The Road to Trinity: Seventy-five years ago, Los Alamos scientists detonated the world’s first nuclear explosion

With a brilliant hot flash and a loud boom, the giant mushroom cloud with its fiery core filled the predawn sky above the New Mexico desert. The nuclear age had begun. It was 75 years ago on July 16, 1945, that Los Alamos scientists changed the world with the successful detonation of “the Gadget” – the device created to test the Fat Man implosion-type plutonium weapon before it was taken into combat. However, the road to Trinity, as the test was named by J. Robert Oppenheimer, who is thought to have been inspired by a line in a John Donne poem, was a difficult one.

Colorado Technology Primer for Economists and Social Scientists (CRADA Final Report)

NREL will assist the Colorado School of Mines (Mines) in supporting a series of one-week training workshops. This proposed training program will be two, week-long summer school sessions in each of the next two years to help give early career economists and social scientists a solid introduction and grounding on the technical components of the electrical distribution system.

Building MCP-native hierarchical AI scientist ecosystems: a perspective on scaling multi-agent scientific discovery

Large language models (LLMs) are evolving from chatbots with limited tool-using capabilities to agentic AI systems that can perform deep research, assist in proposing hypotheses, help design experiments, automate data analysis, and draft scientific reports. However, there are currently two bottlenecks limiting LLMs' real-world impact on the broader scientific research community beyond academic demonstrations: lack of interoperability (repetitive manual tool-integration is required across scenarios) and the need for scalable coordination (unstructured communication and memory become brittle as the number of agents grows). In this Perspective, we argue that the next phase of agentic scientific discovery requires the development of an ecosystem of protocol-native agents and tools organized through hierarchies inspired by human society, beyond the current paradigm of a single monolithic “AI scientist”. We use Model Context Protocol (MCP) as a concrete example of an emerging interoperability layer for scientific tool and context exchange, and we propose three complementary pathways to increase the scaling capabilities of an MCP-native scientific ecosystem by addressing the composability issues: (1) MCP servers for high-value scientific tools maintained by domain experts, (2) automated transformation of existing code repositories into MCP services, and (3) autonomous invention and evolution of new agents and workflows. Finally, we provide a practical roadmap for scaling AI-driven scientific discovery by expanding tool supply and coordination in MCP-native scientific ecosystems.

Organizational stress and individual strain: A social-psychological study of risk factors in coronary heart disease among administrators, engineers, and scientists

It is hypothesized that organizational stresses, such as high quantitative work load, responsibility for persons, poor relations with role senders, and contact with alien organizational territories, may be associated with high levels of psychological and physiological strain which are risk factors in coronary heart disease. It is further hypothesized that persons with coronary-prone Type A personality characteristics are most likely to exhibit strain under conditions of organizational stress. Measures of these stresses, personality traits, and strains were obtained from 205 male NASA administrators, engineers, and scientists. Type A personality measures included sense of time urgency, persistence, involved striving, leadership, and preference for competitive and environmentally overburdening situations.

On the fundamental importance of the social psychology of research as a basic paradigm for the philosophy of science: A philosophical case study of the psychology of the Apollo moon scientists

A combined philosophical and social psychological study of over 40 of the Apollo moon Scientists reveals that the Orthodox or Received View of Scientific Theories is found wanting in several respects: (1) observations are not theory-free; (2) scientific observations are not directly observable; and (3) observations are no less problematic than theories. The study also raises some severe criticisms of distinction between the context of discovery and the context of justification. Not only does this distinction fail to describe the actual practice of science but even more important it has the dangerous effect of excluding some of the strongest lines of evidence which could most effectively challenge the distinction. The distinction is harmful of efforts to found interdisciplinary theories and philosophies of science.
