Threshold law for positron-atom impact ionisation

The threshold law for ionisation of atoms by positron impact is adduced in analogy with our approach to the electron-atom ionization. It is concluded the Coulomb-dipole region of the potential gives the essential part of the interaction in both cases and leads to the same kind of result: a modulated linear law. An additional process which enters positron ionization is positronium formation in the continuum, but that will not dominate the threshold yield. The result is in sharp contrast to the positron threshold law as recently derived by Klar on the basis of a Wannier-type analysis.

Pair Production near Threshold in Pulsar Magnetic Fields

In pulsar polar cap models, curvature radiation gamma rays produce e(+)e(-) pairs in the strong magnetic fields near the surface of the neutron star. While these gamma rays have energies E sub gamma mc(2), they also propagate at very small angles to the fields, such that the threshold condition, E gamma 2mc(2)/sin theta is just barely satisfied when they pair produce. Threshold effects on the pair production attenuation coefficient, which are due to the discreteness of the e(+)e(-) Landau states, must therefore be considered when computing the mean free paths of curvature radiation photons in pulsar magnetic fields. These effects, which are not incorporated in the asymptotic expression for the attenuation coefficient, have some interesting consequences for pulsar models. Since pair production is suppressed near threshold, the photon mean free paths are longer than previously thought. In magnetic fields approximately 6x10 approximately G, the pairs tend to be produced in the ground state Landau level and will not synchrotron radiate. Since synchrotron radiation is an essential ingredient in the electromagnetic cascades which produce low energy pairs above the acceleration region, pulsars with very high magnetic fields may not produce many pairs.

Thresholds for the onset of fluid and magnetofluid turbulence

Linear stability calculations conducted in plasma physics are based on the theory of hydrodynamic stability of neutral fluids. The present investigation is concerned with the validity of procedures based on linear stability analysis in six much-studied situations. All have the property that the fluid goes from laminar to turbulent at critical values of some dimensionless number, such as the Reynolds number or the Rayleigh number. The question is, at what threshold values of the dimensionless number do the unstable motions set in, and can these thresholds be predicted by a linear analysis of the stability of the laminar state as the threshold is approached from the stable side. In three cases linear stability analysis clearly seems to fail. These cases include Plane Poiseuille Flow, Plane Couette Flow, and Cylindrical Pipe Flow (Hagen-Poiseuille Flow). Situations in which predictions provided by linear stability analysis are correct are related to Rotating Couette Flow, Thermally-Driven Convection, and Instability of Laminar Boundary Layers.

Threshold kinetics of a solar-simulator-pumped iodine laser

A model of the chemical kinetics of the n-C3F7I solar-simulator-pumped iodine laser is utilized to study the major kinetic processes associated with the threshold behavior of this experimental system. Excited-state diffusion to the cell wall is the dominant limiting factor below 5 torr. Excited-state diffusion to the cell wall is the dominant limiting factor below 5 torr. Excited-state recombination with the alkyl radical and quenching by the parent gas control threshold at higher pressures. Treatment of the hyperfine splitting and uncertainty in the pressure broadening are important factors in fixing the threshold level. In spite of scatter in the experimental data caused by instabilities in the simulator high-pressure high-pressure arc, reasonable agreement is achieved between the model and experiment. Model parameters arrived at are within the uncertainty range of values found in the literature.

A critical study of the crack closure effect on near-threshold fatigue crack growth

Crack closure in the near-crack-tip region has been considered to be an important contribution to the development of a crack-growth threshold for macroscopic cracks. Recent analytical work, however, has suggested that closure well back of the tip may be the controlling factor. In order to check on this possibility, material has been machined away far behind the crack tip in order to eliminate long-range closure. Removal of this material did not eliminate the threshold, but did lower the threshold level by approximately 10 percent for tests conducted on 6.3 mm-thick X7090-T6 powder metallurgy aluminum alloy.

Regional landform thresholds

Remote sensing technology allows us to recognize manifestations of regional thresholds, especially in the spatial characteristics of process agents. For example, a change in river channel pattern over a short distance reflects a threshold alteration in the physical controls of discharge and/or sediment. It is, therefore, a valuable indication of conditions as they exist. However, we probably will have difficulty determining whether the systemic parameters are now close to threshold conditions at which a different change will occur. This, of course, is a temporal and magnitude problem which is difficult to solve from the spatial characteristics.

Electron-atom spin asymmetry and two-electron photodetachment - Addenda to the Coulomb-dipole threshold law

Temkin (1982) has derived the ionization threshold law based on a Coulomb-dipole theory of the ionization process. The present investigation is concerned with a reexamination of several aspects of the Coulomb-dipole threshold law. Attention is given to the energy scale of the logarithmic denominator, the spin-asymmetry parameter, and an estimate of alpha and the energy range of validity of the threshold law, taking into account the result of the two-electron photodetachment experiment conducted by Donahue et al. (1984).

Pair production near threshold in pulsar magnetic fields

In Pulsar polar cap models, curvature radiation gamma-rays produce e(+) e(-) pairs in the strong magnetic fields near the surface of the neutron star. While these gamma rays havea energies E sub gamma mc(2), they also propagate at very small angies to the fields, such that the threshold condition, E gamma 2mc(2)/sin theta is just barely satisfied when they pair produce. Threshold effects on the pair production attenuation coefficient, which are due to the discreteness of the e(+) e(-) Landau states, must therefore be considered when computing the mean free paths of curvature radiation photons in pulsar magnetic fields. These effects, which are not incorporated in the asymptotic expression for the attenuation coefficient, have some interesting consequences for pulsar models. Since pair production is suppressed near threshold, the photon mean free paths are longer than previously thought. In magnetic fields greater than approximately 6 x 10 to the 12th G, the pairs tend to be produced in the ground state Landau level and will not synchrotron radiate. Since synchrotron radiation is an essential ingredient in the eiectromagnetic cascades which produce low energy pairs above the acceleration region, pulsars with very high magnetic fields may not produce many pairs.

s-wave threshold in electron attachment - Observations and cross sections in CCl4 and SF6 at ultralow electron energies

The threshold photoionization method was used to study low-energy electron attachment phenomena in and cross sections of CCl4 and SF6 compounds, which have applications in the design of gaseous dielectrics and diffuse discharge opening switches. Measurements were made at electron energies from below threshold to 140 meV at resolutions of 6 and 8 meV. A narrow resolution-limited structure was observed in electron attachment to CCl4 and SF6 at electron energies below 10 meV, which is attributed to the divergence of the attachment cross section in the limit epsilon, l approaches zero. The results are compared with experimental collisional-ionization results, electron-swarm unfolded cross sections, and earlier threshold photoionization data.

The voltage threshold for arcing for solar cells in LEO: Flight and ground test results

Ground and flight results of solar cell arcing in low Earth orbit (LEO) conditions are compared and interpreted. It is shown that an apparent voltage threshold for arcing may be produced by a strong power law dependence of arc rate on voltage, combined with a limited observation time. The change in this apparent threshold with plasma density is a reflection of the density dependence of the arc rate. A nearly linear dependence of arc rate on density is inferred from the data. A real voltage threshold for arcing for 2 by 2 cm solar cells may exist however, independent of plasma density, near -230 V relative to the plasma. Here, arc rates may change by more than an order of magnitude for a change of only 30 V in array potential. For 5.9 by 5.9 solar cells, the voltage dependence of the arc rate is steeper, and the data are insufficient to indicate the existence of an arcing increased by an atomic oxygen plasma, as is found in LEO, and by arcing from the backs of welded-through substrates.

Displacement thresholds in central and peripheral vision during tracking

The effects of stimulus duration and angular velocity on a subject's judgment of displacement threshold are examined. Twenty-six male subjects between 17-45 years with uncorrected 20:20 distance acuity and normal color perception and stereopsis studied a series of forced choice, paired comparison trials in which a long, thin, collimated horizontally oriented line moved downward through 12 angles ranging from 0.6-60 arcmin and judged which stimulus moved in each pair. The displacements were produced by 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 sec stimulus duration and 2.5, 5, 10, and 15 deg/sec angular rates. Stimulus velocity, stimulus duration, mean threshold displacement, and mean confidence results are analyzed. It is observed that displacement judgment accuracy is increased with increasing stimulus duration. The data are compared with the results of Johnson and Leibowitz (1976) and Johnson and Scobey (1982), and good correlation with the Johnson and Leibowitz data is detected. The data reveal that threshold is based on a constant stimulus velocity over this range of durations and velocities. The data are applicable to the study of the final approach to landing of medium and large commercial jet aircraft.

Interlaminar shear fracture toughness and fatigue thresholds for composite materials

Static and cyclic end notched flexure tests were conducted on a graphite epoxy, a glass epoxy, and graphite thermoplastic to determine their interlaminar shear fracture toughness and fatigue thresholds for delamination in terms of limiting values of the mode II strain energy release rate, G-II, for delamination growth. The influence of precracking and data reduction schemes are discussed. Finite element analysis indicated that the beam theory calculation for G-II with the transverse shear contribution included was reasonably accurate over the entire range of crack lengths. Cyclic loading significantly reduced the critical G-II for delamination. A threshold value of the maximum cyclic G-II below which no delamination occurred after one million cycles was identified for each material. Also, residual static toughness tests were conducted on glass epoxy specimens that had undergone one million cycles without delamination. A linear mixed-mode delamination criteria was used to characterize the static toughness of several composite materials; however, a total G threshold criterion appears to characterize the fatigue delamination durability of composite materials with a wide range of static toughness.

On the turbulent heating and the threshold condition in the critical ionization velocity interaction

On the basis of the nonlinear treatment of the ion beam instability and the modified two-stream instability, threshold conditions for the critical ionization velocity interaction are derived. There are three different regimes of interaction: (1) additional ionization for relative velocities smaller than the critical velocity, (2) the self-sustained discharge for velocities greater than the critical velocity which indeed turns out as a sharp threshold, and (3) an explosive growth regime for velocities exceeding 1.5 times the critical velocity. Additional charge exchange collisions of ions and energy loss of electrons due to excitation do not change the basic threshold behavior but modify the value of the critical velocity.

Characterization of Mode 1 and Mode 2 delamination growth and thresholds in graphite/peek composites

Composite materials often fail by delamination. The onset and growth of delamination in AS4/PEEK, a tough thermoplastic matrix composite, was characterized for mode 1 and mode 2 loadings, using the Double Cantilever Beam (DCB) and the End Notched Flexure (ENF) test specimens. Delamination growth per fatigue cycle, da/dN, was related to strain energy release rate, G, by means of a power law. However, the exponents of these power laws were too large for them to be adequately used as a life prediction tool. A small error in the estimated applied loads could lead to large errors in the delamination growth rates. Hence strain energy release rate thresholds, G sub th, below which no delamination would occur were also measured. Mode 1 and 2 threshold G values for no delamination growth were found by monitoring the number of cycles to delamination onset in the DCB and ENF specimens. The maximum applied G for which no delamination growth had occurred until at least 1,000,000 cycles was considered the threshold strain energy release rate. Comments are given on how testing effects, facial interference or delamination front damage, may invalidate the experimental determination of the constants in the expression.

Ultralow threshold graded-index separate-confinement heterostructure single quantum well (Al, Ga) As lasers

Broad area graded-index separate-confinement heterostructure single quantum well lasers grown by molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE) with threshold current density as low as 93 A/sq cm (520 microns long) have been fabricated. Buried lasers formed from similarly structured MBE material with liquid phase epitaxy regrowth had threshold currents at submilliampere levels when high reflectivity coatings were applied to the end facets. A CW threshold current of 0.55 mA was obtained for a laser with facet reflectivities of about 80 percent, a cavity length of 120 micron, and an active region stripe width of 1 micron. These devices driven directly with logic level signals have switch-on delays less than 50 ps without any current prebias. Such lasers permit fully on-off switching while at the same time obviating the need for bias monitoring and feedback control.

Threshold computations for detection of failures in SISO systems with transfer function errors

The author considers the problem of detecting failures in SISO systems using analytic redundancy concepts. Since the models used are subject to error, a method of determining the detection thresholds that account for these errors is sought. The methodology presented utilizes a straightforward application of Parseval's relation to develop a threshold computation that is performed online as a function of the input signal. The threshold is set at a quiescent value to account for sensor noise and is adjusted (upward) according to the activity of the input signal. An application to detection of actuator failures is presented.
