Bounded state space

This investigation is divided functionally into three different areas: (1) study of bounded state space, (2) nonlinear smoothing theory, and (3) system identification. (1) Study of bounded state space: necessary and sufficient conditions for an optimal control are obtained for a bounded state space optimal control problem. The difficulty of determining the so-called jump conditions is eliminated; however, the problem of determining the points where the response either enters or leaves the boundary still remains unsolved. (2) Nonlinear smoothing theory: nonlinear fixed-interval, fixed-point and fixed-lag smoothing of a random signal generated by a stochastic differential equation are investigated. Results on the asymptotic stability of a linear constant-parameter fixed-interval smoothing filter are obtained. (3) System identification: a particular stochastic modelling problem is solved. An Ito stochastic integral equation is used to mathematically model a black box having multiple inputs and multiple outputs. A new method for identifying system parameters is presented.

Digital adaptive model following flight control

Simple mechanical linkages are often unable to cope with the many control problems associated with high performance aircraft maneuvering over a wide flight envelope. One procedure for retaining uniform handling qualities over such an envelope is to implement a digital adaptive controller. Towards such an implementation an explicit adaptive controller, which makes direct use of online parameter identification, has been developed and applied to the linearized equations of motion for a typical fighter aircraft. The system is composed of an online weighted least squares identifier, a Kalman state filter, and a single stage real model following control law. The corresponding control gains are readily adjustable in accordance with parameter changes to ensure asymptotic stability if the conditions for perfect model following are satisfied and stability in the sense of boundedness otherwise.

Uncertain dynamical systems: A differential game approach

A class of dynamical systems in a conflict situation is formulated and discussed, and the formulation is applied to the study of an important class of systems in the presence of uncertainty. The uncertainty is deterministic and the only assumption is that its value belongs to a known compact set. Asymptotic stability is fully discussed with application to variable structure and model reference control systems.

Comparison of continuous and discrete adaptive identification algorithms

Discretization of a popular continuous-time control algorithm is effected and an equivalent discrete-time identification law developed and compared to a published discrete identification algorithm developed from Lyapunov Theory. Results are compared as regards asymptotic stability as insured using Lyapunov theory. Some analysis and design guidelines are proposed as regards implementation and practical utility.

Control systems design for large flexible space structures

Several approaches for the design of reduced-order linear-quadratic-Gaussian type controllers for large space structures were proposed and evaluated using a continuous model of a long free-free beam. Sufficient conditions were derived for the asymptotic stability with this type of controller. A finite-element model of a free-free-free-free square plate was obtained for use in control systems studies. A method was developed for optimal damping enhancement in large space structures.

Model reference adaptive control for linear time varying and nonlinear systems

Model reference adaptive control is applied to linear time varying systems and to nonlinear systems amenable to virtual linearization. Asymptotic stability is guaranteed even if the perfect model following conditions do not hold, provided that some sufficient conditions are satisfied. Simulations show the scheme to be capable of effectively controlling certain nonlinear systems.

Model reference adaptive control for systems with time varying model commands

Model reference adaptive control is applied to linear time invariant systems for the case of arbitrary time varying model commands. Asymptotic stability is guaranteed, provided that the output stabilized transfer matrix is strictly positive real. Only output measurements are needed. Neither perfect model following nor explicit parameter identification is required. Simulations show the scheme to be capable of guaranteeing stability when the model inputs are time varying.

On the design of robust LQ regulators

Sufficient conditions are obtained for global asymptotic stability of linear systems controlled by linear quadratic (LQ) regulators when nonlinearities or unmodeled linear dynamics are present in the loop. The conditions are less conservative than the standard LQ robustness results because they generally yield phase margins greater than 60 deg, and tolerance to nonlinearities having gains greater than 1/2. The conditions also provide a measure of robustness of a given LQ design to unmodeled dynamics and nonlinearities. For open-loop stable plants, it is proved that a class of LQ regulators can always be designed to have plus or minus 90 deg phase margin and tolerance to nonlinearities in the (0, infinity) sector.

Robust state estimation with imperfect sensors

Robustness properties of extended Kalman-type filters are investigated for time-varying plants when nonlinearities or linear dynamics are present at the plant input and output. Sufficient conditions for the asymptotic stability (of the state estimation error) in the absence of noise are obtained when the nonlinearities or the linear dynamics are perfectly known. When the nonlinearities are known only within bands of uncertainty, the estimation error is shown to be ultimately bounded under certain conditions. The results obtained highlight the robustness properties of such filters, which are similar to, but not exact duals of those of linear quadratic regulators.

Effects of anomalous transport on the potentials of discrete auroral arcs

The evolution of U-shaped double layers in discrete auroral arcs occurs much faster than the global current in the arc flux tube can be redistributed. For asymptotic stability of the arc on MHD time scales, this implies that local transport mechanisms are required to charge the nearly field-aligned flanks of the equipotential structure over an extended region along the magnetic field. The diversion of the uniform upstream current provides a constraint which limits the double-layer potential.

Simplified solution for a class of fading memory filters

A fading memory filter is a least squares estimator (LSE) that applies an exponentially decaying weight to past measurements. When compared with a standard Kalman filter, its key advantages are asymptotic stability and reduced sensitivity to modeling errors. This paper derives a simple solution for a class of fading memory filters, resulting in a reduction in computational complexity. Steady state filter solutions are obtained for second- and third-order filters used in a global positioning system (GPS) receiver for high dynamic vehicles.

Observability of discretized partial differential equations

It is shown that complete observability of the discrete model used to assimilate data from a linear partial differential equation (PDE) system is necessary and sufficient for asymptotic stability of the data assimilation process. The observability theory for discrete systems is reviewed and applied to obtain simple observability tests for discretized constant-coefficient PDEs. Examples are used to show how numerical dispersion can result in discrete dynamics with multiple eigenvalues, thereby detracting from observability.

Adaptive Strategies for Controls of Flexible Arms

An adaptive controller for a modern manipulator has been designed based on asymptotical stability via the Lyapunov criterion with the output error between the system and a reference model used as the actuating control signal. Computer simulations were carried out to test the design. The combination of the adaptive controller and a system vibration and mode shape estimator show that the flexible arm should move along a pre-defined trajectory with high-speed motion and fast vibration setting time. An existing computer-controlled prototype two link manipulator, RALF (Robotic Arm, Large Flexible), with a parallel mechanism driven by hydraulic actuators was used to verify the mathematical analysis. The experimental results illustrate that assumed modes found from finite element techniques can be used to derive the equations of motion with acceptable accuracy. The robust adaptive (modal) control is implemented to compensate for unmodelled modes and nonlinearities and is compared with the joint feedback control in additional experiments. Preliminary results show promise for the experimental control algorithm.

Optimal control of singularly perturbed nonlinear systems with state-variable inequality constraints

The established necessary conditions for optimality in nonlinear control problems that involve state-variable inequality constraints are applied to a class of singularly perturbed systems. The distinguishing feature of this class of two-time-scale systems is a transformation of the state-variable inequality constraint, present in the full order problem, to a constraint involving states and controls in the reduced problem. It is shown that, when a state constraint is active in the reduced problem, the boundary layer problem can be of finite time in the stretched time variable. Thus, the usual requirement for asymptotic stability of the boundary layer system is not applicable, and cannot be used to construct approximate boundary layer solutions. Several alternative solution methods are explored and illustrated with simple examples.

A family of asymptotically stable control laws for flexible robots based on a passivity approach

A general family of asymptotically stabilizing control laws is introduced for a class of nonlinear Hamiltonian systems. The inherent passivity property of this class of systems and the Passivity Theorem are used to show the closed-loop input/output stability which is then related to the internal state space stability through the stabilizability and detectability condition. Applications of these results include fully actuated robots, flexible joint robots, and robots with link flexibility.

An integrated collision prediction and avoidance scheme for mobile robots in non-stationary environments

A formulation that makes possible the integration of collision prediction and avoidance stages for mobile robots moving in general terrains containing moving obstacles is presented. A dynamic model of the mobile robot and the dynamic constraints are derived. Collision avoidance is guaranteed if the distance between the robot and a moving obstacle is nonzero. A nominal trajectory is assumed to be known from off-line planning. The main idea is to change the velocity along the nominal trajectory so that collisions are avoided. A feedback control is developed and local asymptotic stability is proved if the velocity of the moving obstacle is bounded. Furthermore, a solution to the problem of inverse dynamics for the mobile robot is given. Simulation results verify the value of the proposed strategy.
