Artificial Neural Network-based State Estimation for Low Observable, Unbalanced Microgrids for Microgrid Building Blocks

The microgrid building blocks (MBB) were proposed as microgrid components with combined sub-components with power conversion, communication, and microgrid control capability, or a subset of such sub-components. This work addresses the microgrid controller, present in an MBB, which requires accurate state estimation to perform its tasks, including for monitoring, power flow (dispatch), fault detection, etc. In this paper, an artificial neural network (ANN)-based framework for state estimation is proposed for an MBB, especially for unbalanced and low observable microgrids. To overcome the challenge of low observability in unbalanced systems, a concept of extended adjacent matrix is introduced to reduce the required number of measurements for state estimation. Addressing the challenges, a feed forward neural network (FNN) is utilized to enhance estimation accuracy and reliability with the reduced number of measurements. The proposed state estimation is validated through extensive simulations on a microgrid, which was achieved from the modified IEEE 34-bus distribution test feeder with multiple distributed energy resources (DERs) and demonstrated superior performance in estimation accuracy and low observability.

Assessing the Feasibility of Bordered Block Diagonal Reordering in Power System Matrices using Fully Convolutional Network

In electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations for power systems and inverter-based resources (IBRs), the arrangement of states within the system's linear equations, represented by matrix A in Ax=b, is critical. The state ordering in matrix A can highlight distinct characteristics of the system's graph, and identifying an optimal state ordering is crucial for efficient computation. The choice of state ordering, however, is dependent on the solver used, as each solver may perform optimally with different matrix patterns. With a wide array of matrix reordering algorithms available, selecting the most suitable one becomes challenging without insights into the matrix's ideal configuration. To address this, the paper proposes a fully convolutional network (FCN) to evaluate the reordering potential of the A matrix into a bordered block diagonal (BBD) pattern, which is commonly observed in power system and IBR modeling. The FCN's assessment aims to streamline the solver's operation, which in turn could substantially reduce the computational time required to find a solution.

Directed self-assembly of block copolymers for high-precision patterning in the era of extreme ultraviolet lithography

Extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography enables unprecedented resolution in semiconductor patterning but faces critical challenges in developing resist materials that achieve high-precision at economically viable throughput. Directed self-assembly (DSA) of block copolymers (BCPs) offers a promising solution for pattern rectification by leveraging thermodynamically determined domain structures to decouple BCP pattern quality from the imperfect original lithographic pattern. This prospective presents an overview of recent progress on the EUV + DSA strategy, covering advances in BCP material design, processing, metrology, and pattern transfer. We highlight recent advances in high-χ BCPs with perpendicular orientation and domain spacings compatible with EUV dimensions, leveraging A-b-(B-r-C) architectures. We also discuss progress in chemical pre-pattern fabrication using both positive- and negative tone resists, along with processing strategies to minimize defects and roughness based on BCP thermodynamics and assembly kinetics. We further examine metrology platforms for characterizing the thermodynamics of BCP materials and quantifying the size and shape of BCP domains. Lastly, we review pattern transfer strategies for generating functional inorganic masks suitable for semiconductor manufacturing. Together, these advances highlight the potential of DSA to complement EUV lithography, offering a pathway to address critical challenges in achieving high-precision patterning for the semiconductor industry.

Carbon Block Density

Within the framework of the Neutron Target Demonstrator about 1 m 3 of reactor grade graphite is available at LANSCE. In order to evaluate its suitability as a moderator, knowledge about the exact density is important, since it strongly affects the average time neutrons spend in the volume. The graphite is available in different shapes. A brief analysis was done on three different carbon blocks to determine the density of the material as well as the uncertainty in that measurement.

Shaping Symmetry and Molding Morphology of Triply-Periodic Network Assemblies via Molecular Design and Processing of Block Copolymers

This project aimed to uncover molecular design rules for block copolymer (BCP) assemblies of triply-periodic network (TPN) phases, which are highly sought after, yet elusive, nanostructures for many functional material applications that rely on their combination of symmetry and polycontinuous domain connectivity [R1, R2], such as topological-photonics, supercapacitors and ultrafiltration media. While they have been a target of “bottom up” approaches to nanostructured, hybrid materials, the ability to manipulate the tubular network morphology of TPN assemblies beyond the cubic double-gyroid (DG) phase has advanced relatively little.

Ligated Cluster Building Blocks as Chemical Donors and Acceptors for Two-Dimensional Metal Chalcogenides and Phosphorene Nanoribbons

Final report for studies on ligated transition metal chalcogenide clusters building blocks for serving as dopants in two dimensional semiconductors. The primary result is extending the superatom concept to transition metal chalcogenide clusters including a similarity with the perioidic electronic structures that are found in the periodic table. These results have found both new magic numbers, and new magic clusters with large spin magnetic moments.

NOAA PSL Microwave Radiometer Block Island / Thermodynamic retrievals TROPoe

This dataset contains daily files with thermodynamic profiles retrieved with the optimal estimation physical retrieval TROPoe (Turner and Löhnert 2014; Turner and Blumberg 2019; Turner and Löhnert 2021). The profiles are retrieved every 10 minutes from instantaneous brightness temperature measurements at 35 channels observed with a microwave radiometer MP3000A operated by NOAA Physical Sciences Laboratory on the Block Island for WFIP3. Additional input data in TROPoe are cloud base height from a collocated ceilometer operated by NOAA GML and temperature, water vapor mixing ratio, and pressure from a sensor attached to the MWR housing. In addition to these temporally resolved input data, TROPoe requires an a priori dataset (prior) that provides mean climatological estimates of thermodynamic profiles and specifies how temperature and humidity covary with height as an input (for details see, e.g., Djalalova et al. 2022). The prior is a key component of the retrieval and provides a constraint on the ill-posed inversion problem. A monthly prior was computed from operational radiosonde launches at Upton, NY.
