The Completed SDSS-IV extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey: Cosmological Implications from two Decades of Spectroscopic Surveys at the Apache Point observatory

We present the cosmological implications from final measurements of clustering using galaxies, quasars, and Ly$\alpha$ forests from the completed Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) lineage of experiments in large-scale structure. These experiments, composed of data from SDSS, SDSS-II, BOSS, and eBOSS, offer independent measurements of baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) measurements of angular-diameter distances and Hubble distances relative to the sound horizon, $r_d$, from eight different samples and six measurements of the growth rate parameter, $f\sigma_8$, from redshift-space distortions (RSD). This composite sample is the most constraining of its kind and allows us to perform a comprehensive assessment of the cosmological model after two decades of dedicated spectroscopic observation. We show that the BAO data alone are able to rule out dark-energy-free models at more than eight standard deviations in an extension to the flat, $\Lambda$CDM model that allows for curvature. When combined with Planck Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) measurements of temperature and polarization the BAO data provide nearly an order of magnitude improvement on curvature constraints. The RSD measurements indicate a growth rate that is consistent with predictions from Planck primary data and with General Relativity. When combining the results of SDSS BAO and RSD with external data, all multiple-parameter extensions remain consistent with a $\Lambda$CDM model. Regardless of cosmological model, the precision on $\Omega_\Lambda$, $H_0$, and $\sigma_8$, remains at roughly 1\%, showing changes of less than 0.6\% in the central values between models. The inverse distance ladder measurement under a o$w_0w_a$CDM yields $H_0= 68.20 \pm 0.81 \, \rm km\, s^{-1} Mpc^{-1}$, remaining in tension with several direct determination methods. (abridged)

Soil bulk density and texture data collected during field survey associated with NEON AOP survey, East River, CO 2018

The purpose of soil core sampling was to determine soil bulk density, volumetric water content, and soil texture across the sites that were sampled in association with the National Ecological Observatory Network's Airborne Observation Platform (NEON AOP) in 2018. Soil cores were collected from surface (2.5-7.5 cm) and subsurface (50-55cm) depths at sampling sites across East River, Washington Gulch, Slate River, and Coal Creek watersheds in Gunnison, Colorado during the summer of 2018. Surface samples were weighed for determination of soil water content prior to dry down for bulk density calculations. For all samples, we measured dry weight and weight of < 2mm fraction and conducted soil textural analysis. We provide metadata for the samples, raw data files, python code that was used to calculate bulk density, water content, and texture fraction densities from primary datasets, and a final csv file with the calculated soil bulk density, volumetric water content, and soil texture data. Additional associated site metadata and vegetation fractional cover information can be found in the associated data release.

Comparison of GPS surveys with historical triangulation surveys in the southern California borderland

Global plate models predict about 56 mm/yr of motion between the North American and Pacific plates along the plate boundary in southern California, while geodetic and Holocene geological data suggest only 34 mm/yr on the San Andreas fault. Deformation in the Great Basin does not explain this discrepancy, and it has been suggested that faulting in the offshore of southern California could account for some of the discrepancy. Evidence of deformation in the offshore region of southern California is most abundant in the Santa Barbara Channel. Geological investigations of folding and faulting in this region, as well as earthquake investigations, indicate north-south shortening across the channel on the order of 10 to 20 mm/yr. The most rapid rates occur to the east of the channel in the Ventura Basin. South of the Santa Barbara Channel, though, evidence for deformation is limited to seismicity studies which are sparse. Seismic events are abundant in this area, but their implication for the amount of deformation in the offshore is unclear. GPS measurements made between June 1986 and May 1988 have been used to obtain vector positions for several stations at which historical first order triangulation observations were performed between the late 1800's and the mid 1900's between the coast of southern California and the nearby offshore islands. By comparing the spheroidal angles obtained from the GPS positions with the the previously observed triangulation data, shear strain rates can be calculated for the region using Frank's method. These results seem to suggest that shear strain deformation occurs in the offshore of southern California as a result of north to north-west shortening. That deformation is most active in the Santa Barbara Channel region and least active between Catalina and San Nicholas islands. Just how much of the missing plate motion can be accounted for by this deformation is not known at this time and will have to await further analysis.

Expert system verification and validation survey. Delivery 2: Survey results

The purpose is to determine the state-of-the-practice in Verification and Validation (V and V) of Expert Systems (ESs) on current NASA and industry applications. This is the first task of the series which has the ultimate purpose of ensuring that adequate ES V and V tools and techniques are available for Space Station Knowledge Based Systems development. The strategy for determining the state-of-the-practice is to check how well each of the known ES V and V issues are being addressed and to what extent they have impacted the development of ESs.

Spiral Survey Expedition: A proposal to organize for the Survey, exploration and eventual colonization of the Milky Way Galaxy

This paper details a plan to explore the galaxy. Areas of interest to an era of cyberspace include the Tech-Index information system for the expedition and the role cyberspace has in increasing expedition productivity and increasing the capabilities of cyberspace by expanding the goals and data set. The paper offers lists of projects for the cybermarket pool. The expedition is described also as a developers tool for cyberspace to acknowledge the scope of the human mind far surpasses present engineering yet guides our direction of energies and materials. Maintaining the biological capability to reproduce the Terran biosphere via Evolution park conservation areas is discussed. The ecological repair of Spaceship Earth and the build up of an interstellar industrial base from simple recyling and educational programs is meshed with a proposed 'reverse engineering cyberspace' plan. A set of constructive contests are proposed with 3 new currencies offered as prizes. The Planet, The Solar System, The Galaxy are 3 areas of focus. Each of these areas are considered in a cyberspectrum of (1) Sentience; (2) Biological diversity; and (3) Energy/Matter resources.

A Deep Imaging Survey of NGC 6475 and a Deep Survey of the Young Open Cluster Alpha Persei

We have published three papers directly related to the x-ray data (see below), and one other paper directly related to the optical photometry obtained in connection to the ROSAT data analysis (also listed below). In addition, we have used the x-ray data in combination with the optical photometry and with high resolution optical spectra that we have obtained (to derive spectroscopic rotational velocities) to address questions related to the dependence of coronal activity on the rotation rate, mass, and other characteristics of the target stars. The overall goal of our ROSAT projects has been to determine the time evolution of coronal activity in low mass stars, and from that behavior place constraints on the physical processes involved in generating coronal activity. NGC 6475 and Alpha Persei are important parts of that process. We are now beginning to address how these data constrain theoretical models of angular momentum evolution and dynamo magnetic field generation (see paper by Stauffer et al. and Krishnamurthi et al. listed below in the "related papers" section). We are still working on two papers pertaining to this grant (rotational velocities and chromospheric activity of Alpha Persei x-ray sources and rotational velocities and lithium abundances of NGC 6475 sources), but we will publish those papers using funds from other grants.
