Evaluating the impact of functional groups on membrane‐mediated CO 2 / N 2 gas separations using a common polymer backbone

Abstract Polymeric membranes have shown tremendous promise for the separation of CO 2 from flue gas streams. However, few systematic studies have been conducted to better understand the impact that chemical functionalities have on membrane‐based gas separation performance. To address this gap, we herein describe the synthesis and gas separation performance of a series of vinyl‐addition polynorbornenes bearing various CO 2 ‐philic functional groups. To facilitate direct comparison between functional groups, each material was designed to maintain a common polymer backbone. Though the incorporation of CO 2 ‐philic moieties within a dense polymeric membrane is frequently hypothesized to enhance CO 2 solubility, and thereby increase CO 2 /N 2 selectivity, our results demonstrate that the incorporation of CO 2 ‐philic groups onto a common polymer backbone do not necessarily result in increased gas separation performance. Experimental and computational results demonstrate that the incorporation of amidoxime groups onto a polynorbornene backbone increase CO 2 /N 2 selectivity, whereas commonly employed ethereal side chains only increased permeability.

A dual promotional effect of doping tantalum (Ta) in atomically dispersed Ru/CeO 2 catalyst toward CO 2 methanation: Enhanced associative adsorption of CO 2 and activation of H 2

Precisely controlling the product selectivity in CO 2 hydrogenation through rational catalyst design presents a promising approach to mitigate environmental and energy-related challenges, though it remains a significant scientific hurdle. Herein, the CH 4 selectivity of 0.5 wt% Ru loaded catalysts at 250 °C was effectively shifted from approximately 35 % to 100 % through the incorporation of Ta dopant into the CeO 2 support. The EXAFS spectra in conjunction with CO DRIFTS experiment indicated the presence of atomically dispersed Ru particles anchored on the Ta-doped CeO 2 surface. A higher oxidized CeO 2 surface was evidenced in the presence of Ta dopant. The presence of Ta dopant also improved the dispersion of Ru species and their interaction with the support. Most importantly, the Ru/Ta-CeO 2 catalyst exhibited a pronounced capacity for associative CO 2 -adsorption under atmospheric pressure at 50 °C. An improved H 2 activation was also observed under CO 2 hydrogenation conditions. This novel finding of the dual promotional effect of Ta carries a significant impact in the field of CO 2 capture and utilization.

Mechanistic Insights into CO 2 Electroreduction on Ni 2 P: Understanding Its Selectivity toward Multicarbon Products

Recently, nickel phosphides (Ni x P y ) have been reported to enable selective electrochemical formation of multicarbon products (C 3 and C 4 ) via the CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR); nevertheless, their activities remain low. In order to understand the roots of their high selectivity and low activity and to direct the design of more active Ni x P y -based CO 2 RR catalysts, we investigate the CO 2 RR mechanism on Ni 2 P using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Iin this work, we reveal that the reaction proceeds through the formate pathway, followed by formaldehyde (H 2 CO*) formation and self-condensation. Moreover, we demonstrate that surface hydride transfer steps, along with surface-mediated C–C coupling, are essential in order to avoid C 1 product formation and boost selectivity toward multicarbon products. In addition, we find that the thermal surface hydride transfer from the surface to the physisorbed CO 2 is one of the key rate-limiting steps, and since it is not electroactive, it cannot be accelerated by applying an overpotential. Finally, our results also show that the hydrogen affinity of the surface and the dynamic surface reconstruction via H adsorption facilitate selective CO 2 reduction and C–C coupling on Ni 2 P. These findings provide an impetus for exploring materials design space to identify the physical principles that govern the thermodynamics of rate-limiting thermal steps in electrocatalytic processes.

Efficient Self-Sensitized Photochemical CO 2 Reduction Using [Re(bpy 2+ )(CO) 3 (I)] 2+ and [Re(bpy 2+ )(CO) 3 (CH 3 CN)] 3+ Photocatalysts with Pendent Ammonium Cations

Rhenium(I) tricarbonyl complexes fac-[Re(bpy)(CO) 3 (L)]n + are the classical examples of self-sensitized photocatalysts capable of the dual roles of light absorption and catalysis. Here, in this work, a series of dicationic halido or tricationic solvento complexes fac-[Re(bpy 2+ )(CO) 3 X] n+ (PF 6 ) n (where X = Cl - or I - (n = 2), or CH 3 CN (n = 3) and bpy 2+ is bipyridine modified by two -CH 2 -(NMe3) + tetra-alkylammonium cations) have been investigated as self-sensitized and sensitized CO 2 reduction photocatalysts. Four structural isomers differing in the cation position have been tested in N,Nʹ-dimethylacetamide solvent (DMA) using 1,3-dimethyl-2-phenyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzimidazole (BIH) as the electron donor, and the position of the cationic pendants has a significant impact on the catalyst turnover number and quantum efficiency (ϕ). Up to 455 self-sensitized turnovers of CO and a high photon efficiency (ϕ CO ) of 22% have been achieved. Time-resolved infrared spectroscopy and theoretical calculations were used to characterize the catalytic cycle including the ligand exchange between one-electron reduced (OER) halido and solvento species as well as the binding of CO 2 to the putative two-electron reduced (TER) species. The CO 2 -reactive TER catalyst was formed by disproportionation or intramolecular electron transfer between two forms of the OER catalyst as indicated by the formation of the fully oxidized catalyst concurrent with CO 2 binding. When [Ru(bpy) 3 ] 2+ was used as a sensitizer, catalyst durability improved, and the selectivity toward formate increased as high as 3.3:1 over CO (total TON = 1370) due to acidification of the reaction, which promotes formation of the hydride intermediate, as BIH was consumed and deprotonated.

The water trimer reaction OH + (H 2 O) 3 → (H 2 O) 2 OH + H 2 O

All important stationary points on the potential energy surface (PES) for the reaction OH + (H 2 O) 3 → (H 2 O) 2 OH + H 2 O have been fully optimized using the “gold standard” CCSD(T) method with the large Dunning correlation-consistent cc-pVQZ basis sets. Three types of pathways were found. For the pathway without hydrogen abstraction, the barrier height of the transition state (TS1) is predicted to lie 5.9 kcal mol -1 below the reactants. The two major complexes (H 2 O) 3 ∙∙∙OH (CP1 and CP2a) are found to lie 6.3 and 11.0 kcal mol -1 , respectively, below the reactants [OH + (H 2 O) 3 ]. For one of the H-abstraction pathways the lowest classical barrier height is predicted to be much higher, 6.1 kcal mol -1 (TS2a) above the reactants. For the other H-abstraction pathway the barrier height is even higher, 15.0 (TS3) kcal mol -1 . Vibrational frequencies and the zero-point vibrational energies connected to the PES are also reported. Fianlly, the energy barriers for the H-abstraction pathways are compared with those for the OH + (H 2 O) 2 and OH + H 2 O reactions, and the effects of the third water on the energetics are usually minor (0.2 kcal mol -1 ).

Comprehensive characterization of N- and O- glycosylation of SARS-CoV-2 human receptor angiotensin converting enzyme 2

The emergence of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has created the need for development of new therapeutic strategies. Understanding the mode of viral attachment, entry and replication has become a key aspect of such interventions. The coronavirus surface features a trimeric spike (S) protein that is essential for viral attachment, entry and membrane fusion. The S protein of SARS-CoV-2 binds to human angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (hACE2) for entry. Herein, we describe glycomic and glycoproteomic analysis of hACE2 expressed in HEK293 cells. We observed high glycan occupancy (73.2 to 100%) at all seven possible N-glycosylation sites and surprisingly detected one novel O-glycosylation site. To deduce the detailed structure of glycan epitopes on hACE2 that may be involved in viral binding, we have characterized the terminal sialic acid linkages, the presence of bisecting GlcNAc and the pattern of N-glycan fucosylation. We have conducted extensive manual interpretation of each glycopeptide and glycan spectrum, in addition to using bioinformatics tools to validate the hACE2 glycosylation. Our elucidation of the site-specific glycosylation and its terminal orientations on the hACE2 receptor, along with the modeling of hACE2 glycosylation sites can aid in understanding the intriguing virus-receptor interactions and assist in the development of novel therapeutics to prevent viral entry. Here, the relevance of studying the role of ACE2 is further increased due to some recent reports about the varying ACE2 dependent complications with regard to age, sex, race and pre-existing conditions of COVID-19 patients.

A chemical kinetic mechanism for combustion and flame propagation of CH 2 F 2 /O 2 /N 2 mixtures

Here in this work, we compiled and evaluated rate expressions for reactions relevant to the decomposition and combustion of CH 2 F 2 (difluoromethane, refrigerant R-32) in CH 2 F 2 /O 2 /N 2 flames. The recommended values have been used in premixed flame calculations, reported elsewhere, to model experimentally derived burning velocities determined using a constant volume spherical flame method. In this work, we also provide a detailed description of the reaction pathways for decomposition and combustion of CH 2 F 2 . This work is part of a larger effort at NIST to characterize and predict the flammability of new refrigerant working fluids and their blends for consideration as replacements of current refrigerants with high global warming potentials.

Th 2 O – , Th 2 Au – , and Th 2 AuO 1,2 – Anions: Photoelectron Spectroscopic and Computational Characterization of Energetics and Bonding

The observation and characterization of the anions: Th 2 O – , Th 2 Au – , and Th 2 AuO 1,2 – is reported. These species were studied through a synergetic combination of anion photoelectron spectroscopy and ab initio correlated molecular orbital theory calculations at the CCSD(T) level with large correlation-consistent basis sets. To better understand the energetics and bonding in these anions and their corresponding neutrals, a range of smaller diatomic to tetratomic species were studied computationally. Correlated molecular orbital theory calculations at the CCSD(T) level showed that in most of these cases, there are close-lying anions and neutral clusters with different geometries and spin states and are consistent with the experimentally observed spectra. Thus, comparison of experimentally determined and computationally predicted vertical detachment energies and electron affinities for different optimized geometries and spin states shows excellent agreement to within 0.1 eV. The structures for both the neutrals and anions have a significant ionic component to the bonding because of the large electron affinity of the Au atom and modest ionization potentials for Th 2 , Th 2 O, and Th 2 O 2 . The analysis of the bonding for the Th–Th bonds from the molecular orbitals is consistent with this ionic model. The results show that there is a wide variation in the bond distance from 2.7 to 3.5 Å for the Th–Th bonds all of which are less than twice the atomic radius of Th of 3.6 Å. The bond distances encompass bond orders from 4 to 0. Furthermore, there can be different bond orders for the same bond distance depending on the nature of the ionic bonding suggesting that one may not be able to correlate the bond order with the bond distance in these types of clusters. In addition, the presence of an Au atom may provide a unique probe of the bonding in such clusters because of its ability to accept an electron from clusters with modest ionization potentials.

Slow spin dynamics in the hyperhoneycomb lattice [ ( C 2 H 5 ) 3 NH ] 2 Cu 2 ( C 2 O 4 ) 3 revealed by H 1 NMR studies

We report the results of magnetic susceptibility χ and H 1 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on a three-dimensional hyperhoneycomb lattice compound [ ( C 2 H 5 ) 3 NH ] 2 Cu 2 ( C 2 O 4 ) 3 (CCCO). The average value of the antiferromagnetic (AFM) exchange coupling between the Cu 2 + ( S = 1 / 2 ) spins was determined to be J ~ 50 K from the χ measurements. No long-range magnetic ordering has been observed down to T = 50 mK, although NMR lines become slightly broader at low temperatures below 1 K. The broadening of the NMR spectrum observed below 1 K reveals that the Cu spin moments remain at this temperature, suggesting a non-spin-singlet ground state. The temperature and magnetic field dependence of 1 / T 1 at temperatures above 20 K is well explained by paramagnetic thermal spin fluctuations where the fluctuation frequency of Cu 2 + spins is higher than the NMR frequency of the order of megahertz. However, a clear signature of the slowing down of the Cu 2 + spin fluctuations was observed at low temperatures where 1 / T 1 shows a thermally activated behavior. The magnetic field dependence of the magnitude of the spin excitation gap suggests that the magnetic behaviors of CCCO are characterized as an AFM chain at low temperatures.

Magnetic field induced a b -plane rotation of the Eu magnetic moments in trigonal EuMg 2 Bi 2 and EuMg 2 Sb 2 single crystals below their Néel temperatures

The thermodynamic and electronic-transport properties of trigonal EuMg 2 Bi 2 in ab-plane magnetic fields H x and the A-type antiferromagnetic structure have recently been reported. The Eu magnetic moments with spin S = 7/2 remain locked in the ab plane up to and above the ab-plane critical field $H^{c}_{x}$ = 27.5 kOe at which the Eu moments become parallel to H x . Here additional measurements at low fields are reported that reveal a new spin-reorientation transition at a field H c1 ≈ 465 Oe where the Eu moments remain in the ab plane but become perpendicular to H x . At higher fields, the moments cant toward the field resulting in M ∝ H x up to $H^{c}_{x}$. Similar results are reported from measurements of the magnetic properties of EuMg 2 Sb 2 single crystals, where H c1 ≈ 220 Oe is found. Theory is formulated that models the low-field magnetic behavior of both materials, and the associated anisotropies are calculated. Further, the ab-plane trigonal anisotropy in EuMg 2 Sb 2 is found to be significantly smaller than in EuMg 2 Bi 2 .

K 2 Co 2 TeO 6 : A layered magnet with a S = 1 2 Co 2 + honeycomb lattice

Recent observations of Kitaev interactions in d 7 electron configurations have generated research interest in Co 2+ based honeycomb magnets. Here, we report the synthesis of a K 2 Co 2 TeO 6 single crystal. X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy experiments show that K 2 Co 2 TeO 6 crystallizes in a $P$6 3 /$mcm$ space group with undistorted honeycomb layers of Co 2+ ions. Anisotropic magnetic and thermodynamic characterizations demonstrate an effective S = $\frac{1}{2}$ state of Co 2+ at low temperature, competing magnetic phases, and weak magnetic transitions that can be suppressed by applying fields. Moreover, the interlayer K disorder level is tunable by thermal treatments, and it affects the magnetic features obviously. In conclusion, our findings provide a new and promising platform for studying Kitaev physics.

Visually resolving the direct Z-scheme heterojunction in CdS@ZnIn 2 S 4 hollow cubes for photocatalytic evolution of H 2 and H 2 O 2 from pure water

We report the direct Z-scheme heterojunction has been recently emerging as an appealing architecture for photocatalysts design. Its efficiency depends on the interfacial and structural features of the photocatalysts. Herein, the two-dimensional ZnIn 2 S 4 nanosheets are grown on the surface of CdS hollow cubes to construct the CdS@ZnIn 2 S 4 hierarchical hollow photocatalysts with chemically bonded interface. The visualized measurements based on spatial-resolved surface photovoltage spectroscopy, combined with other spectroscopic and simulation investigations, clearly disclose that the CdS@ZnIn 2 S 4 hollow cubes constitute a highly efficient direct Z-scheme system. This accounts for the stoichiometric generation of H 2 and H 2 O 2 from pure water observed for the CdS@ZnIn 2 S 4 sulfide-only photocatalysts under visible light irradiation with an apparent quantum efficiency of 1.63 % at 400 nm. The present work demonstrates an effective protocol to achieve comprehensive insights into the charge transfer route at semiconductor heterojunction, and offers a viable way for constructing efficient sulfide-only photocatalysts for driving water splitting reaction.

Single crystal neutron and magnetic measurements of Rb 2 Mn 3 (VO 4 ) 2 CO 3 and K 2 Co 3 (VO 4 ) 2 CO 3 with mixed honeycomb and triangular magnetic lattices

Two new alkali vanadate carbonates with divalent transition metals have been synthesized as large single crystals via a high-temperature (600 °C) hydrothermal technique. Compound I, Rb 2 Mn 3 (VO 4 ) 2 CO 3 , crystallizes in the trigonal crystal system in the space group P[3 with combining macron]1c, and compound II, K 2 Co 3 (VO 4 ) 2 CO 3 , crystallizes in the hexagonal space group P6 3 /m. Both structures contain honeycomb layers and triangular lattices made from edge-sharing MO 6 octahedra and MO 5 trigonal bipyramids, respectively. The honeycomb and triangular layers are connected along the c-axis through tetrahedral [VO 4 ] groups. The MO 5 units are connected with each other by carbonate groups in the ab-plane by forming a triangular magnetic lattice. The difference in space groups between I and II was also investigated with Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. Single crystal magnetic characterization of I indicates three magnetic transitions at 77 K, 2.3 K, and 1.5 K. The corresponding magnetic structures for each magnetic transition of I were determined using single crystal neutron diffraction. At 77 K the compound orders in the MnO 6 -honeycomb layer in a Néel-type antiferromagnetic orientation while the MnO 5 triangular lattice ordered below 2.3 K in a colinear ‘up–up–down’ fashion, followed by a planar ‘Y’ type magnetic structure. K 2 Co 3 (VO 4 ) 2 CO 3 (II) exhibits a canted antiferromagnetic ordering below T N = 8 K. Here, the Curie–Weiss fit (200–350 K) gives a Curie–Weiss temperature of –42 K suggesting a dominant antiferromagnetic coupling in the Co 2+ magnetic sublattices.
