediction workshop. Description of the mesh generation techniques and numerical methods are provided along with a comparison of nearfield and far-field predictions with available experimental data as well as other workshop sub-missions. Strong consistency was observed between the Biconvex and C608 nearfield predictions across the two solvers used for this study, as well as validation and verification data. Additionally, near-field and farfield ground signature results using a combination of a truncated computational fluid dynamics (CFD) domain coupled to a mid-field space marching method and propagated to the ground using sBOOM will be discussed. This approach is shown to provide an efficient way to propagate near-field pressure signatures to the ground with the same accuracy as the near-field CFD coupled to sBOOM, but at less computational cost.
