Primary battery design and safety guidelines handbook

This handbook provides engineers and safety personnel with guidelines for the safe design or selection and use of primary batteries in spaceflight programs. Types of primary batteries described are silver oxide zinc alkaline, carbon-zinc, zinc-air alkaline, manganese dioxide-zionc alkaline, mercuric oxide-zinc alkaline, and lithium anode cells. Along with typical applications, the discussions of the individual battery types include electrochemistry, construction, capacities and configurations, and appropriate safety measures. A chapter on general battery safety covers hazard sources and controls applicable to all battery types. Guidelines are given for qualification and acceptance testing that should precede space applications. Permissible failure levels for NASA applications are discussed.

Cryogenic Mixed Mode I – Mode II Fracture Toughness of Various Polymer Composite Materials

The present study investigates the mixed mode interlaminar fracture toughness of six polymer matrix composite materials at both room temperature and cryogenic liquid nitrogen temperature. The single leg bending test employed gives a mix of Mode I (opening) and Mode II (in-plane shearing) cracking. The tested thermoplastic-matrix composites were shown to have total mixed mode toughnesses 3.1–4.3 times higher than those of representative thermoset resin composites.

Manufacturing and Scale-Up of Natural Fiber Composite eVTOL Propeller Skin and C-Channel

This presentation discusses the manufacturing and scale-up of natural fiber composites for aerospace applications, conducted within NASA’s Convergent Aeronautics Solutions portfolio to advance aircraft capabilities and efficiency. The effort focused on the development and demonstration of two proof-of concept articles, an electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) propeller skin and a C-channel subcomponent. Best practices and guidance on addressing key challenges with bio-based composite materials and manufacturing are provided.

Composites
