Radio observations of Abell clusters and a comparison with certain Einstein observations

Areas around 70 clusters have been observed at the Arecibo Observatory primarily for coordination with about 60 Einstein X-ray sources. Arecibo source coordinates and flux density are tabulated, and some identifications are made with cataloged radio sources. Statistical estimates are made of the percentage of cluster sources among all sources in certain areas and to limits on the flux density of 430 MHz. Arecibo and other radio data are compared with the available Einstein data of seven clusters. Not every Einstein source has a radio counterpart, and the counterparts may variously be bilobed, tailed, or single. A parameter which is proportional to source continuum power at 430 MHz ranges over fewer orders of magnitude than the associated source X-ray luminosity, with no certain correlation between these parameters. NRAO Green Bank interferometer observations of A401 and A2142 are reported.

Observing system simulation experiments related to space-borne Lidar wind profiling. Part 1: Forecast impacts of highly idealized observing systems

Simulation experiments comparing the relative importance of an idealized LIDAR wind profiling system with idealized temperature and pressure sounding systems on 12 h forecasts are studied for three "nature' fields representing the true evolving atmospheric states. The three fields are obtained respectively from: (1) a long integration of the GLAS 4th Order Model (4 deg lat x 5 deg lon x 9 levels), (2) a continuous sequence of NMC operational analysis and, (3) a long integration of the ECMWF high resolution (1.875 deg 1 lat x 1.875 deg lon x 15 layers) operational forecast model. These fields are interpolated to the grid of the GLAS model and used for simulating the observed global analysed fields of winds, temperature, moisture and surface pressure. The same interpolated fields are also used for verification of forecast impact. The effects of clouds, aerosol concentrations, and instrument accuracies on the simulated observation will be discussed.

Distortion effects in spacecraft observations of MHD toroidal standing waves - Theory and observations

This paper considers the distortion effect of the simultaneous occurrence of locally resonant toroidal pulsations over a range of L shells on the interpretation of spacecraft observations of these waves. A theoretical model is developed which yields quantitative predictions of the phase shear effect that causes a shift from the true pulsation frequency measured from a spacecraft moving radially across L shells. Calculations with this model indicate that, due to this effect, the AMPTE/CCE satellite should observe 8-30 percent lower frequencies on outbound passes than on inbound passes. A comparison of fundamental mode frequency measurements made on 10 inbound and 9 outbound passes of the AMPTE/CCE satellite in the morning sector confirms the predictions of the model.

Data base on physical observations of near-Earth asteroids and establishment of a network to coordinate observations of newly discovered near-Earth asteroids

This program consists of two tasks: (1) development of a data base of physical observations of near-earth asteroids and establishment of a network to coordinate observations of newly discovered earth-approaching asteroids; and (2) a simulation of the surface of low-activity comets. Significant progress was made on task one and, and task two was completed during the period covered by this progress report.

Radio observations of the remnant of the supernova of AD 1006. II - Polarization observations

Polarized flux observations of the SNR of AD 1006 made with the NRAO VLA are presented. The gross morphology in polarized intensity reveals two bright limbs across from each other. The SE quadrant, faintest in total intensity, shows significant polarized flux, while the extension of the NE, fairly bright in total intensity, appears almost unpolarized. Significant polarized flux is also seen in the SNR center. An integrated polarized fraction of about 13 percent is found; ratios as high as 30 percent may occur locally. The observations can be used to infer an intrinsic polarization position angle, and it is deduced that the ordered component of the magnetic field is primarily radial. The polarized fraction upper limits imply that the magnetic field is dominantly disordered, and it is estimated that the radial component contains only about 20 percent of the total magnetic energy density.

Extended field observations of cirrus clouds using a ground-based cloud observing system

The evolution of synoptic-scale dynamics associated with a middle and upper tropospheric cloud event that occurred on 26 November 1991 is examined. The case under consideration occurred during the FIRE CIRRUS-II Intensive Field Observing Period held in Coffeyville, KS during Nov. and Dec., 1991. Using data from the wind profiler demonstration network and a temporally and spatially augmented radiosonde array, emphasis is given to explaining the evolution of the kinematically-derived ageostrophic vertical circulations and correlating the circulation with the forcing of an extensively sampled cloud field. This is facilitated by decomposing the horizontal divergence into its component parts through a natural coordinate representation of the flow. Ageostrophic vertical circulations are inferred and compared to the circulation forcing arising from geostrophic confluence and shearing deformation derived from the Sawyer-Eliassen Equation. It is found that a thermodynamically indirect vertical circulation existed in association with a jet streak exit region. The circulation was displaced to the cyclonic side of the jet axis due to the orientation of the jet exit between a deepening diffluent trough and building ridge. The cloud line formed in the ascending branch of the vertical circulation with the most concentrated cloud development occurring in conjunction with the maximum large-scale vertical motion. The relationship between the large scale dynamics and the parameterization of middle and upper tropospheric clouds in large-scale models is discussed and an example of ice water contents derived from a parameterization forced by the diagnosed vertical motions and observed water vapor contents is presented.

The Hatizyo Hydrographic Observatory, which is one of the essential magnetic observatories in Japan, was established in 1979 and is currently operated by the Hydrographic Department, Maritime Safety Agency. This is the annual report compiled from the results of magnetic observations carried out at the observatory in 1994. As to the instruments used for magnetic observations, the digital recording variometer was replaced by a fluxgate magnetometer in 1986, and one set each of the proton and fluxgate magnetometers was additionally installed in January and October 1992, respectively.

Gamma-Ray Burst Arrival Time Localizations: Simultaneous Observations by Mars Observer, Compton Gamma Ray Observatory and Ulysses

Between 1992 October 4 and 1993 August 1, concurrent coverage by the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO), Mars Observer (MO), and Ulysses spacecraft was obtained for 78 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Although most of these were below the MO and Ulysses thresholds, nine were positively detected by all three spacecraft, with data quality adequate for quantitative localization analysis. All were localized independently to approximately 2 deg accuracy by the CGRO Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE). We computed arrival-time error boxes with larger dimensions ranging from a few arcminutes to the diameters of the BATSE-only boxes and with smaller dimensions in the arcminute range. Three events are of particular interest: GB 930704 (BATSE 2428) has been described as a possible repeater. The arrival-time information is consistent with that hypothesis, but only just so. The GB 930706 (2431) box, at approximately 1 min x 4 min, is the only one this small obtained since Pioneer Venus Orbiter (PVO) entered the Venusian atmosphere in 1992 October. Sensitive radio and optical observations of this location were made within 8 and 9 days of the burst, but no counterpart candidates were identified. GB 930801 (2477) is the first GRB that had its localization improved by taking into account BATSE Earth occultation.

ASCA Observations of the Dwarf Novae SS Cyg and VW Hyi And Observations of the Precessing Disk Cataclysmic Variable TV Col

The observations for both SS Cyg and VW Hyi were to be scheduled as Targets of Opportunity jointly with other satellites. The VW Hyi observation was obtained jointly with EUVE during a superoutburst. The XTE data were initially processed, revealing no detection. However, the XTE team improved the instrumental background model and distributed it in July 1998. A further improvement was made in August 1999. The improved models allow a better background subtraction, thereby detecting previously un-detected sources.

The Impact of British Airways Wind Observations on the Goddard Earth Observing System Analyses and Forecasts

British Airways flight data recorders can provide valuable meteorological information, but they are not available in real-time on the Global Telecommunication System. Information from the flight recorders was used in the Global Aircraft Data Set (GADS) experiment as independent observations to estimate errors in wind analyses produced by major operational centers. The GADS impact on the Goddard Earth Observing System Data Assimilation System (GEOS DAS) analyses was investigated using GEOS-1 DAS version. Recently, a new Data Assimilation System (fvDAS) has been developed at the Data Assimilation Office, NASA Goddard. Using fvDAS , the, GADS impact on analyses and forecasts was investigated. It was shown the GADS data intensify wind speed analyses of jet streams for some cases. Five-day forecast anomaly correlations and root mean squares were calculated for 300, 500 hPa and SLP for six different areas: Northern and Southern Hemispheres, North America, Europe, Asia, USA These scores were obtained as averages over 21 forecasts from January 1998. Comparisons with scores for control experiments without GADS showed a positive impact of the GADS data on forecasts beyond 2-3 days for all levels at the most areas.

Project to Interface Climate Modeling on Global and Regional Scales with Earth Observing (EOS) Observations

This ten-year NASA IDS project began in 1990. Its initial work plan adopted the NASA provided timeline that data would become available for new Earth Observing System (EOS) platforms beginning in 1995. Over its first phase, it was based at NCAR, which had submitted the original proposal and involved activities of a substantial number of co-investigators at NCAR who engaged in research over several areas related to the observations expected to be received from the EOS platforms. Their focus was the theme of use of EOS data for improving climate models for projecting global change. From the climate system viewpoint, the IDS addressed land, clouds-hydrological cycle, radiative fluxes and especially aerosol impacts, ocean and sea-ice, and stratosphere. Other research addressed issues of data assimilation, diagnostic analyses, and data set development from current satellite systems, especially use of SAR data for climate models.

Fires and Smoke Observed from the Earth Observing System MODIS Instrument: Products, Validation, and Operational Use

The MODIS sensor, launched on NASA's Terra satellite at the end of 1999, was designed with 36 spectral channels for a wide array of land, ocean, and atmospheric investigations. MODIS has a unique ability to observe fires, smoke, and burn scars globally. Its main fire detection channels saturate at high brightness temperatures: 500 K at 4 microns and 400 K at 11 microns, which can only be attained in rare circumstances at the I kin fire detection spatial resolution. Thus, unlike other polar orbiting satellite sensors with similar thermal and spatial resolutions, but much lower saturation temperatures (e.g. AVHRR and ATSR), MODIS can distinguish between low intensity ground surface fires and high intensity crown forest fires. Smoke column concentration over land is for the first time being derived from the MOMS solar channels, extending from 0.41 microns to 2.1 microns. The smoke product has been provisionally validated both globally and regionally over southern Africa and central and south America. Burn scars are observed from MODIS even in the presence of smoke, using the 1.2 to 2.1 micron channels. MODIS burned area information is used to estimate pyrogenic emissions. A wide range of these fire and related products and validation are demonstrated for the wild fires that occurred in northwestern United States in the summer of 2000. The MODIS rapid response system and direct broadcast capability is being developed to enable users to obtain and generate data in near real time. It is expected that health and land management organizations will use these systems for monitoring the occurrence of fires and the dispersion of smoke within two to six hours after data acquisition.

Comparison of HIPWAC and Mars Express SPICAM Observations of Ozone on Mars 2006-2008 and Variation from 1993 IRHS Observations

Ozone is a tracer of photochemistry in the atmosphere of Mars and an observable used to test predictions of photochemical models. We present a comparison of retrieved ozone abundances on Mars using ground-based infrared heterodyne measurements by NASA Goddard Space Flight Center's Heterodyne Instrument for Planetary Wind And Composition (HIPWAC) and space-based Mars Express Spectroscopy for the Investigation of the Characteristics of the Atmosphere of Mars (SPICAM) ultraviolet measurements. Ozone retrievals from simultaneous measurements in February 2008 were very consistent (0.8 microns-atm), as were measurements made close in time (ranging from less than 1 to greater than 8 microns-atm) during this period and during opportunities in October 2006 and February 2007. The consistency of retrievals from the two different observational techniques supports combining the measurements for testing photochemistry-coupled general circulation models and for investigating variability over the long-term between spacecraft missions. Quantitative comparison with ground-based measurements by NASA'GSFC's Infrared Heterodyne Spectrometer (IRHS) in 1993 reveals 2-4 times more ozone at low latitudes than in 2008 at the same season, and such variability was not evident over the shorter period of the Mars Express mission. This variability may be due to cloud activity.

Opportunities for Coordinated Observations of CO2 with the Orbiting Carbon Observatory (OCO) and Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite (GOSAT)

The Orbiting Carbon Observatory (OCO) and the Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite (GOSAT) are the first two satellites designed to make global measurements of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) with the precision and sampling needed identify and monitor surface sources and sinks of this important greenhouse gas. Because the operational phases of the OCO and GOSAT missions overlap in time, there are numerous opportunities for comparing and combining the data from these two satellites to improve our understanding of the natural processes and human activities that control the atmospheric CO2 and it variability over time. Opportunities for cross-calibration, cross-validation, and coordinated observations that are currently under consideration are summarized here.

Observational Evidence Against Mountain-Wave Generation of Ice Nuclei as a Prerequisite for the Formation of Three Solid Nitric Acid Polar Stratospheric Clouds Observed in the Arctic in Early December 1999

A number of recently published papers suggest that mountain-wave activity in the stratosphere, producing ice particles when temperatures drop below the ice frost point, may be the primary source of large NAT particles. In this paper we use measurements from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) instruments on board the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) polar-orbiting satellites to map out regions of ice clouds produced by stratospheric mountain-wave activity inside the Arctic vortex. Lidar observations from three DC-8 flights in early December 1999 show the presence of solid nitric acid (Type Ia or NAT) polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs). By using back trajectories and superimposing the position maps on the AVHRR cloud imagery products, we show that these observed NAT clouds could not have originated at locations of high-amplitude mountain-wave activity. We also show that mountain-wave PSC climatology data and Mountain Wave Forecast Model 2.0 (MWFM-2) raw hemispheric ray and grid box averaged hemispheric wave temperature amplitude hindcast data from the same time period are in agreement with the AVHRR data. Our results show that ice cloud formation in mountain waves cannot explain how at least three large scale NAT clouds were formed in the stratosphere in early December 1999.

Surface Reflectance of Mars Observed by CRISM-MRO: 1. Multi-angle Approach for Retrieval of Surface Reflectance from CRISM Observations (mars-reco)

This article addresses the correction for aerosol effects in near-simultaneous multiangle observations acquired by the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) aboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. In the targeted mode, CRISM senses the surface of Mars using 11 viewing angles, which allow it to provide unique information on the scattering properties of surface materials. In order to retrieve these data, however, appropriate strategies must be used to compensate the signal sensed by CRISM for aerosol contribution. This correction is particularly challenging as the photometric curve of these suspended particles is often correlated with the also anisotropic photometric curve of materials at the surface. This article puts forward an innovative radiative transfer based method named Multi-angle Approach for Retrieval of Surface Reflectance from CRISM Observations (MARS-ReCO). The proposed method retrieves photometric curves of surface materials in reflectance units after removing aerosol contribution. MARS-ReCO represents a substantial improvement regarding previous techniques as it takes into consideration the anisotropy of the surface, thus providing more realistic surface products. Furthermore, MARS-ReCO is fast and provides error bars on the retrieved surface reflectance. The validity and accuracy of MARS-ReCO is explored in a sensitivity analysis based on realistic synthetic data. According to experiments, MARS-ReCO provides accurate results (up to 10 reflectance error) under favorable acquisition conditions. In the companion article, photometric properties of Martian materials are retrieved using MARS-ReCO and validated using in situ measurements acquired during the Mars Exploration Rovers mission.
