ARM Aerial Facility (AAF) - Unmanned Aircraft Systems, Cloud Droplet Probe with QC and lat/lon/alt

The Cloud Droplet Probe (CDP) is designed to measure cloud droplet size distribution from 2 µm to 50 µm. The CDP and an appropriate data system can also calculate various other parameters including particle concentrations, effective diameter (ED), Median Volume Diameter (MVD), and Liquid Water Content (LWC). The b1 level adds standard quality control flags, and merges in flight navigation data.

GreenSight WxHive Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) Atmospheric Profiling at the SGP Central Facility

The GreenSight WxHive is capable of flying multiple nanodrones simultaneously to provide spatiotemporal atmospheric sampling. During the WH2yMSIE campaign, the WxHive would fly up to 5 nanodrones at once, performing profiling within the planetary boundary layer over the ARM SGP Central Facility site. The measurements provided by the WxHive include latitude, longitude, altitude, pressure, temperature, humidity, and wind speed and direction. See the attached WeatherHive User Guide for more details about the instrument and measurements.

Detecting gas leaks using unmanned aerial vehicles

Methods, systems and computer program products for detecting gas leaks using a drone are provided. Aspects include capturing a first set of data regarding a presence of a gas in the geographic area while flying along the initial flight path. Aspects also include creating secondary flight paths through regions in the geographic area in which the presence of the gas exceeds a threshold amount and capturing a second set of data regarding a concentration of the gas in the one or more regions while flying along the secondary flight paths. Aspects further include capturing wind data while flying along the initial and second flight paths and creating a three-dimensional gas plume model for gas leaks identified in the geographic area based on the first set of data, the second set of data and the wind data, wherein the three-dimensional gas plume model identifies a source of the gas leaks.

Method and system for determining a geographical location of an unmanned aerial vehicle flown in proximity to a power grid

A method for determining geolocation of a UAV near a power grid includes detecting, via a transceiver, a carrier signal transmitted from a first grid node to identify the node's fixed geolocation. A response signal may be transmitted from a second grid node in response to the carrier signal to identify a fixed geolocation of the second grid node, or the UAV may process the carrier signal. A processor determines time-of-flight of the carrier signal, e.g., using the response signal, and derives the UAV's geolocation using the time-of-flight. Determining time-of-flight may include referencing a lookup table indexed by time-of-arrival at the transceiver of the modulated carrier and response signals. A timestamp may indicate time-of-transmission of the carrier and response signals, respectively. Deriving geolocation may include subtracting time-of-transmission of the response signal from that of the carrier signal. A system includes the processor and transceiver.
