Effects of thin metal contacts on few-layer van der Waals ferrielectric CuInP 2 S 6

Out-of-plane polarized ferroelectric materials in a capacitive structure provide a key component for several technological applications. Furthermore, two-dimensional materials are expected to aid in the quest for both ultrathin and flexible electronics. Of the various two-dimensional ferroelectrics with out-of-plane polarization, CuInP 2 S 6 is special in that the Cu atoms are highly mobile and it has been shown to possess both low- and high-polarization states. Here, using density-functional-theory calculations, we explore the stabilization of the ferroelectric state for several prototypical metal contacts (Gr, Ni, Cu, Au, and Ag). In all cases, we find that the ferroelectric state can be stabilized at fewer layers than in the freestanding case. For all of the considered conventional metal contacts, we also find the existence of a quasi-ferroelectric state that stabilizes a polar phase for thicknesses greater than two layers of CIPS. In the cases of Au and Ag, interfacial alignment and strain can be used to stabilize ferroelectricity at the bilayer limit. Furthermore, we find that the strength of the interaction between the contact and CuInP 2 S 6 also leads to stabilization of the high-polarization state when ferroelectricity is stabilized. Lastly, energy-barrier calculations show that the system is still switchable in the presence of contact doping from the metal contacts.

Ferro-ionic states and domains morphology in Hf x Zr 1–x O 2 nanoparticles

Unique polar properties of nanoscale hafnia-zirconia oxides (Hf x Zr 1–x O 2 ) are of great interest for condensed matter physics, nanophysics, and advanced applications. These properties are connected (at least partially) to the ionic–electronic and electrochemical phenomena at the surface, interfaces, and/or internal grain boundaries. Here, we calculated the phase diagrams, dielectric permittivity, spontaneous polar, and antipolar ordering, as well as the domain structure morphology in Hf x Zr 1–x O 2 nanoparticles covered by ionic–electronic charge originating from surface electrochemical adsorption. We revealed that the ferro-ionic coupling supports the polar long-range order in nanoscale Hf x Zr 1–x O 2 , induces, and/or enlarges the stability region of the labyrinthine domains toward smaller sizes and smaller environmental dielectric constant at low concentrations of the surface ions. The ferro-ionic coupling causes the transition to the single-domain ferro-ionic state at high concentrations of the surface ions. We predict that the labyrinthine domain states, being multiple-degenerated, may significantly affect the emergence of the negative differential capacitance state in the nanograined/nanocrystalline Hf x Zr 1–x O 2 films.

Antiferromagnetic character of the quantum phase transition in the Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice

In this work we provide a unified, comprehensive treatment of all operators that contribute to the antiferromagnetic, ferromagnetic, and charge-density-wave structure factors and order parameters of the hexagonal Hubbard Model. We use the Hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm to perform a systematic, carefully controlled analysis in the temporal Trotter error and of the thermodynamic limit. We expect our findings to improve the consistency of Monte Carlo determinations of critical exponents. We perform a data collapse analysis and determine the critical exponent β = 0.898 (37) for the semimetal-Mott insulator transition in the hexagonal Hubbard Model. Our methods are applicable to a wide range of lattice theories of strongly correlated electrons.

A -type antiferromagnetic order in the Zintl-phase insulator EuZn 2 P 2

Zintl phases, containing strongly covalently bonded frameworks with separate ionically bonded ions, have emerged as a critical materials family in which to couple magnetism and strong spin-orbit coupling to drive diverse topological phases of matter. Here we report the single-crystal synthesis, magnetic, thermodynamic, transport, and theoretical properties of the Zintl compound EuZn 2 P 2 that crystallizes in the anti-La 2 O 3 (CaAl 2 Si 2 ) P-3m1 structure, containing triangular layers of Eu 2+ ions. In-plane resistivity measurements reveal insulating behavior with an estimated activation energy of E g = 0.11eV. Specific heat and magnetization measurements indicate antiferromagnetic ordering at T N = 23K. Curie-Weiss analysis of in-plane and out of plane magnetic susceptibility from T = 150 to 300 K yields p eff = 8.61 for μ 0 H⊥c and p eff = 7.74 for μ 0 H//c, close to the expected values for the 4f 7 J = S = 7/2 Eu 2+ ion and indicative of weak anisotropy. Below T N , a significant anisotropy of χ ⊥ /χ // ≈ 2.3 develops, consistent with A-type magnetic order as observed in isostructural analogs and as predicted by the density functional theory calculations reported herein. The positive Weiss temperatures of θ W =19.2K for μ 0 H⊥c and θ W =41.9K for μ 0 H//c show a similar anisotropy and suggest competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. Comparing Eu magnetic ordering temperatures across trigonal EuM 2 X 2 (M= divalent metal, X= pnictide) shows that EuZn 2 P 2 exhibits the highest ordering temperature, with variations in T N correlating with changes in expected dipolar interaction strengths within and between layers and independent of the magnitude of electrical conductivity. These results provide experimental validation of the crystochemical intuition that the cation Eu 2+ layers and the anionic (M 2 X 2 ) 2– framework can be treated as electronically distinct subunits, enabling further predictive materials design.

Band Structure and Charge Ordering of Dirac Semimetal EuAl 4 at Low Temperatures

In this article, EuAl 4 is proposed to host a topological Hall state. This material also undergoes four consecutive antiferromagnetic (AFM) transitions upon cooling below T N1 = 15.4 K in the presence of charge density wave (CDW) order that sets in below T CDW = 140 K. We use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density-functional-theory calculations to study how magnetic ordering affects the electronic properties in EuAl 4 . Here, we found changes in the band structure upon each of the four consecutive AFM transitions including band splitting, renormalizations, and appearance of new bands forming additional Fermi sheets. In addition we also found significant enhancement of the quasiparticles’ lifetime due to suppression of spin flip scattering, similar to what was previously reported for ferromagnetic EuCd 2 As 2 . Surprisingly, we observe that most significant changes in electronic properties occur not at T N1 , but instead at the AFM3 to AFM4 transition, which coincides with the largest drop in resistivity.

Superconducting dome and structural changes in LaRu 3 ⁢Si 2 under pressure

LaRu 3 ⁢Si 2 is of current research interest as a kagome metal with a superconducting transition temperature, 𝑇 𝑐 ∼7 K, and higher-temperature charge density wave orders. Here we report on electrical transport and x-ray diffraction measurements on LaRu 3 ⁢Si 2 under pressure up to 65 GPa and 35 GPa, respectively. The superconducting transition temperature 𝑇 𝑐 first gets slightly enhanced and reaches a maximum ∼8.7 K at ∼8.5 GPa. With further applied pressure, 𝑇 𝑐 is initially gradually suppressed, then more rapidly suppressed, followed by gradual suppression, revealing a superconducting dome. Two possible pressure-induced structural phase transitions are also observed at room temperature, from the original hexagonal phase to another hexagonal structure above ∼11.5 GPa, and further to a structure with lower symmetry above ∼23.5 GPa. These transition pressures roughly correlate with features found in our pressure-dependent transport data.

Anharmonic Eigenvectors and Acoustic Phonon Disappearance in Quantum Paraelectric SrTiO 3

Pronounced anomalies in the SrTiO 3 dynamical structure factor, S(Q,E), including the disappearance of acoustic phonon branches at low temperatures, were uncovered with inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and simulations. The striking effect reflects anharmonic couplings between acoustic and optic phonons and the incipient ferroelectric instability near the quantum critical point. It is rationalized using a first-principles renormalized anharmonic phonon approach, pointing to nonlinear Ti-O hybridization causing unusual changes in real-space phonon eigenvectors, frequencies, group velocities, and scattering phase space. Lastly, our method is general and establishes how T dependences beyond the harmonic regime, assessed by INS mapping of large reciprocal-space volumes, provide real-space insights into anharmonic atomic dynamics near phase transitions.

Antiferro- and metamagnetism in the S = 7 / 2 hollandite analog Eu Ga 2 Sb 2

Recent work analyzing the impact of nonsymmorphic symmetries on electronic states has given rise to the discovery of multiple types of topological matter. Here we report the single-crystal synthesis and magnetic properties of Eu Ga 2 Sb 2 , a Eu-based antiferromagnet structurally consisting of pseudo-1D chains of Eu ions related by a nonsymmorphic glide plane. Here we find the onset of antiferromagnetic order at T N = 8K. Above T N the magnetic susceptibility is isotropic. Curie-Weiss analysis suggests competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions, with p eff = 8.1 μ B as expected for 4f 7 J = S = 7/2 Eu 2+ ions. Below T N and at low applied magnetic fields, an anisotropy develops linearly, reaching χ ⊥ /χ ∥ = 6 at T = 2K. There is concomitant metamagnetic behavior along χ ∥ , with a magnetic field of μ 0 H ≈ 0.5 T sufficient to suppress the anisotropy. Independent of crystal orientation, there is a continuous evolution to a field-polarized paramagnetic state with M = 7μ B /Eu 2+ at μ 0 H = 2 T as T → 0 K. Specific-heat measurements show a recovered magnetic entropy of ΔS mag ≈ 16.4 Jmol –1 K –1 from T ~ 0 K to T = T N , close to the expected value of R ln(8) for an S = 7/2 ion, indicating negligible low-dimensional spin fluctuations above T N . We find no evidence of unusual behaviors arising either from the dimensionality or the presence of the nonsymmorphic symmetries.
