Interfacial Electromechanics Predicts Phase Behavior of 2D Hybrid Halide Perovskites

Quasi-two-dimensional (2D) mixed-cation hybrid halide perovskites (A' 2 A N–1 M N X 3N+1 ; A' = large organic molecule with cationic group, A = [Cs + , CH 3 NH 3 + , HC(NH 2 ) 2 + ], M = [Pb, Sn, Ge], X = [I – , Br – , Cl – ]) have rapidly emerged as candidates to improve the structural stability and device lifetime of 3D perovskite semiconductor devices under operating conditions. The addition of the large A' cation to the traditional AMX 3 structure introduces several synthetic degrees of freedom and breaks M–X bonds, giving rise to peculiar critical phase behavior in the phase space of these complex materials. In this work, we propose a thermodynamic model parametrized by first-principles calculations to generate the phase diagram of 2D and quasi-2D perovskites (q-2DPKs) based on the mechanics and electrostatics of the interface between the A' cations and the metal halide octahedral network. Focusing on the most commonly studied methylammonium lead iodide system where A' is n-butylammonium (BA; CH 3 (CH 2 ) 3 NH 3 + ), we find that the apparent difficulty in synthesizing phase-pure samples with a stoichiometric index N > 5 can be attributed to the energetic competition between repulsion of opposing interfacial dipole layers and mechanical relaxation induced by interfacial stress. Our model shows quantitative agreement with experimental observations of the maximum phase-pure stoichiometric index (N crit ) and explains the nonmonotonic evolution of the lattice parameters with increasing stoichiometric index (N). This model is generalizable to the entire family of q-2DPKs and can guide the design of photovoltaic and optical materials that combine the structural stability of the q-2DPKs while retaining the charge carrier properties of their 3D counterparts.

Techno-economic analysis of the impact of dynamic electricity prices on solar penetration in a smart grid environment with distributed energy storage

This study investigates the technical and economic feasibility of using high levels of solar energy penetration up to 400 MW into a smart grid system of 60,000 smart houses. A novel non-cooperative Stackelberg game is introduced that incorporates the profitability of the supply-side and helps in solving problems related to overgeneration and photovoltaic curtailment. The non-cooperative game is intended to find the optimal dynamic prices that would leverage distributed storage through the demand-side to stabilize the power grid operation. Ten cases are studied with five photovoltaic plant sizes and two battery designs. Here, a novel quantitative analysis of high levels of solar penetration as a percentage of the total electricity demand is introduced to evaluate the technical feasibility of the studied cases. To evaluate the economic viability of the proposed smart grid system, four metrics were used: the levelized cost of energy, the levelized cost of storage, the payback period, and the net present value. Two out of ten studied cases were concluded to be the most promising cases, one with a solar photovoltaic plant size of 200 MW and the other with 300 MW. The case with 300 MW solar plant is preferred as it paves the way for more solar energy deployment with a solar penetration percentage up to 67.78%. This case had a payback period of 10.72 years and a net present value of $\$51.44$ M for the solar plant and a payback period of 12.06 years and a net present value of $\$40.75$ M for the demand-side.

Machine Learning-Assisted Stability Boundary Determination of Multiport Autonomous Reconfigurable Solar Power Plants

The multiport autonomous reconfigurable solar (MARS) power plant is a promising solution to integrate renewable resources and energy storage systems into the alternating current (ac) power grid and an high-voltage direct current (HVdc) link. In the MARS system, various input power sources are connected to the individual submodules (SMs) through direct current (dc)–dc converters. However, the presence of external power sources can result in unbalanced capacitor voltages of SMs, thereby violating stability constraints under multiple/diverse operating conditions. This article aims to address the gap by accurately determining the stability boundary of the MARS system. As such, a novel machine learning (ML)-assisted energy balancing control (EBC) criterion is proposed. Further, in conjunction with a refined EBC, this approach ensures balanced capacitor voltages across various types of SMs, significantly enhancing the overall system efficiency. The proposed EBC criterion effectively controls EBC activation and deactivation, achieving remarkable accuracy. Both power systems computer aided design (PSCAD)/electromagnetic transients including direct current (EMTDC) simulations and control hardware-in-the-loop (cHIL) tests are conducted to validate the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed method. By combining the EBC and ML-assisted EBC criterion, efficient energy management is achieved for systems featuring multiple input power sources, such as MARS. This approach enables the system to fully exploit its potential across an expanded operational range while upholding high-efficiency standards.

High-Efficiency Modular SiC-based Power-Converter for Flexible-CHP Systems with Stability-Enhanced Grid-Support Functions

This project seeks to develop a modular, scalable MV power converter featuring stability-enhanced grid-support functions for future grid-interface applications in flexible combined heat and power (F-CHP) cogeneration plants, being fully compliant with the IEEE Standard 1547, category B—for operation in local areas with high aggregated distributed energy resource (DER) penetration, and also with the IEEE standard for the specification of microgrid controllers, namely IEEE Std 2030.7, with the goal to enable F-CHP systems for both microgrid and standalone applications. Further, the proposed converter will use a modular circuit topology, the MMC, which is scalable both in voltage and current by interconnecting power-cell building blocks, thus flexibly suiting the needs of F-CHP systems in the 1–20 MWe range. Furthermore, the use of 10 kV SiC MOSFET devices will minimize the number of power-cells needed to operate in 2–13.8 kV MV distribution systems, but more importantly, they will render feasible a power conversion efficiency > 98 %, and a power density > 10 kW/l. This is highly relevant given that these are two key performance metrics that will further increase the value of F-CHP systems by shortening the time required to recover their investment costs.

Suppressed phase segregation for triple-junction perovskite solar cells

The tunable band gaps and facile fabrication of perovskites make them attractive for multi-junction photovoltaics. However, light-induced phase segregation limits their efficiency and stability: this occurs in wide band gap (> 1.65 eV) I/Br mixed perovskite absorbers, and becomes even more acute in the top cells of triple-junction solar photovoltaics that requires a fully 2.0 eV band gap absorber. We report herein that lattice distortion in I/Br mixed perovskites is correlated with the suppression of phase segregation, generating an increased ion migration energy barrier arising from the decreased average interatomic distance between A-site cation and iodide. Using a ~2.0 eV Rb/Cs mixed-cation inorganic perovskite with large lattice distortion in the top subcell, we fabricated all-perovskite triple-junction solar cells and achieved an efficiency of 24.3% (23.3% certified quasi-steady-state efficiency) with an open-circuit voltage of 3.21 V. This is, to our knowledge, the first reported certified efficiency for perovskite-based triple-junction solar cells. The triple-junction devices retain 80% of their initial efficiency following 420 hours of operation at the maximum power point.

Single crystal purification reduces trace impurities in halide perovskite precursors, alters perovskite thin film performance, and improves phase stability

Impurities present in commercially available halide perovskite precursors are known to affect photovoltaic performance. Here, we employ bulk single crystal growth of FAPbI 3 using solvent orthogonality induced crystallization (SONIC) to remove a broad set of extrinsic impurities from commercially available halide perovskite precursors, as verified by detailed chemical analysis. Following SONIC purification, FAPbI 3 films made from PbI 2 of originally low purity (99%) and high purity (99.99%) show improved phase purity and stability under light and heat relative to films made from raw precursors or precursors purified via retrograde powder crystallization (RPC) in 2-methoxyethanol, a method commonly utilized in recent reports of the highest-efficiency perovskite solar cells. In conclusion, single-crystal purification of precursors improves film stability under operational stressors, and the large enhancements in material purity provide a cleaner slate for improved isolation of compositional and additive effects on perovskite phase stability.

Benzimidazole Based Hole‐Transporting Materials for High‐performance Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract Interfaces play a decisive role in perovskite solar cells’ power conversion efficiency and their long‐term durability. Small‐molecule hole‐transporting materials (HTMs) have grabbed enormous attention due to their structural flexibility, material properties, and stabilities, allowing for improved operational durability in perovskite photovoltaics. This study synthesizes and investigates a new class of benzimidazole‐based small molecules, named YJS001 and YJS003 , serving as the HTMs to enable high‐efficiency mixed‐cation mixed‐halide perovskite solar cells. The benzimidazole‐based materials are dopant‐free HTMs composed of donor and acceptor building blocks that are designed to engineer the energy level alignment near the HTM/perovskite interface. Mixed‐cation mixed‐halide perovskites can be grown uniformly on both HTMs with large crystalline grains. It is discovered that the donor‐rich YJS003 ‐based solar cell exhibits a high open‐circuit voltage of 1.09 V with a champion power conversion efficiency of over 20%. Power‐dependent current–voltage characteristics of the solar cells are analyzed, from which the high performance of YJS003's excellent hole mobility and well‐aligned energy level is attributed. This work introduces a new class of benzimidazole‐based small molecules as HTMs, that paves the path for dopant free interface material development for commercialization of perovskite solar cells.

Rapid Open-Air Fabrication of Perovskite Solar Modules

We report on the open-air fabrication of perovskite solar modules with key advances including scalable large-area spray deposition, new monolithic integration scribing techniques, advanced photoluminescence characterization, and reproducible high-throughput manufacturability. Perovskite deposition with linear speeds of 12 m/min without a post-anneal are demonstrated with improved device performance, luminescent yield and >10X carrier lifetimes. Manufacturability using monolithic integration of series-connected modules is accomplished with a new indirect fiber laser ablation scribing method. A stable cell and module power output of 18.0% and 15.5%, respectively, was achieved with a subcell V oc > 1.06V. A comprehensive supporting technoeconomic analysis details the entire in-line manufacturing process from the glass substrate to the junction box of the encapsulated module. Here, the module manufacturing cost, balance of system costs and levelized cost of energy for a range of module efficiencies and lifetimes provides insights for the necessary tool speeds, efficiencies, and lifetimes for utility-scale energy generation.

Pseudo-halide anion engineering for efficient quasi-2D Ruddlesden-Popper tin perovskite solar cells

Quasi-two-dimensional (2D) organic-inorganic hybrid tin perovskites have emerged as promising alternatives to lead-based perovskites in thin-film photovoltaics because of their reduced toxicity and improved stability. However, the undesired small n-value 2D phases and disordered crystal orientation enormously restrict the efficiency of quasi-2D tin perovskite solar cells (PSCs) due to uncontrollable nucleation and crystal growth processes. Here, we propose a mixed pseudo-halide anion engineering approach by using acetate (Ac - ) and tetrafluoroborate (BF 4 - ) anions to make quasi-2D Ruddlesden-Popper perovskites with a target formula of PEA 2 FA 4 Sn 5 I 16 . We find that the mixed Ac - and BF 4 - anions can not only promote homogeneously distributed PEA + cations in the precursor by effectively breaking the PEA + ···PEA + stacking but also retard the crystallization process by coordinating with unbonded SnI 2 , thereby, significantly reducing small n-value 2D phases, improving the crystal orientation, and suppressing the Sn 2+ oxidation. The resulting PSC exhibits up to 9% power conversion efficiency and 400 h stability.

Tin–Lead Alloying for Efficient and Stable All-Inorganic Perovskite Solar Cells

Cesium containing all-inorganic perovskites have received considerable interest in photovoltaics research because of their potential for improved stability compared to their organic-inorganic hybrid counterparts. However, the inorganic perovskites studied thus far still suffer from lower power conversion efficiency and long-term instability, due to an unfavorable bandgap and either phase instability or air-sensitivity. Herein, A strategy to mitigate these concerns is investigated by alloying tin and lead on the B site to form tin-lead alloyed low-bandgap (~1.34 eV) inorganic CsSn 0.3 Pb 0.7 I 3 perovskites. Solar cells made using this material in an inverted full-structured architecture with a PEDOT:PSS hole transport materials (HTM) attain power conversion efficiency (PCE) up to 9.41% (stabilized PCE 7.23%). Furthermore, a simple HTM-free device without PEDOT:PSS layer is demonstrated more stable than the full-structured device and exhibits a PCE of 7.60% (stabilized PCE 7.31%) – the highest efficiency to date for an inorganic perovskite with a bandgap below 1.40 eV. This simplified device structure shows good reproducibility and stability. Finally, this work provides a possible route for fabricating low-cost, high stability devices with competitive efficiencies.

Moisture-Induced Structural Degradation in Methylammonium Lead Iodide Perovskite Thin Films

Methylammonium lead iodide (CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 , MAPbI 3 ) belongs to the group of organic–inorganic halide perovskites (OIHPs) that exhibit exceptional electrical and optical behavior suitable for photovoltaic applications. However, improving its structural and chemical stability and robustness remains a challenge for OIHPs to be considered a feasible active material in optoelectronic devices. This is due to the fact that this material is very susceptible to degrade under various intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the mechanisms through which MAPbI 3 undergoes chemical degradation under operating conditions such as a relatively humid environment. We present the structural characteristics of MAPbI 3 under working conditions that suggest the routes of phase segregation as a result of exposing to highly moist media. We use dark pulse discharge behavior and current–voltage (I–V) variations of MAPbI 3 under different moisture levels to investigate the nature of structural degradation in OIHPs. Here we show that while relatively lower levels of humidity (~60% RH) have a limited impact on the structural stability of MAPbI 3 , exposure to higher levels of moisture (~100% RH) results in the formation of PbI 2 and aqueous CH 3 NH 3 I, which fundamentally change the charge transport characteristics in MAPbI 3 . Our findings explain the ongoing debate on the presence of a threshold for the humidity that triggers irreversible structural transformation and leads to full degradation of MAPbI 3 .

Perspectives of Open-Air Processing to Enable Perovskite Solar Cell Manufacturing

We report high throughput open-air processing techniques for the scalable production of all device and barrier layers for perovskite photovoltaics (PV). This work discusses and resolves some of the most formidable barriers to module-level scaling that the perovskite community has been facing. Our advanced technoeconomic manufacturing analysis indicates that vacuum-based processes with high capital expenditures (CapEx) and low throughputs dominate the cost of production. Open-air fabrication methods offer low CapEx routes to manufacturing, but achieving reproducibility in ambient conditions with varying relative humidity has been a persistent challenge. The use of rapid processing methods with plasma curing to convert films from the solution-state enables reproducibility, moisture immunity, and the highest perovskite PV efficiency produced in open-air. These methods are readily translatable to in-line processing where layers are sequentially deposited without the need for lengthy post-annealing steps that reduce throughput and involve additional equipment. Significant progress is demonstrated in reduced manufacturing costs as perovskites contend as a commercially viable next-generation thin film PV technology.

Solvent-mediated carboxylic acid diammonium spacer for synthesizing FA-based 2D Dion–Jacobson perovskites toward efficient solar cells

Two-dimensional (2D) perovskites are promising for photovoltaic applications due to their outstanding optical properties and better environmental stability compared to three-dimensional (3D) perovskites. Unlike 2D Ruddlesden–Popper (RP) perovskites, which use monovalent ammonium spacers, Dion–Jacobson (DJ) perovskites employ divalent organic spacers that enhance structural stability by mitigating weak van der Waals interactions. However, the random phase distribution and disorder crystal orientation in 2D DJ perovskites create deep quantum wells, hindering charge transfer and reducing short-circuit current density (J SC ) and overall photovoltaic performance. This study introduces an organic diammonium, 1,4-butanediamine diacetate (BDAAc 2 ), to replace the traditional halide spacer 1,4-butanediamine iodide (BDADI 2 ). This substitution regulates perovskites crystallization dynamics, reducing compositional disorder and random phase distribution, thus improving the quality of the perovskite films. The robust coordination interactions between BDAAc 2 and the perovskite inorganic framework lead to an ordered [PbX 6 ] 4− arrangement, suppressing the formation of complex intermediate phases and significantly enhancing δ phase crystallinity in the intermediate film. This results in a high yield of high-quality α phase. Consequently, the resulting 2D DJ perovskite solar cells based on BDAFA 3 Pb 4 (I 0.9 Br 0.1 ) 13 achieve a higher power conversion efficiency of 16.41% and an elevated J SC of 20.46 mA cm −2 .

Model Predictive Control-Based Dual-Mode Operation of an Energy-Stored Quasi-Z-Source Photovoltaic Power System

The energy-stored quasi-Z-source inverter (ES-qZSI) has attracted much attention for photovoltaic (PV) power generations, due to its capability to stabilize the PV power fluctuations with simple structure and other advantages of Z-source inverter. The improved dual-mode (DM) ES-qZSI is able to support all-weather operation even at night or cloudy days when PV power is extremely low. However, the traditional proportional–integral (PI) based control suffers from complicated controller design and poor dynamic response during mode transition, due to two sets of PI control required for the daytime and night operation modes. In order to overcome that, here in this article, we propose a model predictive control strategy for the DM-ES-qZSI PV power system. The system predictive models in both day and night operating modes are derived. The control strategy is disclosed to ensure high performance of the system, through calling the predictive models and defined cost functions of the two modes within a single control loop. Simulation and experiment are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.

Best Practices Handbook for the Collection and Use of Solar Resource Data for Solar Energy Applications: Fourth Edition

As the world increasingly seeks low-carbon energy solutions, solar power emerges as the most abundant resource on our planet. However, the challenge of effectively harnessing this energy is crucial in the coming years. Solar energy applications such as photovoltaics, solar heating and cooling, and concentrating solar power use different technologies to capitalize on sunlight. Each system has unique capabilities and requirements, underscoring the need for reliable information about solar resources across diverse installations, from residential rooftops to large-scale power plants. This is especially important for substantial projects, often exceeding $1 billion in construction costs. Before embarking on such ventures, it is imperative to obtain accurate data concerning solar resource quality and reliability at specific sites. Developers require detailed historical information, including seasonal, daily, hourly, and, ideally, subhourly variability to effectively predict a power plant's annual performance. Without these vital data, financial analyses fall short. Moreover, with the growing adoption of distributed photovoltaics, integrating these generation sources becomes critical to maintaining grid reliability and stability. By accurately forecasting generation patterns, utilities and system operators can facilitate greater integration of solar energy, thus ensuring the operational stability of the grid. The complexity and importance of these issues have prompted the foremost experts in the field to collaborate under the auspices of the International Energy Agency's (IEA's) Photovoltaic Power Systems Programme (PVPS) Task 16 to publish this handbook, which summarizes state-of-the-art information about all these topics. The efforts focus on providing reliable data and insights that can help shape our investments in solar energy and drive a sustainable future.
