Effect of length of Handley Page tip slots on the lateral-stability factor, damping in roll

Tests have been made in the NACA 7 by 10 foot wind tunnel on a Clark Y wing model equipped with various lengths of Handley Page slots extending inward from the wing tips. The slot lengths tested ranged from 20 to 100 per cent of the semi span. The effect of slot lengths on damping in roll was determined by means of both free-autorotation and forced-rotation test. In addition, the maximum lift coefficient was found with each slot length. The optimum length of slot for satisfactory damping in roll over a large range of angles of attack was found to be slightly over 50 per cent of the semispan for the form of slot tested.

Wind-tunnel Investigation of Effect of Yaw on Lateral-stability Characteristics I : Four N.A.C.A. 23012 Wings of Various Plan Forms with and Without Dihedral

Four N.A.C.A. 23012 wings were tested at several angles of yaw in the N.A.C.A. 7- by 10-foot wind tunnel. All the wings have rounded tips and, in plan form, one is rectangular and the others are tapered 3:1 with various amounts of sweep. Each wing was tested with two amounts of dihedral and with partial-span split flaps. The coefficients of lift, drag, and pitching moment are given for all the models at zero yaw. The coefficients of rolling moment, yawing moment, and side force are given for the rectangular wing at all values of yaw tested. The rate of change in the coefficients with angle of yaw is given in convenient form for stability calculations.

The Lateral Stability of Equal-flanged Aluminum-alloy I-beams Subjected to Pure Bending

Equal-flange beams of a special extruded I-section of 27ST aluminum alloy were tested in pure bending. Complete end fixity was not attained. Loading was continued until a definite maximum value had been reached. Tensile tests were made on specimens cut from the flanges and the web of each beam. Compressive stress-strain characteristics were determined by pack compression tests on specimens cut from the flanges. Values computed from an equation previously suggested by one of the authors for the critical stress at which such beams become unstable were found to be in good agreement with values computed from experimentally determined critically bending moments.
