The optimization of Ga (1-x)Al (x)As-GaAs solar cells for air mass zero operation and a study of Ga (1-x)Al (x)As-GaAs solar cells at high temperatures, phase 1

The three types of solar cells investigated were: (1) one consisting of a nGaAs substrate, a Zn doped pGaAs region, and a Zn doped Ga(1-x)Al(x)As layer, (2) one consisting of an nGaAs substrate, a Ge doped pGaAs region, and a pGa(1-x)Al(x)As upper layer, and (3) one consisting of an n+GaAs substrate, an nGa(1-x)Al(X)As region, a pGa(1-x)Bl(X) As region, and a pGa(1-y)Al(y)As upper layer. In all three cases, the upper alloy layer is thin and of high Al composition in order to obtain high spectral response over the widest possible range of photon energies. Spectral response, capacitance-voltage, current-voltage, diffusion length, sunlight (or the equivalent)-efficiency, and efficiency-temperature measurements were made as a function of device parameters in order to analyze and optimize the solar cell behavior.

Enhanced magnetic and optical properties of Y 3 Fe 5 O 12 (YIG) films with Au nanoinclusions

Y 3 Fe 5 O 12 (YIG) thin films are well known for their ferrimagnetic insulating property and low Gilbert damping coefficient (α), allowing them to be used for various spintronic applications and as magneto-optical isolators for photonic devices. Instead of doping, incorporation of plasmonic metals as nanoinclusions could be a promising route for improved magneto-optical coupling properties. In this work, YIG–Au nanocomposites have been deposited with ferrimagnetic insulating YIG as the matrix and Au nanoinclusions which introduce plasmonic absorption, optical anisotropy, and hyperbolic properties. Films with varying Au nanoinclusion densities have been processed and annealed to compare with the as-deposited ones. The films that had low Au nanoinclusion density and were annealed presented a lower magnetic damping coefficient of 2.84 × 10 −4 than the pure YIG film (9.66 × 10 −4 ). The as-deposited film with the highest Au density shows the strongest hyperbolic properties among all samples. These results demonstrate that both magnetic damping and optical properties can be tuned through deposition conditions in YIG–Au nanocomposite thin films, allowing for a balance of both properties. This YIG–Au nanocomposite system presents promising potential in next-generation opto-spintronic devices.

Cr.sup.4+-doped mixed alloy laser materials and lasers and methods using the materials

A laser medium includes a single crystal of Cr.sup.4+:Mg.sub.2-xM.sub.xSi.sub.1-yA.sub.yO.sub.4, where, where M is a bivalent ion having an ionic radius larger than Mg.sup.2+, and A is a tetravalent ion having an ionic radius larger than Si.sup.4+. In addition, either a) 0.ltoreq.x<2 and 0<y<1 or b) 0<x<2 and y is 0 or 1 with the proviso that if M is Ca.sup.2+ and x=1 then y is not 0. The laser medium can be used in a laser device, such as a tunable near infrared (NIR) laser.

Superconductivity in the Parent Infinite-Layer Nickelate NdNiO 2

We report evidence for superconductivity with onset temperatures up to 11 K in thin films of the infinite-layer nickelate parent compound NdNiO 2 . A combination of oxide molecular beam epitaxy and atomic hydrogen reduction yields samples with high crystallinity and low residual resistivities, a substantial fraction of which exhibit superconducting transitions. We survey a large series of samples with a variety of techniques, including electrical transport, scanning transmission electron microscopy, x-ray absorption spectroscopy, and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, to investigate the possible origins of superconductivity. We propose that superconductivity could be intrinsic to the undoped infinite-layer nickelates but suppressed by disorder due to a possibly sign-changing order parameter, a finding which would necessitate a reconsideration of the nickelate phase diagram. Another possible hypothesis is that the parent materials can be hole doped from randomly dispersed apical oxygen atoms, which would suggest an alternative pathway for achieving superconductivity. Doping-induced spin reorientation in kagome magnet TmMn 6 ⁢Sn 6

The kagome-lattice compounds RMn 6 Sn 6 (R is a rare-earth element), where the Mn atoms form a kagome net in the basal plane, are currently attracting a great deal of attention as they have been shown to host complex magnetic textures and electronic topological states strongly sensitive to the choice of the R atom. Among the magnetic R atoms, TmMn 6 Sn 6 orders with the easy-plane magnetization forming a complex magnetic spiral along the c axis. Previous neutron studies carried out on polycrystalline samples found that Ga doping changes the magnetic anisotropy from easy-plane to easy-axis. Here, in this study, we present magnetic and magnetotransport measurements on a single crystal and first-principles calculations in the doping series of TmMn 6 Sn 6-x Ga x . We find that the magnetic properties are highly sensitive even to a small concentration of Ga. With minimal Ga substitution, the easy-plane anisotropy is maintained, which gradually changes to the easy-axis anisotropy with increasing Ga. We discuss these observations with respect to the effect of Ga doping on magnetocrystalline anisotropy and Tm crystal field.

Velocity overshoot effect on a short-gate microwave MESFET

The device parameters of short-gate GaAs and InP FETs have been found to be dependent on the nonequilibrium velocity overshoot phenomenon. Both saturation velocity and critical field are found to be larger for shorter gates. The v-E characteristics of Pucel et al. (1975) are modified. The cutoff frequency and other parameters for GaAs, InP, and Si are given as a function of gate length and bias. The cutoff frequency of InP MESFETs with a doping density of 10 to the 17th per cu cm is only 20% higher than those of equivalent GaAs MESFETs at 300 K. Comparison with other work is also presented.

Sixty GHz IMPATT diode development

The objective of this program is to develop 60 GHz GaAs IMPATT Diodes suitable for communications applications. The performance goal of the 60 GHz IMPATT is 1W CW output power with a conversion efficiency of 15 percent and 10 year life time. During the course of the program, double drift (DD) GaAs IMPATT Diodes have been developed resulting in the state of the art performance at V band frequencies. A CW output power of 1.12 W was demonstrated at 51.9 GHz with 9.7 percent efficiency. The best conversion efficiency achieved was 15.3 percent. V band DD GaAs IMPATTs were developed using both small signal and large signal analyses. GaAs wafers of DD flat, DD hybrid, and DD Read profiles using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) were developed with excellent doping profile control. Wafer evaluation was routinely made by the capacitance versus voltage (C-V) measurement. Ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) analysis was also used for more detailed profile evaluation.

Electronic state and superconductivity of YBa2Cu3-xO7-y (M=Al,Zn and Sn) systems

A series of YBa2Cu(3-x)MxO(7-y) (M=Al,Zn and Sn) single phase samples were prepared, and the measurements of the crystal structure, oxygen content, electric resistivity, thermoelectric power, Mossbauer spectrum, XPS and superconductivity were performed. The experimental results of X ray powder diffraction, Mossbauer spectrum and oxygen content show that the Zn(2+) and the Al(3+) occupy the Cu(2) site in Cu-O planes and the Cu(1) site in Cu-O chains respectively, but the Sn(4+) occupies both the Cu(1) sites. As regards the properties in superconducting state, both the Zn(2+) and the Al(3+) depress T(sub c) strongly, but the Sn(4+) does not. As for the electronic transport properties in normal state, the system doped by Al(3+) displays a rapid increase of resistivity and some electron localization-like effects, and the thermoelectric power enhances obviously; the series contained Zn(2+) almost shows no changes of electric resistivity but the sign of the thermoelectric power is reversed. Microstructural and preliminary optical and microwave characterization of erbium-doped CaMoO 4 thin films

This work explores erbium-doped calcium molybdate (Er:CaMoO4) thin films grown on silicon and yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) substrates, as a potential solid state system for C-band (utilizing the ∼1.5 μm Er 3+ 4f–4f transition) quantum emitters for quantum network applications. Through molecular beam epitaxial growth experiments and electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and reflection electron diffraction studies, we identify an incorporation limited deposition regime that enables a 1:1 Ca:Mo ratio in the growing film leading to single phase CaMoO 4 formation that can be in situ doped with Er (typically 2–100 ppm). We further show that growth on silicon substrates is single phase but polycrystalline in morphology, while growth on YSZ substrates leads to high-quality epitaxial single crystalline CaMoO 4 films. We perform preliminary optical and microwave characterization on the suspected Y 1 –Z 1 transition of 2 ppm, 200 nm epitaxial Er:CaMoO 4 annealed thin films and extract an optical inhomogeneous linewidth of 9.1(1) GHz, an optical excited state lifetime of 6.7(2) ms, a spectral diffusion-limited homogeneous linewidth of 6.7(4) MHz, and an EPR linewidth of 1.10(2) GHz.

Emergence of antiferromagnetic correlations and Kondolike features in a model for infinite layer nickelates

We report a determinant quantum Monte Carlo study of a two-band model, inspired by infinite-layer nickelates, focusing on the influence of interlayer hybridization between $3d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$ orbitals derived from Ni (or Ni and O) in one layer and rare-earth (R) 5d orbitals in the other layer, hereafter the Ni and R layers, respectively. For a filling with one electron shared between the two layers on average, interlayer hybridization leads to “self-doped" holes in the Ni layer and the absence of antiferromagnetic ordering, but rather the appearance of spin-density and charge-density stripe-like states. As the interlayer hybridization increases, both the Ni and R layers develop antiferromagnetic correlations, even though either layer individually remains away from half-filling. For hybridization within an intermediate range, roughly comparable to the intralayer nearest-neighbor hopping t Ni , the model develops signatures of Kondo-like physics.

Results from the DUNE ND-LAr 2x2 Demonstrator Run 2

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is a cutting-edge, long-baseline experiment under construction in the United States, based on large liquid-argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs). The DUNE Near Detector LArTPC (ND-LAr) will employ a novel modular architecture using a pixelated LArPix charge readout. To validate this design and characterize detector response, the 2×2 demonstrator—an array of eight optically isolated LArTPC modules—was deployed at Fermilab in 2024. During winter 2025, the 2x2 demonstrator was operated for a second data-taking campaign (Run 2) with the aim of studying the low-energy response of the detector. Run 2 focused on calibration and response studies using a suite of deployed radioactive sources. Gamma sources (²²Na, ⁶⁰Co, and ⁸⁸Y) were used to probe module-to-module performance variations, energy resolution, and calibrations. Neutron sources (AmBe and a pulsed neutron generator) enabled studies of neutron interactions in liquid argon, including inelastic scatters and neutron capture signals, relevant for low-energy backgrounds and detector modeling. In addition, the detector was doped with ²²⁰Rn, providing Bi–Po coincidence signals that allow precise calibration of the charge and scintillation response. This poster will present results from these calibration campaigns. These studies provide critical validation of the ND-LAr modular LArTPC concept and inform calibration and reconstruction strategies for the full DUNE near detector.

The NASA - Arc 10/20 micron camera

A new infrared camera (AIR Camera) has been developed at NASA - Ames Research Center for observations from ground-based telescopes. The heart of the camera is a Hughes 58 x 62 pixel Arsenic-doped Silicon detector array that has the spectral sensitivity range to allow observations in both the 10 and 20 micron atmospheric windows.

Second dome of superconductivity in YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 at high pressure

Evidence is growing that a second dome of high-T c superconductivity can be accessed in the cuprates by increasing the doping beyond the first dome. Here, in this study, we use ab initio methods without invoking any free parameters, such as the Hubbard U, to reveal that pressure could turn YBa 2 ⁢Cu 3 ⁢O 7 into an ideal candidate for second dome superconductivity, displaying the predicted signature of strongly hybridized d x 2 -y 2 and d z 2 orbitals. Notably, pressure is found to induce a phase transition replacing the antiferromagnetic phases with an orbitally degenerate d-d phase. Our study suggests that the origin of the second dome is correlated with the oxygen-hole fraction in the CuO 2 planes and the collapse of the pseudogap phase.

Preparation and characteristics of superconducting cuprate thin films: Nd(2-x)Ce(x)CuO4 and substituted Bi-system

Characteristics of the electron-doped-type Nd(2-x)Ce(x)CuO4 systems and substituted Bi2(Sr,Ln)3Cu2Oy system were systematically studied using the high quality thin-film samples. The Nd(2-x)Ce(x)CuO4 thin films with various Ce concentrations, x, were prepared by RF magnetron sputtering on SrTiO3 heated at around 500 C. After subsequent annealing at 1100 C in air, the films showed the c-axis orientation normal to the substrates. By means of the reducing treatment (annealing in a vacuum), superconductivity was induced for the films with 0.14 is less than or equal to x is less than or equal to 0.18. The superconductivity and transport properties of the films were strongly affected by the reducing treatment. The x = 0.15 film exhibited a sharp superconducting transition with zero resistivity at 22 K, in consistent with the diamagnetic properties. The resistivity of the films was fairly low with metallic characteristics, and the sight of the Hall coefficient was negative in the normal state. On the other hand, the normal-state optical measurements showed that the undoped Nd2CuO4 is a semiconductor with a charge transfer gap of 1.3 eV, and that, when Ce ions were doped, a plasma reflection due to the free-carriers came to be seen with the plasma frequency of 1.07 eV for 0.14 is less than or equal to x is less than or equal to 0.18. Moreover, x ray photoemission study revealed that the Cu valence of the film decreased for 2(+) for x = 0 to 1(+) for x = 0.15. These physical properties are in contrast with those of hole-doped-type cuprate superconductors. Bi2(Sr,Ln)3Cu2Oy thin films were also prepared on MgO substrates heated at 600 to 700 C by similar methods. It was found that the growth conditions for Bi-systems with two CuO2 planes were different for each composition and species of lanthanoid in the films. Moreover, preparation of Bi-system with three CuO2 planes was very difficult when lanthanoid atoms were doped in the system. Their electric transport properties and x ray photoemission spectroscopy were investigated. Carrier concentration and Cu valence were discussed with regard to the superconductivity.

High pressure synthesis and magnetic studies of quasi one dimensional systems Sr(n-1)Cu(n+1)O(2n) (n=3,5)

SrCu2O3 and Sr2Cu3O5 containing two-leg and three-leg S = 1/2 ladders made of antiferromagnetic Cu-O-Cu linear bonds, respectively, were synthesized at high pressure, and their crystallographic and magnetic properties were investigated. Both susceptibility and T(1) data of NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) revealed the existence of a large spin gap only for SrCu2O3. Superconductivity, which had been predicted theoretically for carrier-doped SrCu2O3 could not be realized although partial substitution of La(3+) for Sr(2+) seemed to be carried out successfully. Electron carriers injected seems to remain localized.

Persistent structural distortion for anticipated improper ferroelectricity in ultrathin h-Lu 1− x Ca x MnO 3 films

Improper ferroelectricity in hexagonal rare-earth manganites (h-RMnO 3 , R = Ho–Lu, Y, Sc) arises from a geometric distortion as the primary order parameter, resilient to depolarizing fields and promising for ultrathin ferroelectric devices. However, the substrate-induced interface clamping effect, which suppresses the geometric distortion in the sub-nanometer regime, has thus far hindered the realization of two-dimensional improper ferroelectrics. This study demonstrates that doping with calcium can enhance ferroelectric structural distortion in h-LuMnO 3 thin films. Compressively strained h-Lu 1−x Ca x MnO 3 (x = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5) epitaxial thin films were stabilized on sapphire substrates using an h-ScFeO 3 buffer layer. We have found that the interface clamping effect is entirely overcome when the doping concentration reaches x ⩾ 0.2, establishing a potential quasi-2D ferroelectric system with a remarkably high estimated structural transition temperature of larger than 1200 K inferred indirectly from temperature-resolved reflection high-energy electron diffraction. This finding suggests a general strain engineering strategy to enhance improper ferroelectricity in hexagonal manganites.
