Anisotropic structure and optical engineering of strontium titanate and zirconia responding to sequential hydrogen and helium irradiation

Unraveling the correlation between strain engineering with anisotropic optical properties via nanoscale defects gradually evolved into a strategy for fundamental studies and technological applications, yet it remains understudied in functional complex oxides compared to metals and semiconductors. Here, the methodology of strain engineering for the determination of the lattice parameters, parallel/normal to the sample surface, in the individual layers of single-crystalline superlattices is derived, which is based on analysis of high-angle X-ray diffraction measurements in combination with diffraction reciprocal space mapping. With modeling that takes into account the effect of elastic properties, two elastically anisotropic materials, SrTiO 3 and ZrO 2 , have been compared in terms of defect-induced elastic strain caused by individual and sequential H + and He 2+ irradiation. The anisotropic lattice swelling with corresponding refractive index, and obstructive behavior of elastic strain recovery are demonstrated in SrTiO 3 , while approaching strain behaviors accompanied by isotropic refractive index distribution in both orientations are confirmed in ZrO 2 . Under sequential He 2+ /H + irradiation, pre-existing He-vacancy complexes acted as vacancy traps, preferentially capturing H + clusters to induce lattice distortion and enhance absorption. Nanohardness increments (ΔH) calculated by the DBH model matched nanoindentation results, confirming that sequential irradiation generated higher indentation yield stress than individual irradiations.

Unlocking Electrostrain in Plastically Deformed Barium Titanate

Achieving substantial electrostrain alongside a large effective piezoelectric strain coefficient (d 33 *) in piezoelectric materials remains a formidable challenge for advanced actuator applications. Here, in this work, a straightforward approach to enhance these properties by strategically designing the domain structure and controlling the domain switching through the introduction of arrays of ordered {100}<100> dislocations is proposed. This dislocation engineering yields an intrinsic lock-in steady–state electrostrain of 0.69% at a low field of 10 kV cm -1 without external stress and an output strain energy density of 5.24 J cm -3 in single-crystal BaTiO 3 , outperforming the benchmark piezoceramics and relaxor ferroelectric single-crystals. Additionally, applying a compression stress of 6 MPa fully unlocks electrostrains exceeding 1%, yielding a remarkable d 33 * value over 10 000 pm V -1 and achieving a record-high strain energy density of 11.67 J cm -3 . Optical and transmission electron microscopy, paired with laboratory and synchrotron X-ray diffraction, is employed to rationalize the observed electrostrain. Phase-field simulations further elucidate the impact of charged dislocations on domain nucleation and domain switching. These findings present an effective and sustainable strategy for developing high-performance, lead-free piezoelectric materials without the need for additional chemical elements, offering immense potential for actuator technologies.

Combining the Best of Two Chelating Titans: A Hydroxypyridinone-Decorated Macrocyclic Ligand for Efficient and Concomitant Complexation and Sensitized Luminescence of f-Elements

An ideal chelator for f-elements features rapid kinetics of complexation, high thermodynamic stability, and slow kinetics of dissociation. Here we present the facile synthesis of a macrocyclic ligand bearing four 1-hydroxy-2-pyridinone units linked to a cyclen scaffold that rapidly forms thermodynamically stable complexes with lanthanides (Sm 3+ , Eu 3+ , Tb 3+ , Dy 3+ ) and a representative late actinide (Cm 3+ ) in aqueous media and concurrently sensitizes them. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy revealed an increase in the Ln/An-O bond lengths following the trend Cm>Eu>Tb and EXAFS data were compatible with time-resolved luminescence studies, which indicated one to two water molecules in the inner metal coordination sphere of Eu(III) and two water molecules for the Cm(III) complex. Spectrofluorimetric ligand competition titrations against DTPA confirmed the high thermodynamic stability of DOTHOPO complexes, with pM values between 19.9(1) and 21.9(2).

Clash of the titans: ultra-high energy KM3NeT event versus IceCube data

KM3NeT has reported the detection of a remarkably high-energy through-going muon. Lighting up about a third of the detector, this muon likely originated from a neutrino exceeding 10 PeV in energy. The crucial question we need to answer is where this event comes from and what its source is. Intriguingly, IceCube has been operating with a much larger effective area for a considerably longer time, yet it has not reported neutrinos above 10 PeV. We quantify the tension between the KM3NeT event and the absence of similar high-energy events in IceCube under various assumptions of the origin for the neutrino including the isotropic diffuse flux, cosmogenic flux, and a steady or transient point source. Through a detailed analysis, we determine the most likely neutrino energy to be in the range of 23 – 2400 PeV, and find a tension between the experiments ranging from 3.6 to 3.1 σ for diffuse origins and 2.9 to 2.0 σ for point sources. The lack of observation of high-energy events in IceCube seriously challenges the explanation of this event coming from any known diffuse fluxes. Our results indicate the KM3NeT event is likely the first observation of a new astrophysical source.

DFT-guided flux synthesis of a family of layered titanates crystallizing in the lepidocrocite structure type

K 0.72 Fe 0.72 Ti 1.28 O 4 , a layered mixed-metal oxide belonging to the lepidocrocite structure type, was grown out of a molten KCl-KF mixture at 800 °C. The compound crystallizes in orthorhombic space group Cmcm and exhibits two-dimensional layers, composed of mixed Fe/Ti octahedra, separated by K ions that occupy the interlayer layer space and maintain charge balance. The targeted flux synthesis of the Ni, Cu, and Zn analogs was carried out after density functional theory (DFT) calculations predicted their formation to be energetically favorable, yielding K 0.77 Ni 0.38 Ti 1.62 O 4 , K 0.77 Cu 0.38 Ti 1.62 O 4 , and K 0.73 Zn 0.36 Ti 1.64 O 4 . Finally, all four compositions can be prepared via conventional solid-state technique by mixing and heating stoichiometric amounts of KNO 3 , appropriate transition metal oxide precursors, and TiO 2 .
