Bayesian optimization of PYTHIA 8 tunes

A new tune (set of model parameters) is found for the six most important parameters of the PYTHIA 8 final state parton shower and hadronization model using Bayesian optimization. The tune fits the Large Electron-Positron collider (LEPI) data from ALEPH better than the default tune in PYTHIA 8. To the best of our knowledge, we present the most comprehensive application of Bayesian optimization to the tuning of a parton shower and hadronization model using the LEPI data.

Antenna arrays for neutrino mass measurements with cyclotron radiation emission spectroscopy

Cyclotron Radiation Emission Spectroscopy (CRES) is a technique for precision measurements of kinetic energies of charged particles, pioneered by the Project 8 experiment to measure the neutrino mass using the tritium end-point method. It was recently employed for the first time to measure the molecular tritium spectrum and place a limit on the neutrino mass using a cubic-centimeter-scale detector. Future direct neutrino mass experiments are developing the technique to overcome the systematic and statistical limitations of current detectors. Here, this paper describes one such approach, namely the use of antenna arrays for CRES in free space. Phenomenology, detector design, simulation, and performance estimates are discussed, culminating with an example design with a projected sensitivity of 𝑚 𝛽 < ⁢0.04 eV/𝑐 2 . Prototype antenna array measurements are also shown for a demonstrator-scale setup as a benchmark for the simulation. By consolidating these results, this paper serves as a comprehensive reference for the development and performance of antenna arrays for CRES.

Ergodic Lagrangian dynamics in a superhero universe

We present a fictional scenario that, while undeniably whimsical, provides the foundation for a unique exercise in extended problem solving, physics analysis, and quantitative model development. Starting with the foundational premise of the Wild Cards shared-world superhero universe, we demonstrate how a variety of concepts appropriate to the advanced undergraduate level—ergodicity, functional analysis, Lagrangian mechanics, and the ever-important simplifying approximation—can be combined into a rich, coherent mathematical model. The goal of this case study is to develop a useful pedagogical exercise in exploring an open-ended research question that presents, at first glance, no clear path forward. Being both eclectic and lengthy, this exercise offers a unique way for students to apply their core physics and mathematics education. It is perhaps best used within a senior honors seminar or within a brief (e.g., January term) elective class.

Contamination analysis and monitoring

"Sterilization" is a term applied to any process or procedure that produces a condition of sterility. Sterility is an absolute concept and refers to the destruction or removal of all life. However, when sterility as an absolute concept is applied to the sterilization of space hardware, it ceases to be operational. Absolute proof of sterility of flight hardware is impossible. Hence, for an operational approach to certification of sterility of space hardware, it is necessary to apply the probability concept. The present report is concerned with the applicability of mathematics to predict the probability of achieving sterility in a complex space hardware system. As such, this approach is concerned with the manipulation of microbiological data rather than mathematical rigor.
