IDEF3 and IDEF4 automation system requirements document and system environment models

The requirements specification is provided for the IDEF3 and IDEF4 tools that provide automated support for IDEF3 and IDEF4 modeling. The IDEF3 method is a scenario driven process flow description capture method intended to be used by domain experts to represent the knowledge about how a particular system or process works. The IDEF3 method provides modes to represent both (1) Process Flow Description to capture the relationships between actions within the context of a specific scenario, and (2) Object State Transition to capture the allowable transitions of an object in the domain. The IDEF4 method provides a method for capturing the (1) Class Submodel or object hierarchy, (2) Method Submodel or the procedures associated with each classes of objects, and (3) the Dispath Matching or the relationships between the objects and methods in the object oriented design. The requirements specified describe the capabilities that a fully functional IDEF3 or IDEF4 automated tool should support.

Direct simulation with vibration-dissociation coupling

The majority of implementations of the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method of Bird do not account for vibration-dissociation coupling. Haas and Boyd have proposed the vibrationally-favored dissociation model to accomplish this task. This model requires measurements of induction distance to determine model constants. A more general expression has been derived that does not require any experimental input. The model is used to calculate one-dimensional shock waves in nitrogen and the flow past a lunar transfer vehicle (LTV). For the conditions considered in the simulation, the influence of vibration-dissociation coupling on heat transfer in the stagnation region of the LTV can be significant.

Object-oriented Approach to High-level Network Monitoring and Management

An absolute prerequisite for the management of large investigating methods to build high-level monitoring computer networks is the ability to measure their systems that are built on top of existing monitoring performance. Unless we monitor a system, we cannot tools. Due to the heterogeneous nature of the hope to manage and control its performance. In this underlying systems at NASA Langley Research Center, paper, we describe a network monitoring system that we use an object-oriented approach for the design, we are currently designing and implementing. Keeping, first, we use UML (Unified Modeling Language) to in mind the complexity of the task and the required model users' requirements. Second, we identify the flexibility for future changes, we use an object-oriented existing capabilities of the underlying monitoring design methodology. The system is built using the system. Third, we try to map the former with the latter. APIs offered by the HP OpenView system.

An Approach to Solving Enclosure Radiation Problems in A Multi-Physics Context

Thermal protection system analysis of complex features or damage sites can sometimes require modeling of high temperature enclosures. Implementing efficient and accurate view-factor algorithms required to model such problems is complex. The current work leverages the Non-equilibrium Radiation (NERO) software, which solves the radiation transport equation in a finite-volume scheme, to alleviating challenges often faced with view-factor calculations. By assuming heat transfer occurs only between grey bodies and that the medium is non-participating, computational cost of the method is significantly reduced. The enclosure physics are modeled through emitting and reflecting boundary conditions in NERO. The emitted radiative flux is dependent on the wall temperature which is a solution to the material response, obtained from Icarus, in this context. The Ares framework manages the time-advancement and exchange of the necessary data between the solvers. The surface energy balance is modified to account for the enclosure terms within the material response boundary condition. The methodology was verified against analytical solutions including radiating parallel plates, a hollow cylinder (shown in Fig. 1), and a hemisphere. Application of the methodology to inform the design of components of the Dragonfly system will be shown.

The earth's gravity field and ocean dynamics

An analysis of the signal-to-noise ratio of the best gravity field available shows that a basis exists for the recovery of the dominant parameters of the quasi-stationary sea surface topography. Results obtained from the analysis of GEOS-3 show that it is feasible to recover the quasi-stationary dynamic sea surface topography as a function of wavelength. The gravity field models required for synoptic ocean circulation modeling are less exacting in that constituents affecting radial components of orbital position need not be known through shorter wavelengths.

System design parameter study for Shuttle Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF)

SIRTF is a high-sensitivity, cooled astronomical telescope operating from 2 to 1000 microns. The techniques used in analyzing the sensitivity of the SIRTF system performance to several technical issues are presented. Lowering the telescope temperature to near 4K is found to produce margin in several areas. A refined observing requirements model relieves the hardware performance requirements, and identifies extended source size/observing strategy as an important system specification. Other major conclusions are presented.

The workshop on the Integration of Finite Element Modeling with Geometric Modeling was held on 12 May 1987. It was held to discuss the geometric modeling requirements of the finite element modeling process and to better understand the technical aspects of the integration of these two areas. The 11 papers are presented except for one for which only the abstract is given.

Integration of finite element modeling with solid modeling through a dynamic interface

Finite element modeling is dominated by geometric modeling type operations. Therefore, an effective interface to geometric modeling requires access to both the model and the modeling functionality used to create it. The use of a dynamic interface that addresses these needs through the use of boundary data structures and geometric operators is discussed.

Orbital transfer vehicle concept definition and system analysis study, 1985. Volume 3: System and program trades

The key system and program trade studies performed to arrive at a preferred Orbital Transfer Vehicle (OTV) system concept and evolutionary approach to the acquisition of the requisite capabilites is documented. These efforts were expanded to encompass a Space Transportation Architecture Study (STAS) mission model and recommended unmanned cargo vehicle. The most important factors affecting the results presented are the mission model requirements and selection criteria. The reason for conducting the OTV concept definition and system analyses study is to select a concept and acquisition approach that meets a delivery requirement reflected by the mission model.

Artificial Thickening of a Transonic Boundary Layer in the Presence of a Pressure Gradient Associated with a Boundary Layer Ingestion Concept

Boundary layer ingestion is an aeropropulsive concept associated with a propulsion airframe integration technique that integrates viscous aerodynamics into a propulsion system to achieve more efficient flight. The effectiveness of this concept is heavily dependent on how much of the boundary layer is being ingested into the propulsor. Scaling this concept for transonic wind tunnel testing is often plagued with blockage issues and requires a modification to the model dimensions such as fuselage length and diameter and wingspan. To simulate the boundary layer for these modified models requires a manipulation of the boundary layer height to achieve the appropriate ratio of boundary layer to propulsor inlet diameter or height. This paper will focus on 15 different transonic boundary layer manipulators to achieve varying turbulent boundary layer heights for a representative single-aisle transport utilizing Boundary Layer Ingestion.

Studying the Impact of IBR Modeling on the Commonly Applied Transmission Line Protective Elements

It is a well-accepted fact that detailed inverter-based resource (IBR) models are needed for electromagnetic transient (EMT) studies, especially for protection studies and protection designs. However, it is not clear which modeling aspects should be included in the EMT model to accurately represent the IBR fault responses. Therefore, this paper addresses this gap by evaluating the impact of key modeling aspects (DC source, inverter model, power control, current/voltage control, and current limiting) on the response of protective relay elements both qualitatively and quantitatively. Both grid-following (GFL) and grid-forming (GFM) IBR models are comprehensively evaluated through a simplified real-world transmission network by varying the IBR modeling aspects, fault locations, and types. The insights and findings from this paper will benefit the power system protection community because this work provides modeling requirements and guidelines for IBR modeling so that correct IBR models will be used for protection scheme settings design.

Estimating net rainfall, evaporation and water storage of a bare soil from sequential L-band emissivities

A general method to use a time series of L-band emissivities as an input to a hydrological model for continuously monitoring the net rainfall and evaporation as well as the water content over the entire soil profile is proposed. The model requires a sufficiently accurate and general relation between soil emissivity and surface moisture content. A model which requires the soil hydraulic properties as an additional input, but does not need any weather data was developed. The method is shown to be numerically consistent.

A Koopman-based residual modeling approach for the control of a soft robot arm

Soft robots are challenging to model and control due to their poorly defined kinematics and nonlinear dynamics. Recently, Koopman operator theory has been shown capable of constructing control-oriented soft robot models from data. However, building these models requires extensive data collection and they do not necessarily generalize well outside of the training observations. This paper presents a more data-efficient and generalizable approach to soft robot modeling that first identifies a physics-based Koopman model then supplements it with a data-driven residual Koopman model. The resulting combined model is linear and thus compatible with real-time model-based control techniques such as Model Predictive Control (MPC). The efficacy of the approach is demonstrated on several simulated systems and on a real soft robot arm, where it is shown to generate models that are more accurate than purely physics-based models and require less data to construct than purely data-driven models. Using a model-based controller, the soft arm is able to successfully track end effector trajectories, perform a pick-and-place task, and write on a dry-erase board, showcasing the applicability of this framework to increase the capabilities of soft robotic systems.

A survey of commercial object-oriented database management systems

The object-oriented data model is the culmination of over thirty years of database research. Initially, database research focused on the need to provide information in a consistent and efficient manner to the business community. Early data models such as the hierarchical model and the network model met the goal of consistent and efficient access to data and were substantial improvements over simple file mechanisms for storing and accessing data. However, these models required highly skilled programmers to provide access to the data. Consequently, in the early 70's E.F. Codd, an IBM research computer scientists, proposed a new data model based on the simple mathematical notion of the relation. This model is known as the Relational Model. In the relational model, data is represented in flat tables (or relations) which have no physical or internal links between them. The simplicity of this model fostered the development of powerful but relatively simple query languages that now made data directly accessible to the general database user. Except for large, multi-user database systems, a database professional was in general no longer necessary. Database professionals found that traditional data in the form of character data, dates, and numeric data were easily represented and managed via the relational model. Commercial relational database management systems proliferated and performance of relational databases improved dramatically. However, there was a growing community of potential database users whose needs were not met by the relational model. These users needed to store data with data types not available in the relational model and who required a far richer modelling environment than that provided by the relational model. Indeed, the complexity of the objects to be represented in the model mandated a new approach to database technology. The Object-Oriented Model was the result.

Fusion Neutron Generator

The proposed code, named FROG (Fusion neutron Generator) is built upon the open-source particle transport Monte Carlo toolkit Geant4. Geant4 provides C++ classes that can be leveraged to build application-specific codes dealing with the transport of particles through matter. Geant4-based codes are applied in high-energy particle physics experiments, medical applications, shielding, and space applications for example. The FROG code allows the user to define the geometry of a neutron converter device shaped as a hollow cylinder, where a neutron breeding material such as lithium deuteride (LiD) is cladded by two concentric cylinders. Such neutron converter is then placed inside a regular nuclear fission reactor, where thermal neutrons will react with the neutron breeder material (typically, Lithium 6), and through a series of reactions, will generate high-energy neutrons – neutrons whose kinetic energy are around 14 MeV. The hollowed central portion can hold a specimen that will be bombarded by high-energy neutrons created inside the neutron breeding material. Figuratively speaking, this type of device transforms neutrons from thermal (~0.625 eV) to fusion (~14 MeV) energies and is sometimes termed “fusion-to-thermal neutron converters” in the literature. The code consists of C++ source file compiled and linked to generate an executable. The user can select the dimensions of the converter (radius, length, and thickness of the breeder material), the breeder material type, the cladding material, and the specimen material that will be activated or irradiated. As input, the neutron flux for a specific location inside a reactor, for instance, positions in ATR, is required. As output, the code predicts the number of high-energy neutrons produced, the total neutron flux and fluence as well as its detailed spectrum. The physics involved in such device is very complex, as it requires modeling neutron transport, light-ion (tritons) transport, as well as fusion reactions. The Geant4 toolkit provides the required physical models.

Science and Observation Recommendations for Future NASA Carbon Cycle Research

Between October 2000 and June 2001, an Agency-wide planning, effort was organized by elements of NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) to define future research and technology development activities. This planning effort was conducted at the request of the Associate Administrator of the Office of Earth Science (Code Y), Dr. Ghassem Asrar, at NASA Headquarters (HQ). The primary points of contact were Dr. Mary Cleave, Deputy Associate Administrator for Advanced Planning at NASA HQ (Headquarters) and Dr. Charles McClain of the Office of Global Carbon Studies (Code 970.2) at GSFC. During this period, GSFC hosted three workshops to define the science requirements and objectives, the observational and modeling requirements to meet the science objectives, the technology development requirements, and a cost plan for both the science program and new flight projects that will be needed for new observations beyond the present or currently planned. The plan definition process was very intensive as HQ required the final presentation package by mid-June 2001. This deadline was met and the recommendations were ultimately refined and folded into a broader program plan, which also included climate modeling, aerosol observations, and science computing technology development, for contributing to the President's Climate Change Research Initiative. This technical memorandum outlines the process and recommendations made for cross-cutting carbon cycle research as presented in June. A separate NASA document outlines the budget profiles or cost analyses conducted as part of the planning effort.

Requirements for psychological models to support design: Towards ecological task analysis

Cognitive engineering is largely concerned with creating environmental designs to support skillful and effective human activity. A set of necessary conditions are proposed for psychological models capable of supporting this enterprise. An analysis of the psychological nature of the design product is used to identify a set of constraints that models must meet if they can usefully guide design. It is concluded that cognitive engineering requires models with resources for describing the integrated human-environment system, and that these models must be capable of describing the activities underlying fluent and effective interaction. These features are required in order to be able to predict the cognitive activity that will be required given various design concepts, and to design systems that promote the acquisition of fluent, skilled behavior. These necessary conditions suggest that an ecological approach can provide valuable resources for psychological modeling to support design. Relying heavily on concepts from Brunswik's and Gibson's ecological theories, ecological task analysis is proposed as a framework in which to predict the types of cognitive activity required to achieve productive behavior, and to suggest how interfaces can be manipulated to alleviate certain types of cognitive demands. The framework is described in terms, and illustrated with an example from the previous research on modeling skilled human-environment interaction.

Calibration of Airframe and Occupant Models for Two Full-Scale Rotorcraft Crash Tests

Two full-scale crash tests of an MD-500 helicopter were conducted in 2009 and 2010 at NASA Langley's Landing and Impact Research Facility in support of NASA s Subsonic Rotary Wing Crashworthiness Project. The first crash test was conducted to evaluate the performance of an externally mounted composite deployable energy absorber under combined impact conditions. In the second crash test, the energy absorber was removed to establish baseline loads that are regarded as severe but survivable. Accelerations and kinematic data collected from the crash tests were compared to a system integrated finite element model of the test article. Results from 19 accelerometers placed throughout the airframe were compared to finite element model responses. The model developed for the purposes of predicting acceleration responses from the first crash test was inadequate when evaluating more severe conditions seen in the second crash test. A newly developed model calibration approach that includes uncertainty estimation, parameter sensitivity, impact shape orthogonality, and numerical optimization was used to calibrate model results for the second full-scale crash test. This combination of heuristic and quantitative methods was used to identify modeling deficiencies, evaluate parameter importance, and propose required model changes. It is shown that the multi-dimensional calibration techniques presented here are particularly effective in identifying model adequacy. Acceleration results for the calibrated model were compared to test results and the original model results. There was a noticeable improvement in the pilot and co-pilot region, a slight improvement in the occupant model response, and an over-stiffening effect in the passenger region. This approach should be adopted early on, in combination with the building-block approaches that are customarily used, for model development and test planning guidance. Complete crash simulations with validated finite element models can be used to satisfy crash certification requirements, thereby reducing overall development costs.
