Method of Fabricating X-Ray Absorbers for Low-Energy X-Ray Spectroscopy

A method of forming low-energy x-ray absorbers. Sensors may be formed on a semiconductor, e.g., silicon, wafer. A seed metal layer, e.g., gold, is deposited on the wafer and patterned into stem pads for electroplating. Stems, e.g., gold, are electroplated from the stem seed pads through a stem mask. An absorber layer, e.g., gold, is deposited on the wafer, preferably e-beam evaporated. After patterning the absorbers, absorber and stem mask material is removed, e.g., in a solvent bath and critical point drying.

A 3D-printed Broadband Millimeter Wave Absorber

We present the design, manufacturing technique, and characterization of a 3D-printed broadband graded index millimeter wave absorber. The absorber is additively manufactured using a fused filament fabrication (FFF) 3D printer out of a carbon-loaded high impact polystyrene (HIPS) filament and is designed using a space-filling curve to optimize manufacturability using said process. The absorber's reflectivity is measured from 63 GHz to 115 GHz and from 150 GHz to 215 GHz and is compared to electromagnetic simulations. The intended application is for terminating stray light in Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) telescopes, and the absorber has been shown to survive cryogenic thermal cycling.

Development of an Additively Manufactured Turbine Blade Tuned Mass Absorber

An innovative concept using a tuned mass absorber for resonant response reduction of turbine blades that is integrally fabricated into the blades using additive manufactured has been developed. Avoiding high resonant response and resulting high cycle fatigue failure is a major concern of the $100B worldwide turbine industry, which encompasses power generation, jet engines and rocket engine turbomachinery. Blade failure is potentially catastrophic, and although preventative measures using dampers do exist, these solutions are extremely expensive to develop and are not always effective. In addition, many of the existing techniques do not work for newer integrally bladed disks (or blisks), where there is no inherent damping in the assembly. The proposed concept, in which a tuned mass absorber re-arranges the structural dynamics and moves energy from the blade to the absorber, is designed specifically for blisks, and is intentionally linear, enabling accurate response prediction during design. Single blade prototypes have been analyzed, fabricated, and tested, and different absorber concepts have shown a reduction in response of up to 60%. After an extensive commercialization and prior art search, MSFC determined the innovation merited the generation and submission of a patent application in August ’21. Funding is now being sought to fabricate a 20-bladed blisk which would be spun at operational speeds with substantially higher and more realistic pressure loads in a special spin facility. Successful completion of this program would raise the TRL from 3/4 to 6/7, significantly improving the viability for adoption of the concept not only in rocket engines but other industrial applications as well.

Impacts of Snow Darkening Effects by Light Absorbing Aerosols on Hydroclimate of Eurasia During Boreal Spring and Summer

In this study, we used the NASA GEOS-5 climate model to investigate the impact of snow darkening by light-absorbing aerosols on the hydro-climate if Eurasia during boreal spring and summer. Two sets of 10-member ensemble model integrations with prescribed sea surface temperature were carried out for 10 simulated years (2002-2011); one includes snow-darkening effects (SDE) by light-absorbing aerosols, and one does not (NSDE). Differences between the two experiments in the hydro-climates over Eurasia were evaluated. Results show that SDE warming is most pronounced during the melting season due to strong snow-albedo feedback in the vicinity of the retreating seasonal snowline. SDE spurs a Wet-First-Dry-Later (WFDL) modulation of the surface energy and water balances, characterized by an accelerated (days-to-weeks) snowmelt along with excessive runoff and a warming and wetting of the land during the early part of the melting season. The fast snowmelt is followed by a prolonged (> months) warming and desiccation of the land, stemming from a deficit of late-season snowmelt water and increased surface evaporation. The prolonged warming and drying of the land atmosphere system persist through the summer, sustained by atmospheric conditions favorable for the development of atmospheric blocking, i.e., higher mid-to-upper tropospheric geopotential height, lower relative humidity, reduced cloudiness and enhanced atmospheric subsidence. Overall, SDE by light absorbing aerosols leads to a warmer and drier boreal summer hydro-climate, increasing the frequency of the top 5% and 1% extreme hot days (as defined by NSDE statistics) over western and northern Eurasia by approximately three-fold and tenfold, respectively.

Black-silicon as a Wideband Infrared Absorber for the Space Instruments: Fabrication, Modeling, and Characterization

The uniform black silicon (BSI) cryogenically etched has been demonstrated as a superior absorber in par with other ultra-absorbers such as carbon nano tubes in the visible and near-infrared spectrum. In this work, we discuss the fabrication, modeling, and characterization of the BSI aiming at the 2.5-5 microns range. We investigated a series of cryogenic parameters such as temperature, pressure, oxygen flowrate, power, and etching duration and fabricated a series of uniformly etched wafers. Additionally, we established at hree-dimensional mathematical model of a unit cell and manipulated the silicon needle geometry and shape. Our preliminary fabrication results show silicon needles of 8 micron height have five orders of magnitude specular reflectance in the infrared region. The modeling efforts how longer pillar heights could be better absorbers as the wavelength increases.

Polarization as a Discriminator of Light-Absorbing Impurities in or Above Snow

This conceptual study presents advanced radiative transfer computations of light polarization originating from a snowpack consisting of nonspherical grains and variable content of light-absorbing impurities, either embedded in the snowpack or (with the same optical properties) lofted above it in the form of atmospheric aerosols. The results highlight the importance of considering shapes other than spherical for the snow grains, which otherwise can lead to non-negligible errors in the retrieval of snow albedo from remote sensing observations. More importantly, it is found that polarimetric measurements provide a means to partition light-absorbing impurities embedded in the snowpack from absorbing aerosols aloft, a task traditionally prohibitive for sensors capable exclusively of measurements of total reflectance. Heritage techniques to obtain snow grain size from shortwave infrared observations of total reflectance are well established, as are those that leverage polarimetric, multiangular observations across the entire optical spectrum to characterize the optical and microphysical properties of atmospheric aerosols. The polarization signatures of near-infrared (e.g., 864 nm) observations carry critical information on snow grain shape. The prospected launch of space-borne polarimeters with proven accuracy, therefore, advocates for the development of data inversion schemes, to boost the accuracy of simultaneous retrievals of atmospheric and surface parameters in the polar and snow-covered regions, critical to climate studies.

Bellows joint absorbs torsional deflections in duct system

Long, thin-walled bellows compressed into a short length absorbs the same amount of torsional deflection as the same tube in full length condition and saves in cost, complexity and space. This bellows has lower torsional spring rate to absorb the bulk of the duct assembly tortional deflections, leaving the other bellows free to absorb axial and angular deflections.

Electron beam standby absorber system

Electron beam energy is absorbed by deflectors which allow beam distribution over an absorber located between the deflectors and workpiece. The undeflected beam passes through a hole in the absorber when the deflection is de-energized, when energized, the beam is kept to a minimum power level by deflection rate change.

Lipid-absorbing Polymers

The removal of bile acids and cholesterol by polymeric absorption is discussed in terms of micelle-polymer interaction. The results obtained with a polymer composed of 75 parts PEO and 25 parts PB plus curing ingredients show an absorption of 305 to 309%, based on original polymer weight. Particle size effects on absorption rate are analyzed. It is concluded that crosslinked polyethylene oxide polymers will absorb water, crosslinked polybutadiene polymers will absorb lipids; neither polymer will absorb appreciable amounts of lipids from micellar solutions of lipids in water.

Metal shearing energy absorber

A metal shearing energy absorber is described. The absorber is composed of a flat thin strip of metal which is pulled through a slot in a cutter member of a metal, harder than the metal of the strip. The slot's length, in the direction perpendicular to the pull direction, is less than the strip's width so that as the strip is pulled through the slot, its edges are sheared off, thereby absorbing some of the pulling energy. In one embodiment the cutter member is a flat plate of steel, while in another embodiment the cutter member is U-shaped with the slot at its base.

Optimization of the acoustic absorption coefficients of certain functional absorbents

The sound absorption coefficients of some functional absorbents (mineral wool plates) are determined by the reverberation chamber method. The influence of the angle of inclination of the sound absorbing material with respect to the surface to be treated is analyzed as well as the influence of the covering index, defined as the ratio of the designed area of a plate and the area of the treated surface belonging to another plate. As compared with the conventional method of applying sound-absorbing plates, the analyzed structures have a higher technological and economical efficiency. The optimum structure corresponds to an angle of inclination of 15 deg and a covering index of 0.8.

Translatory shock absorber for attitude sensors

A translatory shock absorber is provided for mounting an attitude sensor thereon for isolating a sensor from translatory vibrations. The translatory shock absorber includes a hollow block structure formed as one piece to form a parallelogram. The absorber block structure includes a movable top plate for supporting the attitude sensor and a fixed base plate with opposed side plates interposed between. At the junctions of the side plates, and the base and top plates, there are provided grooves which act as flexible hinges for attenuating translatory vibrations. A damping material is supported on a pedestal which is carried on the base plate between the side plates thereof. The top of the damping material rests against the bottom surface of the top plate for eliminating the resonant peaks of vibration.

Development of a prototype regeneration carbon dioxide absorber

A prototype regenerable carbon dioxide absorber was developed to maintain the environmental quality of the portable life support system. The absorber works on the alkali metal carbonate-bicarbonate solid-gas reaction to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The prototype sorber module was designed, fabricated, and tested at simulated extravehicular activity conditions to arrive at optimum design. The unit maintains sorber outlet concentration below 5 mm Hg. An optimization study was made with respect to heat transfer, temperature control, sorbent utilization, sorber life and regenerability, and final size of the module. Important parameters influencing the capacity of the final absorber unit were identified and recommendations for improvement were made.
