Acute Ozone-Induced Transcriptional Changes in Markers of Oxidative Stress and Glucocorticoid Signaling in the Rat Hippocampus and Hypothalamus Are Sex-Specific

Exposure to a prototypic air pollutant ozone (O 3 ) has been associated with the activation of neuroendocrine stress response along with neural changes in oxidative stress (OS), inflammation, and Alzheimer’s disease-like pathologies in susceptible animal models. We hypothesized that neural oxidative and transcriptional changes induced by O 3 in stress responsive regions are sex-dependent. Male and female adult Long–Evans rats were exposed to filtered air or O 3 for two consecutive days (0.8 ppm, 4 h/day) and brain regions were flash-frozen. Activities of cerebellar OS parameters and mitochondrial complex I, II, and IV enzymes were assessed to confirm prior findings. We assessed transcriptional changes in hypothalamus (HYP) and hippocampus (HIP) for markers of OS, microglial activity and glucocorticoid signaling using qPCR. Although there were no O 3 or sex-related differences in the cerebellar activities of OS and mitochondrial enzymes, the levels of protein carbonyls and complex II activities were higher in females regardless of O 3 . There were no statistical differences in baseline expression of genes related to OS (Cat, Dhcr24, Foxm1, Gpx1, Gss, Nfe2l2, Sod1) except for lower HYP Sod1 expression in air-exposed females than males, and higher HIP Gss expression in O 3 -exposed females relative to matched males. Microglial marker Aif1 expression was higher in O 3 -exposed females relative to males; O 3 inhibited Itgam only in males. The expression of Bdnf in HIP and HYP was inhibited by O 3 in both sexes. Genes related to glucocorticoid signaling (Fkbp4, Fkbp5, Hsp90aa1, Hspa4, nr3c1, nr3c2) showed sex-specific effects due to O 3 exposure. Baseline expression of HIP Fkbp4 was higher in females relative to males. O 3 inhibited Nr3c1 in female HIP and male HYP, but Nr3c2 was inhibited in male HYP. Fkbp4 expression was higher in O 3 -exposed females when compared to matched males, whereas Fkbp5 was expressed at higher levels in both brain regions of males and females. These results indicate that sex-specific brain region responses to O 3 might, in part, be caused by OS and regulation of glucocorticoid signaling.

Source Analysis of Ozone Pollution in Liaoyuan City’s Atmosphere Based on Machine Learning Models and HYSPLIT Clustering Method

Firstly, this study investigates the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of the ozone (O 3 ) pollution in Liaoyuan City using monitoring data from 2015 to 2024. Then, three machine learning models (ML)—random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), and artificial neural network (ANN)—are employed to quantify the influence of meteorological and non-meteorological factors on O 3 concentrations. Finally, the HYSPLIT clustering method and CMAQ model are utilized to analyze inter-regional transport characteristics, identifying the causes of O 3 pollution. The results indicate that O 3 pollution in Liaoyuan exhibits a distinct seasonal pattern, with the highest concentrations found in spring and summer, peaking in the afternoon. Among the three ML models, the random forest model demonstrates the best predictive performance (R 2 = 0.9043). Feature importance identifies NO 2 as the primary driving factor, followed by meteorological conditions in the second quarter and land surface characteristics. Furthermore, regional transport significantly contributes to O 3 pollution, with approximately 80% of air mass trajectories in heavily polluted episodes originating from adjacent industrial areas and the sea. The combined effects of transboundary precursors and O 3 transport with local emissions and meteorological conditions further increase the O 3 pollution level. This study highlights the need to strengthen coordinated NO X and VOCs emission reductions and enhance regional joint prevention and control strategies in China.

SCILLA ozone (O3) airborne data

Ozone mixing ratios in ppb are measured using a Teledyne API Model T400U. The analyzer uses UV absorption at 254 nm to determine O3 concentration. Sampled air was pulled from above the Naval Postgraduate School’s (NPS) Twin Otter aircraft through a rear-facing, ¼” OD PFA Teflon tube. The sample stream was split between several other gas analyzers (CO, NOx, and H2O) and an oxidation flow reactor. The data were recorded at 0.1 Hz.

Pinhole‐Free Ultrathin Silicon Oxide Layer by Ozone‐Dissolved Deionized Water

The pinhole‐free silicon oxide (SiO x ) layer grown using dissolved ozone in deionized water (DI‐O 3 ) is demonstrated. An ultrathin SiO x layer of thickness 1.53 nm ± 1.5% is grown on silicon wafer using 7 ppm DI‐O 3 . A four‐step methodology, including 25 wt% aq. tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) solution at 80 °C, is employed to magnify the pinhole signatures in the underlying silicon and visualized with dark‐field optical microscopy (DFOM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The DFOM images show spots on the surface of wafer that originate from airborne particles, contamination, etc. SEM images reveal the absence of etch pits in silicon even after etching of SiO x /silicon in TMAH for 300 s. The minority carrier lifetime and interface states density in AlO x ‐capped SiO x /Si structure are ≥2 ms at carrier density of 1 × 10 15 cm −3 and less than 2 × 10 11 cm −2 eV −1 , respectively.

Rapid increase in tropospheric ozone over Southeast Asia attributed to changes in precursor emission source regions and sectors

Observations indicate that tropospheric ozone (O 3 ) concentrations over Southeast Asia have been increasing rapidly since the 1990s. Here, we quantify source contributions from geographical regions and emission sectors of the two distinct types of O 3 precursors, i.e., nitrogen oxides (NO x ) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), to the increase in tropospheric O 3 in Southeast Asia during 1990–2019 using an O 3 source tagging technique implemented in a global chemistry-climate model. In this work, the results show that although local anthropogenic emission of NO x in Southeast Asia only contributes 18% of the annual averaged near-surface O 3 concentration, the increase in local NO x emission dominates the increasing trend of O 3 concentration in Southeast Asia, accounting for 107% of the regional averaged trend of 1.07 ppb decade -1 . Increases in NO x emissions from East Asia and South Asia explain 29% of the increasing trend, but 9% is offset by the emission reduction in North America. Ground transportation is responsible for 79% of the rapid O 3 increase, followed by 39% contribution from international shipping. Because an increase in anthropogenic NO x emissions enhances the O 3 production efficiency by VOCs, the increase in near-surface O 3 concentrations in Southeast Asia is thereby largely contributed by methane and biogenic VOCs.

Stability of Metal–Organic Framework-Supported Amines under Exposure to Ozone Generated from Air

Amine compounds supported on porous materials such as metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have shown promising performance for direct air capture (DAC) due to their enhanced affinity for CO 2 . Although features such as adsorption capacity and selectivity are paramount in these composites, their long-term stability has a major impact on the operating cost of DAC systems. In this work, changes in carbon capture performance, crystallinity, porosity and chemical environment of the constituting atoms of MOF-amine composites are explored after exposure to ozone and NOx impurities generated from corona discharge applied to air. From the obtained results, the stabilities of Mg 2 (dobpdc) (dobpdc 4– = 4,4′-dioxidobiphenyl-3,3′-dicarboxylate) grafted with ethylenediamine (en), N-methylethylenediamine (men), and N,N-dimethylethylenediamine (dmen), as well as MIL-101(Cr) MOF impregnated with polyethylenimine (PEI), are compared. A negative effect in the overall CO 2 adsorption capacity is observed for all MOF composites after exposure, as well as a decrease in the adsorption step pressure of CO 2 for Mg 2 (dobpdc) amine-grafted composites, as shown via dynamic gravimetric adsorption experiments. Spectroscopic analyses indicate that oxidation of amine groups through the formation of nitro functional groups occurs as well as a decrease in the electron-donation interaction between the supported amines and the metal nodes of the MOFs.

A Vertically Resolved Canopy Improves Chemical Transport Model Predictions of Ozone Deposition to North Temperate Forests

Abstract Dry deposition is the second largest tropospheric ozone (O 3 ) sink and occurs through stomatal and nonstomatal pathways. Current O 3 uptake predictions are limited by the simplistic big‐leaf schemes commonly used in chemical transport models (CTMs) to parameterize deposition. Such schemes fail to reproduce observed O 3 fluxes over terrestrial ecosystems, highlighting the need for more realistic treatment of surface‐atmosphere exchange in CTMs. We address this need by linking a resolved canopy model (1D Multi‐Layer Canopy CHemistry and Exchange Model, MLC‐CHEM) to the GEOS‐Chem CTM and use this new framework to simulate O 3 fluxes over three north temperate forests. We compare results with in situ measurements from four field studies and with standalone, observationally constrained MLC‐CHEM runs to test current knowledge of O 3 deposition and its drivers. We show that GEOS‐Chem overpredicts observed O 3 fluxes across all four studies by up to 2×, whereas the resolved‐canopy models capture observed diel profiles of O 3 deposition and in‐canopy concentrations to within 10%. Relative humidity and solar irradiance are strong O 3 flux drivers over these forests, and uncertainties in those fields provide the largest remaining source of model deposition biases. Flux partitioning analysis shows that: (a) nonstomatal loss accounts for 60% of O 3 deposition on average; (b) in‐canopy chemistry makes only a small contribution to total O 3 fluxes; and (c) the CTM big‐leaf treatment overestimates O 3 ‐driven stomatal loss and plant phytotoxicity in these temperate forests by up to 7×. Results motivate the application of fully online vertically explicit canopy schemes in CTMs for improved O 3 predictions.

Identification of the acetaldehyde oxide Criegee intermediate reaction network in the ozone-assisted low-temperature oxidation of trans -2-butene

Uni- and bi-molecular reactions involving Criegee intermediates (CIs) have been the focus of many studies due to the role these molecules play in atmospheric chemistry. The reactivity of CIs is known to strongly depend on their structure. The reaction network of the second simplest CI, acetaldehyde oxide (CH 3 CHOO), is investigated in this work in an atmospheric pressure jet-stirred reactor (JSR) during the ozonolysis of trans-2-butene to explore the kinetic pathways relevant to atmospheric chemistry and low-temperature combustion. The mole fraction profiles of reactants, intermediates, and final products are determined by means of molecular-beam mass spectrometry in conjunction with single-photon ionization employing tunable synchrotron-generated vacuum ultraviolet radiation. A network of CI reactions is identified in the temperature region below 600 K, characterized by CI addition to trans-2-butene, water, formaldehyde, formic acid, and methanol. No sequential additions of the CH 3 CHOO CI are observed, in contrast with the reactivity of the simplest CI (H 2 COO) and the earlier observation of an extensive reaction network with up to four H 2 COO sequential additions (Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2019, 21, 7341–7357). Experimental photoionization efficiency scans recorded at 300 K and 425 K and ab initio threshold energy calculations lead to the identification and quantification of previously elusive intermediates, such as ketohydroperoxide and hydroperoxide species. Specifically, the C 4 H 8 + O 3 adduct is identified as a ketohydroperoxide (KHP, 3-hydroperoxybutan-2-one, CH 3 C([double bond, length as m-dash]O)CH(CH 3 )OOH), while hydroxyacetaldehyde (glycolaldehyde, HCOCH 2 OH) formation is attributed to unimolecular isomerization of the CIs. Other hydroperoxide species such as methyl hydroperoxide (CH 3 OOH), ethyl hydroperoxide (C 2 H 5 OOH), butyl hydroperoxide (OOH), hydroperoxyl acetaldehyde (HOOCH 2 CHO), hydroxyethyl hydroperoxide (CH 3 CH(OH)OOH), but-1-enyl-3-hydroperoxide, and 4-hydroxy-3-methylpentan-2-one (HOCH(CH 3 )CH(CH 3 )C([double bond, length as m-dash]O)CH 3 ) are also identified. Detection of additional oxygenated species such as methanol, ethanol, ketene, and aldehydes suggests multiple active oxidation routes. Finally, these results provide additional evidence that CIs are key intermediates of the ozone-unsaturated hydrocarbon reactions providing critical inputs for improved kinetics models.

Growth of PdCoO 2 by ozone-assisted molecular-beam epitaxy

We report the in situ , direct epitaxial synthesis of (0001)-oriented PdCoO 2 thin films on c-plane sapphire using ozone-assisted molecular-beam epitaxy. The resulting films have smoothness, structural perfection, and electrical characteristics that rival the best in situ grown PdCoO 2 thin films in the literature. Metallic conductivity is observed in PdCoO 2 films as thin as ~2.0 nm. The PdCoO 2 films contain 180° in-plane rotation twins. Scanning transmission electron microscopy reveals that the growth of PdCoO 2 on the (0001) surface of Al 2 O 3 begins with the CoO 2 layer.

Observations of ozone, acyl peroxy nitrates, and their precursors during summer 2019 at Carlsbad Caverns National Park, New Mexico

Carlsbad Caverns National Park (CAVE) is located in southeastern New Mexico and is adjacent to the Permian Basin, one of the most productive oil and natural gas (O&G) production regions in the United States. Since 2018, ozone (O 3 ) at CAVE has frequently exceeded the 70 ppbv 8-hour National Ambient Air Quality Standard. We examine the influence of regional emissions on O 3 formation using observations of O 3 , nitrogen oxides (NO x = NO + NO 2 ), a suite of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN), and peroxypropionyl nitrate (PPN). Elevated O 3 and its precursors are observed when the wind is from the southeast, the direction of the Permian Basin. We identify 13 days during the July 25 to September 5, 2019 study period when the maximum daily 8-hour average (MDA8) O 3 exceeded 65 ppbv; MDA8 O 3 exceeded 70 ppbv on 5 of these days. The results of a positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis are used to identify and attribute source contributions of VOCs and NO x . On days when the winds are from the southeast, there are larger contributions from factors associated with primary O&G emissions; and, on high O 3 days, there is more contribution from factors associated with secondary photochemical processing of O&G emissions. The observed ratio of VOCs to NOx is consistently high throughout the study period, consistent with NO x -limited O 3 production. Finally, all high O 3 days coincide with elevated acyl peroxy nitrate abundances with PPN to PAN ratios > 0.15 ppbv ppbv -1 indicating that anthropogenic VOC precursors, and often alkanes specifically, dominate the photochemistry.

ENSO modulation of summertime tropospheric ozone over China

Ozone (O 3 ) is one of the most critical pollutants affecting air quality in China in recent years. In this study, different impacts of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) warm/cold phases on summertime tropospheric O 3 over China are examined based on model simulations, ground measurements, and reanalysis data. Summertime surface O 3 concentrations in China show a positive correlation with ENSO index during years 1990–2019, with the largest increases by 20% over southern China in El Niño (warm phase) relative to La Niña (cold phase) years. The ENSO modulation extends to the middle and even upper troposphere. Our analysis indicates that O 3 flux convergence associated with weakened southerlies is the primary reason for the increase in tropospheric O 3 over southern China. In addition, the O 3 increase during El Niño years is mainly from domestic emissions in China. This study highlights the potential significance of ENSO in modulating tropospheric O 3 concentrations in China, with great implications for O 3 pollution mitigation.

Reducing field emission in superconducting cavities with ozone

Contaminations on the active surface of high-power microwave resonators, such as radio-frequency accelerator cavities, can greatly enlarge electron field emission and reduce their performance. In this work, we demonstrate the use of ozone to clean the surface of niobium superconducting radio-frequency cavities resulting in reduced field emission and enhanced accelerating gradient before onset of field emission. We report results from processing four cavities.

Bioenergy sorghum maintains photosynthetic capacity in elevated ozone concentrations

Abstract Elevated tropospheric ozone concentration (O 3 ) significantly reduces photosynthesis and productivity in several C 4 crops including maize, switchgrass and sugarcane. However, it is unknown how O 3 affects plant growth, development and productivity in sorghum ( Sorghum bicolor L.), an emerging C 4 bioenergy crop. Here, we investigated the effects of elevated O 3 on photosynthesis, biomass and nutrient composition of a number of sorghum genotypes over two seasons in the field using free‐air concentration enrichment (FACE), and in growth chambers. We also tested if elevated O 3 altered the relationship between stomatal conductance and environmental conditions using two common stomatal conductance models. Sorghum genotypes showed significant variability in plant functional traits, including photosynthetic capacity, leaf N content and specific leaf area, but responded similarly to O 3 . At the FACE experiment, elevated O 3 did not alter net CO 2 assimilation ( A ), stomatal conductance ( g s ), stomatal sensitivity to the environment, chlorophyll fluorescence and plant biomass, but led to reductions in the maximum carboxylation capacity of phosphoenolpyruvate and increased stomatal limitation to A in both years. These findings suggest that bioenergy sorghum is tolerant to O 3 and could be used to enhance biomass productivity in O 3 polluted regions.

Approaches to investigate crop responses to ozone pollution: from O 3 -FACE to satellite-enabled modeling

Ozone (O 3 ) is a damaging air pollutant to crops. As one of the most reactive oxidants known, O 3 rapidly forms other reactive oxygen species (ROS) once it enters leaves through stomata. Those ROS in turn can cause oxidative stress, reduce photosynthesis, accelerate senescence, and decrease crop yield. To improve and adapt our feed, fuel, and food supply to rising O 3 pollution, a number of Free Air Concentration Enrichment (O 3 -FACE) facilities have been developed around the world and have studied key staple crops. In this review, we provide an overview of the FACE facilities and highlight some of the lessons learned from the last two decades of research. We discuss the differences between C 3 and C 4 crop responses to elevated O 3 , the possible trade-off between productivity and protection, genetic variation in O 3 response within and across species, and how we might leverage this observed variation for crop improvement. We also highlight the need to improve understanding of the interaction between rising O 3 pollution and other aspects of climate change, notably drought. Finally, we propose the use of globally modeled O 3 data that are available at increasing spatial and temporal resolutions to expand upon the research conducted at the limited number of global O 3 -FACE facilities.
