Tutorial: angiocardiography, past and present

The contribution of X-ray methodology and angiocardiography in the ability to study cardiac and cardiovascular function is presented. Angiocardiography remains the most reliable method for determination of overall chamber size and shape particularly in the face of disease states of varying etiologies. It also presents the most accurate means for obtaining dimensional information concerning the heart and blood vessels without the use of surgery or attachment of transducers.

LISP: Data is program. A tutorial in LISP

A novel approach at teaching LISP to a novice was developed. The abstract data format is presented, emphasizing its real structure and its machine implantation. Then the technique of writing programs in the data language, and of interpreting them, is presented. Illustrative features are drawn from various extant LISP implementations.

A tutorial introduction to Very Long Base-line Interferometry (VLBI) using bandwidth synthesis

The basic principles underlying very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) are described by using bandwidth synthesis. The basic signal processing approach is detailed. Summarized results show the tradeoff of measurement accuracy with spanned bandwidth, source strength, antenna size and efficiency, system noise temperature, and data volume. Minimization of required antenna time for a given baseline measurement accuracy is also discussed.

Time domain measurement of frequency stability: A tutorial introduction

The theoretical basis behind the definition of frequency stability in the time domain is outlined. Various types of variances were examined. Their differences and interrelation are pointed out. Systems that are generally used in the measurement of these variances are described.

Computer hardware description languages - A tutorial

The paper introduces hardware description languages (HDL) as useful tools for hardware design and documentation. The capabilities and limitations of HDLs are discussed along with the guidelines needed in selecting an appropriate HDL. The directions for future work are provided and attention is given to the implementation of HDLs in microcomputers.

Optical systems engineering - A tutorial

The paper examines the use of the systems engineering approach in the design of optical systems, noting that the use of such an approach which involves an integrated interdisciplinary approach to the development of systems is most appropriate for optics. It is shown that the high precision character of optics leads to complex and subtle effects on optical system performance, resulting from structural, thermal dynamical, control system, and manufacturing and assembly considerations. Attention is given to communication problems that often occur among users and optical engineers due to the unique factors of optical systems. It is concluded that it is essential that the optics community provide leadership to resolve communication problems and fully formalize the field of optical systems engineering.

A tutorial on the CARE III approach to reliability modeling

The CARE 3 reliability model for aircraft avionics and control systems is described by utilizing a number of examples which frequently use state-of-the-art mathematical modeling techniques as a basis for their exposition. Behavioral decomposition followed by aggregration were used in an attempt to deal with reliability models with a large number of states. A comprehensive set of models of the fault-handling processes in a typical fault-tolerant system was used. These models were semi-Markov in nature, thus removing the usual restrictions of exponential holding times within the coverage model. The aggregate model is a non-homogeneous Markov chain, thus allowing the times to failure to posses Weibull-like distributions. Because of the departures from traditional models, the solution method employed is that of Kolmogorov integral equations, which are evaluated numerically.

Tutorial on multimode fiber optic wavelength division multiplexing

Optical wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems, with signals transmitted on different wavelengths through a single optical fiber, can have increased bandwidth and fault isolation properties over single wavelength optical systems. This paper considers two WDM system designs that might be used with multimode fibers and gives a general description of the components which could be used to implement the system. The components described are sources, multiplexers, demultiplexers, and detectors. Emphasis is given to the demultiplexer technique which is the major developmental component in the WDM system.

The LANDSAT Tutorial Workbook: Basics of Satellite Remote Sensing

Most of the subject matter of a full training course in applying remote sensing is presented in a self-teaching mode in this how-to manual which combines a review of basics, a survey of systems, and a treatment of the principles and mechanics of image analysis by computers, with a laboratory approach for learning to utilize the data through practical experiences. All relevant image products are included.
