Sex- and age-specific aspects of human peripheral T-cell dynamics

Background: The diversity of the antigenic T cell receptor (TCR) repertoire clonally expressed on T lymphocytes is a key element of the adaptive immune system protective functions. A decline in diversity in the older adults is associated with health deterioration. This diversity is generated by the rearrangement of TRB genes coding for TCR chains during lymphocyte differentiation in the thymus, but is essentially maintained by peripheral T lymphocytes proliferation for most of life. Deep sequencing of rearranged TRB genes from blood cells allows the monitoring of peripheral T cell repertoire dynamics. We analysed two aspects of rearranged TRB diversity, related to T lymphocyte proliferation and to the distribution of the T cell clone size, in a collection of repertoires obtained from 1 to 74 years-old donors. Results: Our results show that peripheral T lymphocytes expansion differs according to the recombination status of their TRB loci. Their proliferation rate changes with age, with different patterns in men and women. T cell clone size becomes more heterogeneous with time, and, in adults, is always more even in women. Importantly, a longitudinal analysis of TRB repertoires obtained at ten years intervals from individual men and women confirms the findings of this cross-sectional study. Conclusions: Peripheral T lymphocyte proliferation partially depends on their thymic developmental history. The rate of proliferation of T cells differing in their TRB rearrangement status is different in men and women before the age of 18 years old, but similar thereafter.

Structural Aspects of Neutron Survival Probabilities

The neutron survival probability (and related quantities including probabilities of extinction and initiation) is a central element of the broader stochastic theory of neutron populations and finds application in fields including reactor start-up, analysis of reactor power bursts and criticality accidents, and safeguards. In a full neutron transport formulation, the equation governing the single-neutron survival probability is a backward or adjoint-like integro-partial differential equation with the added complexity of being highly nonlinear. Analogous formulations of this equation exist in the context of many approximate theories of neutron transport, with the point kinetics formulation having received significant theoretical attention since the 1940s. This work continues this tradition by providing a novel analysis of the single-neutron survival probability equation using the tools of boundary layer theory. The analysis reveals that the “fully dynamic” solution of the single-neutron survival probability equation—and some key probability distributions derived from it—may be cast as a singular perturbation around the underlying quasi-static single-neutron probability of initiation. In this perturbation solution, the expansion parameter is the ratio of the neutron generation time to a macroscopic time scale characterizing the overall system evolution; this interpretation illuminates some of the fundamental structural aspects of neutron survival phenomena.

Aspects of Spodumene Lithium Extraction Techniques

Lithium (Li), a leading cathode material in rechargeable Li-ion batteries, is vital to modern energy storage technology, establishing it as one of the most impactful and strategical elements. Given the surge in the electric car market, it is crucial to improve lithium recovery from its rich mineral deposits using the most effective extraction technique. In recent years, both industry and academia have shown significant interest in Li recovery from various Li-bearing minerals. Of these, only extraction from spodumene has established a reliable industrial production of Li salts. The current approaches for cracking of the naturally occurring, stable α-spodumene structure into a more open structure—β-spodumene—involve the so-called decrepitation process that takes place at extreme temperatures of ~1100 °C. This conversion is necessary, as β-spodumene is more susceptible to chemical attacks facilitating Li extraction. In the last several decades, many techniques have been demonstrated and patented to process hard-rock mineral spodumene. The objective of this review is to present a thorough analysis of significant findings and the enhancement of process flowsheets over time that can be useful for both research endeavors and industrial process improvements. The review focuses on the following techniques: acid methods, alkali methods, carbonate roasting/autoclaving methods, sulfuric acid roasting/autoclaving methods, chlorinating methods, and mechanochemical activation. Recently, microwaves (MWs), as an energy source, have been employed to transform α-spodumene into β-spodumene. Considering its energy-efficient and short-duration aspects, the review discusses the interaction mechanism of MWs with solids, MW-assisted decrepitation, and Li extraction efficiencies. Finally, the merits and/or disadvantages, challenges, and prospects of the processes are summarized.

Selecting the independent coordinates of manifolds with large aspect ratios

Many manifold embedding algorithms fail apparently when the data manifold has a large aspect ratio (such as a long, thin strip). Here, we formulate success and failure in terms of finding a smooth embedding, showing also that the problem is pervasive and more complex than previously recognized. Mathematically, success is possible under very broad conditions, provided that embedding is done by carefully selected eigenfunctions of the Laplace-Beltrami operator Δ. Hence, we propose a bicriterial Independent Eigencoordinate Selection (IES) algorithm that selects smooth embeddings with few eigenvectors. The algorithm is grounded in theory, has low computational overhead, and is successful on synthetic and large real data.

Arrays of high-aspect-ratio germanium nanostructures with nanoscale pitch and methods for the fabrication thereof

Methods for fabricating thin, high-aspect-ratio Ge nanostructures from high-quality, single-crystalline Ge substrates are provided. Also provided are grating structures made using the methods. The methods utilize a thin layer of graphene between a surface of a Ge substrate, and an overlying resist layer. The graphene passivates the surface, preventing the formation of water-soluble native Ge oxides that can result in the lift-off of the resist during the development of the resist.

HEAT TRANSFER ASPECTS OF TWO PISTON SPLAT QUENCHING

This thesis investigates the heat transfer aspects of the two-piston splat quench system by modifying surface roughness and by using copper and stainless steel platens. In additive manufacturing, specifically selective laser melting (SLM), metal is subjected to a very rapid heating and cooling that produces cooling rates in the range from 105-106 °C/s. This rapid solidification produces microstructures that deviate far from equilibrium. Splat quenching is an experimental method that produces rapidly solidified structures under cooling rates that are comparable to those found in additive manufacturing. The splat quenching approach allows for more efficient testing of the rapid solidification behavior of a wide variety of alloys. In this thesis, two platen characteristics, surface roughness and material thermal conductivity, were examined to determine their role in controlling the heat transfer and the subsequent cooling rate during splat quenching of austenitic stainless steel 316L. To that objective, 5 surface finishes were produced using metallographic techniques, from 7046-203 Å Rms. Copper and 316L stainless steel platen material were used to reach different levels of thermal conductance. The combination of these 2 variables created 10 scenarios, which were examined using, backscatter imaging, secondary imaging, and electron back scatter diffraction. Cooling rates were estimated using cell sizing obtained through electrolytic etching and secondary imaging. This thesis determined that both surface modification and changes in material type had a statistically significant impact on the cell sizes observed. Where material type far outweighed surface roughness in its effect on cell size.

High aspect ratio gratings fabricated by electrodeposition

A method is provided for making gratings of gold or other metal in silicon substrates. The disclosed method may achieve high aspect ratios. According to the disclosed method, a silicon wafer is through-etched. A seed layer of metal is vapor-deposited on one side of the wafer, and a layer of metal is electrodeposited on the seed layer. The electrodeposited metal plugs the trenches and provides a conductive surface for subsequent electrodeposition. The trenches are then filled by electrodeposition from within the trenches, so that the walls of the metal grating grow on the metal plugs.

A novel hardmask-to-substrate pattern transfer method for creating 3D, multi-level, hierarchical, high aspect-ratio structures for applications in microfluidics and cooling technologies

Abstract This letter solves a major hurdle that mars photolithography-based fabrication of micro-mesoscale structures in silicon. Conventional photolithography is usually performed on smooth, flat wafer surfaces to lay a 2D design and subsequently etch it to create single-level features. It is, however, unable to process non-flat surfaces or already etched wafers and create more than one level in the structure. In this study, we have described a novel cleanroom-based process flow that allows for easy creation of such multi-level, hierarchical 3D structures in a substrate. This is achieved by introducing an ultra-thin sacrificial silicon dioxide hardmask layer on the substrate which is first 3D patterned via multiple rounds of lithography. This 3D pattern is then scaled vertically by a factor of 200–300 and transferred to the substrate underneath via a single shot deep etching step. The proposed method is also easily characterizable—using features of different topographies and dimensions, the etch rates and selectivities were quantified; this characterization information was later used while fabricating specific target structures. Furthermore, this study comprehensively compares the novel pattern transfer technique to already existing methods of creating multi-level structures, like grayscale lithography and chip stacking. The proposed process was found to be cheaper, faster, and easier to standardize compared to other methods—this made the overall process more reliable and repeatable. We hope it will encourage more research into hybrid structures that hold the key to dramatic performance improvements in several micro-mesoscale devices.

Molecular Layer Deposited Aluminum‐Based Hybrid Resist for High‐Resolution Nanolithography and Direct Ultra‐High Aspect Ratio Pattern Transfer

Inorganic-containing hybrid photoresists are critical for next-generation extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography and angstrom-era semiconductor miniaturization. However, associated conventional solution processing struggles to achieve ultrathin, uniform films with high conformality and compositional control, limiting overall patterning performance. Here, this study reports the systematic lithographic patterning characterization of an Al-based hybrid resist synthesized via vapor-phase molecular layer deposition (MLD), using the trimethylaluminum (TMA) metal precursor and the hydroquinone (HQ) aromatic organic linker. The resist supports both sub-20 nm high-resolution nanolithography and virtually infinite silicon plasma etch selectivity. Lithographic performance studied using electron beam lithography (EBL) as a proxy for EUV shows that, under an optimized process adopting post-exposure bake, the resist achieves the best resolution of 15.4 nm linewidth under stringent 1:1 line-space high-density patterning—limited only by the minimum beam size of the EBL system. The resist also shows wide dose latitude and balanced performance in resolution, roughness, and sensitivity. The infinite silicon etch selectivity, stemming from spontaneous aluminum oxyfluoride passivation layer formation, enables fabrication of micrometer-tall, 40 nm-wide silicon nanofin structures using only a ≈30 nm-thick resist layer, without no hard mask. These results highlight the potential of MLD-based hybrid resists for developing next-generation resist materials for micro/nanoelectronics manufacturing.

Interface Aspects in All‐Solid‐State Li‐Based Batteries Reviewed

Abstract Extensive efforts have been made to improve the Li‐ionic conductivity of solid electrolytes (SE) for developing promising all‐solid‐state Li‐based batteries (ASSB). Recent studies suggest that minimizing the existing interface problems is even more important than maximizing the conductivity of SE. Interfaces are essential in ASSB, and their properties significantly influence the battery performance. Interface problems, arising from both physical and (electro)chemical material properties, can significantly inhibit the transport of electrons and Li‐ions in ASSB. Consequently, interface problems may result in interlayer formation, high impedances, immobilization of moveable Li‐ions, loss of active host sites available to accommodate Li‐ions, and Li‐dendrite formation, all causing significant storage capacity losses and ultimately battery failures. The characteristic differences of interfaces between liquid‐ and solid‐type Li‐based batteries are presented here. Interface types, interlayer origin, physical and chemical structures, properties, time evolution, complex interrelations between various factors, and promising interfacial tailoring approaches are reviewed. Furthermore, recent advances in the interface‐sensitive or depth‐resolved analytical tools that can provide mechanistic insights into the interlayer formation and strategies to tailor the interlayer formation, composition, and properties are discussed.
