Solar Design/Install Labor Quantification (Cooperative Research and Development Final Report)

The goals of this project were to quantify the rate and/or total expected labor expenditure of engineers designing solar arrays and electricians installing solar across a spectrum of project sizes and configurations. Specifically, procuring and analyzing labor data from solar engineering firms relating to the amount of time it takes an engineer to design a solar project, the amount of time it takes an engineer to perform a wiring or stringing design, the amount of time it takes an electrician to install a solar project and the amount of time it takes electricians to install the strings of a solar array. Then these details could be analyzed to evaluate labor intensity for solar design/installation. These goals were unable to be completed because the participant was unable to collect the necessary data for analysis.

Simulate Wind Loading on RUTE SunTracker: Cooperative Research and Development (Final Report)

RUTE produces and delivers efficient, sustainable structural foundation systems for the wind and solar industries, instrumental in the effort to lower the cost of clean electricity and reduce CO2. RUTE's SunTracker is a high-clearance agrivoltaic solar array. The system uses raised cables, providing support with less materials and cost. These cables can provide tracking for increased energy generation and greater revenue, allowing the land beneath to be used for other means simultaneously. RUTE provided data files that NREL will use to perform computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations to characterize and predict wind loading on the 6x6 RUTE SunTracker photovoltaic (PV) array. Varying both the panel orientations and wind speeds provides information on how the array can manage a variety of weather conditions. These results, in turn, inform RUTE's design and construction of these arrays.

CFD Simulation of Aerobic Gas Fermentation to Enable Commercial Conversion of CO 2 into Aquaculture and Animal Feed: Cooperative Research and Development (Final Report)

NovoNutrients’ fermentation technology uses energy from hydrogen to transform industrial CO2 emissions into premium animal feed ingredients and other valuable products. A single NovoNutrients’ commercial manufacturing plant will capture and convert over 200,000 tons/yr of CO2 into over 100,000 tons/yr of high-protein feed. Key to the rapid and widespread deployment of the technology is maximization of its productivity and energy efficiency. Robust, physically based computational models of the technology will significantly increase productivity and efficiency, accelerating NovoNutrients’ technology to manufacturing scale. NREL has unique capabilities for creating and running such computational models. NREL's existing aerobic bioreaction computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models will be adapted to NovoNutrients’ gas fermentation (CO2, H2, O2) technology. The multiphysics CFD simulations require thousands of high-performance computing (HPC) node hours to simulate the complex geometries and contents of NovoNutrients’ industrial bioreactors. The experimentally validated CFD models were used to identify optimally efficient and productive bioreactor designs and operating conditions.

Enabling Evaluation of a Southern Company Distribution Feeder on NREL ADMS Test Bed: Cooperative Research and Development (Final Report)

The objective of this project is to enable evaluation of a Southern Company distribution feeder on the Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS) test bed. The long-term goal is to evaluate a federated distributed energy resource (DER) management solution that aggregates DERs through either direct control, transactive control or an aggregator to provide bulk services while observing distribution system voltage and power constraints. The DER aggregation needs to be coordinated with an ADMS that is responsible for reliable power delivery across the distribution systems. This project takes the first step towards enabling such evaluation by deploying an ADMS from Oracle (Southern Company's ADMS supplier) with a Southern Company feeder at NREL.

Membrane Electrode Assembly Manufacturing Automation Technology for the Electrochemical Compression of Hydrogen: Cooperative Research and Development (Final Report)

Electrochemical compression has the possibility to outcompete mechanical compression for hydrogen end- use applications. While HyET has a compressor that can output JO kilograms (kg)/day (fully scalable from home-to-industrial application) at up to 700 bar, the energy demand and reliability require top-quality electrochemical hydrogen compression (EHC) membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs), preferably prepared by cost-effective high-capacity manufacturing. High pressure requires a special MEA design, deviating from typical proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) MEAs with adapted catalyst layer substrates, asking for a modified coating process. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) will help HyET by developing an automated catalyst coating process fit for EHC MEA manufacturing. In addition, inline quality inspection methods will be developed/selected to improve the MBA quality as it is used for EHC stack assembly. In a joint effort, NREL and HyET will even design an automated manufacturing process for the EHC MEA and approach potential United States (US) suppliers of manufacturing equipment.

Photovoltaic Mini-Module Soiling Stations: Cooperative Research and Development (Final Report)

Photovoltaic (PV) panels can become soiled due to a variety of environmental factors. This soiling reduces the amount of light reaching the cells and thus their energy output. The ratio of actual output of the soiled device that of a clean device is known as the soiling ratio. The daily change in soiling ratio is known as the soiling rate. To study soiling for different glass coatings. Two soiling stations were fabricated. The stations were designed to monitor the short-circuit current of PV cells encapsulated with glass featuring different coatings and measure the daily soiling ratio with a pair of reference cells, one of which is automatically brushed daily. This work meets the need to understand how the glass coatings perform in additional environments. The stations are designed to quantify both the soiling ratio (the ratio between actual/expected photovoltaic panel power output) as well as differences in anti-soiling performance of different glass coatings. The design of the dirty/clean reference cell system is described by Toth et al. The soiling ratio is calculated by calculating the average irradiance measured within one hour of solar noon by each of the reference cells and then taking the ratio of these daily near-noon averages. The soiling ratio time series for the station deployed in Georgia is shown in Figure 1. This figure shows that the soiling ratio at the site has not yet fallen below 0.99, indicating that peak daily soiling losses have been below 1%. The site was chosen because it is thought to be affected by pollen soiling. With continued monitoring over the course of at least a full year, we expect to be able to observe and quantify pollen soiling events.

A Novel Generator for Novel Underground Environments: Cooperative Research and Development (Final Report)

The Participant is developing a high temperature, high pressure generator to power downhole instrumentation. The generator harvests vibrational energy from the drill string and converts it to stored electrical potential energy. NREL has two principle obligations 1) is modeling for the overall potential downhole effectiveness of the potential drill. Second is the packaging for downhole extreme environments based on prior NREL IP this was discussed with the PI at length but the generator was never provided so direct packaging experiments were not conducted.
