NASA Glenn Research Center Experience with LENR Phenomenon

Since 1989 NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) has performed some small-scale limited experiments that show evidence of effects claimed by some to be evidence of Low Energy Nuclear Reactions (LENR). The research at GRC has involved observations and work on measurement techniques for observing the temperature effects in reactions of isotopes of hydrogen with palladium hydrides. The various experiments performed involved loading Pd with gaseous H2 and D2, and exposing Pd thin films to multi-bubble sonoluminescence in regular and deuterated water. An overview of these experiments and their results will be presented.

Sniffer used as portable hydrogen leak detector

Sniffer type portable monitor detects hydrogen in air, oxygen, nitrogen, or helium. It indicates the presence of hydrogen in contact with activated palladium black by a change in color of a thermochromic paint, and indicates the quantity of hydrogen by a sensor probe and continuous readout.

Device provides controlled gas leaks

Modified palladium leak device provides a controlled release /leak/ of very small quantities of gas at low or medium pressures. It has no moving parts, requires less than 5 watts to operate, and is capable of releasing the gas either continuously or in pulses at adjustable flow rates.

New electrocatalysts for hydrogen-oxygen fuel cells

Platinum-silver, palladium-gold, and platinum-gold alloys serve as oxygen reduction catalysts in high-current-density cells. Catalysts were tested on polytetrafluoroethylene-bonded cathodes and a hydrogen anode at an operating cell temperature of 80 degrees C.

Concept for a gas operated actuator

Palladium valve, permeable to hydrogen gas, is used to fill a bellows mechanism from a source of hydrogen to power an actuator. A similar valve provides retraction. The valves have no moving parts and are heat operated. One limitation on the use of this actuator is discussed.

Hydrogen-oxygen powered internal combustion engine

Hydrogen at 300 psi and oxygen at 800 psi are injected sequentially into the combustion chamber to form hydrogen-rich mixture. This mode of injection eliminates difficulties of preignition, detonation, etc., encountered with carburated, spark-ignited, hydrogen-air mixtures. Ignition at startup is by means of a palladium catalyst.

Hydrogen eliminator

Vented hydrogen is converted into water by mixing hydrogen with sufficient air to ensure that a flame cannot be maintained and then passing it through a reactor containing palladium catalyst; reaction takes place at relatively low temperature. Device may have wide range of applications for air purification.
