Touring the Saturnian System

The Cassini mission to Saturn employs a Saturn Orbiter and a Titan probe to conduct an intensive investigation of the Saturnian system. The Cassini orbiter flies series of orbits incorporating flybys of the Saturnian satellites called the Satellite Tour.

Orbit determination sensitivity analysis for th Europa Clipper Mission tour

This paper will assess the sensitivity of OD delivery and knowledge performance for the current Europa Mission trajectory through parametric variation of a baseline tour navigation strategy.2 Variations of several parameters are run, one at a time, to determine the impact on spacecraft ephemeris uncertainties at OD knowledge, delivery, and encounter reconstruction times. There are two basic categories of sensitivity runs considered: variations of tracking data type and amount, and variations to dynamic parameters. The results of these parameter and data variations are compared against the values necessary to achieve accurate instrument pointing and observation planning.

New Tools for Tour Design: Swiss Cheese Plot, Invariant Funnel, and Resonant Encounter Map

We define a new set of tools for tour design introduced in previous work: the”Swiss Cheese Plot,” ”Invariant Funnel,” and ”Resonant Encounter Map.” These tools promise to be useful in designing, analyzing, and navigating low-energy trajectories through multi-body systems. We review and clarify methods for generating the swiss cheese plot and invariant funnels in the Circular Restricted Three-Body Problem. We introduce the resonant encounter map as a graphical representation of the three-body design space, similar to the pork-chop plot for the two-body problem. We also discuss some interesting characteristics of the resonant encounter map and its connection to the invariant manifolds of periodic libration orbit

Cassini tour navigation strategy

The Cassini-Huygens spacecraft was launched on October 15, 1997 as a joint NASA/ESA mission to explore Saturn. After a 7 year cruise the spacecraft will enter orbit around Saturn on 1 July 2004 for a 4 year investigation of the Saturnian system. The Cassini Navigation Team is responsible for designing the reference trajectory and conducting operations to realize this design. This paper describes the strategy for achieving project requirements, the characteristics of the Cassini navigation challenge, and the underlying assumptions.

Oppenheimer biographer tours Lab while movie is filmed locally

While a Hollywood movie crew filmed the Oppenheimer movie in Los Alamos these past few weeks, a special guest stopped by the Lab in between takes and chats with big-name actors. Director Thom Mason invited Kai Bird, co-author of American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer, to LANL while Bird was in town. The film’s director, Christopher Nolan, wrote the screenplay based on Bird’s Pulitzer Prize-winning biography, published in 2005. Oppenheimer was a physicist and the Lab’s first director of its wartime mission to secretly create the atomic bombs and help end World War II.
