Data Visualization: Augmented Reality

In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in developing new technologies for automated characterization and visualization of condition monitoring data. Augmented Reality (AR) is a technology that is being developed to improve such data visualization. Augmented reality has been defined as a technology that merges virtual and physical components in real-time, and in three dimensions. Wearable, commercially-available AR devices allow onsite engineers and technicians to perform inspection tasks with significantly more available information such as comparisons of past and present sensor and imager data, onsite data analysis and result displays, and various forms of metadata including technical drawings, previous inspection reports and maintenance histories, operation manuals, codes and standards, and holograms representing data analysis results superimposed onto the in situ monitored system.

Sound propagation in realistic interactive 3D scenes with parameterized sources using deep neural operators

We address the challenge of acoustic simulations in three-dimensional (3D) virtual rooms with parametric source positions, which have applications in virtual/augmented reality, game audio, and spatial computing. The wave equation can fully describe wave phenomena such as diffraction and interference. However, conventional numerical discretization methods are computationally expensive when simulating hundreds of source and receiver positions, making simulations with parametric source positions impractical. To overcome this limitation, we propose using deep operator networks to approximate linear wave-equation operators. This enables the rapid prediction of sound propagation in realistic 3D acoustic scenes with parametric source positions, achieving millisecond-scale computations. By learning a compact surrogate model, we avoid the offline calculation and storage of impulse responses for all relevant source/listener pairs. Our experiments, including various complex scene geometries, show good agreement with reference solutions, with root mean squared errors ranging from 0.02 to 0.10 Pa. Notably, our method signifies a paradigm shift as—to our knowledge—no prior machine learning approach has achieved precise predictions of complete wave fields within realistic domains.

Performance Evaluation of Augmented Teleoperation of Contact Manipulation Tasks

At Argonne National Laboratory, an enhanced telerobotic concept has been suggested by providing augmented virtual fixtures for precise and dexterous manipulation. The proposed technology incorporated a human-robot interface that can assist personnel on the processes of Deactivation and Decommissioning in sites of high radiation. It has been implemented on a dual-arm robot system, known as Baxter, by integrating the Robotic Operating System (ROS) with 3D sensors and visual-haptic operator interface. However, what remained before its practical utilization is the capability for precisely placing the virtual fixtures. To this end, the objectives involved camera calibration, which required hardware fabrication and setup, as well as modification and implementation of ROS. The goal of this Research and Development is to develop an augmented-reality- based operator interface for human-inclusive, intelligent, and autonomous robotic system for the Deactivation and Decommissioning (D and D) of radioactive sites. The objectives are to develop: Collaborative Robot; Multi-modal Mixed-Reality Human-Robot Interface; Intelligent and Autonomous Behaviors. In order to achieve this, Baxter's Head-Kinect camera and Left-Hand camera need to be calibrated to overlap the real environment with the simulated environment. Camera calibration, which is crucial for precisely placing the virtual fixtures, was successful after running the simulations. The real and simulated environments overlapped, permitting the utilization of augmented teleoperation and the dexterous manipulation of Baxter for D and D applications in nuclear sites. Future steps: Performance evaluation of augmented teleoperation of contact manipulation tasks: Multiple-Camera 3D Reconstruction and Automation. Oculus Interface: Augmented reality and machine learning for enhanced telerobotic operation (Augmented Tele-autonomy): Machine-learning techniques for complex and flexible autonomous robotic behaviors. Interactive remote operation of robotic systems. Mesh cutting with simulation and real robot.

A Digital Twin Framework for Liquid-cooled Supercomputers as Demonstrated at Exascale

We present ExaDigiT, an open-source framework for developing comprehensive digital twins of liquid-cooled supercomputers. It integrates three main modules: (1) a resource allocator and power simulator, (2) a transient thermo-fluidic cooling model, and (3) an augmented reality model of the supercomputer and central energy plant. The framework enables the study of "what-if" scenarios, system optimizations, and virtual prototyping of future systems. Using Frontier as a case study, we demonstrate the framework's capabilities by replaying six months of system telemetry for systematic verification and validation. Such a comprehensive analysis of a liquid-cooled exascale supercomputer is the first of its kind. ExaDigiT elucidates complex transient cooling system dynamics, runs synthetic or real workloads, and predicts energy losses due to rectification and voltage conversion. Throughout our paper, we present lessons learned to benefit HPC practitioners developing similar digital twins. We envision the digital twin will be a key enabler for sustainable, energy-efficient supercomputing.

Light-field control of real and virtual charge carriers

We report light-driven electronic excitation is a cornerstone for energy and information transfer. In the interaction of intense and ultrafast light fields with solids, electrons may be excited irreversibly, or transiently during illumination only. As the transient electron population cannot be observed after the light pulse is gone, it is referred to as virtual, whereas the population that remains excited is called real. Virtual charge carriers have recently been associated with high-harmonic generation and transient absorption, but photocurrent generation may stem from real as well as virtual charge carriers. However, a link between the generation of the carrier types and their importance for observables of technological relevance is missing. Here we show that real and virtual charge carriers can be excited and disentangled in the optical generation of currents in a gold–graphene–gold heterostructure using few-cycle laser pulses. Depending on the waveform used for photoexcitation, real carriers receive net momentum and propagate to the gold electrodes, whereas virtual carriers generate a polarization response read out at the gold–graphene interfaces. On the basis of these insights, we further demonstrate a proof of concept of a logic gate for future lightwave electronics. Our results offer a direct means to monitor and excite real and virtual charge carriers. Individual control over each type of carrier will markedly increase the integrated-circuit design space and bring petahertz signal processing closer to reality.

Speed vs Accuracy: Effect on Ligand Pose Accuracy of Varying Box Size and Exhaustiveness in AutoDock Vina

Abstract Structure‐based virtual high‐throughput screening involves docking chemical libraries to targets of interest. A parameter pertinent to the accuracy of the resulting pose is the root mean square deviation (RMSD) from a known crystallographic structure, i. e., the ‘docking power’. Here, using a popular algorithm, Autodock Vina, as a model program, we evaluate the effects of varying two common docking parameters: the box size (the size of docking search space) and the exhaustiveness of the global search (the number of independent runs starting from random ligand conformations) on the RMSD from the PDBbind v2017 refined dataset of experimental protein‐ligand complexes. Although it is clear that exhaustiveness is an important parameter, there is wide variation in the values used, with variation between 1 and >100. We, therefore, evaluated a combination of cubic boxes of different sizes and five exhaustiveness values (1, 8, 25, 50, 75, 100) within the range of those commonly adopted. The results show that the default exhaustiveness value of 8 performs well overall for most box sizes. In contrast, for all box sizes, but particularly for large boxes, an exhaustiveness value of 1 led to significantly higher median RMSD (mRMSD) values. The docking power was slightly improved with an exhaustiveness of 25, but the mRMSD changes little with values higher than 25. Therefore, although low exhaustiveness is computationally faster, the results are more likely to be far from reality, and, conversely, values >25 led to little improvement at the expense of computational resources. Overall, we recommend users to use at least the default exhaustiveness value of 8 for virtual screening calculations.

Augmented reality to guide pedestrian evacuation in earthquake events

Augmented Reality is a promising technology to support safe pedestrian evacuation from buildings during earthquakes. The widespread availability of phone cameras makes this idea feasible. QR codes, for instance, can place virtual three-dimensional objects to guide people along a prescribed route. In this work, a prototypical system based on this premise was created in response to the 2020 sudden surge in seismic activity in Puerto Rico. The results point towards feasibility as well as to a series of areas that require improvement for a real-life implementation.

Sim2Real Autonomous Robotic Exploration [Poster]

Autonomous robots offer promising solutions for exploration in environments that are inaccessible or hazardous to humans. Despite this, physical training of such robots is often constrained by safety risks, high cost or limited accessibility. This project presents an end-to-end simulation to reality pipeline leveraging Nvidia Isaac Sim and Boston Dynamics' Spot to enable autonomous navigation in indoor environments. A reinforcement learning policy is first trained using Nvidia Isaac Lab to establish Spot's locomotion pattern. Virtual LiDAR sensors are then integrated to perform SLAM-based navigation using simulated odometry. Finally, the simulated navigation scheme is transferred to a physical Spot robot to inspect and record images of a real-world room by repeating the learnt trajectory. The proposed framework highlights the potential of scalable training in simulation and reliable deployment in physical environments. Future directions include dynamic trajectory generation in unseen and challenging environments and integration of environmental sensing like temperature, radiation or humidity via sensor and material simulation.

Implementing Mixed Reality Tools to Support Mission Delivery at Hanford - 20520

Mission Support Alliance's (MSA) Public Works and Information Systems organizations have been working with Microsoft Corporation to develop and implement mixed reality operational solutions using their HoloLens technology. This collaborative effort is intended to drive innovative solutions and significantly improve MSA's efficiency in performing work at the Hanford Site. HoloLens, a mixed reality tool, is a commercial off-the-shelf technology that combines a head-mounted viewing screen with applications to help people and organizations learn, communicate, and collaborate more effectively through the use of mixed reality. https://microsoft.com/en-us/hololens MSA's initial pilot successfully demonstrated its ability to use mixed reality utilizing HoloLens' advanced features in a variety of ways, illustrating the potential efficiency gains previously stated as goals of this pilot. These achievements include the development of proprietary technology that allows synchronization between a HoloLens device and a mobile device or alternate global positioning system (GPS) device. This synchronization enables the HoloLens device to access real time GPS location data anywhere on the Hanford Site. This real time location data, combined with MSA's improved Hanford Geographical Information System (GIS) data, enables the mixed reality pilot application to identify underground utility systems as well as related utility attributes. This ability will aid utility workers in several areas, including excavation activities, the placement of large cranes, identifying interactions and conflicts with future underground utility placements and, eventually, recognizing and de-conflicting tank waste transfer system valve alignments. The HoloLens mixed reality application is also able to provide full or small scale holographic images of a facility's digital twin. This feature will allow MSA's Water and Sewer Utilities team to train and validate procedures associated with the new water treatment facility virtually, before it is constructed. This reduces the amount of time it takes to complete the training and procedure validation, and accelerates the overall construction schedule. (authors)

HydrogenAR: Interactive Data-Driven Presentation of Dispenser Reliability: Preprint

When delivering presentations to a co-located audience, we typically use slides with text and 2D graphics to complement the spoken narrative. Though presentations have largely been explored on 2D media, augmented reality (AR) allows presentation designers to add data and augmentations to existing physical infrastructure on display. This could provide a more engaging experience to the audience and support comprehension. With HydrogenAR, we present a novel application that leverages the benefits of data-driven storytelling with those of AR to explain the unique challenges of hydrogen dis- penser reliability. Utilizing physical props, situated data, and virtual augmentations and animations, HydrogenAR serves as a unique presentation tool, particularly critical for stakeholders, tour groups, and VIPs. HydrogenAR is a product of multiple collaborative de- sign iterations with a local Hydrogen Fuel research team and is evaluated through interviews with team members and a user study with end-users to evaluate the usability and quality of the interactive AR experience. Through this work, we provide design considera- tions for AR data-driven presentations and discuss how AR could be used for innovative content delivery beyond traditional slide-based presentations.
