Energetics and structural properties of twist grain boundaries in Cu

Structural and energetics properties of atoms near a grain boundary are of great importance from theoretical and experimental standpoints. From various experimental work it is concluded that diffusion at low temperatures at polycrystalline materials take place near grain boundary. Experimental and theoretical results also indicate changes of up to 70 percent in physical properties near a grain boundary. The Embedded Atom Method (EAM) calculations on structural properties of Au twist grain boundaries are in quite good agreement with their experimental counterparts. The EAM is believed to predict reliable values for the single vacancy formation energy as well as migration energy. However, it is not clear whether the EAM functions which are fitted to the bulk properties of a perfect crystalline solid can produce reliable results on grain boundaries. One of the objectives of this work is to construct the EAM functions for Cu and use them in conjunction with the molecular static simulation to study structures and energetics of atoms near twist grain boundaries in Cu. This provides tests of the EAM functions near a grain boundary. In particular, we determine structure, single vacancy formation energy, migration energy, single vacancy activation energy, and interlayer spacing as a function of distance from grain boundary. Our results are compared with the available experimental and theoretical results from grain boundaries and bulk.

Float-Zone Growth of Gel-xSix (x ? 10 at .%) Single Crystals: Influence of Thermocapillary and Solutocapillary Convection

Gel-xSix (x ? 10 at.%) single crystals have been grown with the float-zone technique applied within a monoellipsoid mirror furnace. The feed crystal consisted of synthesized GeO.95siO.05 polycrystalline material. Two Boron-doped (much much more than 1-2 (raised dot) 1017 at/cm3) crystals were grown under identical conditions using <100> Ge seeds. One Ge:Ga-doped (much much more than 1018 at/cm3) reference crystal was also grown in the same furnace. Compositional profiles were measured with an energy dispersive analysis by X-ray (EDAX). The maximum silicon concentration attained was 10 at.%. Micrographs of the etched crystals show sharp changes in interface curvature at the crystal edges. These are considered to be caused by solutal Marangoni convection, whose strength is assumed to be a direct function of silicon concentration, Theoretical considerations show that the flow direction, velocity, and strength varies significantly from a solutal Marangoni convection regime directly in front of the solid-liquid interface to a thermal Marangoni convection regime within the bulk melt.

Empirical Study of the Multiaxial, Thermomechanical Behavior of NiTiHf Shape Memory Alloys

An empirical study was conducted to characterize the multiaxial, thermomechanical responses of new high temperature NiTiHf alloys. The experimentation included loading thin walled tube Ni(sub 50.3)Ti(sub 29.7)Hf(sub 20) alloy samples along both proportional and nonproportional axial-torsion paths at different temperatures while measuring surface strains using stereo digital image correlation. A Ni(sub 50.3)Ti(sub 33.7)Hf(sub 16) alloy was also studied in tension and compression to document the effect of slightly depleting the Hf content on the constitutive responses of NiTiHf alloys. Samples of both alloys were made from nearly texture free polycrystalline material processed by hot extrusion. Analysis of the data shows that very small changes in composition significantly alter NiTiHf alloy properties, as the austenite finish (Af) temperature of the 16-at Hf alloy was found to be approximately 60 C less than the 20-at Hf alloy (approximately 120 C vs. 180 C). In addition, the 16-at Hf alloy exhibited smaller compressive transformation strains (2 vs. 2.5 percent). Multi-axial characterization of the 20-at % Hf alloy showed that while the random polycrystal transformation strains in tension (4 percent) and compression (2.5 percent) are modest in comparison with binary NiTi (6 percent, 4 percent), the torsion performance is superior (7 vs. 4 shear strain width to the pseudoelastic plateau).

Attribution of heterogeneous stress distributions in low-grain polycrystals under conditions leading to damage

In high-purity polycrystalline metallic materials, voids tend to favor grain boundaries as nucleation sites due to the elevated stress states produced by granular interactions and the weakened grain boundary from the relative atomic disorder. To quantify the key factors of this elevated stress state, simple compression of a small multi-grain cylinder of body-centered cubic tantalum was simulated using a single crystal plasticity model that incorporates non-Schmid effects. Four increasingly complex synthetic microstructures were created to tractably incorporate grain boundary interactions, and a statistically significant number of combinations were performed by varying the initial crystallographic orientations of the microstructure. Most of these simulations produce the maximum von Mises stress on a grain boundary and less frequently at the multi-grain junctions. To build a statistical model for the maximum von Mises stress at the grain boundary, physically based features that could contribute to the elevated stress state were selected. Then, a learning algorithm based on information theory was used to identify which of these features contributed the most information to the data set. The identified features include a grain’s propensity to accommodate both elastic and plastic deformations and their directional components. The misalignment of the direction of each grain’s mechanical response was found to be strongly correlated to the magnitude of the stress near the grain boundary. For all of the synthetic microstructures, the statistical models produce a residual distribution that is nearly Gaussian with a variance of, at most, 10% of the prior distribution. The successful performance of the statistical model implies the correct identification of the physical features that cause severe stress localization in polycrystalline materials. The statistical models constructed here can be used to formulate a physically motivated void nucleation model which is sensitive to a microstructure’s propensity to produce elevated stress states. As a result, these statistical models also enable the design of material microstructures, in which the crystallographic orientation is chosen to resist void nucleation.

Single-Crystal Springs For Accelerometers

Thermal noise reduced, enabling use of smaller proof masses. Spring-and-mass accelerometers in which springs made of single-crystal material being developed. In spring-and-mass accelerometer, proof mass attached to one end of spring, and acceleration of object at other end of spring measured in terms of deflection of spring, provided frequency spectrum of acceleration lies well below resonant frequency of spring-and-proof-mass system. Use of single-crystal spring materials instead of such polycrystalline spring materials as ordinary metals makes possible to construct highly sensitive accelerometers (including seismometers) with small proof masses.

Synthesis of inter‐lanthanide sesquioxides LnLn'O 3 by polymeric steric entrapment

Lanthanide oxides are well known in the fields of optical, electronic, and magnetic materials. Even so, there are many application spaces yet to be explored. Previous modeling of inter-lanthanide sesquioxides, in which the compound contains two lanthanide cations, predicts the lowest level energy structure as a function of chemistry, which this work seeks to verify. Three materials of interest, ErLuO 3 , LaLuO 3 , and SmLuO 3 , were synthesized for the first time by the polymeric steric entrapment (PSE) method. X-ray diffraction confirms the stable state predictions of ErLuO 3 and SmLuO 3 forming a bixbyite type structure and LaLuO 3 forming a perovskite type structure. This work demonstrates PSE as a viable and reliable route toward the synthesis of these unique materials.

Enabling resonant ultrasound spectroscopy in high magnetic fields

Resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS) is a powerful method to determine elastic constants with high accuracy and precision from a single measurement of the mechanical resonances of a sample. Conventionally, the quantitative extraction of elastic moduli with RUS assumes free boundary conditions which can often lead to the adoption of unstable sample positioning between ultrasonic transducers that is incompatible with extreme environments like high magnetic fields. We show that, under specific conditions, introducing a small amount of adhesive between a RUS sample and ultrasonic transducers introduces a perturbation to the free resonance condition which can be accounted for by a simple model. This means elastic constants can be determined to within the uncertainty of conventional RUS, but with significant improvements including sample stability and control of sample orientation. We demonstrate the efficacy of this approach with measurements on a range of materials including room temperature measurements on polycrystalline metals, temperature-dependent measurements of the structural phase transition in strontium titanate single crystals, and magnetic field-dependent measurements of magnetic phase transitions in gadolinium polycrystals up to 14 T.

Effect of Nuclear Radiation on Materials at Cryogenic Temperatures

The tensile properties for 33 polycrystalline structural materials including aluminum, titanium, nickel and iron alloys were obtained at -256.5 C (30 deg R) after irradiation exposure at this temperature to 10(exp 17) nvt (E greater than 0.5 Mev), at -256.5 C without previous irradiation, and at approximately 27 C (540 deg R) without previous irradiation. The data were evaluated statistically to permit identification of cryogenic effects and nuclear-cryogenic effects. A number of conclusions were drawn regarding suitability of certain of the materials for use in nuclear-cryogenic applications and regarding the need for further investigation.

The mechanism of erosion of metallic materials under cavitation attack

The mean depth of penetration rates (MDPRs) of eight polycrystalline metallic materials, Al 6061-T6, Cu, brass, phosphor bronze, Ni, Fe, Mo, and Ti-5Al-2.5Sn exposed to cavitation attack in a viscous mineral oil with a 20 kHz ultrasonic oscillator vibrating at 50 micron amplitude are reported. The titanium alloy followed by molybdenum have large incubation periods and small MDPRs. The incubation periods correlate linearly with the inverse of hardness and the average MDPRs correlate linearly with the inverse of tensile strength of materials. The linear relationships yield better statistical parameters than geometric and exponential relationships. The surface roughness and the ratio of pit depth to pit width (h/a) increase with the duration of cavitation attack. The ratio h/a varies from 0.1 to 0.8 for different materials. Recent investigations (20) using scanning electron microscopy to study deformation and pit formation features are briefly reviewed. Investigations with single crystals indicate that the geometry of pits and erosion are dependent on their orientation.

Silicon Research and Technology Workshop report

The materials, structures, processing, modeling and measurements of high efficiency silicon solar cells were surveyed. In the materials area, highlights included: (1) the possibility of improving cell voltages by reducing minority carrier mobilities in critical regions of the solar cells; (2) the need for and possibility of lowering the surface recombination velocity for improvement of open circuit voltage in shallow junction cells; (3) the present need for improved lifetime in high resistivity cells; and (4) the potential for new materials such as polycrystalline or dendritic web material to perform well at end of life in a radiation environment. In the area of structures, distinction was made between those for terrestrial use and those that would survive radiation environments. Areas such as epitaxial growth and laser or elctron beam annealing (and diffusion) were proposed as having certain advantages over more conventional techniques.

Stability of the first-order character of phase transition in HoCo 2

HoCo 2 exhibits a giant magnetocaloric (MC) effect at its first-order magnetostructural phase transition around 77 K, and understanding the thermodynamic nature of this transition in response to external magnetic fields is crucial for its MC applications. In this study, we present a comprehensive investigation of specific heat and magnetization measurements of HoCo 2 under varying magnetic fields. The specific heat measurements qualitatively indicate a transformation from first- to second-order behavior of this phase transition at higher magnetic fields. However, analysis of the power-law dependence of the magnetic entropy change (Δ S M ∝H n ) and the breakdown of universal behavior in the temperature dependence of Δ S M suggest that the first-order nature remains intact, even up to 7 T. This stability of the first-order nature is further manifested through the distinctive non-linear behavior of modified Arrott plots, with a negative slope in the 6–7 T range.

Multiscale structural analysis of polymorphic phase boundaries in doped antiferroelectric sodium niobate

In the current work, we have performed multiscale structural analysis of a Pb-free sodium niobate-based smart system, i.e., 0.9⁢NaNbO 3 –0.1⁢Ba 0.9 ⁢Ca 0.1 ⁢TiO 3 (NN-10BCT) reported earlier for its high ferroelectric response. We have investigated the temperature-dependent evolution of crystal structure at long, medium, and short ranges using synchrotron x-ray diffraction (SXRD), Raman scattering, and pair distribution function(PDF) techniques in conjunction with dielectric studies. Temperature-dependent synchrotron x-ray diffraction data combined with dielectric analysis suggest two unique polymorphic phase boundaries (PPB) with two coexisting ferroelectric phases stable in the wide temperature ranges. These PPBs are stable in different regions viz. (i) cryogenic temperatures with coexisting R3c and Pmc⁢2 1 phases (ii) vicinity of room temperatures with coexisting Pmc⁢2 1 and Amm2 phases. In contrast to the conclusions drawn from SXRD, PDF reveals structures having lower symmetry (with coexisting Cc+ Pmc2 1 phases at 1.7 ≤r≤ 20 Å) at short ranges for these PPBs. In conclusion, the presence of different long- and short-range symmetries (accommodating tilt-oriented ferroelectric phases) in the unique polymorphic phase boundaries makes them thermally stable and advantageous for technological applications.

Nucleation and growth of polar clusters with in-phase tilts into a long-range ferroelectric matrix in a sodium niobate based complex relaxor

In this study, we have investigated the temperature dependence of atomic ordering at multiple length scales in a lead-free sodium niobate-based relaxor, i.e., 0.75 NaNbO 3 -0.25 Ba 0.9⁢ Ca 0.1⁢ TiO 3 (NN-25BCT) via synchrotron x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and pair distribution function analysis. High-resolution synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction (SXRD) measurements reveal a ferroelectric phase transition in the relaxor ferroelectric NN-25BCT below the Vogel-Fulcher freezing temperature (𝑇 VF ≈ 270 K). In addition, SXRD analysis demonstrates the competition between in-phase octahedral tilting and ferroelectric order at the long-range scale using mode crystallography. On the other hand, Raman spectroscopic analysis provides evidence of polar ordering for 𝑇 > 𝑇 VF (with tetragonal symmetry) persisting up to the Burns temperature (𝑇 B ). Furthermore, pair distribution function (PDF) analysis reveals the presence of a polar antiferrodistortive tetragonal phase with 𝑃⁢4⁢𝑏𝑚 space group at short ranges throughout the studied temperatures (i.e., 110 K ≤ 𝑇 ≤500 K), irrespective of nonpolar long-range ordering above 𝑇 VF . Therefore, our measurements provide direct evidence for the presence of polar ordering at short ranges and their gradual transformation into long-range polar ordering using an integrated multiscale structural analysis. In conclusion, as a result of a transition from relaxor to a ferroelectric phase in the vicinity of room temperature, NN-25BCT can be exploited for applications in pyroelectric detectors, electrocaloric devices, and multilayered ceramic capacitors.

Boundary conditions at grain boundaries

Grain boundaries in polycrystalline semiconductor material are frequently idealized as surfaces possessing a characteristic surface recombination velocity. Minority carrier densities generated by external sources (electron beams, light, etc.) in polycrystalline p-n junctions must satisfy certain boundary conditions at these grain boundaries which will be derived. It will also be shown that a 'folding technique' introduced recently to deal with this problem is of limited value.

Quantitative assessment of selenium diffusion and passivation in CdSeTe solar cells probed by spatially resolved cathodoluminescence

The introduction of selenium in CdSeTe/CdTe solar cells has led to improved device performances attributed to the passivation of bulk defects. In this work, high-resolution cathodoluminescence experiments are performed on a series of CdSeTe/CdTe thin films with different Se concentrations to quantify the mechanisms and the passivation role of Se. We demonstrate a universal dependence between the Se concentration and the radiative efficiency and a ten-fold enhancement of the luminescence between CdTe and CdSe 0.4 Te 0.6 . Raw luminescence maps are converted into maps of the Se concentration, revealing its graded profile within the stack. We demonstrate the diffusion of Se along CdTe grain boundaries induced by the cadmium chloride annealing treatment and determine the diffusion coefficients, which are more than eight times higher at grain boundaries than in grain interiors. These results provide microscopic insights into the distribution of Se and its impact on the passivation of CdSeTe/CdTe solar cells.
