Next Generation Weather Radar (NEXRAD) Radar Line-of-Sight

The Next Generation Weather Radar (NEXRAD) system is a network of doppler radar operated jointly by the National Weather Service (NWS), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and the U.S. Air Force. This dataset represents a line-of-sight for each radar station. Radar line-of-sight can become saturated with wind energy due to interference. Wind Turbine Water Setbacks: Ordinances (2022) and Extrapolated Trends, 115 Hub Height 170 Rotor Diameter

This dataset represents wind energy setback requirements from water based on existing county ordinances as of April 2022. A setback requirement is a minimum distance from water that an energy project may be developed, and these varied widely across the counties in which they existed. Two versions are provided: one reflecting only the county ordinances and another incorporating extrapolated trends. In the extrapolated version, a median setback equivalent to 1.1 times the turbine tip-height was applied in counties that lacked specific water setback regulations. A TIF data file and a PNG map of the data are provided for both versions, showing areas where wind energy is prohibited or permitted across the contiguous United States. The turbine parameters used were a hub-height of 115 meters and a rotor diameter of 170 meters, as obtained from the Annual Technology Baseline (ATB) 2022. For further details and citation, please refer to the publication linked below: Lopez, Anthony, Pavlo Pinchuk, Michael Gleason, Wesley Cole, Trieu Mai, Travis Williams, Owen Roberts, Marie Rivers, Mike Bannister, Sophie-Min Thomson, Gabe Zuckerman, and Brian Sergi. 2024. MAPGEN Planner: Mixed-Initiative Activity Planning for the Mars Exploration Rover Mission

This document describes the Mixed-initiative Activity Plan Generation system MAPGEN. The system is be- ing developed as one of the tools to be used during surface operations of NASA's Mars Exploration Rover mission (MER). However, the core technology is general and can be adapted to different missions and applications. The motivation for the system is to better support users that need to rapidly build activity plans that have to satisfy complex rules and fit within resource limits. The system therefore combines an existing tool for activity plan editing and resource modeling, with an advanced constraint-based reasoning and planning framework. The demonstration will show the key capabilities of the automated reasoning and planning component of the system, with emphasis on how these capabilities will be used during surface operations of the MER mission.

MAPGEN: Mixed-Initiative Activity Planning for the Mars Exploration Rover Mission

This document describes the Mixed initiative Activity Plan Generation system MAPGEN. This system is one of the critical tools in the Mars Exploration Rover mission surface operations, where it is used to build activity plans for each of the rovers, each Martian day. The MAPGEN system combines an existing tool for activity plan editing and resource modeling, with an advanced constraint-based reasoning and planning framework. The constraint-based planning component provides active constraint and rule enforcement, automated planning capabilities, and a variety of tools and functions that are useful for building activity plans in an interactive fashion. In this demonstration, we will show the capabilities of the system and demonstrate how the system has been used in actual Mars rover operations. In contrast to the demonstration given at ICAPS 03, significant improvement have been made to the system. These include various additional capabilities that are based on automated reasoning and planning techniques, as well as a new Constraint Editor support tool. The Constraint Editor (CE) as part of the process for generating these command loads, the MAPGEN tool provides engineers and scientists an intelligent activity planning tool that allows them to more effectively generate complex plans that maximize the science return each day. The key to the effectiveness of the MAPGEN tool is an underlying constraint-based planning and reasoning engine.

Wind Turbine Oil and Gas Pipeline Setbacks: Ordinances (2022) and Extrapolated Trends, 115 Hub Height 170 Rotor Diameter

This dataset represents wind energy setback requirements from oil and gas pipelines. A setback requirement is a minimum distance from a pipeline that an energy project may be developed. As of April 2022, no ordinances were discovered for any counties. Such ordinances are likely to arise as regulations continue to expand. Therefore, this dataset applies a median setback equivalent to 1.1 times the turbine tip-height, sourced from trends in other infrastructure. A TIF data file and a PNG map of the data are provided, showing areas where wind energy is prohibited or permitted across the contiguous United States. The turbine parameters used were a hub-height of 115 meters and a rotor diameter of 170 meters, as obtained from the Annual Technology Baseline (ATB) 2022. Virus-induced gene editing of stomatal regulators in Nicotiana benthamiana enables rapid functional genomics

Virus-induced gene editing (VIGE) holds promise as a rapid and scalable approach for functional genomics in plants. Here, we apply a tobacco rattle virus (TRV)-based single-guide RNA (sgRNA) delivery system to target key regulators of stomatal development in Nicotiana benthamiana using transgenic Cas9-expressing lines. sgRNAs fused to a mobile RNA element and co-delivered with TRV enabled both somatic and heritable genome editing across orthologs of STOMAGEN, EPF2, YODA, and SPEECHLESS. Somatic editing frequencies reached up to 95%, and heritable tetra-allelic mutations were recovered in multiple target genes. Mutants exhibited significant, gene-specific changes in stomatal density, with corresponding effects on leaf temperature indicative of altered evaporative cooling. Additionally, sgRNAs fused to an AmCyan reporter enabled visualization of virus-infected tissues, allowing stomatal phenotyping in edited M0 sectors. This TRV-based platform facilitates functional assessment of genes influencing stomatal patterning and offers a powerful tool for dissecting gene function in a developmentally and physiologically relevant context.

Airport and Heliport Setbacks

This dataset represents a first-order quantification of airport and heliport setback requirements based on the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) 14 CFR Part 77.9. It defines the following FAA notice criteria that we use to create runway buffers. Runways longer than 3,200 feet receive a 20,000 foot buffer, runways less than 3,200 feet long receive a buffer of 10,000 feet, and heliports receive a buffer of 5,000 feet. A setback requirement is a minimum distance from an airport or heliport that an energy project may be developed. United States Land-based Wind Supply Curves 2023

This data packet contains supply curves, hourly generation profiles, and a composite siting exclusion TIFF for land-based wind across the contiguous United States. The supply curves offer comprehensive metrics such as capacity (MW), generation (MWh), levelized cost of energy (LCOE), levelized cost of transmission (LCOT), and more for each reV site (~60,000 sites). Hourly generation profiles are available for each reV site and can be matched to the available capacity in the supply curve (refer to the Jupyter Notebook). The composite exclusion TIFF is a single file that delineates areas where wind installations are permissible based on various siting assumptions. This data packet contains information for the Reference and Limited siting scenarios. The turbine parameters used were a hub-height of 115 meters and a rotor diameter of 170 meters, as obtained from the Annual Technology Baseline (ATB) 2022. ESCHER: An interactive mesh-generating editor for preparing finite-element input

ESCHER is an interactive mesh generation and editing program designed to help the user create a finite-element mesh, create additional input for finite-element analysis, including initial conditions, boundary conditions, and slidelines, and generate a NEUTRAL FILE that can be postprocessed for input into several finite-element codes, including ADINA, ADINAT, DYNA, NIKE, TSAAS, and ABUQUS. Two important ESCHER capabilities, interactive geometry creation and mesh archival storge are described in detail. Also described is the interactive command language and the use of interactive graphics. The archival storage and restart file is a modular, entity-based mesh data file. Modules of this file correspond to separate editing modes in the mesh editor, with data definition syntax preserved between the interactive commands and the archival storage file. Because ESCHER was expected to be highly interactive, extensive user documentation was provided in the form of an interactive HELP package.
