Neutrinos are the Standard Model (SM) particles which we understand the least, often due to how weakly they interact with the other SM particles. Beyond this, very little is known about interactions among the neutrinos, i.e., their self-interactions. The SM predicts neutrino self-interactions at a level beyond any current experimental capabilities, leaving open the possibility for beyond-the-SM interactions across many energy scales. In this white paper, we review the current knowledge of neutrino self-interactions from a vast array of probes, from cosmology, to astrophysics, to the laboratory. Furthermore, we also discuss theoretical motivations for such self-interactions, including neutrino masses and possible connections to dark matter. Looking forward, we discuss the capabilities of searches in the next generation and beyond, highlighting the possibility of future discovery of this beyond-the-SM physics.
The practical application of high-capacity Li-rich cathode materials is hindered by capacity fading and voltage decay. The capacity fading and voltage decay could be effectively overcome by using water-soluble guar gum (GG) binder instead of traditional polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). However, the specific role of the GG binder is not clear yet, though the GG binder can significantly improve the electrochemical performance of Li-rich cathode. To understand the effect of GG binder on the morphology, microstructure of electrode and electrode/electrolyte interfaces, ex-situ scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray adsorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES), in-situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were applied to comparatively study the charge-discharge processes of Li-rich Li 1.2 Ni 0.2 Mn 0.6 O 2 cathode when using GG and PVDF as binders. The results indicate that the GG binder can prevent electrode crack and active material loss, ascribing to the strong mechanical adhesion of GG binder with active material particles and current collector. It has found that the GG binder can also induce the formation of a uniform layer on Li 1.2 Ni 0.2 Mn 0.6 O 2 particles’ surface. As a consequence, both the electrolyte decomposition and the electrode corrosion were significantly inhibited. The strong chelation between Mn 2+ and polar OH group restrain Mn ion dissolution, which contributes to surface structural transformation mitigation. Here, our study reveals the role of water-soluble GG binder in reducing capacity fading and voltage decay of Li-rich material and is of great importance in design functional binders for high-performance Li-rich electrodes.
Deposition of light-absorbing particles on glacier surfaces poses a series of adverse impacts on the cryospheric environment, climate and human health. Broad attention of the scientific community has been paid on insoluble light-absorbing impurities (ILAIs) in snow and ice on glaciers over the Tibetan Plateau (TP). However, systematic investigation of ILAIs in snowpack of glaciers on the TP is scarce. In this study, the properties and darkening effect of ILAIs in snowpack on glaciers are extensively investigated in the southeast of TP. Results show that ILAIs concentrations in multiple types of snow and ice samples were significantly different. Snowpit depths varied substantially from one profile to another during May and June 2016. The average concentrations of ILAIs in snowpits increase as snow melting progresses. Black carbon (BC) and dust cause snow albedo reduction more in snow with larger grain size Re. Based on a radiative transfer model calculation, the average albedo reduction induced by BC in the snowpack was 0.141 ± 0.02, and associated daily maximum radiative forcing (RF) was 72.97 ± 12.7 W m-2. BC is a controlling light-absorbing factor in snowpack and causes substantial albedo reduction and thus the associated daily maximum RF. The maximum reduction of snow cover duration was 4.56 ± 0.71 days caused by BC and dust in snowpack in southeastern TP. The average mass absorption cross-section (MAC) of BC from multiple snowpits was 3.26 ± 0.46 m2 g-1, which represents a typical value of MAC in snow on glaciers, but it is type-dependent of snow/ice samples. Tropospheric aerosols vertically extended up to 8 km over the TP and its surrounding areas, which indicates the transport of aerosols from remote sources through elevated pathways. A large amount of carbon stored in the brittle glaciers can be potentially released with meltwater runoff under a warming climate. This study provides a new insight for investigating carbonaceous and light-absorbing particles in glacierization areas.

Producing a valuable chemical product through diversion of wet wastes can simultaneously resolve the problems associated with increasing wastes and greenhouse gas emissions from conventional chemical production processes. In this work, we investigated the life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions, water, and fossil-fuel consumption for waste-derived polylactic acids (PLA) from three different waste feedstocks, namely wastewater sludge, food waste, and swine manure, using the Greenhouse Gases, Regulated Emissions, and Energy Use in Technologies (GREET) model. The decarbonization potential of replacing fossil-based resins with the waste-derived polymer was also investigated. The results show that swine manure-to-PLA pathway was the least carbon intensive (—1.4 kgCO 2 e/kg) among the three waste-to-PLA pathways on a cradle-to-grave basis, followed by the food waste case (—1.3 kgCO 2 e/kg) and then by the wastewater sludge case (0.6 kgCO 2 e/kg). In the baseline scenario, all three waste-to-PLA pathways were less carbon intensive than both fossil-based PET and HDPE on a cradle-to-grave basis: 66% (vs. PET) and 56% (vs. HDPE), 171 and 192%, 181 and 205% reduction in GHG emissions for wastewater sludge-, food waste-, and swine manure-to-PLA pathway, respectively. For all sensitivity cases investigated, the food waste- and swine manure-to-PLA pathways were significantly less carbon intensive than their fossil-counterparts. In terms of the annual decarbonization potential of replacing fossil-based PET or HDPE, the wastewater sludge- and food waste-pathway showed higher mitigation potential than the swine manure-pathway: i) 18–28 kilotons CO 2 e-reduction per year for wastewater sludge pathway; ii) 23–26 kTCO 2 e-reduction/yr for food waste pathway; and iii) about 5 kTCO 2 e-reduction/yr for swine manure pathway depending on the type of conventional resin replaced. However, given the abundant availability of the swine manure feedstocks across the United States, the decarbonization potential of swine manure-based pathway can also increase as the plant capacity or the number of plants grow.
Heterogeneity in sediment and aquifer is universal, resulting in preferential flows of injected materials in the high permeability regions and forming flow by-passed zones in the low permeability regions during in-situ subsurface remediation. This adverse effect can considerably delay the completion of remedial operations and significantly increase the cost. Column experiments were designed and conducted to study the transport of starch- and starch-xanthan gum modified Fe-Mn binary oxide particles (SFM and SXFM) in saturated heterogeneous porous media and to reveal the particles’ arsenic (As) stabilization performance. Fine-in-Coarse (FIC) and Coarse-in-Fine (CIF) patterns of heterogeneous packings were set up in the columns. Testing results demonstrated that starch-xanthan gum dual treatment on Fe-Mn binary oxides successfully improved the particles’ migration capability in heterogeneous porous media and their distribution uniformity attributed to the profound shear thinning behavior of xanthan gum solution. The addition of xanthan gum to the system increased the viscosity and shear thinning property of SXFM suspension, making it a better candidate for delivery. Both SFM and SXFM stabilized As in heterogeneously packed sediment collected from a contaminated site, with SXFM showing better stabilization performance than SFM. The stabilization effects of SXFM were 90.7-97.0%, compared to 82.0-95.2% of SFM.
The production of drop-in replacements for biofuels is a grand challenge. Lignocellulosic biomass is considered a promising feedstock for producing fuel ethanol because of its great availability. Restrepo-Flórez et al. systematically study the upgrading of ethanol toward advanced fuels with tailored properties and with consideration of process synthesis.
Ni-rich NMC (LiNixMnyCo1-x-yO2, x = 0.6) has the attributes of high specific capacity (greater than 180 mAh g-1), high operating voltage (ca. 3.8 V) and low cost, which is therefore deemed as one of the most promising cathode candidates for next-generation high-energy Li-ion batteries (LIBs). However, challenges exist before the large-scale commercialization of Ni-rich cathode such as gas generation, capacity degradation especially at high rate or elevated temperatures. From thin film to densely pack high loading cathode, this work investigates the rate-limiting steps in Ni-rich cathodes e.g., phase structure, electronic and ionic conductivity to understand the reaction kinetics at different scales. This work provides new insights in understanding the electrochemical properties of Ni-rich cathode at different levels to inspire revolutionary ideas to address the fundamental issues of Ni-rich cathode from materials to relevant electrode levels.

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery is one of the most promising candidates for the next generation energy storage systems. However, several barriers, including polysulfide shuttle effect, the slow solid-solid surface reaction pathway in the lower discharge plateau, and corrosion of Li anode still limit its practical applications, especially under the lean electrolyte condition required for high energy density applications. Here, we propose a solution-mediated sulfur reduction pathway to improve the capacity and reversibility of the sulfur cathode and suppress dendrite growth on the Li metal anode simultaneously. With this method, a high coulombic efficiency (99%) and stable cycle life over 100 cycles were achieved under application-relevant conditions (S loading: 6.2 mg cm-2; electrolyte to sulfur ratio: 3 mLE gs-1; sulfur weigh ratio: 72 wt%). This result is enabled by a specially designed Li2S4-rich electrolyte, in which Li2S is formed through a chemical disproportionation reaction instead of electrochemical routes. A diglyme solvent was used to obtain electrolytes with the optimum range of Li2S4 concentration. Operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy confirms the solution pathway in a practical Li-S cell. This solution pathway not only introduces a new electrolyte regime for practical Li-S batteries, but also provides a new perspective for bypassing the inefficient surface pathway for other electrochemical processes.
