DyFe 2 O 4 : A new trigonal rare-earth ferrite grown by molecular-beam epitaxy

Using epitaxial stabilization, we synthesized single-phase (001)-oriented thin films of DyFe 2 O 4+x on (111) MgAl 2 O 4 substrates by molecular-beam epitaxy. The metastable DyFe 2 O 4 polymorph formed is isostructural to known trigonal ferrimagnetic RFe 2 O 4 phases with space group $R\bar{3}m$, where R = Ho to Lu. The epitaxial DyFe 2 O 4 thin films have two in-plane orientation relationships: [100] DyFe 2 O 4 || [$2\bar{1}1$] MgAl 2 O 4 plus a twin variant related by a 60° in-plane rotation. DyFe 2 O 4 is not bulk stable and has never been synthesized before. Indeed, it has been predicted to be on the edge energetically of what may be possible to stabilize. The fact that the RFe 2 O 4 phase is stable for all elements leading up to dysprosium (Ho–Lu) leads us to believe that DyFe 2 O 4 could be a “remnant metastable phase,” one which, given the right thermodynamic conditions, could become the lowest free energy phase. We find that although we are able to get structurally very close to $R\bar{3}m$ DyFe 2 O 4 , the films are not stoichiometric as they have an increased c lattice parameter, indicative of extra oxygen as is sometimes seen in other RFe2O4 phases. The unintended surplus oxygen opens questions regarding what may be achievable using such tricks as epitaxial stabilization to access metastable phases and whether this indeed constitutes “remnant metastability.”

Superconducting phase of Ti x O y thin films grown by molecular beam epitaxy

Here we investigate the complex relationship between the growth conditions and the structural and transport properties of Ti x O y thin films grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Transport properties ranging from metallicity to superconductivity and insulating states are stabilized by effectively tuning the O/Ti ratio via the Ti flux rate and the O partial pressure P Ox for films grown on (0001)-Al 2 O 3 substrates at 850° C. A cubic c-TiO 1±δ buffer layer is formed for low O/Ti ratios, while a corundum cr-Ti 2 O 3 layer is formed under higher-oxidizing conditions. Metallicity is observed for c-TiO 1-δ buffer layers. The superconducting γ -Ti 3 O 5 Magnéli phase is found to nucleate on a c-TiO 1-δ buffer for intermediate POx conditions, and an insulator-superconducting transition is observed at 4.5 K (T$^{onset}_{C}$ = 6K) for 85 nm thick films. Strain relaxation of γ -Ti 3 O 5 occurs with increasing film thickness and correlates with a thickness-dependent increase in T C observed for Ti x O y thin films.

Collaborative R&D with REEL Solar Inc (REEL) to Understand and Overcome Performance Limitations in CdTe Solar Cells: Cooperative Research and Development (Final Report)

This CRADA will focus on processing, advanced characterization, and testing of photovoltaic materials and devices to understand and improve REEL CdTe solar technology. This will include examining process variations and different buffer, absorber, and contact layers from REEL and NLR to maximize performance. The unique and diverse advanced characterization tools at NLR, such as time-resolved photoluminescence, capacitance-voltage measurements, electron beam scattered diffraction, cathodoluminescence, electron microscopy, TOF-SIMS, and other measurements will be applied to characterize REEL processing to improve understanding and guide experimental directions. Accelerated stability and potential induced degradation tests will be used to analyze metastability, short-and-long term degradation, and improve bankability. A second and major thrust this period will be joint development of Si/CdTe tandem solar cells to overcome industry wide terrestrial solar efficiency limits with the two lowest cost and manufacturable solar materials today. This will include developing novel transparent back contacts that can be incorporated into tandem structures and other novel solar applications, detailed analysis of designs and configurations for CdTe/Si tandem modules, and prototyping REEL CdTe Technology with Si bottom cells in tandem structures.

X-ray spectra of Hercules X-1. 2: Intrinsic beam

The X-ray spectrum of Hercules X-1 was observed in the energy range 2-24 keV with sufficient temporal resolution to allow detailed study of spectral correlations with the 1.24 sec pulse phase. A region of spectral hardening which extends over approximately the 1/10 pulse phase may be associated with the underlying beam. The pulse shape stability and its asymmetry relative to this intrinsic beam are discussed.

The Use of Heavy Ion Radiation as an Analog for Space Radiation Environment and Its Effects on Drug Stability

While it is common knowledge that electromagnetic radiation such as x-rays and gamma rays affect physical-chemical characteristics (PC) of compounds in addition to their toxic and mutagenic effects on biological systems, there are no reports on the effects of cosmic radiation encountered during space missions on stability of pharmaceuticals. Alterations in PC of drug formulations can adversely affect treatment with medications in space. Preliminary evaluation of stability and shelf-life of select pharmaceuticals (12) flown on space missions revealed that 37% and 40% of the formulations failed to meet USP requirements after shuttle and ISS flights, respectively. Based on these results, the current investigation is designed to examine the effect of proton (P) and heavy ion (Fe) radiation on 20 pharmaceutical preparations flown aboard the shuttle and ISS. The objectives of this project are: 1) Examine susceptibility of pharmaceuticals to short acute bouts of high intensity ionizing radiation species encountered during space flights; 2) Estimate extent of degradation of susceptible formulations as a function of intensity of each beam (P & Fe); and 3) compare and contrast the effects of single beam irradiation to that of a combined beam (P + Fe) that simulates space craft environment on drug stability. Irradiations were conducted at the Brookhaven National Laboratories (BNL) with beam strengths of 10 cGy, 10 or 50Gy of P and Fe beams separately. Preliminary evaluation of results revealed a reduction in the chemical content of label claim ranging 12-55 % for Augmentin, 7% for promethzine tablets and 9% for ciprofloxacin ointment. These results are in agreement, although less in magnitude than those observed during space flight and after gamma irradiation.
