A machine-learning-driven data labeling pipeline for scientific analysis in MLExchange

This study introduces a novel labeling pipeline to accelerate the labeling process of scientific data sets by using artificial intelligence (AI)-guided tagging techniques. This pipeline includes a set of interconnected web-based graphical user interfaces (GUIs), where Data Clinic and MLCoach enable the preparation of machine learning (ML) models for data reduction and classification, respectively, while Label Maker is used for label assignment. Throughout this pipeline, data can be accessed through a direct connection to a file system or through Tiled for access through Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP). Our experimental results present three use cases where this labeling pipeline has been instrumental for the study of large X-ray scattering data sets in the area of pattern recognition, the remote analysis of resonant soft X-ray scattering data and the fine-tuning process of foundation models. These use cases highlight the labeling capabilities of this pipeline, including the ability to label large data sets in a short period of time, to perform remote data analysis while minimizing data movement and to enhance the fine-tuning process of complex ML models with human involvement.

Hy-DAT: A Tool to Address Hydropower Modeling Gaps Using Interdependency, Efficiency Curves, and Unit Dispatch Models

As the power system continues to be flooded with intermittent resources, it becomes more important to accurately assess the role of hydro and its impact on the power grid. While hydropower generation has been studied for decades, dependency of power generation on water availability and constraints in hydro operation are not well represented in power system models used in the planning and operation of large-scale interconnection studies. There are still multiple modeling gaps that need to be addressed; if not, they can lead to inaccurate operation and planning reliability studies, and consequently to unintentional load shedding or even blackouts. As a result, it is very important thathydropower is represented correctly in both steady-state and dynamic power system studies. In this paper, we discuss the development and use of the Hydrological Dispatch and Analysis Tool (Hy-DAT) as an interactive graphical user interface (GUI), that uses a novel methodology to address the hydropower modeling gaps like water availability and inter-dependency using a database, and algorithms, to generate accurate representative models for power system simulation.

Disruption of Commercial Solar Inverter System by TLS Proxy Man-in-the-Middle Attack

Transport Layer Security (TLS) is a cryptographic protocol that encrypts communication data, providing end-to-end communication encryption and authentication. Currently, TLS is widely adopted for securing communication between servers and end devices, including solar inverter systems. Therefore, users/operators can securely access the solar inverters through a web user interface (WebUI) application programmable interface (API) on a PC or server over TLS-enabled Wi-Fi or Ethernet. However, the security of the TLS-based network becomes compromised if it is breached by a TLS proxy man-in-the-middle (MITM) exploit. This report explores potential vulnerabilities in a commercial solar inverter system that leverages a TLS proxy MITM and discusses the impacts through assume-breached penetration testing. Furthermore, the paper explores recommended mitigation methods against the TLS proxy MITM exploit in solar inverters.

Spatial-Temporal PV Hosting Capacity Estimation and Evaluation

Evaluating Photovoltaic Hosting Capacity (PVHC) is an essential step in the process of integrating solar energy into power grids, particularly when focusing on the distribution network (DN) as the primary integration target. PVHC needs to be investigated, especially in cases where the grids are unbalanced, and their operational conditions vary spatially and temporally. This motivation prompted us to propose a scalable model tailored to this application. In this paper, we applied linearization to the alternating current optimal power flow (AC-OPF) and solar inverters, transforming the original problem into a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) problem. Additionally, we accounted for the battery energy storage system (BESS) as a time-coupling factor for calculating PVHC. We then compared the PVHC results between the IEEE-13 bus and SMART-DS San Francisco (SFO) cases and discussed the extent to which BESS can enhance the PVHC of a DN. Furthermore, we designed a web-based graphical visualization for the SFO case, enabling user interaction with raw data and simulation results on a map through a graphical user interface (GUI). In summary, our results and findings provide valuable insights for future three-phase unbalanced AC-OPF PVHC practices and their visualization.

Hardware-in-the-Loop Testing of Wide-Area Damping Controller for Field Implementation in Large-scale Power Grid

In our previous work, an adaptive measurement-driven wide-area damping controller (WADC) for suppressing inter-area oscillations has been proposed and a hardware prototype was developed and validated through hardware-in-the-loop tests. As a continuation of the work, this paper introduces a WADC software prototype to handle the realistic challenges for field implementation in the control room of the power grid. The WADC software is developed and operated as an openPDC adapter with a graphical user interface (GUI) to monitor the WADC inputs and output, the communication delays and other variables. The software prototype has been fully tested through an enhanced hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) test setup. Its performance is verified under various realistic communication uncertainties, such as random time delays and data losses, with different communication protocols. The experiment results have proven the WADC software can deliver sufficient damping to suppress the targeted oscillation mode in handling various communication uncertainties for future field deployment.

Modification and analysis of context-specific genome-scale metabolic models: methane-utilizing microbial chassis as a case study

ABSTRACT Context-specific genome-scale model (CS-GSM) reconstruction is becoming an efficient strategy for integrating and cross-comparing experimental multi-scale data to explore the relationship between cellular genotypes, facilitating fundamental or applied research discoveries. However, the application of CS modeling for non-conventional microbes is still challenging. Here, we present a graphical user interface that integrates COBRApy, EscherPy, and RIPTiDe, Python-based tools within the BioUML platform, and streamlines the reconstruction and interrogation of the CS genome-scale metabolic frameworks via Jupyter Notebook. The approach was tested using -omics data collected for Methylotuvimicrobium alcaliphilum 20Z R , a prominent microbial chassis for methane capturing and valorization. We optimized the previously reconstructed whole genome-scale metabolic network by adjusting the flux distribution using gene expression data. The outputs of the automatically reconstructed CS metabolic network were comparable to manually optimized i IA409 models for Ca-growth conditions. However, the CS model questions the reversibility of the phosphoketolase pathway and suggests higher flux via primary oxidation pathways. The model also highlighted unresolved carbon partitioning between assimilatory and catabolic pathways at the formaldehyde-formate node. Only a very few genes and only one enzyme with a predicted function in C1 metabolism, a homolog of the formaldehyde oxidation enzyme ( fae1-2 ), showed a significant change in expression in La-growth conditions. The CS-GSM predictions agreed with the experimental measurements under the assumption that the Fae1-2 is a part of the tetrahydrofolate-linked pathway. The cellular roles of the tungsten (W)-dependent formate dehydrogenase ( fdhAB ) and fae homologs ( fae1-2 and fae3 ) were investigated via mutagenesis. The phenotype of the f dhAB mutant followed the model prediction. Furthermore, a more significant reduction of the biomass yield was observed during growth in La-supplemented media, confirming a higher flux through formate. M. alcaliphilum 20Z R mutants lacking fae1-2 did not display any significant defects in methane or methanol-dependent growth. However, contrary to fae1, the fae1-2 homolog failed to restore the formaldehyde-activating enzyme function in complementation tests. Overall, the presented data suggest that the developed computational workflow supports the reconstruction and validation of CS-GSM networks of non-model microbes. IMPORTANCE The interrogation of various types of data is a routine strategy to explore the relationship between genotype and phenotype. An efficient approach for integrating and cross-comparing experimental multi-scale data in the context of whole-genome-based metabolic network reconstruction becomes a powerful tool that facilitates fundamental and applied research discoveries. The present study describes the reconstruction of a context-specific (CS) model for the methane-utilizing bacterium, Methylotuvimicrobium alcaliphilum 20Z R . M. alcaliphilum 20Z R is becoming an attractive microbial platform for the production of biofuels, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and bio-sorbents for capturing atmospheric methane. We demonstrate that this pipeline can help reconstruct metabolic models that are similar to manually curated networks. Furthermore, the model is able to highlight previously overlooked pathways, thus advancing fundamental knowledge of non-model microbial systems or promoting their development toward biotechnological or environmental implementations.

stor4build

The EnergyPlus simulation engine supports modeling and simulation of thermal energy storage (TES) systems in several ways, including using the Python-EMS feature, which extends the operation of the engine with custom code written in Python. Creation of models using this feature can be tedious and error prone, with the connection of the model components to the Python code a particularly troublesome area. The stor4build Python package simplifies this process by modifying an input model to add a selected TES technology (implemented with the Python-EMS feature) and runs the simulation. The package leverages the OpenStudio middleware software development kit to automate this process as much as possible, eliminating potential errors and simplifying usage of EnergyPlus. The package provides objects, functions, and OpenStudio measures that implement the necessary operations to automate the creation of EnergyPlus models that integrate TES technologies with building systems. In addition, two user interfaces are provided: a command line interface and a web application programming interface. The automated process implemented by the package greatly simplifies the modeling and simulation process, allowing for parametric studies to be executed much more efficiently and effectively. The OpenStudio-based workflow is also very flexible and will allow for future additions of new technologies.
